Last Saturday friends and families of Old Collegians gathered
for the Annual Mass for deceased Old Collegians. This
remarkable institution has been running since 1962 with Father
Gerard Dowling as principal Celebrant. This year he was joined
by Old Collegian priests Fathers John Prest, Brian Kelty, Frank
Moloney, Ray Scanlon and Joe Giacobbe.
The First reading from the Mass was from Ecclesiasticus:
Here is a list of generous men, whose good works have not
been forgotten. In their descendants there remains a rich
inheritance born of them. Their descendants stand by their
covenants, and, thanks to them so do their children’s children.
Their offspring will last forever; their glory will not fade. Their
bodies have been buried in peace, and their name lives on for all generations. The
people will proclaim their wisdom; the assembly will celebrate their praises.
Certainly this is an appropriate piece of scripture to remember our deceased Old
Collegians and the legacy that they have left for us.
On Tuesday this week the College gathered for Remembrance Day. I had the honour of providing this reflection:
Today is known as Remembrance Day. It is also known as Armistice Day.
At 11am on November 11 1918 hostilities ceased ending the First World War. This day was commemorated
amongst the allied nations as ‘Armistice Day’ the following year. The day was initially designated to
commemorate those members of the armed forces who were killed during that great conflict, referred to at that
time as “the war to end all wars”. Sadly it wasn’t.
The term ‘Remembrance Day’ came to be used as a replacement for ‘Armistice Day’ in 1945 to include
remembrance of the dead of the Second World War. So now in 2014 what do we remember?
We remember the bravery and the sacrifice of those who fought and died in the First World War. We remember
the 13 and a half million human beings killed, captured, wounded or missing: 8 million on the allied side, five and
a half million on the German and Austrian/Hungarian side.
We remember the 9 million soldiers and 7 million civilians who died in that conflict; many million in the trenches of
Northern France Belgium and Luxembourg. In places the Western front trench line was in exactly the same place
in 1918 as it had been in 1914.
The impact of both World Wars on Australia was profound with over 61,000 deaths in First World War and almost
40,000 in the Second World War.
The conflict between countries in each of the two world wars had a start and a finish, had an aggressor and a
defender. In every conflict since it has been the same - aggressors and defenders.
In each world war, while a nation surrendered, there was ultimately no victor. And in each conflict since, it has
been the same.
Australian soldiers have fought and died defending the British empire and our own country, from the Sudan in
1885 through to Afghanistan in recent years. Over 100,000 young Australians in our armed forces have made the
ultimate sacrifice.
They were brave and heroic and their work was necessary but ultimately in such conflict we all lose something of
ourselves and our shared humanity.
Every country and every individual dead or alive and their families and their communities lost. They lost people
and things they loved along with something of their own humanity.
Looking at the graves of Anzac cove in Turkey, Tyne Cot in Belgium, or Bomanna in Papua New Guinea, the pride
and gratitude one feels is overwhelmed by a sense of sadness and futility: why did they need to die?
Remembering such sacrifice should teach us something and that is the ultimate futility of conflict between
human beings.
Remembrance Day should be about us recalling the sacrifices of others to remind us to commit to peace and
doing all that we can to ensure conflict never arises. Committing to do all we can to ensure there is no conflict
between countries, between races, between religions and between individuals.
On a plaque inside the Shrine of Remembrance in St Kilda Rd are inscribed the words “Greater love hath no
man” taken from St John’s Gospel verse: “ Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friends”
At exactly 11am today, the sun will shine through an aperture in the ceiling of the Shrine and illuminate just one
word on this plaque - ”Love”
Loving one another is the real message of Remembrance Day and today we pledge to do all that we can to
ensure no conflict in our families, in our schools, in our cities, in our country and in our world.

