2014 SEED GUIDE CORN • ALFALFA

2014 SEED GUIDE
CORN • ALFALFA • SOYBEANS
Reasons for Optimism
In many parts of the upper Midwest, 2013 has been tough on
farmers. Winter took a heavy toll on alfalfa and winter grains.
An exceptionally late, wet spring pushed planting date back
by as much as a month—if the crops got in at all. In some
southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa counties, 20%-25%
of potential crop acres weren’t planted.
That, in turn, led many of you to switch hybrids and varieties.
There was also an unprecedented interest in cover crops for
all those prevented planting acres. We were busy and thankful
for our extensive experience with the wide variety of cover
crop options we handle. Finally, cold and wet turned hot and
dry, with many areas going six to eight weeks without rain.
I’m ready to move on to 2014. How about you?
Anticipating a new season
We’re well positioned to move ahead. Despite the difficulties
2013 presented, Viking Seed continued to experience record
strong growth. In 2012-13 we saw our corn sales grow 14%—
and that despite the fact that we had more corn returned than
any year in our history due to prevented planting.
Why such strong growth?
My answer: For all the reasons that make Viking brand seeds
a smart choice for farmers looking for strong performance
and knowledgeable support at a very competitive price.
Commitment
We’re committed to helping our customers enjoy success in
a new production year. As evidence, we’ve extended our 9%
seed discount to Nov. 22, giving you more time to get the
best possible deal. And, for the first time we’re offering JDF
prime minus 1% plus Early Pay discounts.
Choice
We offer true choice. Because we work with all the major
breeding programs in the U.S. (and some of the small ones
as well), our germplasm pipeline is incredibly wide. Because
we’re independent, we can offer you choices from all these
sources that truly fit your acres and the way you farm them.
If you want SmartStax,® Roundup Ready,® LibertyLink,® or
conventional options, we have them.
Performance
Viking seed conducts our own replicated testing, comparing
the newest genetics and traits so we can offer you the best
options available. Year after year, Viking brand hybrids and
varieties compete head to head with the best, frequently
turning in the top yields in university and F.I.R.S.T. trials.
Value
Everything we’ve listed translates to value. Now add in excellent
return on investment, expert agronomic advice, responsive
service, and simple, consistent, fair pricing (everybody pays
the same price—it doesn’t get any fairer than that), and you
can understand why more people buy our seed every year.
Word does get around. Find out what your neighbors are
talking about and try Viking brand corn and soybeans in
2014. It’s a great way to start a new year. 
Viking Corn & NorthStar Genetics
L to R: Matt Wolles, Dan Hogstad, Andy Beyer, Scott Youngren,
Jeffrey Sorenson, Kyle Krump, Mac Ehrhardt
The first year of the Viking Corn & NorthStar Genetics partnership
was an unqualified success, and we are excited about the future!
As many of you know, last year NorthStar Genetics became a
distributor of Viking Corn. NorthStar Genetics of Wanamingo,
MN is the largest privately-held seed company in Minnesota.
NorthStar began marketing Viking hybrids to corn growers in
Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota in 2012.
For our existing customers, nothing has changed. You will
continue to buy your seed directly from us, or from one of
our dealers, as you have in the past. But this arrangement
has been extremely positive for Viking Seed and for growers
in NorthStar Genetics’ primary area of sales (North Dakota,
2
South Dakota, and the northern two-thirds of Minnesota).
This partnership benefits Viking Seed because, as our sales
increase, we can afford to spend more money on research and
improve our product offerings. This partnership benefits the
customers of NorthStar in the following ways:
•PERFORMANCE
We are excited to offer a lineup of corn that is second to none.
• REFUGE-IN-A-BAG SIMPLICITY
Of the 20 corn hybrids (78-day to 104-day) NorthStar is
offering this year, 16 do not require a separate refuge.
• REAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF
NORTHERN CORN GROWERS
Growing corn in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota
is not like growing corn in Iowa or Illinois. NorthStar Genetics
understands this because our people live and work here.
• CORN PLOTS WHERE YOU PLANT CORN
NorthStar Genetics is putting in their own replicated corn
plots in SD, ND, and northern MN to test their hybrids where
they are actually going to be planted.
To contact NorthStar Genetics, please call 507-824-2878. 

Seed Treatment on Viking Corn
All Viking Corn hybrids will be treated with Acceleron® or Cruiser Extreme 250,®
and SabrEx for corn. This means you get early-season protection from wireworms, black cutworms, and seed corn maggots as
well as broad-spectrum protection from fungal damping-off diseases. Cruiser Extreme 250 is a natural fit with industry trends
toward earlier planting dates, a steady increase in no-till and minimum-till operations, and growers planting higher-value seed.

