Please do not enter or park in Lori Place between these times. Carnival Day is a special day for all the children and because of the nature of the day, children may wear casual clothes to school on Friday. I would like to once again thank the members of the Carnival planning committee. They have spent hundreds of hours in the planning and organisation of this event. Please support them this Friday, ask if any stall holders need assistance and generally offer to help out at a stall or with the pack-up at the end of the carnival. All we can wish for now is good weather and a day filled with laughter and lots of fun! Review Day As a government school we have a school review every four years. On Wednesday 29 October the Mount View Primary School Review was held. The reviewer, Ms Julie Chandler, led the review panel that consisted of: Mr Mark Dean, President of Council, two principal colleagues, Ms Louise Pearce and Ms Liz Bar, Mount View leadership team members as well as representatives from staff members and the Parents’ Association. The day’s review was extremely productive and the feedback from all stakeholders was overwhelmingly positive. A school review report will be developed by the reviewer then sent to the school. This in turn will provide us with key information to build our next Strategic Action Plan. Thank you to all those involved in this rewarding and collaborative process. ISSE Malaysian Delegation - Assembly The Malaysian Delegation from Kuala Lumpur will arrive this Sunday. The children will be with us for 3 weeks. Please join us on Monday 17 November for a very special welcome assembly at 2:30pm and again on Monday 24 November when the delegation presents its cultural performance to us. I would like to thank the host families and staff members for all their preparation of the ISSE host program. From the Assistant Principal – Alison Rees - Curriculum Celebrating Student Achievement Maths Olympiad Results 2014 Congratulations to the 126 Year 4, 5 and 6 students who represented Mount View in the Maths Olympiad competition this year. At Mount View our Maths Olympiad teams comprise of highly able students from Year 4 to Year 6. For the Year 4 and 5 students, competing in those earlier years gives them the opportunity to extend and develop their maths skills, as well as becoming familiar with the format of the competition. This year we had some exceptional Year 4 students who we would like to acknowledge and congratulate on their achievement. Each of these students was the highest performing Year 4 student in their team. Team B - Jeremy P. (In the top 10%) Team C - Anders L. (In the top 25%) Team D - Joshua C. All of these students participated in the six available competitions: Computer Skills, Science, Writing, Spelling, English and Mathematics and received a High Distinction or Distinction for each of the competitions. Special Event – Cardboard Challenge Day On Monday November 3 our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students took part in Mount View’s second Cardboard Challenge Day – and loved it!! Our students joined millions of children in seventy countries who were all involved in this initiative over several weeks. It was a day full of imagination, creativity, initiative, collaboration, innovation and inspiration and our students gained a great deal from this experience. Thank you to everyone who joined in on the event and either helped in classrooms or collected reusable items. Here’s some of the creativity that was shown on the day: 4 13 November 2014 Parent Event An Invitation to our Parent Helper Morning Tea No school can function successfully without the support and enthusiasm of its parent community. The help that parents have given to us in so many different ways throughout this year has been very much appreciated by students and teachers alike and has enhanced the learning and activities that we’ve been able to offer. In order to say, “Thank You” for everything that parents have done and in recognition of the support that’s been given to classes and the students of Mount View PS during the 2014 school year, parent helpers are cordially invited to a special Parent Helpers’ Morning Tea. A special invitation from the teachers will be sent home early next week. Bike Education consists of: BIKE ED LESSONS: Four weeks of inquiry based practical and theoretical learning with students exploring bicycle riding techniques, road rules and group riding strategies. This includes at school bike riding during PE lessons and out of school riding during designated Bike Ed times: Tuesday 18 November 9:00am – 10:40am Tuesday 25 November 9:00am – 10:40am Tuesday 2 December No Bike Ed Tuesday 9 December 9:00am – 10:40am Wednesday 19 November 1:50pm – 3:30pm Wednesday 26 November 1:50pm – 3:30pm Wednesday 3 December No Bike Ed Wednesday 10 December 1:50pm – 3:30pm Friday 21 November 9:00am – 10:40am Friday 28 November 9:00am – 10:40am Friday 5 December 9:00am – 10:40am BIKE ED EVENT DAY: A group ride and BBQ lunch at Jells Park on Friday 12 December, departing MVPS at 10:00am and returning at 3:00pm. Groups will be heading out on bike paths to Vermont, Jells Park, Nortons Park and Eastlink Wantirna. Students and parents are asked to organise their bike and helmet now! All students must have (or have access to) their own roadworthy bike for Bike Ed. This includes having working brakes, safe pumped up tyres and free spinning wheels that are not buckled or bowed. EVERY STUDENT NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR OWN BIKE. THEREFORE, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT PARENTS PROVIDE THEIR CHILD WITH A BIKE LOCK. An ideal Year 4 student’s bike, depending on their height and experience, may look something like this: Youth Geared Bike Child Geared Bike BMX There are plenty of opportunities for members of the school community to assist with our rides. Please email [email protected] with your available days, dates and times. Students are encouraged to begin practising their riding now! 7 13 November 2014 Jonah, Annabel, Sharon, Harriet, Glenn, Aareni, Rikhil and Leon. Future Stars Hooptime Reginal Final- The team played brilliantly, winning 4 out of 5 matches and making the final. Unfortunately they didn't go on to win the final but a terrific day was had by all, even getting to meet two Melbourne United players. On Friday 24 October our Mount View girls’ volleyball team competed in the Monash-Waverley Division championships in our gym. There were over 7 schools who attended this event. We only had to play two schools, Amsleigh Park and St Justin’s. We won against both schools resulting in 2 sets to 0. This now qualifies us to compete at EMR volleyball championships at Dandenong Stadium on Wednesday 19 November. The girls are now training hard in preparation for their next event. Good luck, girls! 8 13 November 2014 Chess Champions Congratulations to the boys’ chess team who won the state championship last Friday in a tight competition at the Canterbury Chess Club. In a closely fought competition the boys ended the day on 30.5 points and were followed by Waverley Christian College, Deepdene, Wesley, Balwyn North and many more. The boys in the team are Luis Chan, Leon Chen, Alex Fan, Tejas Datar and Bowen Lai. This means that the school will be sending both the boys’ and the girls’ teams to Adelaide in December for the national championships. Many thanks to Julie Christie for accompanying and supporting the team. November National Nude Food Days The Green Team is again encouraging Mount View PS students to participate in National Nude Food Days each Wednesday in November. Nude food simply means a rubbish free lunch: food packed in reusable or recyclable packaging, or no packaging at all. What a great excuse to eat fruit! Don’t forget to name containers in which food is brought to school. Reducing rubbish helps our environment! If your child is unable to bring nude food on Wednesdays in November they will be asked to take all their food packaging home. An Important Message from the Health Centre In order for the Health Centre to provide the best care for your child in 2015, we require current information regarding your child’s medical conditions. You can access all the medical forms on the school website. Please fill in the necessary forms and drop them off to the office or Health Centre. Please be aware that the Department of Education requires us to have updated Asthma action plans and Anaphylactic action plans each year.
