MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations and Thank You
To Cevdet Fat from Grade 1/2B who came to show me his Maths this week. He has
been learning how to do division and could answer questions such as 24 ÷ 6 and 72 ÷9
correctly. He worked these out in his head very quickly. Well done Cevdet this is wonderful.
Keep working hard.
The Secondary Turkish Language students have r ecently been sitting tests and the
following students have done very well:
Year 7 – Haris Harbas (80%), Ozge Yilmaz (77%) and Burak Sari (70%).
Year 8 – Yusuf Ali Sevgi (98), Mert Avci (90%) and Burak Sevil (82%).
Year 9 – Pinar Ergun (99%), Selnour Toul (93%), Aleyna Elevli (90%), Dugyu Atalay (88%), Can Ince (87%), Ozge Namal (85%) and Yusuf Yilmaz (76%).
These are very pleasing results and I hope many of them go on to take Turkish at VCE
level.
Primary School Concert
Wow, what a great night! Thank you to everyone who helped to make the Primary
School concert a success. It takes an enormous amount of work to have every child involved in a performance such as this and they all looked wonderful. First I would like to
thank Gavin Byrt, our Grade 3/4 teacher who wrote the show along with his friend Lloyd
Poole. Mr Gavin was supported by his team of Ms Watts and Ms Bretag who looked
after the technical and logistical side of the concert. All other teachers played a major
role in organising performances and teaching their student their parts as well as supervising them on the night. Many of the Secondary staff also came along and assisted with
supervision and other roles.
Many parents and staff members worked hard on preparing the costumes which looked amazing and a
huge thank you to Enver Yenilmez who made the boat! It looked stunning and worked perfectly. If you
wish to buy a DVD of the concert you must contact the office by this Friday 14 th November. No more
orders can be taken after this date. Once again thank you to everyone who helped
VCE Examinations
The VCE examinations are drawing to a close for our students. There is one exam to go which is Religion and Society on Monday 17th November. Well done to all students who have sat VCE exams this
year. We will now have to wait for the results which come out on Monday 15th December. The Year 12
students are now looking forward to their Graduation which is on Friday 5th December.
Turkish Republic Day Concert
This Thursday we celebrated Turkish Republic Day. We could not celebrate on the 29th October as it
was the day before the Primary School concert. The Turkish Language teachers have been working
very hard preparing the students for their performances. Thank you to Ms Fatma Kullu and Mr Hasan
Vatandas for their hard work and dedication. We will have some pictures in next week’s newsletter.
2015 Prep Information Session
On Wednesday this week we held an Information session for the parents of our new Prep students for
next year. It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance. It was also very pleasing to see so
many of the new students attend and settle into some fun classroom activities with Ms Ilkay and Ms
Sumayya. The young children were very settled and played nicely. Thank you to Ms Ilkay and Ms
Sumayya for running this session. Thank you also to Ms Laura Andreadis and Ms Coryn Bretag for talking to the parents about the school’s expectations for next year.

CONTRIBUTED BY AYSE ERENLI
Dear Parents,
This week we were in the kitchen
with the girls making cupcakes. They
prepared them all by themselves with
minimal assistance. They turned out
so delicious.
End of year is fast approaching. We
would like to thank all students who
attended the Girls Club this year. It
was a wonderful experience for both
teachers and students.
We enjoyed a different range of activities with the girls, which focused
on engaging and teaching them new
life skills that are needed for everyday life. We would like to thank all
parents for allowing their girls to be a
part of this program, we could not
have done it without your support.
We will inform you of the start date
for next year.
Thank you.
Girls Club Team.

