THE TEVYE STORIES
By Barbara Watson
Most people who have seen the
musical or the movie of Fiddler on The
Roof recognize the protagonist’s
name,Tevye. He’s man with whom we
identify easily. He has problems, successes, strengths, and weaknesses.
He was the creation of one Sholem
Rabinovitz, who used the pen name
of Sholem Aleichem. Writers convey
their strong opinions, observations,
and the truths they discover.
While Sholem had a classic education in a Russian gymnasium or
academic high school, he wrote for
the simple people about simple people. His father favoured the educated
Hebrew language and Sholem was
trained in that. Sholem Aleichem
wrote in Yiddish, the language of the
people. This is where he found what
he knew he had to write. The first
story, Tevye Strikes it Rich, was a
monologue written in 1894. Tevye
has an encounter with a woman and
her daughter who are lost. At first he
is afraid that they are demons, but
then he gets over that, escorts them
home and is rewarded for his heroism. Peasants believed in the supernatural.
The ordinary people, once serfs,
then peasants after Tsar Alexander II’s
reforms in the middle of the 19th
century, did not benefit by the abolition of the serf system. The landlords
profited and the serfs got the leftovers. According to the History Today
site,
“The data shows that the landlords retained two-thirds of the land
while the peasants received only
one-third. So limited was the supply
of affordable quality land to the
peasants that they were reduced to
Entertainment for everyone who likes only the best
buying narrow strips that proved difficult to maintain and which yielded
little food or profit. The peasants
found themselves saddled with
redemption payments that became a
lifelong burden that then had to be
handed on to their children.”
And that’s why the Rabbi’s best
prayer for the Tsar is, “May God keep
the Tsar... far away from us”. Bill Cocks
plays the 2014 Rabbi. He’s grown a
beard just for the role and portrays
the dignity of a wise and knowledgeable man. We can’t help but believe
that this is how a rabbi must look and
act.
Medicine Hat’s first production
of Fiddler on the Roof was performed
at the Medicine Hat College theatre
in 1971. This year the show will be
performed on the Esplanade stage.
The man around whom the whole
show rotates, Tevye, will be played by
Bert Propp, and in a rare appearance,
Marty Schultz will play Tevye as Bert’s
understudy.
You’ve heard the songs before,
songs that stay with you, and you will
be fortunate to hear them again
sung by Medicine Hat’s fabulous
voices. The chorus is powerful, and
the solos will give you many years of
music that plays in your head. That’s
because the singers are so wonderful. I could use the word virtuosos
because I’m more than impressed. I
felt what they were singing, down to
my toes, during a rehearsal. The performances will be even more
enchanting.
A performance of such a classic,
with roots in the 19th century and
based on authentic life, does not simply appear on a stage. The work done
by 80-85 people must be acknowledged.Tom Rooke is the director and
began the work on this, his 6th show,
in mid 2014. His experience and
expertise give confidence to the
crew and cast. Just to be sure that he
and wife Linda are on the right track
they bring their dog along. I can’t
remember what his name is. My
notes have the words “stinky” and

HEALING WITH
NATURE
TOXIC TEAS!
Donna Rae
I was surprised that the "Marketplace" on CBC reported recently
about how toxic the teas were that we buy from our supermarket
and consume innocently thinking we are getting a good product.
It appears that the healthiest teas are the ones from the health
food stores: Numi, Rishi, Edem organic, Organic Stash, Choice
Organic, Two Leaves Organic, Organic Tazo, Organic Traditional
Medicinals, and Organic Yogi Teas, Tetley Black & Green
tea,(www.national.cleanplates.com/health-nutrition/these-teasare-toxin-free)
I was shocked to find that Celestial Seasonings contained the
highest levels pesticides that exceed the US federal limits. Other
brands mentioned that were toxic were Lipton,Tevana, Bigelow, and
many more. But, get this - "Red Rose Orange Pekoe" was found to
be the cleanest and most toxic free.
If you are interested in the health of your family regarding these
teas, Google
'toxic teas', or look up www.collectiveevolution.com/2013/10/26/what's-in-your-mug-the-toxic-truthabout-tea/

“helping paint”, but the little guy
in the kennel is definitely the
mascot.
Linda Rooke is the production manager and looks after
everything on the stage. While
Tom began his theatre involvement on the board and then
got into acting, Linda just likes
to be involved. The Sunday I
checked out the rehearsal,
Linda was in charge of the pictures taken by Joan Kennedy.
This year there is a press kit
that gave me enough information to add to the above and
give you a taste of what you will
see and hear. The remarkable
Carolyn Freeman plays the
Mama, who has a very defined
role in family life. Her daughters,
lovable but not altogether easy,
are played by Samantha and
Sydney Frelick an Janlyn Hoffman. Their voices are gorgeous.
Connor Clark plays Fyedka and
the Fiddler. Greg McLean plays
Lazar Wolf and Karoline Fox
plays Yente. I’m running out of

superlatives to describe these
singer/actors. They deserve the
highest praise.
Did I mention someone
who keeps everyone from
crashing into each other on
stage? The choreographer,
Voula Douvis, merits an accolade as well. There simply isn’t
enough room for more, but
when you see the show, you will
be entertained by superb work.

