Sammanfattning
Furniture made of paper – time to get used to the thought,
because now Ikea will launch storage furniture made
out of recycled paper. The new material, called M-board,
is a revolutionary Swedish invention developed at SWT
Paper AB in Varberg in cooperation with Ikea.
Möbler av papper – vänj dig snabbt vid tanken, för nu
lanserar Ikea förvaringsmöbler gjorda av returpapper.
Det nya materialet, som kallas M-board, är en revolutionerande svensk uppfinning, som tagits fram på SWT Paper
AB i Varberg i samarbete med Ikea.
M-board will be used in the same way and has similar
qualities as conventional chipboard or wood-based building boards. M-board also has a number of significant
advantages, particularly in terms of environmental and
sustainable impact.
M-board används på samma sätt och har liknande kvaliteter som vanliga spån- eller träfiberbaserade byggskivor.
M-board har dessutom ett antal betydande fördelar, framför
allt vad gäller miljöpåverkan.

The project
Projektet
SWT Paper AB was founded in 1999 and specializes in
lamination and sheeting of paper and paperboard. The
company supplies the market with material ranging from
industrial packaging to luxury boxes and display cartons,
and has also become well known for their successful product development emphasis.
SWT Paper AB grundades 1999 och är specialiserat på
laminering och arkning av papper och kartong. Företaget förser marknaden med allt från industriemballage till
lyxförpackningar och skyltkartonger, och har också gjort
sig känt för produktutveckling.
The EU project WPF - Waste Paper to Furniture, started
December 7th, 2012 and is the result of a creative collaboration between SWT Paper AB and Ikea. The purpose of the
project, which has been funded with approximately 45
percent by the EU’s Eco Innovation program, has been to
introduce storage furniture made from recycled paper to
the Ikea market. The project ended September 6th, 2015.
Using waste paper as raw material is both innovative and
more environmentally friendly compared to the production
of, for example, chipboard or particleboard for furniture.
The project goal was to produce furniture that has the
same strength properties and holds equal quality as similar products from traditional materials in light weight
constructions, but with the reduced material consumption, energy consumption and greenhouse gas carbon dioxide emission. The finished products will be 100 percent
recyclable. This means that a worn piece of furniture can
become raw material for a new one.
The innovations in the WPF project are:
• A completely new type of material (M-board) which is
made from nearly 100 percent recycled paper fiber. The
material can be manufactured in a large scale production.
•The production integrates several processes into one.
M-board has the same or very similar characteristics as
wood-based furniture boards when it comes to durabi lity and flexibility.
EU-projektet WPF – Waste Paper to Furniture (pappersavfall till möbler), startade 7 december 2012 och är resultatet av ett kreativt samarbete mellan SWT Paper AB och
Ikea. Syftet med projektet, som till ungefär 45 procent har
bekostats av EU:s Eco innovation-fond, har varit att introducera förvaringsmöbler gjorda av återvunnet papper, på
Ikeas marknad. Projektet avslutades 6 september 2015.
Att använda returpapper som råmaterial är både innovativt och mer miljövänligt, jämfört med tillverkning av till
exempel spån- eller träfiberskivor för möbler.
Projektets målsättning var att tillverka förvaringsmöbler
som är lika stadiga och håller lika hög kvalitet som liknande produkter av traditionella material, men att åtgången av energi och material ska minskas och utsläppen
av växthusgasen koldioxid reduceras. De färdiga produkterna ska vara 100 procent återvinningsbara. Det innebär
att en uttjänt möbel kan bli råvara till en ny.
Innovationerna i WPF-projektet är:
• En helt ny typ av material (M-board) som är gjord av näst
intill 100 procent återvunnen pappersfiber. Materialet
går att tillverka i storskalig produktion.
• I produktionen integreras flera processer till en enda.
M-board har samma, eller mycket lika, egenskaper som
träfiberbaserade möbelskivor när det gäller hållbarhet
och flexibilitet.

WPF project has since December 7th 2012 been part of the daily
activities of SWT Paper AB. The project is divided into six work
packages with different areas of focus.