Year 12 2015 Head Start Program
VCE Unit 3 subjects will officially start on Monday November 24 and conclude on
Wednesday December 3. Attendance is compulsory during this time and a timetable of
classes will be available prior to this date.
Year 12 2015 Information Night
The Year 12, 2015 Information Night for all parents and Year 12 students will be held on
Tuesday November 25, commencing at 7.30pm in the College Auditorium.
Year 10 Examinations
Semester two exams for all Year 10 students will be held from:
Wednesday November 19 through to Tuesday November 25.
The timetable for the Year 10 exams will be available from the Year 10 notice board and
a copy has already been e-mailed to your son. Most Year 10 Exams will be held in the
Gym and will commence with 15 minutes reading time. Please note carefully the dates
and times of each exam, as misreading the exam timetable is not accepted as an
excuse for missing an exam.
All students must attend their scheduled exams in their full school uniform. There are no
scheduled classes for Year 10 students during these exams so students are expected at
school only for their timetabled exams.
If there are any difficulties or clashes please see Ms Krouskos or Mr Tollit immediately.
Year 11 2015 Head Start Program
VCE Unit 1 subjects will officially start on Wednesday November 26 and conclude on Wednesday December 3.
Attendance is compulsory during this time and a timetable of classes will be available prior to this date.

Year 7 Orientation Day
The 2014 Year 7 Orientation day will take place on Friday, 28 November. There will be no classes for all 2013 Year 7
boys on this day to enable us to conduct the orientation program in the Year 7 area. There will be classes as
normal for our current Year 8 and 9 students.
Year 8 ILeAP Presentation Day
All parents of Year 8 students are welcome to attend our annual ILeAP presentation day on Thursday November
20. Year 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D work will be available from 9.00am – 10.30am. Year 8E, 8F, 8G, 8H and 8J work will be
available from 11.30am – 12.30pm. This is a great opportunity to come along and see the great work that our
Year 8 boys have been doing with their individual projects.

Discere ILP Night
Year 7 Discere students hosted their ILP (Individual Learning Project) Night on the 29th
October in O’Brien Hall. The boys showcased projects that they had been working on
throughout semester 2. The students chose their own topics and were encouraged to
get their families involved in the projects at home. They also made online visual diaries
of their progress and final presentations. The standard of the projects was nothing but
exceptional. The boys catered the event, spending almost four hours preparing a twocourse meal for a 100 strong crowd of boys, their families and staff. The boys’ hard work
was clear in their projects and the meal shared by the boys’ families was a testament
to their skills in the kitchen.

The first prize winner in all year levels received a $500 bursary along with $200 JB Hi-Fi voucher, second prize was a
$200 JB Hi-Fi voucher while the third prize winner was the recipient of a $100 JB Hi-Fi voucher. Their efforts will
officially be recognised at the awards nights for each year level to be held later this year.
Vinnies' Christmas Appeal
The St. Vincent de Paul Society operates their Soup Van in the Footscray area 365 days a year. They provide food
forhomeless teenagers and adults and for the many families who live in boarding-houses in the area. Every year
they have an annual Christmas party for their ‘clients’ where over 700 people are given a three course traditional
Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. Everyone who comes gets a present. Last year the Vinnies, because of the
generosity of the St. Bernard’s community, was able to give every child and teenager an extra present. This is
often the only present these kids will receive at Christmas time.
This year looks like there will be even more people coming. I am asking for your help to make this Christmas a
happier time for the Vinnies’ clients. Could you please consider donating a present this Christmas? Anything that
you would be happy to receive yourself would be greatly appreciated.
The Boys’ Homerooms have been given the responsibility for providing a present for:

Gallipoli and Western Front tour 2016
After the success of our tour in 2013 and to coincide with centenary commemorations of Australia's involvement
on the Western Front, we are excited to offer students currently in years 7 to 10 the opportunity to travel to Turkey,
Belgium and France in September 2016 to visit many of the significant sites of World War One.
An information night will be held on Wednesday 12th November at 7:30pm in the College boardroom.

