THANKSGIVING DAY Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a great dinner. Or, maybe they think it is the start of the Christmas Holiday Season. What is the real meaning behind Thanksgiving?? Catherine Millar writes: and I quote her. “We can trace this historic American Christian Tradition to the year 1623. After the harvest crops were gathered in November 1623, Governor William Bradford of the 1620 Pilgrim Colony, “Plymouth Plantation” in Plymouth, Massachusetts proclaimed: “All ye Pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill...there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings.” This is the origin of our annual Thanksgiving Day Celebration. Congress of the United States proclaimed National Days of Thanksgiving to the Almighty God many times throughout the following years. On November 1st, 1777, by order of Congress, the first National Thanksgiving Proclamation was proclaimed, and signed by Henry Laurens, President of the Continental Congress. The third Thursday of December, 1777 was thus officiaIly set aside. Then again, on January 1st, 1795 our first United States President, George Washington, wrote his famed National Thanksgiving Proclamation, in which he says that it is.... our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and to implore Him to continue....our duty as a people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experienced.” Thursday, the 19th day of February, 1795 was thus 4 THE BERKELEY REPORTER NOVEMBER 2014 set aside by George Washington as a National Day of Thanksgiving. Many years later, on October 3rd, 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, by Act of Congress, an annual National Day of Thanksgiving, “on the last Thursday of November, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.” In this Thanksgiving proclamation, our 16th President says that it is...“announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those Nations are blessed whose God is the Lord...But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, by the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own... It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people.” So, it is that on Thanksgiving Day each year, Americans give thanks to Almighty God for all his Blessings and mercies towards us throughout the year. I hope you enjoyed this story, I did. As for mel I will be spending a blessed Thanksgiving with my family and extended family and loved ones at my home. It is my tradition that we open our Thanksgiving Day Dinner with a prayer, and proceed to go around the table so each and everyone one of us can make their own statement as to why they are thankful. As for mom I’m so grateful for my beautiful family that has grown in many ways with the birth of two new grandchildren recently. I’m grateful and blessed for my friends and their families My heartfelt thank you as always, to my dearest friend Bernadette Whitmeyer for always allowing me to share these wonderful stories and knowledge with all of you along the way. I wish each and every one of you a most Happy Thanksgiving Day. God Bless America and God Bless All of You, Honorable Frances R. Siddons P.S. Acupuncture treatment focuses on opening the nasal passages, boosting the immune system and strengthening the organs and energetic pathways of the body to prevent allergic reactions from recurring. A seasonal allergy is an allergic reaction to something that is typically only present for part of the year. Pollens are the most common cause of seasonal allergies. Spring is traditionally the worst season for allergies because of new growth on trees and weeds. Fall is also rough, due to other blooming plants and leaf mold. Acupuncture can help with acute symptoms of allergies, such as stuffy or runny nose, dry, itchy eyes, post nasal drip, itching throat and cough. Needles are used to stimulate the body’s Oi (life energy). By moving the bodies Oi, congestion in the sinuses and nose can be moved and inflammation and dryness in the eyes can be cleared. Often some relief of these symptoms can be achieved during the first treatment. Acupuncture treatment is not only focused on acute symptoms but also the underlying causes of allergies. In Chinese medical theory, the body is protected by Wei Oi (defensive qi). This protective energy flows at the surface of the body providing resistance to things like cold and flu and allergies. People who have weak Wei Oi are more susceptible to get sick or have allergy symptoms. By needling some points on the body that help support the Wei qi, we can help to prevent symptoms in the future. Chinese Herbs Chinese herbs can also be used to help treat allergies. Chinese medical theory about allergies can be applied in the same way to Chinese herbs. Formulas are made to treat acute symptoms and boost the immune system to prevent future symptoms. Herbal