Why Give Thanks?
Practicing gratitude is beneficial to both
the one giving and the one receiving. Research
shows that individuals who express gratitude
have a more positive outlook on life; better
health; less stress; are more likely to forgive;
less lonely; are happier; sleep better; are more
refreshed; are more resilient at recovering from
traumatic events and have stronger relationships.
Dr. Robert Emmons, author, professor
and researcher at the University of California,
Davis, is one of the world’s leading scientific
experts on gratitude. Dr. Emmons says it is an
affirmation of goodness outside of ourselves.
The benefits are available to anyone who practices gratitude. However, cultivating an attitude
of gratitude can be tough. It is a “chosen attitude.” We must be willing to recognize and acknowledge that we are the recipients of an unearned benefit. We must also give up the
“victim mentality” and overcome a sense of entitlement and deservedness.
How does one cultivate gratitude? Keep
a journal every day on what you are grateful for.
Start a gratitude jar, where you write down all
the wonderful things that happen to you on slips
of paper and pull one or two our on those bad
days. Savor life and focus on the intention in
which someone gives to you. We are all so
blessed! Happy Thanksgiving!
Golden West Turns The Big 50!
Where does the time go? In 2015,
Golden West will turn 50 years old.
Plans are underway to celebrate who
we are and all the people who have made
Golden West such a wonderful place.
There are a couple of projects in which
we are looking for your help. We would like to
make a memory quilt to put on display during
our party and open house. If you are interested
in helping put this together, we have a sign up
sheet at the front desk. We are thinking that
individuals will create a square for the quilt, but
nothing is final and suggestions will be taken.
Also, we need help with a design for a
shirt to commemorate the event. If you are interested in submitting an idea, please turn in all
designs by the end of the year to Jill. The 50th
Anniversary Committee will select a design and
use it on shirts for anyone to purchase and
wear for the celebration.
The mission of Golden West is to provide affordable quality housing and
services in an environment which is supportive of its residents and the Boulder Community.

American Outrage
Winner of 12 major awards in various

who endured terrifying roundups by federal marshals in which thousand of their horses and cattle
were confiscated for the crime of grazing them on
the open range outside their private ranch-even
though that range is recognized by the U.S. as
Western Shoshone land. Why has the U.S. spent
millions prosecuting two elderly women grazing a
few hundred animals in a desolate desert? Friday, Nov. 7th, 2:30 pm ASP

ideas. Come hear how this situation unfolds!
There will be two performances of this play.

FREEDOMS’ MEMORIAL by Del “Abe” Jones
This day is set aside to honor those
Who took the chance to die.
But they have died in vain if we ever
Forget the reason why.
Freedom can be like time
Slipping away before we even know.
But we all have the choice
More, a duty to battle freedoms’ foe.
Let us give thanks this day
To all those brave
Who paid the highest cost.
Not take it for granted
And realize it easily could be lost.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Dianne Cauble: Dianne Cauble: Originally from Houston, I lived in Santa Fe five years before moving to Boulder in 2001. After living in Colorado for the past thirteen years, I've come to love the
amazing landscapes, sunrises, and sunsets. I have never lived in a more beautiful environment.
My three younger sisters currently live in Austin, Katy, and Houston, Texas. My 32year-old son Hunter works for his father's commercial construction firm. I received a
BA in English/Creative Writing from the University of Houston and moved to Boulder
in order to earn an MFA in Writing/Poetics from Naropa. My careers include working
for art galleries in Santa Fe and Houston as well as the Museum of Fine Arts. I'm also
a writer and have published pieces in art magazines, as well as contemporary lifestyle, and academic publications.
My travels include France, Spain, Central America, and throughout Mexico. I enjoy reading, writing,
and solitude.
My cats, Calypso and Julien, are finally adjusting to the new place. For the past three years, I lived
in Old Town Longmont, where they enjoyed the luxury of a backyard deck. They're adjusting to the
daily beep, beep, beep construction, and I've learned to block noise with the a/c window unit, a fan,
an air purifier, and television. I'm also adjusting to once again living in Boulder and navigating orange cones and lane closures.
Elvira Catalano: Hi. My name is Elvira Catalano, and I was born in Brooklyn, New York. My parents
immigrated from Naples, Italy. I had three brothers--Henry, William, and Alfred. I graduated from
Richmond Hill High School and lived in New York and Toms River, New Jersey.
At age 20 I married Sam Catalano and became a housewife. I have two sons,
Carmen and Anthony. Carmen lives in Ozone Park, New York, and Anthony lives
here in Boulder.
When I lived in Toms River, I lived in a retirement community called Leisure Village
West. I grew tomato plants between my bushes. I came here from Toms River,
New Jersey to be near my son Anthony. I'm 96 years old. I love to exercise and do
yoga. I'm living here in Golden West and meeting nice friendly people.

household items, pictures, small furniture will be marked to