Year 9-11 Examinations
Students from Year 9-11 have their Semester Two Examination Period running from Monday 17 th November until
Wednesday 19th November.
These examinations are very important for a number of reasons. It is essential that students are punctual for their
examinations, bring the correct equipment and are appropriately dressed. In some cases the performance of
these exams may determine VCE subject selection, scholarship selection or progression to the next year level.
Students are recommended to complete adequate revision (hopefully they have been all semester already) and
should be approaching their teachers if they have any areas that they feel they can improve in. A copy of the examination timetable and student exam specifications is attached to the newsletter.
Year 10 and any Year 11 students who do not complete VCE Unit 2 Mathematical Methods will conclude school
at 2pm on Wednesday November 19th.
Good luck to all students with their examination performance and make sure you continue to revise and study
over the next few days to maximise your examination performance.
VCE Orientation Week
There is a full week of VCE Orientation classes commencing at the conclusion of the examination and report
writing period. This week will run from Monday the 24th of November until Friday the 28th of November. Our current Year 10 students will be moving up to Year 11 and our current Year 11 students will become our new Year
12’s.
It is integral that all students attend and are punctual. They should also bring materials for completion of work,
particularly paper and pens. For their new VCE subjects it would be great if they have the text book and are able
to bring this along. If students are ill and unable to attend it is very important that they contact the school to keep
us informed and they will require a medical certificate if they are absent for 2 days in row. Students who are not
in attendance (without medical or
emergency reasons) may be removed from their VCE classes due to a lack of commitment.
VCE teachers will be commencing their coursework, outlining plans and setting holiday homework for these classes. Students’ attendance will count towards 2015 attendance and these will be the first official classes for their
new subjects. It will give our students a large advantage moving into 2015.
A timetable for this orientation period will be available to students early next week.
2014 Semester Examination Process and Procedures
STUDENT INFORMATION YEARS 9-11
Mt Hira College has been running semester examinations since 2004. There have been some changes to this process such as removing a range of subjects (initially we examined every subject), changing the year levels from 7-12
to 9-11 and increasing the professionalism and structure of the examination process. There are a number of reasons why we conduct these examinations;





They form a significant component of the students overall assessment
It provides essential feedback about the students’ performance
It assists with teacher planning and preparation by giving something to work towards
It helps to prepare students for the examination periods that they will be faced with in Years 11 and 12
Develops a range of examination skills that are essential for successful Year 12 performance
Improves student time management
Year 9 & 10 Examinations will occur for the following subjects; Mathematics, English, Humanities & Science
ALL VCE UNIT 2 SUBJECTS WILL BE EXAMINED
Student Preparation
Students should be regularly revising over work from throughout the semester in preparation for this examination.
Students should be guided by their teachers about key areas of focus for the examination, however if students are
unsure of what will be assessed on their examinations then it is important that they approach their teachers and
request assistance. Reviewing topic tests completed over the semester is also a useful method of revision and
preparation for the examination.
Ensure you bring the appropriate materials to the examination with you. If you are unsure of what these materials
are then please approach your teacher.
All examinations will take place in the gym. Heating is currently being installed so it is an excellent location for the
exam period. All students are required to wear full school uniform into the examination area.
If you are absent on the day of an examination you are required to follow these steps;
1.
2.
3.
Ensure a family member contacts the college as early as possible to inform the office staff of your absence.
Bring a note (from a parent/guardian) or medical certificate the following day you are at school outlining/
explaining the reason for your absence.
A time for you to complete the missed examination(s) will then be scheduled.
Examination Specifications






All examinations are designed to take the students 90 minutes (this does not include the 10 minutes reading
time that each examination has).
The semester examination will cover content from the whole semester.
There will be a range of knowledge (through a range of questions!) and skills that students are required to
demonstrate on the examination. For Unit 2 examinations teachers are strongly encouraged to use the
VCAA examination structure.
Use all of the time available to you appropriately! It is important that all students develop positive examination habits. This means answering all questions in detail, using the space allocated to you neatly and when
time permits planning out how you intend to respond to a question.
Reading time is important. You should use this time to consider both the answers to questions and the approach you will take in answering them.
BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR EXAMINATIONS