formulas come in tablet form. One of the most appealing advantages to taking herbal formulas is that there are no unwanted side effects. People do not have to worry about drowsiness at work or driving or immune system suppression or over reliance on medication. NOVEMBER 2014 THE BERKELEY REPORTER 7 24 Hours in Town The Home of Judge Wells, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, November 19,1863 The butler knocked on the door of the bedroom. He did not open it until he heard the man’s ‘Enter’. “Good morning, Mr. President. Hope you had a restful night.” Lincoln and his secretary looked up from his writing desk and gave the butler a tired smile. “Yes, I rested well. But I have been struggling with today’s speech.” “Well, Mr. President, just tell the audience how brave the Union army fought and they will be happy.” The President’s frown stopped any further comments. “There were brave men on both sides, Sir! Men gave their lives for what they believed in”, Lincoln replied, “I will not give praise to one side, and castigate the other. I hope to unite our country, not continue this strife”. The outburst was rare for the President. His secretary immediately changed the subject. “Mathew Brady will be there to document your speech. He will need several minutes to set up his picture taking equipment, and the Mayor of Harrisburg would like to talk to you.” “The Mayor of Harrisburg?” questioned Lincoln. “Yes, Mr. President, he wants to tell you in person how he burned the bridge over the Susquehanna, preventing the Confederate cavalry in Camp Hill from entering his town.” “Very well, schedule him for this afternoon. And please remind him that I do not like to be called Abe. If you have nothing else, allow me to return to my speech.” Bowing slightly, the secretary left, ushering the butler out before him and informing the guard of the president’s wishes. Lincoln had been invited by Judge David Wells of Gettysburg to give the concluding remarks for the dedication of the Cemetery on that day, and to stay at his house the night before the event. The cemetery was to honor the Union soldiers that had died in the battle. The main speaker was the nationally known orator Edward Everett, whose speeches usually ran over 2 hours. Everett was known to be so eloquent that no one in the audience ever complained about the length of his speeches. Folklore has Lincoln writing his speech on the back of an envelope. However, that is not so. Most of the speech was hand written on White House stationery. He wanted the speech to be about the day’s event, the deaths it represented, and the struggle of ideals that occurred here. Lincoln finished making changes to his remarks as there was a knock on the door. It was Judge Wells “Mr. President, our carriage is ready for your tour of the battle field.” During Continued on page 9 DRYER FIRE PREVENTION SERVICES DRYER LINT CLEAN-OUT STARTING AT $60.00 Includes dryer clean-out and full inspection of dryer ventilation system EXPIRES 11/30/14 Don ’ tag t put a on SAF price ETY ! He saw the rifle pits, cut and scarred trees, pieces of artillery wagons, and the scraps of blue and grey clothing that were everywhere. The images brought back memories of him as a young infantry captain after the Battle of Stillman’s Run, burying the dead. The Black Hawk war was a long time before, but the memories last forever. Everett’s speech was outstanding. The over 10,000 people who heard him were enthralled. They applauded him enthusiastically on more than one occasions. Once again, he had lived up to his reputation. He really was a moving and rousing orator. Finally, Everett was done, and it was Lincoln’s turn to speak. E.W. Andrew, who was on the platform that day, remarked of Lincoln. “He stepped slowly to the front of the platform. His natural sadness of expression deepened. His eyes cast to the ground.” The Civil War Photographer, Mathew Brady quickly started to set up his cumbersome equipment. Digital photography was still 100 years in the future. Mathew ducked under the camera’s cloak to check his view of the podium. Lincoln’s height was different and Brady had to adjust the angle. He did not like it. It needed another adjustment to the tripod holding the heavy camera in place. He came out from under the cloak and started to adjust the tripod’s legs. Lincoln started. “Four Score and seven years ago our Forefathers brought forth”. Today there isn’t a person over 14 who doesn’t recognize the beginning words of Lincoln’s most famous speech. Judge Wells just wanted a few concluding remarks for the dedication. What Lincoln gave him was one of the most recognized speeches in modern times. In just 272 words, and 3 short minutes he summarized the ideals of a nation. Al Ugarte OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR MEDICARE IS OCTOBER 15TH, TO DECEMBER 7TH, 2014. NOW IS THE