#AztecWBB Opens 2014-15 Campaign with Two-Game Homestand
The San Diego State women’s basketball team begins its 39th season of competition and second under head
coach Stacie Terry this weekend when it opens a two-game homestand at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs will battle
Sacramento State in their season opener on Friday, Nov. 14, before Long Beach State invades “America’s
Finest City” two days later on Nov. 16. Both contests are slated for a 2 p.m. PT start and will be streamed live
via the Mountain West Network on www.goaztecs.com.
SDSU will play a season lid-lifter at home for just the fourth time in the last 10 years when it squares off
against a Hornet squad that handed the Scarlet and Black a tough 93-89 defeat in a high-scoring affair on the
road last season. Meanwhile, the Aztecs will tackle the 49ers in just the sixth meeting since 1995 between the
former WCAA/PCAA/Big West Conference rivals.
SDSU returns three starters and eight letterwinners from a year ago, including senior forward Khristina
Hunter (Fairfield, Calif.), who ranked sixth in the Mountain West with 6.9 rebounds per game and a .476 fieldgoal percentage during the 2013-14 campaign.
The Aztecs also welcome a highly touted freshman class, led by point guard McKynzie Fort (Fontana, Calif.),
who was named the Mountain West preseason freshman of the year last month.
In its lone tune-up before the regular season, SDSU emerged with a 55-52 exhibition victory over Point
Loma at Viejas Arena on Nov. 8, as junior forward Erimma Amarikwa (Vacaville, Calif.) finished with a teamhigh 10 points off the bench.

Scouting the Hornets
Sacramento State returns three starters and six letterwinners from a squad that posted an 18-12 overall
record and tied for sixth in the Big Sky Conference with
a 10-10 mark. Last year, the Hornets established a new
NCAA single-season standard with 373 three-point
field goals made, surpassing the old mark of 342 set
by Florida Gulf Coast during the 2011-12 campaign.
Individually, senior point guard Fantasia Hilliard is
Sacramento State’s top returning scorer and ball-handler after averaging 11.9 points and 6.5 assists last
season. A three-time honorable mention all-Big Sky
performer, Hilliard is the Hornets’ all-time leader with
529 career assists and is also tied for second in school
history with 209 steals.
Meanwhile, sophomore forward Margaret Huntington averaged a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest a
year ago, which ranked fourth in the Big Sky. Huntington was a prep teammate of Aztec sophomore Ariell
Bostick at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.

spending the previous four years at Division II Glenville State College in West
Virginia. Harkleroad was one of five finalists for the 2014 Spalding Maggie
Dixon Award, which honors the top Women’s Basketball Coaches Association
(WBCA) Division I first-year head coach.
Sacramento State was picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky preseason media poll and ninth by a panel of the league’s head coaches.
SDSU is 3-1 all-time against the Hornets after dropping a hard-fought 93-89
decision on the road in the 2013-14 season opener. Despite committing 34
turnovers and yielding 18 three-pointers, the Aztecs overcame a 50-31 firsthalf deficit to forge an 85-80 advantage with four minutes to go in the game.
However, Sacramento State closed with a 13-4 run, highlighted by Alle
Moreno’s four-point play that put the host school in front for good at 90-89
with 55 seconds remaining. SDSU missed its final three shots of the game,
while Sacramento State hit three of four free throws to seal the win.
Scouting the 49ers
Long Beach State welcomes back three starters and seven letterwinners after
logging a 17-15 overall record last season and tying for sixth place in the Big
West with an 8-8 ledger.
Like the Aztecs, the 49ers will also have a game under their belts after playing host to Seattle University on Friday.
LBSU is led by guard Raven Benton, who earned a spot on the Big West
all-freshman team last season after averaging 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds
in her rookie campaign. Also in the mix is senior guard Lauren Spargo, an
honorable mention all-Big West performer from a year ago who averaged a career-best 10.4 points and 3.7 boards per contest to go along with a team-high
43 three-point field goals.
Head coach Jody Wynn is entering her sixth year at the helm of the 49er
program after spending the previous five seasons as the senior assistant, recruiting coordinator and head of scouting at her alma mater, USC.
Last month, LBSU was pegged for a fifth-place finish in the Big West preseason media poll behind CSUN, Hawai’i, Cal Poly and UC Davis.
Although the 49ers have dominated the historical series after capturing the
first 35 varsity meetings from 1977-1990, the Aztecs have won five in a row,
including a 67-62 triumph at Viejas Arena in the last game between the two
schools in 2009.
SDSU is 97-83 against current members of the Big West.
2013-14 Rewind
After winning a program-record 27 games and capturing its second straight
Mountain West regular-season championship, San Diego State faced a year of
transition during the 2013-14 campaign. Not only did the Aztecs have to adjust
to a brand new coaching staff, but they were also forced to overcome the loss
of four senior starters who accounted for 64 percent of the team’s scoring from
the previous year. With five newcomers on board, growing pains were certainly
inevitable. However, SDSU flashed its resiliency throughout the season, finishing with a 13-17 overall record and tying for sixth in the MW standings with a
9-9 mark. Below are some additional obstacles the Aztecs endured last year:
• SDSU had to replace two starters, Erimma Amarikwa and Ahjalee Harvey,
who were lost for the year after suffering injuries during the non-conference
schedule. As a result, the Aztecs employed 10 different starting lineups last
season compared to just three in 2012-13.
• In addition, SDSU was faced with a difficult schedule featuring nine games
against teams that advanced to postseason competition, including four squads
that finished among the AP Top 25: South Carolina, Texas A&M, North Carolina
State and USC.
• SDSU dropped four very close games during the non-conference slate by
an average of three points in losses to Sacramento State, USC, San Diego and
UCLA.
Despite these tribulations, the gritty Aztecs found success on the court
during the 2013-14 campaign. Below are a few of the accomplishments of last
year’s squad:
• SDSU led the Mountain West as team in rebounding margin (+7.6) and rebounding defense (33.1/game).
• The Aztecs also ranked second in the conference in field-goal percentage
(.419) and offensive rebounds (15.3/game).
• SDSU averaged over 40 rebounds per contest (40.6) for the third straight
season, representing its longest stretch since a six-year span from 1984-89.
• The Aztecs handed two-time defending MW tournament champion Fresno
State its only home loss in conference play with a 70-69 upset on a late basket
by Danesha Long. Coupled with a win at Fresno in 2013, SDSU is the only MW
team to defeat the Bulldogs twice on the road in the past two years.
• The Aztecs topped the 80-point barrier in back-to-back conference games

