Box 306 • Colfax, WA 99111 November 2014, “The Growers’ Guide” Page B3 We Are NoW DeAlers For Ag leADer $1.5 Million Grant To Advance ‘Big Data’ For Genomic Research By Sylvia Kantor, Washington State University CAHNRS Scientists at Washington State University have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to help meet the growing needs of the data driven genomic science community. The Tripal Gateway project will build on existing cyberinfrastructure to enhance the capacity of genomic databases to manage, exchange and process “big data.” “Now, in a single day some modern DNA sequencers can output as much data as the human genome,” Stephen Ficklin said. “We expect the deluge of data to continue to grow exponentially.” Ficklin, the lead investigator and a research scientist in the department of horticulture at WSU, said that just as computers have had dramatic improvements that have lowered costs and allowed for mass production, DNA sequencing technologies are undergoing a similar transition. The challenge is no longer affordability of DNA sequencing, he said. The WSU project is one of 17 grants, totaling $31 million awarded by the National Science Foundation Data Infrastructure Building Blocks (DIBBS) program. Sharing information Genomic research relies on community databases—websites that house genomic, genetic and breeding data—for use by scientists working in the same research area, for example cotton, cacao (chocolate), or plants in the rosaceae family like apple, cherry, and pear. By creating ways to easily share data between community databases, on demand, researchers will no longer have to navigate between multiple websites to obtain the information they need. “Genomics scientists who can access large data sets but have limited resources for storing, sharing and analyzing them will benefit from this work,” Ficklin said. The three-year project will also utilize software-defined networking technology to quickly transfer large data sets between computational resources and the database to support data sharing and analysis. Ultimately, it will link existing community databases for fruit and hardwood trees as well as legumes into a larger network of online research databases. Tripal software The project is based on open-source software known as Tripal (http://tripal.info), originally developed by Ficklin and Meg Staton at Clemson University and significantly enhanced by Dorrie Main at Washington State University and Kirsten Bett at the University of Saskatchewan. Tripal is used by at least 24 different plant and animal databases, including the Genome Database for Rosaceae (GDR http:// www.rosaceae.org/) and community databases for 24 crops developed by the Main lab. Main is a co-investigator of the new project. The project team also includes Sook Jung, Washington State University; Alex Feltus and Kuang-Ching Wang, Clemson University; Meg Staton, University of Tennessee; and Jill Wegrzyn, University of Connecticut. Rustebakke, DVM If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco, the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the U.S.; this is the way we have kept it out of this country. African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the U.S. horse industry if it were to come here. The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal. I can’t legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I can’t legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia. I’m not complaining; the United States of America, the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population. If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States. I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly. Given these conditions, it is no wonder that reports of Concord blackleaf have been rolling in faster than a lower valley dust storm. In some cases, blackleaf has not been limited to juice grapes, there have also been reports of it on some wine grapes in certain locations. In order to understand how to potentially manage or prevent blackleaf, we have to understand what it is and what it is not. It is not a nutritional deficiency. All of those old recommendations for applying potassium fertilizer to alleviate symptoms? Throw them out. It is not a result of mite feeding. Mites will cause a more browning and bronzing of leaves; and they can be controlled with a miticide. Spraying a miticide will not alleviate blackleaf. It is not a disease; not powdery mildew, not Grapevine leafroll. Blackleaf is a physiological disorder that results in the degradation of chloroplasts (cellular structures that conduct photosynthesis) and death of epidermal cells (the outer “skin” of a grape leaf). This degradation and death is caused by exposure to excessive UVB sunlight. Specifically, in blackleaf, the damage is a result of exposure to UVB when the leaves are not fully mature and therefore lack the waxy cuticle and build-up of sunscreen compounds that would naturally protect the tissue from damage. In Washington, most of the damage that is seen in Concord vineyards as “black leaves” in September, was actually from damage that was initiated in late June and early July. This is why