Hybrids With Agrisure® GT (Glyphosate Tolerant)
Agrisure GT provides tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides (including Roundup ® ) with a
full range of assurances which do not limit a grower’s glyphosate brand selection.
Corn hybrids with Agrisure GT exhibit outstanding tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides—
the active ingredient in Roundup and Touchdown® herbicides.
Corn hybrids with Agrisure GT are carefully selected to provide not only outstanding glyphosate tolerance via the trait
but also to preserve the genetic potential of the hybrid via the proven inbred line conversion process. This dual focus
results in new choices of corn hybrids that deliver best-in-class performance.

Viking Corn Hybrids With LibertyLink® Herbicide Resistance
“If you’ve got a lambsquarter problem or a waterhemp
problem, I’ll take a full rate of Ignite over a full rate of
Roundup hands down. The Ignite just does a much better
job.”—Huntley, MN
• V iking LibertyLink (Herculex ® and Bt11) hybrids contain
a gene which confers resistance to IGNITE ® (Liberty ® )
herbicide.
• I GNITE is a contact herbicide which is labeled to
be sprayed over the top of LibertyLink corn from
emergence through the V-7 stage of growth or a height
of 24 inches (and 24” to 36” corn with drop nozzles).
Rainfast four hours after application. Applications
should be made between dawn and two hours before
sunset. It has no residual activity or carryover.
• I GNITE is a non-selective herbicide that controls a wide
range of grass and broadleaf weeds, including wooly
cupgrass, velvetleaf, cocklebur, lambsquarters, and
pigweed. All herbicides labeled for use on conventional
corn may also be used for LibertyLink corn.
• Clearly mark those fields which are planted to a
LibertyLink crop to avoid the possibility of a herbicide
application error. Due to various genetic causes, up to a
1%-2% stand loss can result when IGNITE herbicide is
sprayed on a LibertyLink hybrid.
• T he application of IGNITE herbicide to a nonLibertyLink crop will result in serious crop injury and
yield loss. Read and follow label directions carefully.

Herculex® XTRA
Nothing provides more in-plant insect protection than
Herculex XTRA Insect Protection. With Herculex XTRA you get the absolute broadest spectrum of protection.
Herculex XTRA is the only trait available that protects against western bean cutworm and black cutworm.
Herculex XTRA combines Herculex I Insect Protection and Herculex RW Rootworm Protection for powerful
protection above- and below-ground. Its whole-plant protection works all season long and shields your corn unlike
any other trait.
Herculex XTRA hybrids are resistant to IGNITE ® (Liberty ® ) herbicide when applied over the top in accordance with
the IGNITE (Liberty) herbicide label. No herbicide carryover with the IGNITE weed control program, therefore, no
damage to future crops.

Viking Conventional Hybrids
How to Plant and Manage Conventional Corn
You might assume that there is some mystery involved in raising conventional corn. That really isn’t the
case. Corn, whether traited or conventional, requires solid management. There are four basic management
considerations that need to be addressed when raising conventional corn.
1. Field selection
The conventional wisdom states that rotated fields are the ideal choice for conventional corn. However, Casey Staloch
knows many farmers in his area who have placed conventional corn in a corn-on-corn rotation and done very well.
“Good management is key,” Casey adds. “You have to do a good job on the other points on this list, and when you do, you
can grow conventional corn in just about any situation.”
One common-sense suggestion: Although rootworm pressure can often be addressed with insecticides, as we’ll note later,
avoid planting conventional corn in fields where you expect heavy rootworm pressure if you don’t have the means to
manage the pest.
2. Hybrid selection
This is just as critical for conventional corn as it is for any hybrid. Your seed professional will need to know your rotation,
soil type, planting population, yield target, and end use in order to match the correct conventional hybrid to the right field.
Don’t stack the deck. Give your conventional corn a fair comparison by planting some on your good ground. Don’t put it on
your poorest ground and expect it to compete with the stacked products you put on your most productive acres.
3. Herbicide management
With herbicide resistance on the rise and the current push to vary modes of action, most farmers are already using many of
the weed control components they would use with conventional corn. The only significant difference would be the absence
of glyphosate.
Always consult your agronomist or dealer before implementing any weed control program, but here are a couple of
examples of programs that will provide excellent weed control in conventional corn.
•Zidua® pre-emerge, then coming over the top with Impact® and atrazine
•Surpass® pre-emerge, then coming over the top with Laudis® and atrazine
•For a total pre-emerge program, use Corvus® and atrazine (Corvus is currently labeled in IA but not in MN.)
4. Rootworm management
Rootworm control is one of the keys to success with conventional corn hybrids. As we mentioned above, consider field
history when deciding where to place conventional hybrids. But in most cases, excellent rootworm control can be achieved
in conventional corn with the correct insecticide program.
Once again, always consult your agronomist or dealer before implementing an insecticide program. Here are a few options
that have delivered good results against rootworms.
•Aztec® dry granular
•Force®, a liquid that can be injected at planting
•Capture® LFR®, which can be tank-mixed with your liquid fertilizer

