Update on Digital Traffic Red Light Camera System
Installation of Digital Red Light Cameras
As part of the ‘Safer Roads Singapore’ (SRS) action plan1 launched last
year, Traffic Police has begun installing digital red light cameras around
Singapore since 1 March 2014. This is an initiative under the SRS enforcement
pillar, to deter and detect motorists who endanger other road users by beating
the red lights. A total of 240 digital red light cameras will be installed island-wide
by mid 2015. To date, 50% of the 240 digital red light cameras have been
installed. Please refer to Annex A for the locations of the digital red light
cameras that have been installed so far.

Motorists are expected to slow down when approaching traffic junctions
and adhere to traffic signals. The presence of the digital red light cameras will
serve as a reminder to motorists to slow down when approaching traffic junctions.

Motorists who beat red lights are liable for 12 demerit points and a fine of
$200 for light vehicles and $230 for heavy vehicles. Motorists who beat the red
light twice within 24 months will have his/her license suspended.

The consequences of beating the red light can be severe and sometimes,
even fatal, as seen from the cases provided above. Traffic Police will be putting
up signages to remind motorists not to beat red lights at all locations with digital
red light cameras. In addition, Traffic Police will continue to reach out and
educate the public on the dangers of beating the red light, during regular road
safety talks and exhibitions.

Traffic Police wish to remind all motorists to drive safely on the roads.
Motorists should adopt the good road use habits of slowing down when
approaching traffic junctions, making sure the road ahead is clear of pedestrians
before moving off, and adhering strictly to traffic signals. In doing so, they can do
their part in making our roads safe for themselves and all other road users.
Traffic Police will continue to be firm in enforcing against errant motorists who
disregard such practices and beat the red lights.

Pedestrians should also play their part and cross the roads with due care
for their safety and develop the habit of crossing the road only when they have
checked and ascertained that it is safe to do so.