blackleaf tends to be a bigger problem during years with reduced cloud coverage during those months. The damage takes time to fully manifest itself and display the “black leaf” symptoms. It is akin to the delayed muscle pain felt when starting a new sport or exercise regime. Why do some blocks of Concord grapevines display severe symptoms of blackleaf when adjacent blocks have very little? Drought stress has been implicated in exacerbating blackleaf in Concord. Drought stress reduces vine transpiration, which in turn, can result in superheating of leaf tissue exposed to the sun. This high heat exposure can further damage chloroplasts and cells, accelerating the damage to the leaf tissue. As such, vineyards that experienced water stress do risk having more severe blackleaf symptoms. Water stress only enhances symptom development in vineyards that have already suffered from blackleaf damage, it does not cause it. There are no current commercially acceptable techniques for preventing blackleaf in Concord vineyards. However, in years with few cloudy days and warm temperatures, the severity of blackleaf may be reduced with appropriate management of vine water stress. For more information on blackleaf and potential ways to reduce symptoms, please see WSU Extension Publication EB0745, Blackleaf in Grapes (Olmstead et al. 2005). A Conundrum The definition of the word Conundrum is: something that is puzzling or confusing. Here are six Conundrums of socialism in the United States of America: 1. America is capitalist and greedy—yet half of the population is subsidized. 2. Half of the population is subsidized— yet they think they are victims. 3. They think they are victims—yet their representatives run the government. 4. Their representatives run the government—yet the poor keep getting poorer. 5. The poor keep getting poorer—yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about. 6. They have things that people in other countries only dream about—yet they want America to be more like those other countries. Global Buyers Applaud Innovation, Technology In Ag Production From Melissa Kessler, U.S. Grains Council Biotechnology benefits farmers and consumers worldwide, and innovation in plant science is essential to meet the world’s rapidly growing demand for food, said Dr. Howard Minigh, president and chief executive officer of CropLife International, when he presented to the nearly 500 attendees of Export Exchange 2014 on October 22, 2014. Minigh addressed the crowd of international buyers and domestic traders gathered in Seattle, Washington, for the biennial conference meant to help the two constituencies build relationships to facilitate grain trade in the coming years. The event is co-sponsored by the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) and Renewable Fuels Association (RFA). Since being commercially introduced in the mid-1990s, the economic benefits of plant biotechnology at the farm level have exceeded $117 billion, according to PG Economics. In 2013, 18 million farmers in 27 countries—more than 90 percent of them lower-income farmers in the developing world—planted biotech crops. Despite the widespread adoption of this technology, it is controversial and, in some markets, unpredictable regulatory frameworks often influenced by political forces have created challenges to global trade. The timelines for approval in large importing countries are increasing, although this trend is not confined only to those who buy grain. Even the United States, which as recently as 2008 was a global leader in biotech approvals, now trails Canada, Brazil and Argentina on this measure. “The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that the world needs to increase food production 70 percent by 2050, which means we must grow more with less,” said Ron Gray, USGC chairman. “To meet this demand, we need better technology of all types, and we also must continue to embrace trade as a path to food security. These are critical topics to discuss at meetings like Export Exchange.” Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, stated, “Too often people forget that the ethanol industry produces more than just fuel, it also produces distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a high protein feedstock. Last year alone, the industry created enough DDGS to produce seven hamburgers for every single person on the planet. It’s clear that the American ethanol industry is helping both fuel and feed the world.” With more than 200 foreign attendees representing more than 40 countries and an additional 200 U.S. attendees representing every sector of the coarse grains value chain, Export Exchange is a premiere global grain trade conference. Those participating on Tuesday and Wednesday also heard presentations on the global supply and demand situation, economic drivers affecting the global feed grains trade, and the latest developments in shipping, financing and the policy environment. Driven by The demand for meat varies considerably income growth, urbanization and a transition by age, with seniors demanding much less to a market economy, the Chinese diet has meat than younger populations. China’s shifted from