A Salute to Our Veterans
Written by Mary Lou McCrodan,
Assistant Manager
The Wellington Retirement
Residence
A few years ago, I had
the opportunity to meet a
gentleman who toured to
see if he and his wife would
like to live at The Wellington one day. Well, that one
day came and now this
gentleman and his wife are
residents of The Wellington. The Moores are “new
kids on the block” at The
Wellington. I wanted to
feature Mickey as our Veteran of Honour, 2014, but as I
was doing research to honour Mickey, I was told that
his bride, is also a Veteran.
Here are just a few of the
highlights from their distinguished journeys.
Mickey was born in
The Wellington is proud to
serve some of Canada’s
Veterans among our
residents, including
Edward “Mickey”
and Jean Moore

the Canadian Army Infantry
and
Royal
Canadian
Armoured Corps, the Royal
Canadian Air Force and the
Military Reserve during
World War II and peacetime. He enlisted in the
royal Canadian Air Force in
Calgary and took his basic
training in Toronto and was
transferred
to
the
Armoured Corps at Camp
Borden, Ontario. Mickey
enlisted in the Reserve
Army and served with the
South
Alberta
Regiment/South Alberta
Light Horse. He served for
nearly 30 years, attaining
the rank of Lieutenant
Colonel, commanding from
1972 until his discharge in
1975. He was awarded the
Canadian Volunteer Service
Medal, the 1939-1945 War
Medal, the Canadian Forces
Decoration and the Queen
Elizabeth II Diamond
Jubilee Medal.
Jean was born in Owen
Sound, Ontario. She enlisted and served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps
during World War II after
training in Kitchener,
Ontario. Jean was Manager
of the Canteen in Trinity
Barracks and was discharged with the rank of
Sergeant in Long Branch

the Canadian Volunteer
Service Medal and the

Mickey and Jean have been

I was told that Mickey
and Jean met at one of the
Canteen dances during
their service. Rumour has it
that they were swept off
their feet.
Mickey and Jean have
three lovely daughters and
their families. They are the
proud grandparents of 16,
19 great grandchildren and
one great, great granddaughter. Mickey spent the
majority of his career working for the T. Eaton Co. and
as an insurance agent with
Canada Life, followed by
some time as a security
guard at Suffield.
Jean, not only held
down the homestead,
while Mickey did a lot of
travelling, but also enjoyed
a long career with Co-op
and
later
with
Hallingsworth, which then
became Greys Apparel here
in Medicine Hat. For more
than 40 years, the Moore
family enjoyed many
happy times at their cabin
in Elkwater. This past September, Mickey and Jean
celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary here at
The Wellington.
On November 11th, at
our Remembrance Day ser-
vice, residents, family and
staff will join together in
recognition and remembrance of our resident Veterans. We will remember
those who have given huge
sacrifices, even their lives,
to ensure that we are
strong, proud and free.
Each year, our “Salute To
Our Veterans” tribute display grows with memorabilia and medals worn by
our resident Veterans.

Vaccinations
Though vaccines are
usually associated with
childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need
certain vaccinations as
R
they age. Even those who
received immunizations
as youngsters may need
refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifi-
cally to the over 50 crowd.
Seniors are urged to talk
to their doctors about certain vaccines. In addition
to flu shots, there are vaccinations that can help
prevent other illnesses,
such
as
pertussis
(whooping cough), shingles, diphtheria/tetanus,
and pneumonia. Shingles
is a condition that affects
those who had chickenpox as children, and can
be quite painful. A vaccination is an easy way to

Simple ways to extend the life of your vehicle
(MS)The longer a car can stay on
the road, the better an investment
that vehicle becomes. Fortunately,
there are several steps vehicle owners
can take that should ensure their
vehicles stay on the road for years to
come.
• Scale back on short trips. The
toll cold starts take on a vehicle can
add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the
vehicle's exhaust system. On longer
trips, that condensation will gradually
evaporate. However, on short trips,
that condensation often does not
have enough time to evaporate, and
over time too many short trips will
lead to an accumulation of water in
the muffler that can lead to rust and
rust holes on the muffler. Short trips
also can negatively affect gas
mileage. When possible, leave your
car at home on trips into town when
you can just as easily walk or ride a
bicycle. Over time, reducing the
amount of short trips you take in your
car will greatly reduce wear and tear
on your vehicle and improve your fuel
efficiency as well.
• Stick to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.
Adhering to your vehicle's maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving its durability
and protecting various components,
including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers
used to recommend changing a vehicle's oil every 3,000 miles, many of
today's newer automobiles need their
oil changed less frequently. Check
your owner's manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil
changes, and don't forget to replace
the oil filter when changing your
vehicle's oil.
• Pay attention to brake pads.
Brake pads that are allowed to wear
down can cause damage to the
brakes' rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things
harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye
on your vehicle's brake pads, which
are far less expensive to replace than
rotors and calipers, and do not allow
them to wear down to metal.
• Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will
negatively impact your vehicle's fuel
efficiency. In addition, the tires' life
expectancy is reduced considerably
when tires are not properly inflated.
Routinely check your tire pressure,
especially if you drive a lot, and keep
tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle's owner's
manual.
• Be mindful when filling up your
tank. Many people do not pay much
attention to their surroundings when
pulling into the filling station. But
when you fill up can impact your car's
life expectancy. Perhaps the worst
time to fill your tank is when the fuel
tanker is in the gas station refilling the
underground tanks. That's because
the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment
that had settled at the bottom of
those tanks. If that sediment finds its
way into your vehicle's gas tank, it can
clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle's performance. So unless your car is running
on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank
when the tanker is still in the station.
• Take care of your vehicle's interior, too. Caring for a car is not just
about being good to what's under
the hood. Caring for the car's interior
will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will
improve how you look at your vehicle
and how much you enjoy driving it.
The longer you enjoy driving your
vehicle, the longer you are likely to
keep it. Preserve the vehicle's door
and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum
the floor mats; and wipe down the
vehicle's interior, whether it's cloth or
leather. Keeping up the appearance
of the car's interior will make the
vehicle more enjoyable to drive and
increase its value at resale.