TIME TO LEARN MORE. Paonessa, DO, FACOS 2101 Route 34 Suite H Wall, New Jersey 07719 732-282-1500 Inflammatory Bowel Disease Over two million individuals are affected by Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis. These two diseases are commonly known as Inflammatory Bowel disease. IBD can attack both the small and large intestines. The large intestine is composed of the colon and rectum and the small intestine is made up of the jejunum and the ileum. Any area of the intestine can be affected with IBD and the distribution of the disease can vary from patient to patient. Crohn’s Disease Crohn’s Disease is commonly found in patients ages 16-40 but can affect those in other age groups as well. This disease is known to be approximately 20% genetically transferred from siblings, parents and even your own child, who have been diagnosed with some form of IBD. Crohn’s Disease has numerous symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, anal pain, joint pain (arthritis), unexpected weight loss or/and diarrhea. Fever will usually accompany these symptoms. The cause of Crohn’s Disease is still unknown. Several theories have centered on the immunological system, which is the body’s defense system, or possible bacterial causes. Although there is currently no cure, medication can be administered to treat early onsets and/or temporarily relieve pain and symptoms associated with the illness. The most commonly dispensed medications are corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory agents and immune-suppressants. In some cases surgery may be needed if the condition becomes severe or complicated. Not all cases require surgery. It is always best to schedule an appointment with l Services colorectal surgeons who will work in conjunction with your gastroentologist to determine the best treatment for ptions each individual case. This causes inflammation of the lining of the large intestine (colon/or rectum). The onset for developing Ulcerative Colitis occurs during two stages of life: between the age of 15 and 30 and also between the ages of 70 -80. Like Crohn’s Disease, the cause of Ulcerative Colitis is also unknown. The symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis are similar to Crohn’s Disease and include abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, fever and/or rectal bleeding. Some patients may even experience incontinence from the diarrhea. Medications can be administered to control the active disease and keep the patient from requiring hospitalization. The most commonly dispensed medications are antibiotics and antiinflammatory agents. If those medications fail, your physician may prescribe prednisone (steroids); immunomodulators can be used to maintain the disease for a longer period of time. Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are serious diseases and should never be ignored. ads-496B with Coupon Expires 12/31/14 ads-496b FULLY INSURED & LICENSED NJ Contractor #13VH00480700 NOVEMBER 2014 THE BERKELEY REPORTER 11 SALE DOOR 8x7 NJ Cert #13VH01882000 SUBCONTRACTORS Ask NO the Grumpy Gardner Submitted Bernadette S.Service Whitmeyer“Family Fast,By Professional 732-269-9667 • 609-693-80 SQUIRREL ATTACK What can I do to get rid of all the squirrels in my yard? Shafer Jr. Written By Gary Crawford What do you mean you can’t find a job? I have heard so many stories so many times with so many guys or gals who lost what was a very good job to various circumstances, downsizing, and technological replacement, company moving out of the area or for some other reason. Out they go to pound the pavement, looking to acquire another job. Trouble is, there aren’t any jobs out there that will match what was lost. Six figures, benefit plan, retirement, the works So he goes on unemployment insurance, something he paid into for years deducted from every paycheck he received, all the way back to the minimum wage first job he had back in high school. Two years go by and he still hasn’t found that dream job. His unemployment benefits run out and now there will be no income at all. The bills have piled up, credit cards and equity accounts are maxed out, the mortgage company is sending certified letters, utilities are threating to shut things off. It’s time to swallow your pride and go out and take the first job. Any job, a minimum wage paycheck sure beats zero income. This writer lost two jobs over the years due to technological advances. One was a part-time operating a satellite transmitter earth station. After a few years and improvements in technology, the company figured out how to remotely operate the station from their main office clear across the country. They didn’t need him anymore at their facility. The second job lost was a longtime career-as a motion picture projectionist. Our theater was one of the last holdouts to project film. But we knew the