Well done for considering higher education! I hope that our prospectus will be able to give you all of the information you need to make your decision about whether to join us at ICEM and which of our courses is right for you. If you are not sure or have more questions please call us or come and visit us on one of our open days that we run throughout the year where you will be able to meet our lecturers and some of our students, see our specialist facilities and how we use our unique fireground for specialist training. Details of our Open Day dates are on our website at www.icemoman.com Alternatively, come on one of our campus tours that we run every Thursday afternoon, to look around our facilities. At ICEM you will be at the heart of everything we do. We are the first college in Oman to develop a ‘Student Charter’ which identifies a contract between you, the College and your Student Council. It defines what you can expect from us and from your Student Council and it also defines what we expect from you. We are the first College in Oman to define the ‘Essentials of Teaching and Learning’ which identifies what you can expect from us in the classroom. Our courses are very vocational and we aim to give you the best possible chance of a fantastic career. It is this that means we are ‘Empowering minds and powering careers’ We have very high standards because the courses we offer and the careers you will go into are safety critical and of huge importance to the regions economic development plan. Of course I hope that you will decide to apply to ICEM for one of our courses, but it is much more important to me that you choose the right course and the right college for you even if that is not ICEM so that you get the most out of your higher education experience. Students are provided with a broad and rigorous programme of vocationally relevant and applied study in the fields of Fire Safety Engineering and Management. Through the programme, students’ intellectual development and their familiarity with the industry is enhanced and extended in order to produce competent and resourceful individuals able to arrive at fire safety solutions to engineering, technological, organisational and managerial problems. Subjects covered in the four year programme are related to Fire Science, Design for Fire Safety, Fire and Smoke Control, Fire Fighting Operations and Management, Fire Risk Assessment and Management, Fire Protection and Emergency Strategies and Planning, Health and Safety Management, and Project Management. The programme will also develop communication skills in English to enable effective operation in an engineering or managerial role where this written and oral language ability is required. Engineering is a field which explores the various possibilities of preventing fires. It can be defined as the art and science of designing buildings and facilities for life safety and property protection in the event of an unwanted fire. This includes the application of scientific and engineering principles, based on an understanding of the phenomena and effects of fire and of reaction and behaviour of people, property and the environment as well as the impact of fire protection systems including detection, alarm and active fire protection systems. Fire Safety Management is aimed at those who would like to assume managerial responsibility for fire safety in for example, leisure complexes, office blocks, large shopping centres, public services and factories. Such roles place emphasis on human behaviour, regulation and legislation and the evaluation and development of policy for fire safety procedures and materials used in the construction industry. This course can be studied full time or part time. Part time study may be by one or two days per week; Two weeks study followed by two weeks at work; Evening study. Part time study options are available subject to sufficient demand. The range of such buildings is wide and includes familiar buildings such as offices, factories, schools, hospitals, airports and also more specialised facilities such as in oil drilling, refineries, process production plants, warehouses, depots and transportation systems. Facilities Management is also concerned with responsibilities relating to the provision of building services, the management of occupational health, safety and the environment and operational matters such as car parking, catering, security and internal communications and partnering. The University of Central Lancashire uses a Modular Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (MODCATS) to enable students to accumulate modules by pursuing planned programmes of study leading to specified awards. The full time programme consists of 6 modules studied each year which are delivered as follows: The course emphasises facilities management in the context of the built environment and its application to buildings. However, facilities management in its widest sense is not just about maintenance and controlling costs. In order to support the core activities of the business, facilities management must ensure the smooth running of the non-core services through careful planning and management. These services may include: health and safety monitoring (incorporating fire safety), component specification; information and communication technology and software; building services and operational services. Operational services may include car parking, security, catering, welfare, crèche facilities, cleaning and waste disposal, energy efficiency and distribution, internal communications and partnering. Figures released by Middle East Strategy Advisors (MESA) show that the facilities management market in the Gulf will be worth an estimated US$ 892 billion over the next 25 years. Facilities management, which advocates an integrated approach to managing the built environment effectively, is still an emerging concept in the Middle East, yet experts predict that the industry will eventually outstrip the region’s booming construction business. Subjects covered in this four year programme are related to construction materials, construction technology, surveying and CAD, quantity surveying, management for health, safety and the environment, legal principles and contract law, accounting and finance and project management. The programme will also develop communication skills in English to enable effective operation in a managerial role where this written and oral language ability is required. Year 1: Personal and Professional Development 1, Planning and Construction of Facilities, Building Technology 1, Organizational Management & Economics, Maths and Science for Built Environment, Surveying and CAD. Target or Exit Award: Certificate of Higher Education in Facilities Management Year 2: Personal and Professional Development 2, Health, Safety & Environment, Building Technology 2, Laws of Built Environment, Built Environment Systems & Services, Construction Technology.
