Dear Parents and Caregivers
Last week our school opened its doors again to
celebrate everything great about Science and
inspire a new generation of budding scientists to
think, create and wonder.
Explosive entertainment from ex-student Dr Graham Walker
I heard many positive comments about the quality
and standard of displays and interactive activities
from parents and students throughout the evening.
I wanted to express a sincere thank you to all staff
involved for a fantastic Science evening - it was a
great community event. Special thanks to the
dedication of the Science committee for their
organisation and our team of expert chefs/cooks
that made the night a great success.
Thanks also to Sarah Belling for securing 4 family
passes to Questacon that were used as awards.
Do water and oil mix?
Our students made slime, rockets and spinners,
they investigated the moon, air pressure and made
spaghetti constructions to name a few. Other
students made solar ovens reaching temperatures
of 130 degrees Celsius - explored technology
designs by making gravity racers and experienced
interactive volcanoes and exploding teddy bears.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
KALEEN COMMUNITY CONCERT
Just a reminder that the Kaleen Community
Concert will be held at school on 15 December
from 5:00-6:45pm. Bring your own picnic or buy
a sausage and drink from the BBQ and enjoy a
series of short songs/presentations from each year
level. Everyone is welcome and we look forward
to seeing you there to celebrate a great year.
YEAR 5 CAMP
Commemorating Remembrance Day 2014
This week we celebrated Remembrance Day on
Tuesday 11 November in recognition of those
who served for and on behalf of Australia. Each
child was provided with a poppy (a symbol of
sacrifice) and heard poems and stories from our
wonderful Year 6 students. Special thanks to Mrs
Moran for organising this donation from the ACT
RSL.
PREPARING FOR 2015
We have started planning for 2015. In the coming
weeks we will be allocating students to classes.
This is an important process which involves many
considerations. We look at the social needs of
each child, the academic ability and talents,
personalities of the children, gender balance of
classes, learning styles of individuals, friendship
groupings and past histories.
Attached to this newsletter is a note inviting you
to nominate your child for the Accelerated
Learning Program for 2015. The information you
provide will inform class groupings for 2015 but
does not guarantee your child’s inclusion in any
particular class grouping. Decisions about class
groupings will be made in the best interest of
students and take into account your child's social,
emotional and intellectual needs. Nomination for
the Accelerated Learning Program will apply to
students who will be in Year 1-Year 5 for 2015.
At Kaleen Primary we strive to ensure that all
students are provided with opportunities for
enrichment and extension. Our school is moving
to ensure greater integration of students across
classes. Should you have questions please discuss
with your child's teacher.
In 2015, Year 5 camp will be in Term 1. A note
will be forwarded seeking your expression of
interest for your son or daughter to participate.
This experience has been designed to assist
students learn about each other and working
together in teams. Should you require any further

LEGO FOR KIPS (KALEEN INCLUSIVE
PLAY SESSIONS)
I appreciate Lego is a very expensive investment
over the years and families typically recycle
collections for use by siblings and relatives.
Kaleen Primary’s KIPS program is seeking
donations of Lego to support its structured play
sessions. If you or a relative has Lego that is no
longer being used and would like to donate it,
please bring to the Front Office - all donations of
Lego will be gratefully received and benefit
Kaleen Primary students.
BOOK PACKS 2015
Important information about BookPacks for 2015
will be distributed this week. Staff have worked to
ensure BookPacks costs have either been reduced
or are on parity with 2014 Bookpack costs. To
provide flexibility and choice you will have the
options of replacing items on lists and paying
online. Should you have not received this, please
contact Mrs Lynne Sheville.
PARENT FORUM
As a follow up to the recent Parent Forum, I will
release a topic from our forum each fortnight
seeking your ideas and thoughts. Each topic will
have a number of proposals for your
consideration. This week it is School Facilities read on to see how you can provide feedback and
support our continuous improvement.
SWIM SCHOOL 2015
NOVEMBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Kaleen Primary is offering 164 places in its K-2
swimming program for 2015. The program will
cost $100 per child this provides bus transport and
ten, 45 min swimming lessons at the AIS over the
2 weeks (Term 1 Weeks 7 and 8). More info will
be provided before the end of the year.
ICT
Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT) have become an essential part of our lives
and there are certainly many benefits, there are
also some areas of concern. With the increase of
mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, mp3
players and portable gaming devices with Internet
capability, more and more students are using
social media to communicate with friends.
A reminder for parents that students should gain
permission from other students prior to posting
any image on the web that could identify that
student. It is important to remember that once an
image is published on the web (social media,
YouTube, etc) the image becomes public and is
difficult to remove. Care should be undertaken
when publishing photos on the web to ensure
students’ privacy is not breached. Most social
media applications have an explicit minimum age
requirement. To sign up to Facebook or get an
email account you need to be at least 13 years old.
To use instant messaging apps you need to be
even older. WhatsApp terms and conditions state
that you must be at least 16 years old to use their
service. Kik has classified itself as 17+ on the App
Store because of the multimedia sharing
capability.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Homework Club: for all students at school
The Homework Club has been well attended. We
have had students from Kindergarten to Year 6
coming in to get some extra assistance. It is on
Monday and Friday lunchtimes.
Kaleen Primary does not support primary students
having personal social media accounts such as
these. When students enter high school there is
peer pressure to use social media. Most primary
school age students do not yet understand the
risks, nor have the skills to use them responsibly.
At Kaleen Primary we are committed to educate
students and develop skills related to digital
citizenship. Students will continue to explore a
range of digital technologies to support their
learning in various curriculum areas and will learn
how to engage responsibly in digital
environments.

BASKETBALL CHAMPS
Year 5-6 Girls
Year 3-4 Girls
On Saturday 1 November the girls Year 3-4
basketball team went to the AIS Arena to play in
the ACT Grand Final of the Year 3-4 Sue Geh
school basketball competition. After winning the
Northside competition we played Holy Family
who won the Southside competition. We all had a
fantastic time. We also won the competition. We
were all able to have an individual photo with the
trophy since we won the competition.
Many thanks to Mr Campbell for filling in on the
day for our coach Mrs Wallace who wasn’t able
to make it and to Margaret Wilson, our team
manager. We would also like to thank Mrs
Wallace for getting us through all the games
before the Grand Final. Thank you to all the
parents and caregivers for supporting us and
cheering us on.
On Saturday 1 November the Year 5-6 girls’
basketball team went to the AIS basketball arena
to compete in the grand final of the Sue Geh cup
tournament. We played St Johns Primary School
and we won a shield on behalf of the school. All
the girls played exceptionally well and
represented Kaleen Primary excellently. A special
thank you to our coaches throughout the
tournament, Mrs Wallace, Mr Campbell and
Sanita Colton.

Science Festival
Thank you to everyone who came along and made our Science Festival a huge success. It was wonderful to
see so many families learning and exploring together. In addition to all of the activities planned by our
classroom teachers, the performances by former Kaleen Primary School student Graham Walker were an
explosive addition to the evening.
It was great to see the effort that families put into the Science displays and competitions. With so many great
entries it was hard to decide on the winners.