end was coming and soon the studio and production companies “went digital”. No more film would be available ever again and if we didn’t upgrade with new digital equipment we would simply have to close down. It wasn’t negotiable. Film was dead. So we up graded to the tune of $70,000 and I lost my job, along with my medical benefits. still work part-time there changing shows and making sure nothing goes wrong, but my paychecks certainly got much thinner. Seeing that my next birthday is the big 60, I simply tell people that I retired from show biz. And what do so many retired guys like me do? We drive school buses and taxis. When the theater job ended I called the number on the side of the taxi that I see all the time. I it took me ten minutes to find a job. I told the co-owner that I had a class A commercial license, drove a school bus during the day, had a clean driving license and asked if they needed a driver? I was called back in about ten minutes, asking me when I could start. See why I don’t have any sympathy for someone who can’t find a job! The money isn’t really bad. I don’t have medical insurance right now so I know I’m taking my chances with health issues. I’m in pretty good health and fairly good shape. Buying into affordable health insurance will come soon, not just yet. I have had all kinds of jobs over the years. I pumped gas on three different occasions; I drove an 18 wheeler, school buses and taxis. I painted houses, I was a car and RV mechanic, I even worked in retail sales, TV and movie production and motion picture exhibition. I will do just about everything that is legal. As a writer and published author, I wish I could write for a living. To be a super-star author making millions from my best sellers. But until that happens, I’ll be driving kids to school and taking fares in a taxi. If I had to, I would flip burgers. I like to cook, so that wouldn’t be a step down for me. So many people would never consider taking such demeaning jobs, but if I had to pay bills and no other income, hand me over an application. If you have lost a job and want to take a few weeks off, go for it. You worked hard, take some time for yourself. But, be realistic - you will need income and soon. If you can’t find that next cushy job, work your way back up again just like you did all those years ago. Stop whining, G.O.Y.A. (Get Off Your Ass) and find a job. What is more damaging to your pride - working a low paying job, or not being able to provide for your family and possibly losing everything? Think about it. Try this - If minimum wage is around $8.00 an hour and you work 40 hours a week, you will gross $320, taking home about $250. Multiply this by four weeks in a month and you will take home $1000. A grand a month will pay some utility bills and get you a few bags of groceries and maybe chip away at some of those debts. Minimum wage doesn’t sound so bad now does it? GOOD LUCK NOVEMBER 2014 THE BERKELEY REPORTER 15 Domestic Abuse, Why Women Stay With Violent Men Submitted by Bernadette S. Whitmeyer Reference material: Sarah Kaplan, The Washington Post Mackenzie Dawson, The New York Post Robin Givins, Time Nicole Beverly, The Huffington Post Jonathan Cohn, The New Republic Leslie Morgan Steiner, The Washington Post Why did she stay? That’s the question asked last month when a video emerged of Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice, knocking out his then fiancee, Janay, with a vicious punch in an Atlantic City Casino elevator. How could any self-respecting woman stand by a man who had knocked her unconscious, people wonder and then she married him/there are an avalanche of answers to that judgmental question that came via twitter, as thousands of domestic abuse victims explained their own reasons for remaining with a violent partner, posted under the hashtag #WhyIStayed. One tweet explained, “My girls needed a father”. Another said “he told me no one will ever love me, like he does”. A third said, “How was I to know this was not normal, I was hit plenty at home”. It’s easy for an outsider to imagine abused women tearing off their wedding ring and building new lives as family and friends say, “you go girl”, but inside the complex reality of most battered women, leaving is no simple matter. In fact, it takes most battered women seven tries for a victim to leave an abusive relationship - and that’s if they leave at all. Robin Givens, stated as a victim you feel such inner toil and confusion. When I was first knocked unconscious by my ex-husband, boxer, Mike Tyson, I insisted I would never go back. For three days I stayed strong. But then you start taking his calls. Eventually, you agree to meet up, and then you have a big giant man crying like a baby on your lap, describing how he was abused when he was WERNSING PLUMBING & HEATING WERNSING PLUMBIN & HEATING • 25% SENIOR DISCOUNT • Boilers Hot Water Heaters Fully Insured & Bonded Family Owned & Operated Since 1975 • 25% SENIOR Berkeley ReporterDISCOUNT OnLine ads-2812 (704) 746-4135 Bob Wernsing | Lic # 101020 16 THE BERKELEY REPORTER younger and then of course promising it will never happen again until it does. Some of the victims stay because they have become financially dependent. One woman I knew stayed, she was eight weeks pregnant with her second child when her husband hit her, and she had no income, no bank account, and no car, nowhere to take her child. Over time the slapping and punching came to feel like no big deal, a necessary compromise for my kids’ sake. It took five more years of abuse before she finally worked up the courage to grab her kids and go. In the short term, leaving can sometimes make things worse. After a terrible beating left Nicole Beverly with cracked ribs, I did exactly what people said to do. I moved out. I contacted a domestic violence resource center and filed a restraining order. But still I wasn’t safe. Enraged that he had lost control of her, her husband began stalking her and would call me and say he would “kill me”. When I had him arrested multiple times, judges would give him a lecture and let him go. In the real world, leaving an abusive partner statistically raises the likelihood of being murdered by the partner 75 percent. Today, my husband is in prison for aggravated stalking, but he has told his fellow inmates that he plans to kill me as soon as he gets out. I left him, but I am still terrified. Statistics show that “tens of millions” of women are abused in this country. It’s time for real change. Sentences for domestic abuse must be toughened and consistently enforced. Shelters for battered women and their children need greater funding: the people who run them say they must often turn away victims due to lack of space. In the end #WhylStayed is probably a good answer to a bad question. It puts the focus and thus the blame on the victims, not the abusers. It took a woman four years to leave a violent abusive husband, a wealthy Wall Street Trader. Some women become confused with pity and love. While others think they can change their spouse from their inner demons. So if Janay Rice stays with Ray, don’t judge her or keep asking why? Instead ask her why there are so many women like her - and why there are so many men who think they have the right to beat up their wives or girlfriends? Whitmeyer The dancers of English National Ballet brought an impressive blend of grace, passion and perfection to the stage in their performance of Le Corsaire (The Pirate), demonstrating breathtaking body control and enhancing the piece’s fairytale aesthetic with brilliant costumes adorned with thousands of Swarovski crystals. Shimmering under the theater lights, these colorful embellishments ensured that everyone of the dancer’s spectacular moves dazzled the audience. The costume designer Bob Ringwood, whose dramatic work can already be seen in Hollywood movies as Troy and Batman, for this production of the classic Russian ballet, he knew he had to do something beyond amazing. So he turned to Swarovski for help. Ringwood created sensual garments with exotic ornamentation and intricate patterns that immediately delighted the Artistic Director. Swarovski’s beautiful crystals bring the sets and costumes to life and illuminate the stage. The costumes were embellished with painstaking attention to detail, 230,000 Swarovski crystals adorn the ballet dancers outfits. Sparkle and shine formed exotic patterns and some stopped counting the crystals as they formed specific designs. Each crystal on the costume was hand done, taking a very long time to complete each outfit. The ballet opened in London, and the premier was outstanding. He received a standing ovation. Comment: Swarovski for many years was only associated with their beautiful figurines, but for today, the company has been focusing on women and their rise to the business world, and so they began designing jewelry to add sparkle and shine to any business suit or just a simple pair of jeans and a white shirt. Located at the Tinton Falls Outlet, is a great boutique with hundreds of low cost jewelry. By Ruth M. Deane, Attorney at Law A Power of Attorney (POA) is one of the most important tools that a person can incorporate into his or her personal planning. It is a written document in which you (the “Principal”), appoint someone else (referred to as “the Agent,” or “attorney-in-fact”), to handle your affairs if you become unable to do so. It can and should provide the Principal with peace of mind, knowing that in an emergency, someone that he or she trusts will have the ability and authority to act on his or her behalf. Most people recognize this, but many are justifiably concerned about executing a POA because they do not (yet) want to give up control