Interesting Facts for 2014-15
With excitement brewing for head coach Stacie Terry’s
second season on Montezuma Mesa, below are a few
trends to watch in 2014-15:
• SDSU enters the season having claimed 35 of its
last 45 home games and has gone 67-22 (.753) on
the Viejas Arena floor since the start of the 2008-09
campaign.
• The Aztecs have recorded 65 Mountain West victories in the last six seasons after posting 31 wins in the
league’s first nine years.
• SDSU is 62-1 over the last three seasons when
leading with five minutes to go in the game, including
an 11-0 mark in 2013-14. The Aztecs’ lone blemish
during that stretch was a heartbreaking 59-58 defeat
at Washington in December 2012.
• SDSU is 33-13 in December games dating back
to the 2006-07 campaign, with seven of those losses
coming against teams either ranked or receiving votes
in the national polls.
• The Aztecs have advanced to finals of the MW
Championship in five of the last seven years after not
winning a single game in the tournament’s first eight
years of existence.
• For the second straight season, SDSU will play 18
conference games. The Aztecs will complete a homeand-away slate with eight squads, while facing San
José State (home) and Utah State (away) just once.

Playing its lone exhibition game of the 2014-15 campaign, the San Diego State women’s basketball team
needed a late rally to defeat a pesky Point Loma squad,
55-52, at Viejas Arena on Nov. 8. The Aztecs witnessed
a 14-point first-half lead evaporate before regrouping
with timely baskets and clutch free throws down the
stretch to escape with the win.
Despite owning a sizeable 45-24 rebounding margin and a 26-8 scoring advantage in the paint, SDSU
had its hands full against the Sea Lions, who tallied
16 points off 14 Aztec turnovers and drained eight
3-pointers on the afternoon.
Junior Erimma Amarikwa was the lone SDSU player in double figures, finishing with 10 points off the
bench, while senior Khristina Hunter (Fairfield, Calif.)
contributed nine points and seven rebounds. The Aztec
cause was also aided by junior Ahjalee Harvey who
totaled eight points, including five huge free throws,
while fellow classmate Deidra Smith added seven
points and game-best eight rebounds.
On the flip side, PLNU received a sparkling performance by Jessica Escorza, who led all players with 26
points on 7-of-11 shooting and nine free throws, while
Madison West scored 11 points of her own and tied
teammate Anna Viettry with a game-high four assists.
In a game that featured eight lead changes and four
ties, SDSU was the first to seize the momentum, utilizing a 19-3 blitz over a 12-minute span to build a 27-13
advantage with 1:30 left in the half. Amarikwa scored
three consecutive baskets during that stretch, while
Harvey capped the run with a three-pointer.
However, the Sea Lions managed to trim the deficit
by way of the foul shot, as Escorza, Alex Brunk and
Roya Rustamzada sank two free throws apiece in the
closing minute to help give contest its 29-19 score at
intermission.