staples to meat. Since the 1980s, one-child policy has skewed its population Chinese grain consumption has decreased demographics such that it has a rapidly aging by 50 percent while meat consumption has population. As the middle-aged population increased by nearly 75 percent in urban areas moves closer to retirement, the younger and by more than 130 percent in rural areas. population will shrink, resulting in relatively This increased meat demand has resulted more seniors in the future. in significant increases in meat production Chinese seniors tend to eat a more healthin China. China continues to lead the world ful diet, which includes more vegetables and in pork production but also has increased less meat. In addition, because many parents the production of other meats and aquatic and grandparents live with their children, they products. Much of this increased production tend to influence the family’s eating habits, has been based upon increased production resulting in less meat consumed at home. Thus, the aging population may have a significant effect on the demand for meat and, hence, the demand for livestock feed, including grain and soybeans in the future. Recent studies suggest that total average per capita meat consumption in China could grow from about 60 kilograms in 2010 to nearly 100 kg per person per year by 2030. Accounting for the aging population would reduce the projection by up to 5 percent per year. How will this dramatic increase in meat consumption be met? Chinese meat production likely will expand to meet this demand but will put increasing pressure on feedstuffs and protein supplies. China’s meat imports, particularly highquality imports destined for the hotel/restaurant trade will likely increase to meet a growing income driven demand. However, given China’s limited arable land base and irrigation water supplies, it is likely that unless productivity increases dramatically, imports of soybeans and feedstuffs will increase significantly to feed a growing livestock inventory. While the level of China’s imports is debatable, there is likely an opportunity for increased exports of U.S soybeans and feedstuffs. North Dakota is wellsituated to at least partially meet some of this demand with its expanded corn and soybean production base via northwestern ports. However, shipping congestion may limit opportunities, at least in the short run, making gulf exports more viable. Nevertheless, China’s growing demand for meat will create opportunities in the world marketplace. However, China’s population demographic changes in the next several decades likely will reduce the overall demand for meat. November 2014, “The Growers’ Guide” Page B9 Pear Crop Insurance Modifications Jo Lynne Seufer, USDA-RMA, Spokane, WA USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) on October 15, 2014 announced program enhancements to the Pear MultiPeril Crop Insurance (MPCI) plan for the 2015 crop year. Changes to the Pear Crop Provisions include: • Optional units may be established by type; • Revision to the actuarial structure for pear types; • Different coverage levels and percent of price elections that may be elected for each type in the county; • Revision to allow insects and disease to be insurable causes of loss unless damage is due to insufficient or improper application of control measures; and • Revision to the Fresh Pear Quality Adjustment Endorsement to include all insurable causes of loss. Fruit producers in the Pacific Northwest are reminded of the upcoming sales closing date on November 20, for apple, blueberry, sweet and tart cherry actual revenue history, cranberry, grape, pear, table grape, and stone fruit crops (apricots, nectarines, freestone peaches, and plums/prunes). Current policyholders and uninsured growers must make all of their decisions on crop insurance coverage before the sales closing date. If there is no coverage in a county for a specific crop under the traditional MPCI program, producers may be eligible for coverage under a written agreement. Producers should contact their crop insurance agent for more information. Producers are encouraged to visit their crop insurance agent to learn specific details for the 2015 crop year. Federal crop insurance policies are sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance companies and agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA service centers or on the RMA website at: www3.