of their assets and/or finances. For many, these concerns may be eliminated by a DURABLE SPRINGING POWER OF ATTORNEY, once they understand WHAT “POWER” IS GIVEN, AND WHEN. There are many types of POA’s, each with a specific use. For example, a general POA, may give the agent broad and sweeping powers over the Principal’s medical and financial decisions. A healthcare POA only grants the Agent the ability to make medical decisions for the Principal. Whatever type of POA is executed, the document should be very clear about what power or authority is given, and under what circumstances it may be exercised. Regardless of the type of POA, the authority of the Agent is limited by the powers specifically granted in the POA. (Among the issues typically addressed in a POA are: property (real and personal); stocks, bonds, annuities, banking and other financial transactions; insurance; business operation and/or transactions; claims and litigation; taxes; etc). A “Durable Power of Attorney” is effective upon execution and remains in effect throughout the Principal’s lifetime, unless the Principal cancels or revokes it. In order for the POA to remain in effect even if the Principal becomes incapacitated, it must contain language specifically stating this. In order for the POA to be revocable, it must contain specific language allowing the Principal to revoke it upon (written) notice and/or by execution of another POA. Conventional POA’s typically become effective immediately upon execution. However, for those who are justifiably concerned about giving the power to handle their affairs to another when they are still capable of handling their own affairs, a POA can be drafted such that it becomes effective only upon the Principal’s disability. This is frequently referred to as a “springing” POA, but it is also known as a “conditional” POA. It SPRINGS into effect, only if and/or when the Principal is incapacitated. 26 THE BERKELEY REPORTER NOVEMBER 2014 The POA should clearly define the term(s), “disability,” or “incapicity,” and state the event(s) or condition(s) which will trigger the grant of authority for the Agent to act on the Principal’s behalf. It is not uncommon for the POA to contain language that requires a certification by at least one doctor stating that the Principal is incapacitated, whether because of mental or physical disability. The powers granted in a Springing POA are effective ONLY IF/ WHEN THE PRINCIPAL BECOMES DISABLED OR INCOMPETENT. The POA is an extremely important and complex document. It is critical that your wishes and needs are openly discussed with your attorney to ensure that the authorization for your Agent to act on your behalf is only given at the time and under circumstances with which you, the Principal, are most comfortable. Whitmeyer Before you get all excited about college for you daughter or son, or even a grandchild, don't send them to an Ivy League college. Yes, elite universities like Harvard, Princeton and Yale manufacture young people who are smart and talented and driven, engineered to attain status and wealth. But they also produce graduates with little intellectual curiosity and virtually no sense of self. Admission standards are now so extreme that to get into an Ivy League college, kids have to compile records of astonishing achievement. That leaves them "with a violent aversion to risk". Rather than use their college years to explore books, ideas, works of art and thought, these super-students are obsessed with getting straight A's in classes that will prepare them for getting to the top. Nearly one-third of Ivy League graduates go into finance or consulting. But the primary goal of higher education is - or should be learning how to think. That's why you are better off sending your kids/grandkids to a state university or a small liberal arts college, where students tend to be more truly diverse in background and interests and far less entitled and competitive. But where is the evidence to back this up? To make such a sweeping dismissal of tens of thousands of students, a trained academic should surely offer more than personal observations and anecdotes. Besides it not Yale's fault that our society has "radically devalued" the qualities that a wellrounded education was once meant to impart. But that doesn't mean that an Ivy League education isn't extremely valuable especially for a student whose family isn't already a part of the elite. Guardian Lions Submitted By Bernadette S. Whitmeyer Mutually dependent the feminine and masculine principles of Yin and Yang could not exist without each other. The same can be said for the Asian guardian lions. They always come as a pair, with the west facing female holding her paw over a small cub to symbolize growth and nurture and the east facing male resting on an embroidered ball, representing unity and power. Together