AFL Umpiring Academy
The AFL umpiring academy will run again in 2015. The academy will take place at the College after school, once

Twisted Broadway
“The Songs You Love…Only A Little Bit Twisted…”
St. Bernard’s College, in collaboration with St. Columba’s College presents
“Twisted Broadway”, a new musical initiative in 2014.
Modelled after successful runs in Melbourne, The West End and OffBroadway NYC, ‘Twisted Broadway’ is a unique concept that enables male
singers to sing famous musical songs traditionally made famous by women,
and vice versa. (Think “Edelweiss” sung by a female, or “Don’t Rain on My
Parade” performed by a man!)
The cast of 22 students have worked tirelessly to bring you Twisted songs
from favourite musicals such as ‘Les Miserables’, ‘The Sound of Music’ and
‘Grease ’as well as new musicals such as ‘Wicked’, ‘The Lion King’ and
‘Once’ in a fast-paced performance that will have you singing along –
regardless of your gender!
It’s a fun, vibrant family night out and a celebration you do not want to miss!

Music News
Plans for music activity is well underway for 2015. Parents with students
involved in the music program are advised of two very important activities in semester 1:
Music Camp from February 21 – 23 and Music Tour to the ACT to compete at the Australian National Eisteddfod May
21 – 23. While those representing St Bernard's in Canberra has been established, it is hoped that our music camp
next year can involve a broader cross-section of student musicians that normally are not catered for at such an
event. It is proposed that an intensive guitarist workshop be incorporated for instance. We encourage all
instrumentalists to take part where possible.
The Year 7 Concert for year 7E,F,G and J will be held on Thursday November 27 at 7:30pm. This concert material is
already taking shape, with all homerooms involved making great gains in the past two weeks. A reminder that the
SBC Friends of Music will sell tickets for this concert at the door - $5 per individual or $15 per family of 2 adults and
unlimited children. Instrumental Music Lessons: A reminder to all parents with students involved in on-going private music lessons that
cancellation of private music lessons must be via written confirmation by a parent with 1 full term's notice. Late
notification may be accepted 4 weeks prior to the end of any given term. In this instance, any student wishing to
cease instrumental lessons at the end of this year must provide the required written advice to the Music
Department Office by Friday November 7 2014. This notification is best submitted via the on-line cancellation form
at http://sbcmusicdepartment.weebly.com/lesson-cancellation.htm . Students wishing to continue with
instrumental lessons next year are automatically re-enrolled for 2015.

After School English Help
Every Tuesday from 3:00pm – 4:00pm English staff are available to offer help to both Strand and Clairvaux students
with English tasks.

The year 1955, saw the introduction of the first Matriculation class now
Year 12 at the College. My fellow students did not have to travel to
other distant colleges to further their education. The only recollection
by most of the students was the “voluntary” planting of shrubs on the
creek’s banks at West Essendon.

This was an era of stability in relation to society and educational reform,
which was reflected in the happiness loyalty and discipline within the
school. Life was carefree with the only concerns being who could be
first to the handball court, would it rain on sports day, and were those
Latin roots learnt well enough to escape that hard-hitting penalty?

Ladies Auxiliary AGM
The AGM for the Ladies Auxiliary will be held Wednesday 3rd of December in the College
boardroom at 9.30am.
The meeting will consist of an overview of the functions held by the Ladies Auxiliary, Tony
Paatsch will be present for the election of 2015 office bearers which will be followed by a
festive morning tea.
We are always looking for new members to join. If you have been thinking about joining,
we would love to see you there.
It is a great way to meet new friends and also assist in the running of wonderful community events like
Grandparents Day, morning teas following special assemblies or the Mothers of Old Boys Lunch.

What’s your view on bus services in Moonee
Valley?
Take part in a community survey about bus services in
Moonee Valley so that Council can understand what
you like about the service and what you want to
change.
Whilst Council doesn’t manage the bus network, we
do have the opportunity to advocate to the bus
companies and the State Government to ask them to
provide a service that meets the needs of our
community.
As young people are one of the key user-groups of
buses, we are keen to ensure that the opinions of
school-goers and parents are captured as part of this
survey.
We’ll present the survey results to Public Transport
Victoria so that they are fully aware of the views and
needs of Moonee Valley’s community.