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents. McGREGOR ACE SNYDER Tanks November 2014, “The Growers’ Guide” Page B11 YOUNKER AERVOE Conventional Tillage Harvests A Haboob, Unhealthy Soils By Jim Armstrong, Spokane, WA County Conservation Dist. Haboob: a funny word, but its meaning is far from laughable. Defined as a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric current, haboobs can have catastrophic effects on both land and life. Dry August winds often stir up dust clouds in central and eastern Washington, but 2014 was exceptional. On Aug. 12, an enormous, miles-wide haboob, which was reminiscent of those from the Dust Bowl era, descended upon eastern Washington. Two weeks later, another dust cloud caused a 50-car pile-up in the southern part of the state, sending multiple people to the hospital and shutting down Interstate 82. The main source of the dust was unprotected farm fields, either after harvest or lands that have been left vacant for the year. In other words, there were no plants covering the soil between crops being planted. When farmers using conventional tillage techniques are working the ground, the tractors and drills kick up dust. Substitute 40- to 50-mph winds in place of the tractor and drill, and soil erosion increases exponentially. Combine several hundred thousand acres of farm land and 50 mph winds and you have a haboob. Conventional farming practices include using implements such as discs, plows, chisels, harrows, sprayers and drills to prepare the soil for planting a single crop. All can be pulled behind a tractor around the same field, one at a time to prepare the soil for planting. Four to eight passes depending on the crop are made over the same field to establish that crop. The end result of repetitive disturbance is topsoil that has been worked into a fine powder, which is easily and rapidly lifted into the air with even the slightest of winds, creating soil erosion events of the type Washington experienced in August. One of the techniques used in the drier areas west and south of Spokane, Washington, is called deep furrow planting. This method places the seed down where the moisture level should be by the end of summer. In many cases, that equates to six to eight inches below the surface. Much of this type of planting occurs on fields where they grow a winter crop one year, and then let the field stay dormant, often called fallow, the following year. The fallow fields are continually worked during the summer to prevent vegetative growth, in theory, to protect moisture from being removed. But studies have clearly shown that bare soil can have temperatures 40 degrees or higher than soils covered with vegetation or even stubble for shade. Increased soil temperatures and evaporation can quickly dry the soil. There is an alternative though, and it’s more sustainable. No-till farming is the practice of placing the next crop’s seed and fertilizer into the ground through the previous crop’s stubble or residue. This does a couple of very important things. First, it leaves the soil undisturbed as the drill moves through. Second, notill farming protects and retains topsoil moisture, making it available to plants. Research shows that for every tillage operation where the soil is disturbed, up to a half inch of moisture is lost. Add up the three or four tillage operations in a conventional system and the moisture loss is significant. Fortunately, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service works with farmers and private landowners to help improve soil health practices and prevent these types of disasters, including helping farmers adopt no-till on their land. The haboob was a clear reminder that more soil conservation work is needed. But the good news, more farmers are embracing new technologies as well as proven conservation practices available to them, which will help mitigate disasters like the recent haboobs in Washington. Box 165, Walla Walla 99362 (509) 529-1761 Advice On Using Sprouted Grains As Livestock Feed Montana State University Extension News Service Because of this summer’s weather Montana has been hot, cold, rainy and, in some parts, snowy, the grain harvest was delayed in many areas, and some barley and wheat have sprouted in the seed heads. These sprouted grains, although not suitable for traditional markets, can be used as a feedstuff for livestock. Based on research, sprouted grains have similar feed value to non-sprouted grains. Daily gains and feed efficiency in the feedlot are similar between cattle consuming non-sprouted or sprouted grains. However, due to the high starch content of wheat and barley, feeding below 20 percent of the total ration on a dry matter basis is recommended to minimize incidences of acidosis. For the greatest benefit of feeding wheat and barley, either sprouted or not, the kernels should be rolled or cracked and should never be self-fed or used for creep feeding. Fine grinding of wheat and barley should be avoided. Major areas of concern when feeding sprouted grains are proper storage and the potential development of mold and mycotoxins. Proper storage of the sprouted grains is crucial to maintaining quality and limiting mold growth. If moisture levels are less than 13 percent, it can be stored as you would ordinarily store grain. When determining moisture levels of a field, make sure multiple samples are collected. Moisture content may vary across the field depending on topography and wind, which would cause uneven drying the sprouted grain. If moisture levels are greater than 13 percent, ensiling may be a better option for storage. Sprouted grains can be ensiled in silos, bunkers, or storage bags. Whole grain does not pack well, so rolling or cracking of the grain should be done prior to ensiling. Sprouted grains, such as barley and wheat, can be layered with corn silage during silage packing to ensile the sprouted grain. The combination