the guardian lions offer protection as they keep watch over buildings. This traditional symbolism and togetherness served as the source of inspiration for two *Guardian Lion* figurines in stylish Crystal Silver Shade. The honorable creatures sit on a top of decoratively engraved bases as they attend to their mythical, responsible task of guarding temples, official buildings, bridges and tombs. The custom of using guardian lions may its way from India to China alongside the rise of Buddhism in the third century. Given that there weren't any actual lions in China at the time, the silhouettes were initially modeled on dogs, which is why people still tend to refer to these sculptures as Foo dogs or guardian dogs. Anyone traveling through Asia will be able to admire diverse interpretations of guardian lions in all manner of sizes and materials. And whenever you find one, you can be sure that a glorious shrine or other famous landmark will not be too far away. Dentures and traditional implants most common. The most common restoration is a full upper or lower denture, or both. But because full dentures are sometimes difficult to wear many people choose to have two or more dental implants placed in each jaw. Special attachments (commonly called “locators”) are placed on the implants and inside the dentures, allowing the dentures to snap into the implants. These “snap” assemblies help keep the dentures in place during speaking and chewing, giving the patient more confidence. For some patients it is necessary to connect the dental implants together for increased strength and to prevent excessive force on the individual implants. Traditionally, the implants are placed in the jaws in parallel fashion and connected by a custom fabricated bar. The denture is made with a slot to fit over the bar. This type of restoration is called “bar-over denture” restoration. Traditionally, patients desiring “fixed” teeth attached to implants that are not removable had a number of dental implants arranged in parallel fashion in the areas where teeth used to be. The multiple implants would then be restored with each implant replacing one missing tooth. This is a nice way to replace teeth but can be extremely expensive. The new “all on four” brings more comfortable options. The “all on four” protocol is the newest concept in implant dentistry and allows a patient to have a fixed (non removable) teeth inserted immediately on four implants. For patients who are already wearing full dentures, the “all on four” protocol allows patients to transition from wearing a removable full denture to having their existing denture modified and connected to implants at the time the dental implants are placed in the jaws. Then, after a healing period of approximately six months, the patient will have a final restoration made and inserted. Patients who are going to have all teeth extracted are candidates for the “all on four” treatment. Their dentist makes a full denture before the teeth are extracted. Then in one visit with the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, all teeth are extracted and the dental implants are placed. Then the denture is modified and attached to the implants. After the healing process of about six months, a new restoration is made and inserted. This way the patient is never without teeth. NOVEMBER 2014 THE BERKELEY REPORTER 41 42 THE BERKELEY REPORTER NOVEMBER 2014 Wasted Food Submitted By Robert J. Shafer Jr. Written by Gary Crawford Few things bother me more than wasted food. This is such a wasteful society these days; people just throwaway what they don’t use. Save it for later? Not a chance. Just toss it; we can get more when we need it. Although I didn’t experience the Great depression, my parents, grandparents and other relatives certainly did. So many times I heard stories of how bad things were back then. Food was often at a premium. As in, nothing to eat. None of us today seem to be able to understand that, but it was a cold hard fact of life. I see so much waste, kids can’t-or won’t eat a whole Happy meal and what’s left goes into the trash. Walk around any restaurant and see what’s left on plates. SHAMEFUL Growing up, the closest thing to wasted food was the crust off slices of bread. Little kids don’t eat crust. But older kids and grown-ups do. And if they don’t, the crust gets tossed outside to feed the birds. Nothing wasted. In the military mess hall, there is a sign, “take all that you want, but eat all that you take”. In my own house there is no waste it is not tolerated. The saying after a big meal, that someone over filled their plate” my eyes were bigger than my stomach”, well that just doesn’t happen. I always remember the Great Depression, and I watch just how I fill my plate. Sell your car for cash in any condition. Get cash for your car, truck, van or SUV. Licensed, and insured.
