Dr. Leanne M. Tigert, Spiritual Counselor, Licensed Pastorl Psychotherapist This workshop will present the benefits of mindfulness meditation to caregivers as a tool of stress reduction, relaxation, and strength. We will learn and practice a brief meditation and name resources available to support participants in their practice. Those who are new to meditation and those who are experienced will be able to benefit from this time. ♦ Workshop B “Scattered & Smothered” - Chaplain Jeanne Childs, MA, BCC Family caregiving can knock you off your rocker! Somehow perfectly balanced people can get unhinged, smothered, scattered, and otherwise overwhelmed. Before you spin off into space, come to this workshop! Together we will discover how to make life more manageable and enjoyable, despite the demands on you. ♦ Workshop C Compassionate Care: Instilling Hope When We Have Little Left to Give! - Dr. Donna White, Addiction Specialist - Certified Compassion Fatigue Therapist and Educator The purpose of this workshop is to present the profile of a person who may be suffering from Compassion Stress. The interactive seminar will identify common stressors that impact performance of professionals and caregivers who provide care to an individual who is in need or who suffers. The learner will be given methodologies to identify patterns of Compassion Stress, and strategies to promote a renewed sense of identity. The overall goal is to encourage self-care so caregivers at any level will instill hope in their lives as they continue in the daily work of caring for others. 9 9 10 2014 Caregiver’s Conference Afternoon Workshops ♦ Workshop D Walk In My Shoes: Developing Peer and Personal Support as a Caregiver- Heather Ann Soldner, M.A., Clinical Mental Health Counselor This presentation will mimic a traditional support-group format, providing attendees with not just peer support through dialogue, but also information and education on how to gain balance as a caregiver in any setting. Open and honest dialogue will be encouraged through a group activity called, “walk in my shoes”. This dialogue is designed to help new and seasoned caregivers find common ground, tips and tricks to surviving the caregiving role, and a basic emotional coping tool…humor. ♦ Workshop E “Dealing Proactively with Chronic Sorrow”- John Richards, MSW In this workshop, we will explore strategies for coping with our own feelings of sadness and loss in ways that are constructive and which do not spread our “stuff” onto our loved ones and which encourage our own growth in looking for positives, hopefulness, self-respect, and taking care of ourselves. The term “ambiguous grief” will be discussed as it relates to long-term rethinking of our life situations. Note: There will be no effort to push or encourage any particular religious point of view, but persons attending this workshop should be aware that terms such as “God, spirituality, prayer, higher power, or inner peace” may be mentioned. Persons who would be offended by such items should not attend. ♦ Workshop F A Caregiver’s Guide to Assistive Technologies- Frank Byrne, MA Everyday there seems to be a new piece of technology designed to assist the family caregiver and their care partners – high tech smartphone apps, computer programs, communication devices, gadgets and equipment of all types. While potentially helpful, sorting through the maze of options can be overwhelming for even the tech savvy….let alone the novice. This workshop will give a big picture overview of assistive technologies then focus in on some of the very best low cost, easy to use smartphone and tablet apps to help the family caregiver. 11 11 The Moore Center There’s more to us than you probably thought. For more than 50 years, The Moore Center has been a leader in helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and adults with Acquired Brain Disorders (ABD). Beyond these constituents, though, we also serve children and families and we’ve established Moore Options for Seniors, whose services enable seniors to live independently, or as part of a family if they choose, with the supports they need. We’ve also become a central resource for training the human services workforce. At The Moore Center, empowering people and making room for their voices and their choices is central to what we do. We’re all about meeting challenges. So are the people we serve. 195 McGregor Street, Unit 400, Manchester, NH 03102 Call us: 603-206-2700 Email us: [email protected] • Visit us: www.moorecenter.org 12 2014 Coalition of Caring Planning Committee Front Row LtoR: Sandy Forrest, Bernie Seifert, Martha Burnham, Jeannine Leclerc. Its mission is to promote and strengthen the well being of caregivers who provide care for a disabled or ill child, adult or seniors through a statewide annual caregiver’s conference. The coalition is comprised of caregivers and organizations that support the elderly, children with disabilities, adults with disabilities and diseases, hospice patients and the chronically ill. It is our intention to continue to invite all that is interested to our committee as we continue our community outreach. Check out the Coalition of Caring’s Website at www.coalitionofcaring.org. Please help us with caregiver outreach by spreading the word about our annual caregiver’s conference. Next year consider inviting a fellow caregiver who has never attended the conference. 13 13 “The love we give away is the only love we keep.” ~Elbert Hubbard Providing an alternative to institutionalized and campus living for persons with an acquired brain injury and other neurological differences. www.northcountryindependentliving.com North Country Independent Living (NCIL) is proud to be celebrating 19 years of providing quality services for persons with a brain injury and other neurological differences.