of high moisture and cool weather conditions means mold may develop in sprouted grains. If mold is seen on the sprouted grains, it is recommended to collect multiple samples from around the field. Proper drying of the sprouted grains is more likely to occur on the outer edges, while the center of a field will be more susceptible to mold and mycotoxin production due to higher moisture contect. Mold and mycotoxin levels should be assessed prior to feeding or harvesting because they can be hazardous to both humans and livestock. Barry Jacobsen, MSU Extension plant pathology specialist, suggests that when submitting samples to labs, mold species and genus should be identified if possible. If mycotoxins are present in the sprouted grains at moderate levels, the sprouted grains should be combined with clean, non-moldy feed to reduce mycotoxin levels. For additional information about feeding sprouted grains, please contact your local county Extension Office. '13 CASE IH PUMA 145, . . . By Daniel Robison, Oregon State University If you like to prolong color in your landscapes through the summer and into the fall, consider planting evergreen shrubs called Hebes (pronounced HEE-bees) for vivid color in both flowers and foliage during summer and fall. “Most Hebes flower in the summer, but others bloom in late fall,” said Neil Bell, consumer horticulturalist with the Oregon State University Extension Service. “Some have colorful foliage that lasts through autumn. They provide an interesting change from the usual asters and maples we customarily rely on for autumn interest.” Native to New Zealand, Hebes have hundreds of cultivars, but only a few are familiar to American gardeners. “The plants may have acquired a reputation for lack of hardiness because some of the most popular cultivars introduced here are not hardy in very cold winters,” Bell said. “However, many Hebes do well in the Pacific Northwest if grown in a sheltered spot.” Large-leaved Hebes can be injured by temperatures below 25 degrees and are less hardy than those with small leaves. Rather than avoid buying large-leaved shrubs, consider putting them in a sheltered spot or in a container you can move indoors temporarily if it gets cold. For showy purple flowers in the fall, Bell suggests cultivars “Amy” and “Alicia Amherst.” “Purple Picture” blooms in June but flowers profusely again in October and November. Some red-flowering Hebes, such as “Hobby,” provide color through November and even through December in a mild year. “Bowles Hybrid” produces lavender flowers in summer, but will bloom again in the fall, even into January. “Except for ‘Bowles’ Hybrid,’ which is hardier, all these hybrids are susceptible to cold,” Bell said. Plant them against a sheltered wall or tucked between other shrubs. Be prepared to give them a little extra cover if the temperature threatens to drop suddenly.” Several small-leaved Hebe cultivars that are hardy west of the Cascades have beautiful and unusual foliage. Some are commonly sold in the Pacific Northwest. “Quicksilver,” as the name suggests, has small silvery leaves. “Boughton Dome” has grayish foliage. “James Stirling” has ochre leaves and resembles a small conifer. Another unusual characteristic of some Hebes is a noticeable change in foliage color from summer to winter. Some cultivars take on a purplish or reddish cast during winter. Perhaps the best known is “Caledonia,” which turns purple. “Sapphire” has shoots that turn bright red at the tips in the winter. Several of the variegated cultivars are beautiful and unusual, but are large-leaved and require a protected spot if you want them to survive the winter. They include Hebe speciosa “Variegata,” “Tricolor” and “Andersonii Variegata.” In addition to a protected location, Hebes need at least partial sun, well-drained soil and water during the summer months. Most do well without much pruning, and annual moderate pruning after they bloom works well. The OSU Department of Horticulture’s website, called “Landscape Plants, Identification and Information” (http:// oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/), has photos and other information about several kinds of Hebes that grow on the OSU campus in Corvallis. Results of an OSU landscape evaluation of Hebes are available online http://horticulture.oregonstate.edu/content/ northwest-plant-evaluation-program. . . planters rippers harvesters cultivators rod-weeders fertilizer applicators harvesters planters rippers rod-weeders cultivators . chisels cultivators fertilizer applicators harvesters rod-weeders choppers chisels fertilizer applicators choppers planters rippers harvesters cultivators rod-weeders fertilizer applicators harvesters planters rippers rod-weeders cultivators Hebes Provide Fall And Winter Color . . chisels cultivators fertilizer applicators harvesters rod-weeders choppers chisels fertilizer applicators choppers 208-507-0187 HARROW Add flexibility to your farming operation with a flexible spike tooth harrow from AC Harrow Adjustable Universal Harrow Hangers 3 or 4 Bar Harrows Available Upon Request 4, 5, and 6 Foot Widths Available AC Harrow manufactures the same design as the Hillco harrow.
