Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens November 2014 THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER Libbie Soden, Evergreen Arboretum President State of the Arboretum After a spectacular summer, the fall rains are soaking the gardens and the holiday season is almost here. The Arboretum's hard-working Board of Directors met in October to set goals and plan for 2015 projects and events. Of course we will have the annual Plant Sale and the latest edition of the Gardens of Merit Tour in June. Monthly classes and work parties continue for 2015. AND yes - the first annual Family Fun Event was so much fun we are convening the second edition next July! We set two additional goals for a successful 2015. One is to raise more funds for completion of the South Area Plan and supplement maintenance of the Arboretum gardens. The other is to increase volunteer participation by recruiting individuals, local businesses and community groups to help. Do you belong to a group that does community service? Contact us and we will do our best to match you with a project! The success and condition of the gardens at the Arboretum are dependent on all of us - we all need to ensure the sustainability of the gardens for the next generation. Volunteers are of "tree-mendous" importance in helping us maintain Everett's best kept secret - our Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens! As a volunteer you can learn new skills, meet others who share the common gardening passion and feel good about supporting the work of the Arboretum and the community. Depending on your interest, skills and availability - there is a wide range of opportunities to help. Upcoming events we will need assistance with include the Everett Home and Garden Show in March, our Annual Membership Dinner in March, Everett's Sorticulture event in June, our Annual Arboretum Plant Sale and Raffle in June, our Gardens of Merit tour in June, and our Family Fun Event in July. All of these special yearly events are integral in keeping the Arboretum growing as well as continuing to educate our community on the merits of membership to Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens. Volunteer work parties are scheduled several times a year to help maintain the gardens - so "come get dirty with us" as soon and as much as possible - we need your help! You do not have to be an Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens member to volunteer. If you have questions or are ready to help contact Vicky Reyes through the website at evergreenarboretum.com, email us at [email protected] or call 425-903-4563. The Gardens of Merit Tour is on for June 2015! Garden tour chairwomen Patti Lohse and Linda Woolsey are excited to share news on the planning of the 2015 garden tour. They solicited garden owners over the summer and now have eight beautiful gardens for the tour next June! The project kick-off meeting took place in July and was attended by individuals who had expressed an interest in working on the garden tour. Meeting attendees volunteered to take responsibility for tasks to be done during the fall and winter - such as soliciting sponsors, working with garden owners and developing suitable content for the garden tour brochure. The group viewed pictures of gardens that were being considered for the tour and discussed ways to make the 2015 event better than ever. The Arboretum will keep you informed about what the garden tour team is doing over the winter through the newsletter as well as occasional e-mail messages. If you have an interest in working with the garden tour team - please contact chairwomen Patti or Linda through the "contact us" page at evergreenarboretum.com. In the meantime let's all mark our calendars for a fabulous tour next June! Arboretum Focus: Plants, Plants, and More Plants! Another season comes to the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens, and with it more great plants showing off in all the gardens! As we head into November - even with old man winter lurking around the corner - there is still so much to see. Fall colors are still shining and many specimens are preparing to bloom over the winter. Come by with umbrella in hand and enjoy a stroll through the gardens - you will find much to surprise you! In the Tree Walk, winter time brings stunning bark on a number of the specimens. Note the Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum) exhibiting peeling reddish-brown bark. A beautiful Pacific Fire Vine Maple (Acer circinatum 'Pacific Fire') sits with bright yellow to coral stems for the winter. Diablo Ninebark (Physocarpus opufolius 'Diablo') sports nice peeling bark as well as nice seeds for winter birds. One must see for winter is the Charity Oregon Grape (Mahonia x media 'Charity') - see picture above. This beauty will be blooming most of the winter with bright yellow flowers - a perfect nectar source for hummingbirds passing through the garden. In the Conifer Garden stop and admire all the specimens - winter is the time for the evergreens to make their statement. So many graceful weeping forms like the lower Felling Blue Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodora 'Feeling Blue'). So much soft feathery foliage like Heatherbun Eastern Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Heatherbun'). So many bright foliage colors like Blue Spanish Fir (Abies pinsapo 'Glauca') and Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtuse "Nana Lutea'). The different shades of green. The stiff rigid structure of numerous Pine and Spruce specimens. A great time of year to see the Conifer Garden! In the Native Garden winter it is all about the birds. Lots of berries are popping out Snowberry (Symphiocarpus albus), Evergreen Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), and Salal (Gaultheria shallon) - to keep the birds happy and fed through the winter. Note the special Coast Silk Tassle (Garryia elyptica) along the perimeter fence starting to drop its winter catkins - a very "cool" winter sight! In the Lower Garden lots of plants are of interest this time of year. Numerous Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica) are turning orange-red for the winter as well as showing spikes of nice berries for fall. Look up here and there and see the wonderful strawberry like fruits out on the Korean Dogwoods (Cornus kousa). A nice large Japanese Aralia (Fatsia japonica) is blooming in November with white flowers in large clusters. And there are plenty of dramatic grasses displaying their fall "plumage" while turning fiery colors this month. In the Woodland Garden a couple of perennials are getting ready to shine during winter. Numerous varieties of Christmas Roses (Hellebores cvs.) are preparing for winter through spring bloom. Masses of Bishop's Hat (Epimedium rubrum) will be turning red for the season and then in late winter will be displaying cheerful yellow flowers on stocks. Along the WSU Master Gardener Border lots of perennial goodies and grasses and still going strong. The variety here is simply amazing! Note the two large Variegated Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica 'Variegatia') - shining silver for the winter with striking variegated leaves and lovely buds drooping on branches - just letting us know they can't wait for spring to start blooming once again! Throughout the gardens the evergreen shrubs with variegated foliage really pop with color. On your winter walkabout in the Arboretum look for the beautiful Variegated Eleagnus (Eleagnus pungens 'Maculata') showing off bright yellow/deep green multicolored foliage. Numerous varieties of Euonymus throughout the different gardens are displaying white/green or yellow/green leaf colors. One of the best in the garden is the Variegated Osmanthus (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki') - a super shrub with holly like foliage but with lots of yellows and ambers mixed with green and no berries. As with all the seasons - the winter will not disappoint you if you visit the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens. Hope to see you there!
