From Face to Surface A fragmentation study Professor Håkan Schunnesson www.gruvochmetallutvinning.se www.siostrim.se From Face to Surface is a joint project between Luleå University of Technology, LKAB and Boliden Mineral AB The project have two test sites/case studies; Boliden’s Aitik mine and LKAB’s Malmberget mine Project team (LTU); • • • • • • Håkan Schunnesson, project leader Daniel Johansson, senior researcher Anna Gustafson, senior researcher Jenny Greberg, senior researcher Ali Beyglou, PhD student, Aitik Kristoffer Berglund, PhD student , LKAB Malmberget Project aim: • Increase productivity • Decrease disturbances • Decrease energy consumption By Optimize fragmentation Fragmentation has a significant impact on all mine production systems Fragmentation has a significant impact on all mine production systems Boulder 1m Fragmentation has a significant impact on all mine production systems Fine fractions Hadjigeorgiou 2005 Fragmentation has a significant impact on all mine production systems What is the best fragmentation for mine production? Fragmentation has a significant impact on all mine production systems What is the best fragmentation for mineral processing? OK, but how can we know that we improved or optimized fragmentation and the effects of fragmentation? Measure absolute fragmentation • Image analysis has been done, but is difficult and debated. • Varying external conditions (light, snow, etc.). • Do not answer the questions how it influence production and how shall it be optimized. Use indicators related to the production effects of fragmentation – Performance Indicators KPI’s Some initial results Some results: optimize blasting Adjust initiation direction and blast pattern to domains of rock mass structure Lislerud, A. 1990 Geological Structures by Photogrammetry 1. 2. 3. 4. Construct a 3D surface from 2 stereoscopic images Scale and Geo-Reference Identify structures Find domains statistically Domains and initial tests Beyglou et al. 2015 Some possible indicators • Swell factor • Bucket weight • Buckets per truck Buckets per truck Some results Blast 3 Blast 4 Blast 2 Blast 5 Blast 1 Blast 6 Potential gain: 3‐4% more weight/bucket 13‐14% less bucket/truck Swell factor Bucket weight Blast 6 Blast 5 Blast 3 Blast 4 Blast 2 Bucket weight Blast 1 Face‐to‐Surface: • Results from first field test will be presented at Fragblast 2015 • Field tests continues for bench 255, 270, 285 in the same area • • More results, also from tests in the Malmberget mine, shortly on www.facetosurface.se Thank you