History... Operation Overlord
T
he final plans for Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of France,
and its assault phase, Operation Neptune were made in early
1944. The invasion plan called for an amphibious assault by five
infantry divisions on a fifty mile stretch of the Cotentin Caen area of the
Normandy coast. The five infantry divisions, two British, one Canadian
and two American were assigned to beaches code-named, from east to
west, Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah. Three airborne divisions
would land ahead of the main invasion to delay enemy movements and
facilitate expansion of the bridgehead. Two American airborne divisions
would land behind the western assault and the British airborne on the
eastern end. Operation Overlord represented a previously unknown level
of cooperation between allied nations, all struggling for the common goal
of defeating Nazi Germany. The plan called for the 3rd Canadian Infantry
Division to establish a beachhead, capture the three small seaside
towns, and advance ten miles inland. Their objective was to cut the
Caen-Bayeux highway, seize the Carpiquet airport west of Caen. The
Troops Boarding a LCI
challenge facing the Canadians was to overcome the coastal defences
Troops boarding a LCI (Landing Craft Infantry). An LCI could tranpsort
and capture ground positions that could be defended against German

Southhampton's port, like many in southern England, was crammed to

On June 4, Lieutenent R.R Smith briefed his Regina Rifles NCO's with
a sketch of their objectives in Courseulles-sur-mer.
Five of the men were killed in action. (DND PMR93-386)
North Shore Regiment land at Bernieres-sur-Mer
Charlie Martin, Company Sergeant-Major, 'A' Company, Queens Own Rifles, described
the landing in his book Battle Diary: "The moment the ramp came down, heavy
machine-gun fire broke out from somewhere back of the seawall. Mortars were
dropping all over the beach. The men rose, starboard line turning right, port turning left. I
said to Jack, across from me, and to everyone: "Move! Fast! Don't stop for anything. Go!
Go! Go!" We raced down the ramp, Jack and I side by side, the men closely following.

Take Two Minutes To
Be Part Of The Wave Of
T
here are 525,600 minutes in a standard year. The
Royal Canadian Legion is asking you to take two
minutes of that time to share with us as we remember our war
dead at 11 a.m. local time on 11 November. Help
us create a “Wave of Silence” from coast to coast through
your participation. It’s not much to ask in return for what we
have as Canadians. But it will mean the world to those who
survived the wars of the past century, and to those still in
our military forces today. It will show them that their service
counts and that they will not be forgotten as we speed our
way through the 21st century.

O
n May 2nd, 1915
(during the first few
days of the Second
Battle of Ypres), Lieutenant
Alexis Helmer was struck by
a German shell while
leaving the safety of his
bunker. Serving in the same
Canadian artillery unit was
Major John Macrae, a good
friend of Lieutenant Helmer.
Major John Macrae served
as a military doctor and
artillery commander, and
was called upon to officiate
over his young friends
internment as the chaplain
had been called away.
The sudden passing of his good friend, combined with
the stunning sight of red poppies waving around the
small wooden cross bearing Lieutenant Helmer’s
name, prompted Major Macrae to write the now
familiar poem, In Flanders Fields, that we associate so
closely with Remembrance Day.
It is believed that the poem helped Major Macrae
cope with the reality of what was going on around
him, and allowed him to accept the passing of his
friend. It is our hope that you will take a moment on
November 11 to remember the sacrifices of the many,
and acknowledge the memories of the survivors.
Please...
Wear a poppy for the sake of remembrance;
speak to a veteran for the sake of memory;
acknowledge the past for the sake of peace.

Infantry Advance With Sherman Tank
The Sherman tank was the workhorse of the Canadian Armoured Corps
during the Second World War. The most widely used version was the

Buildup of Vehicles and Equipment
By the end of D-Day, the Allies had landed more than 150,000 troops in
France by sea and air. Thousands of vehicles, hundreds of guns and about
4,000 tons of supplies had also been landed. More soldiers and supplies
were pouring ashore to continue the advance on D-Day-plus-one.

In Flanders Fields
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae MD (1872 - 1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
