LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear guitar-lovers,
The year is almost at an end, and yet there are still more exciting
guitar events to come!
Of particular note are the Australian Guitar Duo, a truly
international ensemble (based in NY and Spain), that are making
a big splash internationally. Their Perth trip is part of an
extensive Australian tour. I’m also pleased to note that they will
give a masterclass for the guitar society (interested parties
please contact me on [email protected]). Details of the
concert and masterclass are given on the pages to follow.
The visit of international solo artist and composer extraordinaire
Johannes Möller was truly memorable. Möller passionate
compositions and virtuosic playing made a deep impression.
I also wanted to remind members that as part of the transition
to calendar year reporting, memberships have been extended by
6 months (to the end of this year). We will soon be asking for
renewals and will hold our next AGM early in 2015.
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming AGD concert and
masterclass!
Kind regards
Dr Jonathan Paget

AUSTRALIAN GUITAR DUO: NATIONAL TOUR OF AUSTRALIA,
NOVEMBER 2014
“The Australian Guitar Duo has got it all: perfect synchronization, beautiful phrasing and tone,
and charismatic good looks.” - Classical Guitar Magazine
This November the Australian Guitar Duo, described by the Canberra Times as an “excellent
guitar duo,” will perform a national tour across 5 states and the ACT, in 15 concert performances.
Recognised as one of the most dynamic and exciting classical guitar ensembles, the Australian Guitar
Duo has given performances throughout the world, including at the New York Guitar Duo Festival in
New York City, Barcelona Guitar Festival in Spain, Festival de Musique Classique in France, Strings139 Festival in China, Music by the Sea in Canada, as well as every state and territory in mainland
Australia.
Performing a mixture of Australian compositions and standard works from the guitar duo
repertoire, the Australian Guitar Duo consists of Rupert Boyd and Jacob Cordover, both respected
soloists in their own right. They met and formed as a duo in the year 2000 while studying at the
Australian National University School of Music, where they were under the tutelage of renowned
Australian guitarist Timothy Kain.
In what will be their only Australian performances in 2014, the Australian Guitar Duo’s
November tour will consist of a wide range of works for two guitars, from the Baroque to
Contemporary, and will feature compositions and arrangements by Silvius Leopold Weiss, Mauro
Giuliani, Maurice Ravel, Ross Edwards, Pixinguinha and Joaquin Rodrigo.
In 2012 the Australian Guitar Duo released its debut CD Songs from the Forest, which was
met with such critical acclaim as “wonderfully entertaining” by Classical Guitar Magazine (UK),
“superb” by Limelight Magazine, and “a fine recording sure to please the most demanding listeners”
by Minor 7th. Soundboard, the quarterly publication of Guitar Foundation of America, praised the
3
recording by describing the duo as “technical masters who also possess beautiful tone, and a
wonderfully refined collective musical sense.”
A truly international ensemble, Mr. Boyd and Mr. Cordover live in New York City and
Barcelona respectively, but meet on a regular basis to perform concerts throughout the world. The
Australian Guitar Duo last toured Australia in 2012, and has since given performances in China, the
Philippines, New York, Spain, aboard Queen Mary 2, and most recently Vancouver Island in Canada.
Speaking of the upcoming tour of Australia, Mr. Boyd says “I am very excited for the Australian
Guitar Duo to tour Australia with a brand-new programme. We’re looking forward to returning to
some favourite towns and performance venues, and to visit places we have not yet performed. We
have a wonderful programme of music that spans over three hundred years, ranging from a
beautiful new arrangement of a baroque suite by Weiss, through to a lively and exciting set of works
by the Brazilian composer Pixinguinha. This repertoire will form the basis of a new CD we plan to
record in 2015, and is sure to please a wide audience, from the connoisseur of classical music to
anyone who loves music or the guitar.”

JOHANNES MÖLLER CONCERT, 24 AUGUST 2014, AT WAAPA MUSIC
AUDITORIUM (A REVIEW)
Now that this year’s WA Classical Guitar Festival is complete, it is worth considering how fortunate
we were to have had the dedicated help of Johannes Moller.
Even before Johannes undertook his duties as adjudicator at the festival throughout the
weekend, he had supervised Master Classes and, on the Friday evening of 24 August at 7:30 pm, he
gave a stunning guitar performance at the WAAPA Music Auditorium. For those who did not attend
his concert, I encourage you to get CDs (details available on his website) as he is truly a remarkable
performer and composer for the guitar.
The concert commenced with “Un Sueno en la Floresta” by Barrios; a beautiful virtuosic
piece that Johannes played with a delicate and precise touch. He gave a hauntingly brilliant
performance of this difficult composition.
This was followed by three Moller compositions interspersed with “Asturias – Leyenda” By
Albeniz. Of the three Moller items, “From Her Source to the Sea” and “Song to the Mother”, showed
the influence of Indian Sitar music and gave a mystical ambience to the music. His “Selection from
24 Preludes” was also fascinating with contrasting textures.
We were privileged to hear such an outstanding performance. I recommend you check his
website, http://johannesmoller.com/release/guitar-recital/.

THE 26TH CLASSICAL GUITAR ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL
This annual event was held at Carine High School on Aug 23rd and 24th
Living up to its reputation as the largest guitar ensemble festive in the southern hemisphere it drew
over sixty ensembles from schools and universities throughout WA. Also this year we welcomed an
ensemble from Malaysia, the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
Jointly organised by the WA Classical guitar society and the School of Instrumental Music it
again was a great success. Johannes Moller the Guest adjudicator was very impressed with the
organisation and the standard of playing.

GUITAR SOCIETY/SIM FORUM: A REVIEW BY CAROLINE BINSTED
What a wonderful Sunday afternoon it was! The rustic charm of the School of Instrumental
Music (SIM) hall played host to the latest guitar forum.
To my knowledge this is the first time that SIM and CGSWA have collaborated on
such an event-and it proved to be very successful. Naughty me had never attended a guitar
society forum before so this was completely new territory for me, but I was pleasantly
surprised with the quality of performances and the sheer number of players too!
Nine students from around the Perth Metro area (one as far south as Port Kennedy
had participated), and a CGSWA member from the country had even driven in to be an
observer. I was amazed at the talent presented and the spectrum of ages covered from
Primary School right through to year 12, University levels and even a Master of Music
Studies student performed. The event lasted two hours and we also enjoyed socialising over
afternoon tea about half way through.
I would like to thank Jonathan Paget, Deb Banks (SIM Guitar Coordinator) and Bruce
Herriman (SIM Principal) for their assistance in putting this event together.
Personally I would like to see future collaborations like this. In particular year 11 and
12 students and university students about to sit their exams and recitals can use this as a
safe and encouraging environment to ‘air’ their pieces to an audience that will truly
appreciate their efforts and abilities. Or those sitting private exams like AMEB can take
advantage....or those learning new pieces...or simply coming along and playing for the love
of it!