The M-board machine and its processes were designed by
representatives of Ikea and SWT Paper AB together with
machine developer Restatic in Gothenburg. After initial
development in Gothenburg the various parts of the
machine were tested and then moved to the SWT Paper
AB’s headquarters in Varberg and were put together piece
by piece. After a year, the new production line was completed and more test runs and trimming followed. The
heart of the machine, the part where all the paper components are joined, has been rebuilt and tuned several
times to reach the desired quality in the boards.
Maskinen som används för tillverkning av M-board ritades
av representanter för Ikea och SWT Paper AB tillsammans
med maskinutvecklaren Restatic i Göteborg. Efter att de
olika maskindelarna testkörts flyttades de till SWT Paper
AB:s lokaler i Varberg och sattes ihop del för del. Efter ett
år var den nya produktionslinan färdig och en tid av testkörningar och intrimning följde. Själva hjärtat i maskinen,
den del där de olika papperskomponenterna sammanfogas,
har fått byggas om och finjusterats flera gånger för att
den eftersträvade kvaliteten i skivorna ska uppnås.
M-board is a paper board with a lightweight construction.
The sides of the board are covered with laminated paper,
which folds over and seals the lengthwise sides. During
the manufacturing process the paper is cut to be folded,
glued and pressed to become viable construction. The
long sides have hard paper style supports for stability.
These allow one to drill and screw in certain areas of the
board. M-board is equally strong and can withstand fire
and moisture as well as other furniture or building panels
in particleboard if covered with eligible surface treatment.
The production process is unique because it is short and
efficient. It also reduces waste to almost zero – this is
recycled, as the paper it is. Even the dust that is released
during cutting and milling is removed up and brought back
into production.
M-board can be produced in different sizes. The thickness
can today be produced between 15 and 22 mm, the width
ranges between 200 and 870 mm, the lengthwise minimum is 300 mm. The thickest type of M-board, which is
22 mm, weighs 2.8 kilograms per square meter. Thanks
to the variation options, M-board has the potential to be
used for much more than furniture.
M-board är en pappersskiva med lättviktskonstruktion.
Den har sidor av laminerat papper, som viks över och försluter långsidorna. I tillverkningsprocessen skärs pappret
till, veckas, limmas och pressas för att bli bärkraftigt. I
långsidorna finns hårda pappersstavar som ger stabilitet.
I dessa kan man också borra och skruva. M-board är lika
stadig och kan stå emot eld och fukt lika bra som andra
byggskivor, som har rätt behandlat ytskikt.
Tillverkningsprocessen är unik eftersom den är så kort
och effektiv. Dessutom minskar spillet till nära noll – det
återvinns, som det papper det är. Till och med det damm
som frigörs vid tillskärningen sugs upp och går tillbaka in
i produktionen.
M-board kan produceras i olika storlekar. Tjockleken kan
vara mellan 15 och 22 mm, bredden mellan 200 och
870 mm och längden har ett minimum på 300 mm. Den
tjockaste varianten av M-board, 22 mm, väger 2,8 kg per
kvadratmeter. Variationsmöjligheten gör att M-board i
framtiden har en potential att användas till mycket mer
än möbler.

The Product

September 2015 concludes the WPF project and production
activities starts. Ikea is SWT Paper AB’s first hand customer
and it is Ikea that holds the patents M-board. The first
product will be a storage unit, a cube-shaped shelf section
that can be easily combined with several others to create
a personalized decor. The initial cube, designed by Knut and
Marianne Hagberg, will be named Brunnsvik and presented
at Ikea in Älmhult, Småland.
I september 2015 avslutas WPF som projekt och produktionsverksamhet startar. Ikea är SWT Paper AB:s första
kund och det är Ikea som har patent på 5 M-board. Den
första produkten blir en förvaringsmöbel, en kubformad
hyllsektion som lätt kan kombineras med flera för att
skapa en personlig inredning. Kuben, som är designad av
Knut och Marianne Hagberg, får namnet Brunnsvik och
kommer att presenteras på Ikea i Älmhult, Småland.
In production the M-board is covered with so-called wood
fiber based furniture foil which gives the surface the desired
color and texture. The possibility of variation in M-board
is equal to corresponding chipboard or fiberboard. At the
launch of the cube the surface will feel and look like
unbleached kraft paper. The aim is to establish the new
material. Customers need to get used to the thought that
paper furniture can actually be stable and durable, even if
it weighs less than other similar furniture.
I samband med tillverkningen kläs M-board med så kallad
möbelfolie, som ger ytan önskad färg och struktur. Variationsmöjligheten är lika stor för M-board som för motsvarande spån- eller träfiberskivor. Vid lanseringen av kuben
kommer ytan att kännas och se ut som oblekt papper. Syftet
är att etablera det nya materialet. Kunderna behöver vänja
sig vid tanken att en pappersmöbel faktiskt kan vara stadig
och hållbar, även om den väger mindre än andra, liknande
möbler.
The Brunnsvik cube is the first part of the series Nikkeby,
the collection is planned to be launched 2017.
Kuben Brunnsvik blir första delen i Nikkebyserien, som
lanseras i sin helhet under 2017.
Thanks to the efficient manufacturing process and the cheap
raw materials, the cost of furniture made of M-board becomes competitive. Customer interest is expected to be huge,
not only in Europe, but gradually throughout the world.
Tack vare den effektiva tillverkningsprocessen och den
billiga råvaran beräknas kostnaden för möbler tillverkade
av M-board bli konkurrenskraftig. Kundintresset förväntas
bli stort, inte bara i Europa, utan efter hand i hela världen.