PLNU turned on the afterburners with a 16-4 outburst in the opening eight minutes of the second half
to grab a 37-33 lead. Escorza was a one-person wrecking crew during the run, scoring 12 points, including a
3-pointer, while West and Jordan Ligons each added a
triple of their own. In the interim, the Aztecs tallied just
one basket on a jumper by freshman McKynzie Fort,
who also dished out four assists on the game.
SDSU kept things close over the ensuing three
minutes as a Hunter tip-in knotted the score at 4141 with 9:03 left to play. Moments later, a jumper by
Rustamzada and a 3-pointer by Brunk sandwiched
around an Amarikwa bucket gave the Sea Lions a slim
46-43 lead, before the Aztecs reeled off five straight
points, courtesy of a Fort basket and a triple by freshman Lexy Thorderson.
PLNU tied the game for the last time on a jumper by
Syndey Tonack; however, Fort corralled a huge offensive rebound and converted a layup after Harvey’s bid

for a second straight free throw went awry, giving SDSU the lead for good

The Sea Lions twice pulled to within one, including a 53-52 spread following a pair of Escorza foul shots with 27 seconds left on the clock, but
Harvey connected on two free throws on the Aztecs’ next foray down the
court to give the Scarlet and Black its winning margin of 55-52. On defense, SDSU clamped down over the final 20 seconds, forcing an errant
jumper by Paola Roa to preserve the victory.
As a team, the Aztecs shot 38 percent from the floor on 21-of-55 attempts, compared to a 35 percent clip (15-43) by the Sea Lions, who went

SDSU Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for
Jeff Jacobs JAM Center
San Diego State held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Jeff Jacobs JAM
Center, the men’s and women’s basketball performance center, on Aug. 27.
The JAM Center is scheduled to be completed by August 2015 and in time
for the start of the 2015-16 campaign.
SDSU President Dr. Elliot Hirshman, men’s hoops head coach Steve
Fisher and Jeff Jacobs spoke before a selected group of invited guests,
which included Steve and Lisa Altman, and Jim and Susan Morris, as well
as members of both the Aztec men’s and women’s basketball programs.
The master of ceremonies for the event was the voice of San Diego State
men’s basketball, Ted Leitner.
Preliminary site work started in July where the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center will be located, just south of the Fowler Athletics Center and east of
the football practice fields. The facility, which will support the continued
growth and development of the SDSU men’s and women’s basketball
teams, includes two full-length courts, eight baskets, locker rooms, film
rooms, team lounges, athletic training room and coaches locker rooms.
Hundreds of supporters contributed to the effort to make the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center a reality. In addition to the naming gift from Jeff Jacobs,
Hal and Debby Jacobs, Steve and Lisa Altman and Jim Morris, creating the
name “JAM” Center, sizeable donations were made from the Manna Charitable Foundation and the Walter and Betty Zable Foundation. The total cost
of the project is $14.5 million, of which $12.5 million in private funding has
been raised. No state funds will be used to construct this building.
The project was designed by JCJ Architecture and is being built by The
Hunt Construction Group.
For more information on the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center or to pledge a gift,
contact the Aztec Club at (619) 594-6444.
Up Next
Following this weekend’s homestand, San Diego State will rack up plenty
of frequent flyer miles when it embarks on a four-game road swing over
the ensuing nine days. The Aztecs will travel to the Palmetto State to lock
horns with Furman in Greenville, S.C., on Friday, Nov. 21, before battling
No. 2/2 South Carolina two days later on the Gamecocks’ home court in
Columbia. SDSU will then remain in the Southeast before heading to the
Caribbean for the 2014 San Juan Shootout in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The
Aztecs will square off against Idaho State in the opener on Thanksgiving
Day, Nov. 27, followed by a clash with Big Ten foe Michigan on Saturday,
Nov. 29.