Viking Conventional Hybrids
Conventional Corn Hybrids
Unlike most companies, we are increasing the number of conventional hybrids we offer. Why? Because our customers
have asked for more conventional corn choices.
“Does conventional corn yield?” The short answer is: YES! In the absence of insect pressure, a well-adapted
conventional corn hybrid will yield just as much as any trait-stacked hybrid. Don’t believe it? Look at the 2010, 2011,
and 2012 University of Minnesota Varietal Trial Results in the southern locations. Two of the highest-yielding hybrids
were conventional (one of them was Viking 60-01N). In 2011, Viking 60-01N took 1st place overall in the Iowa State
University Northeast District Early-Season Test (out of 50 hybrids, including Dekalb 52-59).
Conventional Corn and “Non-GMO” Contracts
We do not guarantee any of these conventional corn hybrids to be 100% free of GMOs (genetically modified organisms
or, more accurately, corn traits derived from recombinant DNA technology). Furthermore, we cannot guarantee that
grain harvested from Viking conventional hybrids will be marketable as “non-GMO” grain.

Viking PuraMaize® Hybrids
Peace of mind for your non-GMO corn contract.
We are excited to offer our first Viking PuraMaize hybrid for 2014 planting!
Viking 10-07PM is a conventional, non-traited 107-day corn hybrid that
cannot be cross-pollinated by non-PuraMaize corn.
Viking Hybrids has supported the development and testing of this powerful new non-GMO tool for the last 5 years.
Developed through traditional selective breeding, the PuraMaize gene-blocking system prevents cross-fertilization
from neighboring fields by strongly favoring its own pollen. Highly effective in protecting corn from GMO pollen drift,
PuraMaize delivers peace of mind by preserving the non-GMO status of your corn.
PuraMaize has been thoroughly tested over multiple years in dozens of replicated locations. In side-by-side field
tests with GMO corn, PuraMaize virtually eliminates contamination.
For the 2014 planting season, we offer only one PuraMaize Hybrid. It is a high-yielding, consistent hybrid with good
all-around agronomics. We recommend ordering early as our supply is limited.

WSI = Winter Survival Index (Lower number indicates better survival)
FD = Fall Dormancy
DRI = Disease Resistance Index
(Higher number indicates later dormancy, faster regrowth after cutting)
Winter Survival Index (WSI) —A standardized test
that measures the ability of alfalfa varieties to
withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1
(superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have
a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a
guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low
WSIs and good pest and disease resistance.
Fall Dormancy (FD) —The measure of how tall an
alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before
going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower
number goes dormant earlier in the fall.
Resistance
HR = Highly Resistant
R = Resistant
MR = Moderately Resistant
LR = Low Resistance
S = Susceptible
DRI = D
isease Resistance Index
(30 = highest, 6 = lowest)
Forage Quality—Varieties that have a high Relative
Feed Quality (RFQ), such as the WL 363HQ, WL 354HQ,
WL 353LH, Viking 370HD, and Profusion Hybrid have a
wider harvest window.
Disease & Pest Resistance—Poorly drained fields
require alfalfas with better disease resistance
(especially Phytophthora and Aphanomyces). Select
varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a
long, productive stand.

Highest-quality and highest-yielding product vs. bin-run
Meets quality standards of seed company
Professionally handled and rigorously tested
Dramatically reduces splits and foreign matter
Ensures varietal purity
Germination tests to ensure peace of mind
Weed-free
Reliable seed supply in many maturities
Access to the most elite germplasm
Economics of New Seed vs. Bin-Run
• Income lost by not selling as commodity grain (e.g. 1
bushel of bin-run seed multiplied by the price of a
soybean bushel)
• Average loss of approximately 10%-15% cleanout at
harvest for bin-run seed
• Handling and transportation costs for bin-run
(approximately $0.35-$0.75/bushel)
• Bin-run planting rates are generally 15% higher than new
certified seed
• New seed yields an average of 1.8 bushel/acre more
than bin-run (University yield trials range from 1.2 to 5.9
bushels/acre)

past several years he has helped growers across the
U.S. make more money per acre by properly using
biologicals such as Agri-Gro® Foliar Blend and Agri-Gro®
Ultra and micronutrients such as AgriGuardian™ Micro
Mix, AgriGuardian™ Moly, and AgriGuardian™ Zinc.
• Over a million acres were sprayed with Foliar Blend
and Micro Mix in 2011 (in the U.S. alone).
• Over 95% of the farmers who used Foliar Blend or
Micro Mix in 2010 used them again in 2011.
•
A two-year study using Foliar Blend conducted by
scientists at the University of Missouri showed an
average yield increase of 9 bu/acre in soybeans and
17 bu/acre in Roundup Ready® corn.
• Also at the University of Missouri, Micro Mix alone
increased yields by 7.7 bushels on good ground and,
when used with AgriGuardian Moly on a poor soil (soil
tested low in most nutrients including molybdenum),
was able to increase soybean yields by 14.4 bushels,
using less than a pint of these combined products and
no other fertilizers.
• During the 2011 growing season in Barnum, Iowa, a
grower had documented soybean yields in excess of
70 bu/acre over 550 acres using these products when
most soybeans in the area were yielding only in the
50 bu/acre.
•