M-board is a completely new type of material. It is made from
98 percent recycled paper and is 100 percent recyclable.
During April of 2015 a life cycle analysis*, LCA was carried
out by the ÅF Group on behalf of SWT Paper AB. The analysis
compares the M-boards environmental impact with corresponding particleboard.

78% There are several reasons why products made by M-board
can be more recourse efficient.
The production integrates several processes into one,
which means that the production line is compact and
only about 30 meters long – compared to 300 meters
for the production of conventional lightweight furniture
board constructions. The investment cost is reduced to
one-third since less space is needed, and manufacturing
time is much faster. Compared to other similar products,
the M-board also uses significantly less adhesives, resulting in lower costs and contributes to reduced energy
consumption.

Det finns flera anledningar till att produkter tillverkade av
M-board kan bli så mycket resurssnålare.
Tillverkningen integrerar flera processer i en, vilket gör att
produktionslinan blir kompakt och endast cirka 30 meter
lång – att jämföra med 300 meter för tillverkning av vanliga
lättviktskonstruktioner. Investeringskostnaden minskar till
en tredjedel, mindre lokaler behövs och tillverkningen blir
snabbare. Jämfört med andra, liknande produkter används
också betydligt mindre lim, vilket ger lägre kostnader och
bidrar till minskad energiåtgång.

The EU started the Eco-innovation initiative in 2008, with the
goal of bridging the gap between research and the market. Economic supports by grants are given to innovative projects that
both have clear sustainability and commercial objectives. In this
way, projects should contribute to the EU’s environmental targets, and also to economic growth.

The Future
Framtiden
Essentially all industrialized countries in the world already
have the most important prerequisite for the production
of M-boards: An operational system of collection and recycling of waste paper. The potential market for furniture
made of recycled paper is not only European, it is global.
I stort sett alla industrialiserade länder i världen har
redan den viktigaste förutsättningen för tillverkning av
M-board: Ett fungerande system för insamling och återvinning av papper. Den potentiella marknaden för möbler
gjorda av returpapper är därför inte endast europeisk, den
är global.
A competitive price combined with low environmental
impact makes the M-board products potentially revolutionizing to the global furniture market. This, to generate
business by investing in sustainable development, has
been the core of the ECO Innovation funded - WPF project.
The perspective of sustainability continues once the project goes into production. In order to minimize the transportation of finished products the production should be
close to both raw material and Ikea’s largest markets.
Therefore, SWT Paper AB is planning to open additional
facilities in Europe in the coming years.
Ikea has the patent on M-board. However, SWT Paper AB
is investigating the possibility of using M-board in exhibition and display materials, load carriers (pallets) in the
Ikea warehouse and department stores, as well as fillings
for boxes and packaging, where Ikea until now been using
styrofoam.
In the future it is conceivable that the M-board could be
used in ceilings, walls, interior doors and shop displays.
The potential is enormous. It is almost only the imagination that sets the limit.
Ett konkurrenskraftigt pris i kombination med låg miljöpåverkan gör att M-boardprodukter har potential att revolutionera den globala möbelmarknaden. Detta, att skapa
affärer genom att satsa på hållbar utveckling, har varit
själva kärnan i WPF-projektet.
Hållbarhetsperspektivet fortsätter när projektet övergår till
produktionsverksamhet. För att minimera transporterna
av färdiga produkter bör tillverkningen ske nära både råmaterialet och Ikeas största marknader. Därför planerar
SWT Paper AB att öppna ytterligare anläggningar i Europa
de närmaste åren.
Ikea har patent på M-board. Redan nu undersöker SWT
Paper AB möjligheten att använda M-board till utställningsmaterial, lastbärare (lastpallar) i Ikeas lager och varuhus, samt fyllnadsmaterial i lådor och förpackningar, där
Ikea hittills använt frigolit.
I framtiden kan man tänka sig att M-board används i till
exempel innertak, väggar, innerdörrar och i butiksinredning. Potentialen är enorm. Det är nästan bara fantasin
som sätter gränsen.
