Characteristics of Dielectrics
Film Capacitors are made of different dielectric materials. The special features of the dielectrics have an impact on the electrical behaviour.
PET (Polyester, Polyethylene terephthalate)
PEN (Polyethylene naphtalate)
As its most important property, polyethylene terephthalate
has high capacitance per volume due to its high dielectric
constant and high dielectric strength. It has further excellent
self-healing properties and good temperature stability.
Typical applications: Bypassing, coupling, filtering
Polyethylene naphtalate is used when a higher temperature resistance is required compared to PET. Relatively high
dielectric constant and dielectric strength as well as availability of thin films provide good volumetric efficiency for
metallized construction. High melting point allows SMD
constructions and service in high ambient temperatures.
Typical applications with small bias D.C. voltages and/or
small A.C. voltages at low frequencies.
PPS (Polyphenylene sulphide)
This dielectric has low losses, a wide operating temperature
range and good stability. Typical applications: Timers and
filters. Furthermore automotive and other applications in
high ambient temperature
MP (Metallized paper)
Metallized paper has a high dielectric constant and excellent
self-healing properties as well as high ionization level due to
impregnated dielectric material. Typical applications: X and
Y RFI-applications because metallized paper capacitors are
neither actively nor passively flammable. Furthermore they
are used for low frequency applications.
PP (Polypropylene)
Polypropylene films have superior electrical characteristics.
The film features very low dielectric losses, a high insulation
resistance and a very high dielectric strength. Furthermore
these films have excellent self-healing properties, good stability and a close tolerance up to 1%.
Typical applications: AC & pulse at high frequencies as well
as radio interference suppression.

Safety and Interference Suppression
Radio interference suppression capacitors need not only
satisfy EMC requirements in suppressing outgoing interference from an application but they also have to protect
the application from incoming power surges.
Before radio interference suppression capacitors can be
used in a main application, they must fulfil safety standards
defined by national authorities.
Approved products receive safety certificates and are
allowed to have following safety marks:
Dependent on the application radio interference
suppression capacitors are subdivided into two groups,
Class X and Class Y.
X-capacitors, also called across the line capacitors, are
connected between the mains terminals. These capacitors
are capacitors with unlimited capacitance for use where
their failure due to a short circuit would not lead to
the danger of an electric shock.
Y-capacitors, also called line bypass capacitors, are capacitors, which serve to reduce the asymmetrical interference
voltage and are located between a live conductor and the
metal case which may be touched.

Capacitors connected in parallel with the mains
Choose the right X2 Capacitors
Because of the high energy availability and the severe environment of surge voltages and pulses, applications of capacitors in
connection to the mains must be chosen very carefully. Two kinds of connections are possible.
1. Capacitors connected in parallel with the mains
The solution
X2 capacitors are specified for applications where the
capacitor is connected in parallel with the mains to
help reducing emission and increasing the immunity of
radio interference. The capacitors fulfill all requirements
for safety, in a good price / case size ratio as long as the
capacitors are used according to their specification.
In order to preclude the Corona Effect our suppliers offer
a wide range of suitable products. These special parts have
a different capacitor construction where two capacitors
sections are internally connected in series.
2. Capacitors connected in series with the mains
These products are suitable for applications where a high
capacitance stability over time is required.
Due to the fact that the capacitors can be connected in series
with the mains, e.g. as voltage divider, it is possible, after a
relatively short operating time of just 1 or 2 years, to measure
a sizeable capacitance decrease. This is known as the Corona
Effect.
The Corona Effect
The voltage on the capacitor is divided by two.
→Ionization is not possible.
Energy meters
Control boards for white goods and home appliances
e.g. timer applications
Relays and switching gears for industrial applications
Applications where the capacitor is used to store energy
or to divide the main voltage
This capacitance decrease is caused by ionization, i.e.
discharge of the capacitor on the film’s surface via small
electric arcs. The metallization of the film will be oxidized.
Further influences to the behavior regarding Corona can
be climatic ambient temperature, such as humidity and
temperature, and the condition of the network.

Miniaturized, radial and axial Capacitors
Film Capacitors can be divided into two basic construction types: film/foil capacitors and metallized film capacitors.
The plastic film is in the majority of cases polyester or polypropylene.
Film/foil capacitors
Film/foil capacitors consist of two metal foil electrodes, made of aluminum foil, separated by a piece of plastic film.
Characteristics:
Plastic film