an Diego native Stacie Terry was named the eighth
head coach in the history of the San Diego State
women’s basketball program on May 15, 2013.
During her first season on Montezuma Mesa, Terry
was saddled with the unenviable task of replacing four
senior starters who accounted for nearly 64 percent of
the team’s scoring offense from the previous year, as
well as overcoming the loss of two key players - forward
Erimma Amarikwa, a preseason all-Mountain West selection, and starting point guard Ahjalee Harvey - to injuries prior to conference play.
Despite those obstacles and a demanding schedule
featuring nine games with teams that eventually advanced to postseason competition, Terry’s squad flashed
its resiliency during the 2013-14 campaign, finishing
with a 13-17 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the MW.
Under Terry’s guidance, the Aztecs led the league in
rebounding margin and rebounding defense, while ranking second in field-goal percentage.
Individually, Terry also oversaw the progress of senior center Cierra Warren, who became the fifth SDSU
player in the last six years to receive first-team all-MW
recognition.
Prior to her arrival on The Mesa, Terry gained a
wealth of experience as an assistant coach at the Division
I level for 14 years, including five under head coach Nikki
Caldwell, who transformed UCLA into a powerhouse before restoring LSU to national prominence.
During Terry’s two seasons at LSU, the Lady Tigers
compiled a 45-23 overall record and earned two NCAA
tournament bids, including a Sweet 16 appearance
during the 2012-13 campaign. During that season, the
Lady Tigers also posted six victories against ranked
opponents and finished with their second-highest
scoring average (69.0) in the last seven years. Under
Terry’s guidance, forward LaShondra Barrett garnered
first-team all-Southeastern Conference accolades and
received honorable mention All-America distinction in
2012 before becoming a first-round draft choice of the
WNBA’s Washington Mystics.
Prior to her appointment at LSU, Terry served as an
assistant under Caldwell at UCLA from 2008-11, helping the Bruins gain national acclaim with a pair of NCAA
tournament appearances. During Terry’s tenure, UCLA
posted 72 overall victories, as the 2010-11 squad finished with a 28-5 record, setting a school record for fewest losses in a single season to go with a No. 7 national
ranking. In addition, the Bruins signed the fourth-ranked
recruiting class that season, according to ESPN HoopGurlz, while Terry helped mentor first-team all-Pac-10
performers in Doreena Campbell, Darxia Morris and Jasmine Dixon, a 2012 honorable mention AP All-America
selection, as well as all-conference freshman honorees
Atonye Nyingifa and Markel Walker.
Terry spent the 2007-08 campaign at Southern Mississippi, as the Golden Eagles posted a 21-14 record and
earned a postseason berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). While at Southern Miss, Terry spearheaded the development and coordination of the
Lady Eagle recruiting campaign. Her responsibilities also
included working with the perimeter players, scouting
opponents and film breakdown, as well as coordinating
all of the team’s community service events.
Terry also coached for three seasons from 2004-07
as an assistant under Hall of Fame head coach Theresa Grentz at Illinois, where the Fighting Illini had three
straight recruiting classes ranked among the top 25 in
the nation, according to Blue Star Basketball, and made
three consecutive trips to the WNIT. Her primary duties
included defensive instruction and working with the perimeter players.
In addition, Terry coached at Dayton during the
2003-04 season following a three-year stint at Louisville
from 2000-03. With the Cardinals, Terry’s responsibilities encompassed recruiting, scouting, player development, summer camps and serving as a liaison for
the program’s community service outreach. Louisville
captured the Conference USA regular-season title and
earned a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2001 before
making a WNIT appearance in 2002. She also assisted
in signing the nation’s 21st-ranked recruiting class in
2002-03, according to All-Star Girls Report. Terry recruited and coached all-Conference USA honoree Lori
Nero, a draft choice of the WNBA’s Houston Comets, as
well as Sara Nord, who finished her collegiate career as
the Cardinals’ all-time assist leader and ranks among the
top 15 scorers in school history.
Terry enjoyed a successful collegiate playing career
at the University of Texas at Arlington, winning four varsity letters from 1994-98 under head coach Mike Dean.
She earned first-team all-Southland Conference honors
after leading the Mavericks in scoring with 17.4 points
per game as a senior in 1997-98. Terry scored 1,169
points during her career at UTA and still ranks among the
school’s top 10 in three-point field goals made (third),
assists (sixth), steals (seventh) and free-throw percentage (10th). She is just one of 17 players in Maverick history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau, while her .335
career three-point field-goal percentage is also a school
and Southland Conference career record.
Terry played one season of professional basketball in
Warsaw, Poland, averaging 12.0 points and 6.0 assists
with the Polonia Phoenix, before returning to UT Arlington to begin her coaching career as a graduate assistant
in 1999.
Terry prepped at El Capitan High and held the Vaqueros’ career scoring record for three years following her
graduation. She was inducted into the school’s athletic
hall of fame in 2008.
