MUSIC LOVERS
REJOICE
Regina Public Library is thrilled to
welcome Regina Symphony Orchestra
(RSO) for another season of amazing free
performances at Central Library.
The RSO Free Concert Series begins in
November. All performances will take
place on the second Level Mezzanine at
RPL’s Central Library. Each performance
will feature a different theme and a variety
of musicians, and there will be plenty of
comfortable seating for this cozy, intimate
concert series by some of our city’s
best musicians.

to RPL materials, programs and services.

Please note that some library
cards must be renewed in person.

NEW SCULPTURE IN CHILDREN'S
AREA AT REGENT PLACE
If you’re visiting Regent Place Branch, be sure to check out our
newest sculpture in the children’s area. A carving by local artist
Garry Thurber was presented to RPL’s Regent Place Branch at a
special reception on Tuesday, October 7.
This new addition to RPL’s permanent collection, entitled "The
Hiding", was donated to the library by Dr. Roberta McKay and Elmer
Brenner. Carved from soapstone, the piece was based on a story
written by the artist about the lost city of Atlantis. Young and old alike are welcome to touch the sculpture and explore
its many intricacies.
RPL extends its thanks to Dr. McKay and Mr. Brenner for this
wonderful donation to the collection, which is sure to bring a great
deal of joy to patrons of all ages.

RPL would like to extend heartfelt condolences to Garry Thurber’s family
after his recent passing. His legacy will live on through his unique and

Happy Holidays
Clerks and pages are some of the most important people in the
library. Pages are responsible for ensuring books are shelved
properly, lending a hand to patrons in the stacks and keeping the
library looking good. Our clerks assist patrons with finding reading
materials, managing their accounts, and using other library resources,
such as the public computers. We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the clerks and
pages at George Bothwell, who were inadvertently missed in our
feature on that branch in our last edition. Many thanks to Mavis,
Carol, Beth, Jana, Shelley, Alexis, Patrick and Shazia for all their
hard work!

Makerspace?
A Makerspace is a community-operated
workspace that provides free access
to technology and manufacturing
equipment. Users with common
interests can come together to make
stuff using the technology available.
A Makerspace encourages
experimentation and discovery
through collaboration and play.
A Makerspace is as diverse as its
users – while the traditional focus has
been on technology, a Makerspace
can be used to share and learn about
any number of topics: art, sewing,
manufacturing, carpentry… the list is
as long as users’ imaginations.
In fact, the list gets longer as artists,
engineers, scientists, hobbyists,
inventors, tinkerers, dabblers and others
come together to discuss ideas.
Users share and learn from each other
in a collaborative, creative atmosphere,
and interesting ideas, concepts and
mashups occur.
RPL’s upcoming Makerspace Conference
offers a dynamic range of speakers
and sessions. From steampunk style
to wearable electronics, yarn-bombing
to Lego mindstorming, horticulture to
green screen editing, our tradeshow will

Comprised of primarily sculptural works,
From What Remains posits links between
aesthetic and scientific methodologies. Each
artist infuses data (in the form of found
objects gathered from remote sites) with
poetic and speculative meaning via material
transformations, replications, assemblages,
and tests that mimic anthropological and
archeological processes, but also suggest a
kind of alchemy or magical transformation
has taken place.

SOFTER SIDE
Curated by Wendy Peart, Curator of
Education and Community Outreach
Jasmine Reimer, currently based in Guelph,
explores a fascination with found household
objects, perfectionism and material culture.
In order to deflate prescriptive approaches
to interior design and its denotation of high/
low class structures, Reimer fuses everyday
objects with fabricated raw materials to
refuse their functionality and their aesthetic,
creating an evocative mixture of the familiar
and the grotesque.

This solo exhibition by Regina-born artist
Bill Burns features watercolour paintings,
text-based 2D works, photographs, videos,
and sculptures such as scale models of
international art galleries and bobbleheads
of famous curators. The works act
like prayer-like pleas to the “art world
celebrities” who shape artistic production,
and whose presence is critical to the
ecology of the international art scene.

Bulgarian-Canadian artist Biliana Velkova’s
exhibition reflects on how culture and
commerce shape our perceptions of nature,
which in turn contribute to a sense of national
identity. Photographs depict Velkova as a symbol
of Disneyfied “Canadianness,” wearing elegant
fairy tale gowns, surrounded by magnificent
scenery. A massive white neon prairie landscape
drawing further emphasizes the commercial
appeal of “the Canadian wild.”

DAVID RIEL.

Regina artist David Garneau will present
a new performance artwork, Dear John;
Louis David Riel. on the 130th anniversary
of the death of the Métis leader. Dressed
as Riel, Garneau will enact a performative
conversation with the statue of Canada’s
first Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald, who
charged Riel with high treason, effectively
sentencing him to his death.

SCHIZOPHRENIA
Theory for Fun is a book club for anyone who
wants to discuss critical theory in a convivial

chapter in Gilles Delueze and Félix Guattari's
Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia over

evaluated by a panel of independent

IN SITU: A PERFORMANCE BY THE
GLOBE THEATRE YOUTH COMPANY
Under the direction of Judy Wensel, Regina
Public Library is the inspiration for a new
piece of theatre, providing both the content
and the context for the performance. This
site-specific performance will lead both
audience and actors through a unique and
responsive theatre experience. The Youth
Company is an ensemble of young adults that
have been creating together at the Globe
Theatre School for several years. Reception

RPL's Connaught
Branch is in the
heart of the
city's Cathedral
Village.
Patrons are often greeted by name as
they enter the branch by Public Service
Clerks Melanie Tholl, Beth Ellsworth,
Jessica Eissfeldt and Hongli Li, and Senior
Public Service Clerk Cheryl Martin. In
fact, staff claim to know the names of 90
per cent of their patrons!
In fact, some say the library IS the
heart of Cathedral Village. “There
is strong support for libraries in the
Cathedral area,” Branch Head Tanya
Rogoschewsky said. “We’re lucky to
be surrounded by a community that
believes strongly in the importance of
libraries and the programs and services
we provide.”
Library Assistants Kaiti Webb and
Diana Cook help to instill the feeling
of community within the branch. They
work hard to address the unique needs
of their patrons, and think up new ways
to ensure those needs are met into the
future.
The Connaught Branch is a popular
destination for children and adults of
all ages. “We have a lot of foot traffic
throughout the day,” Rogoschewsky
said. “There is definitely a sense of
community at this branch.”
Connaught is also known for its
programs, in particular its food
programming. “We take advantage of
the range of restaurants in this city
to bring some unique and “flavourful”
programming to our patrons,”
Rogoshewsky said. From wine and
beer tasting to summer seafood and
everything in between, the staff at
Connaught are always cooking up new
and interesting programs of interest.

welcome all visitors with a smile and an
