Happy Birthday, Marines!
Worldwide each year on November 10, the Marine
Corps celebrates its birthday with a special cake cutting ceremony.
This year the Marines turned 239! Mr. Jewell, seventh grade teacher and a Marine himself, organized the

Gerald M. Soukal and Samual J. Dacany of St. Jane de Chantel Boy Scout Troop
671 were recognized for achieving the Rank of Eagle Scout on Nov 2nd.
Gerald Soukal started Scouting as a Tiger Cub Scout in Pack 4466 later joining
Boy Scout Troop 671. After attending a week at Owasippe Scout Reservation in
Twin Lakes, MI. The following year, at the age of 13, he applied to be a CIT
(Counselor in Training). After only one year as a CIT, Gerald (Jerry) was awarded
CIT Staff Person of the Year by his peers and co-workers. He worked at camp and
in the following years as a nature counselor, life guard, member of the ranch staff
caring for up to 14 horses.
Jerry was also a Merit Badge Counselor for fishing, environmental science,
mammal studies, geology, swimming, lifesaving and horsemanship. Jerry is also a
member of the Order of the Arrow and has earned 35 merit badges, 13 of which
were specifically required to reach the rank of eagle.
Jerry is also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Jane, and has won the Action Religious
Award as a student at St. Lawrence High School, where he was a member of the
National Honors Society and the Student Council graduating with honors and is
currently attending St. Xavier University and has been admitted to St. Xavier's
School of Nursing. Jerry's Eagle Project engaged his passion for animals, with the
help of his Troop and friends they collected three vehicles full of pet food and much
needed supplies for the Animal Welfare League.
Samual J. Decanay started Scouting as a member of St. Jane's Cub Scout Pack,
earning every achievement including multiple gold and silver Arrow Points,Compass
Points and every Webelos achievement pin, as well as earning the Arrow of Light
Award. After joining Boy Scout Troop 671 he was found to be a good leader and
was elected over the years, as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Senior
Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow Representative.
Later after joining the Order of the Arrow, Sam was elected to the position of
Vice Chief of Camp Promotions and two consecutive terms as Chief of the Gete
Manitu Chapter. After attending an Astronomy Merit Badge Clinic, Sam noticed
that many scouts failed to finish the merit badge due to a poorly worded requirement. In conjuction with the Merit Badge Counselor who was head of the Chicago
Astronomical Society, the Astronomy Merit Badge was rewritten allowing scouts to
complete the Merit Badge. Later earning 36 merit badges, with 13 badges being required, and Sam is also a avid camper in all kinds of weather.
Sam's Eagle Project benefited the Night Ministry, a shelter for "at-risk" and home
less teens. Sam collected over $3.000 worth of toiletries. He and his fellow scouts
assembled over 120 hygiene kits which will help ease the lives of Chicago's homeless teens.
23rd Ward Alderman Mike Zalewski was the Special Guest Speaker and delivered a proclamation from the City of Chicago to each of the Eagle Scouts.

Senior Ride Free Permits
Expire November 30
The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA)
is reminding riders that
the expiration date of November 30 on Ride Free
permits, used by qualifying seniors, is quickly approaching. If riders have
not yet applied for the
State of Illinois Benefit
Access Program (BAP)
they are encouraged to do
so now in advance of the
rapidly approaching expiration date.
In June, the RTA extended the expiration date
of Ride Free permits for
seniors to November 30.
The extension allowed
more time for riders to
apply for the BAP program as it could take between four and six weeks
for eligibility to be approved.
“We extended the renewal process to ensure
every qualified rider is
able to ride the transit system,” said Leanne Redden, Executive Director
of the RTA. “We hope the
extension has given the
riders the time they needed to apply through the
BAP program to ensure
there are no interruptions
in their service. If they
have not applied yet, they
should do so immediately,
as time is running out.”
Approximately 24,000
seniors have yet to renew
their permits. The RTA is
required by law to issue
these permits to individuals who have been approved by the BAP program.
If a senior has recently
applied for or has received a new Senior Ride Free
permit, no additional action will be required at
this time.
There are two ways to
apply for eligibility through
BAP: From any computer
or mobile device, visit the
Illinois Department on Aging Benefit Access Program website at www.
illinois.gov/aging & click
on the “Benefit Access”
tab.
The State only allows
applications online, not in
writing or over the telephone
Applicants must submit documentation online,
which may require scanning documents to a computer to submit them online.
If assistance is needed
filling out the online form
to confirm eligibility for
the Illinois Benefit Access
Program, an applicant may
do one of the following:
Chicago residents can
visit any of the City of
Chicago’s six Regional
Senior Centers Monday
through Friday, between
8:30 AM and 3:30PM.
Riders can call 311 to find
their closest Regional
Senior Center or call the
Illinois Department on
Aging at 800-252-8966 to
find a conveniently located center where staff can
assist in filling the application.

Bridgeport Catholic
Academy Highlights
The Bridgeport Catholic Academy Veteran Mass at
Nativity of Our Lord Church was a celebration of our
liturgy and a tribute to our veterans.
Each of the 2nd graders carried a flag representing
a branch of our armed forces and a 6th grader carried
the US Flag (pictured above).
11th Ward Alderman Balcer spoke to the congregation, the BCA 2nd and 6th graders were the color guard
and readers. A poem, “American Veteran”, by William
E. Lightfoot, was presented by Carmen Gonzales and
Brooklyn Metke.
The entire Bridgeport Catholic Academy student
body and the Nativity of Our Lord parishioners are
proud and grateful to those who served.
