Newsletter editor’s report
Read on for reports and lots and lots of photos from the Sandra Trott Poles & Jump Clinic, and the Ann Evans Memorial Hack
Show. Both were really great days, and it was so good to see so many people make the effort to attend the final Ann Evans
Memorial Show. But first, a couple of important notices:
1) There is only one more MARC event this year ….. The MARC Christmas Party & Awards Night on Saturday 6th December
at the Susan River Homestead on the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road.
Please mark this date on your Calendar and join everyone for a fabulous evening!
N.B.: You need to pre-pay to MARC account 06 4421 00906677 (please identify names with deposit).
Confirmation of numbers and payment must be completed prior to 3rd December.
Cost $35 per person – Smorgasbord (marinaded meats, salads, vegetables, garlic bread + deserts).
Place: The alfresco dining area and adjacent bar at the Susan River Homestead.
Time: 6.30pm until late.
Theme: 1920’s / Gangsters and Dolls! It is lots of fun to dress to the theme (although you don’t have to).
Put your thinking caps on – long beads, feather boas, head bands, long gloves, long cigarette holders, fans, parasols, hats,
braces, violin cases?!
If anyone is interested in staying overnight or using resort facilities, contact Susan River Homestead directly.
Phone: 07 4121 6846 Email: [email protected]
Web: www.susanriver.com
2) Some members have served on the MARC committee for several years, but are unable to continue because of personal
circumstances. All positions will be vacated and open for nominations and election at the AGM in early 2015.
MARC meetings are usually quick and efficient, and the meetings are friendly social occasions.
We are a lucky club where everyone gets along well together, but we need new committee members and new input!
Please consider all the positions (see page 1) and talk to committee members about what is involved for each role.
3) Entries for the MARC Photo Competition close at midnight Sunday 30th November! Email your entries to me ASAP!
Wishing you all happy times with your horses,
Pam Thurlow – Newsletter Editor

25th October - Ruth White Coaching Clinic
Thanks to Leandra for organising these clinics, and for offering to have the last one at her place because there was
so much on at the showgrounds. Her new arena was lovely to ride on!

Bryony Ross & Donny (Soul Hunter) working nicely.
26th 0ctober – Rally “Flatwork & small jumps” with Sandra Trott in the Southern Arena.
This was a fabulous day and everyone enjoyed it so much that we are hoping we will do more like it next year.
Most of us (the adults and their horses anyway!) had very little experience doing poles or jumps. Sandra had
obviously put a lot of thought into the different exercises which were of equal value to both Dressage and Jumping.
The emphasis was on improved control of line and pace, and the horses learning to use their bodies with better
expression – have a look at the knee and hock bend, and collected canter in some of the photos below.
The exercises started with simply walking and then trotting over poles on the ground, while maintaing straightness and rhythm.
L to R: Natalie Duffy, Madison Dunning on Reggie, Julie Fattore on Banjo, and Lynne Larkin on Buddy.
Then the poles were raised slightly…. Wow! Look at that knee and hock bend!!
L to R: Kaysahn Berthelsen & Fergus Park Devocean, Lynne Larkin & Buddy, Zoe McManus on Julie Donovan’s Wizz.
This was an exercise that I had never tried before – trotting and then cantering over poles around a corner, which really required
good control of line and pace – I thought I would fail miserably, but with a couple of tries we improved a lot!
L to R: Casey Duffy, Petrea Bates on Roulsie made everything look easy, while Saffi and I got better with practice!
3
Then some riders did the same with the rails raised slightly – Julie Berthelsen & Leroy show excellent form.
Lucy Laksham and Julie Fattore on Monty also show good line and form, while Saffi & I concentrate on staying straight and
maintaining form while cantering through a line of 3 tiny jumps.
I like this photo – Jenny Birch, Sandra Trott and I in deep discussion,
but Saffi and Rock find something much more interesting!
Many thanks to Sandra Trott for running such a good day. Thankyou to Maryborough Pony Club for lending their
equipment, and Thankyou to those who helped set up and put away. Congratulations and Thankyou to Zoe
McManus who successfully applied to EQ Sport Development for assistance in funding this event. Thanks also to
Zoe McManus and Sue Thurlow for these photos.

The fun wasn’t just out in the arena – spectators watching Sandra Trott’s lessons give cheek to the photographer Sue Thurlow.
L to R: Zoe McManus, Julie Donovan, Petrea Bates, Sue Weston, Pam Thurlow and Jenny Birch.
1st November Rally “Presentation”.
Many Thanks to Petrea Bates, Julie Donovan, Zoe McManus and Julie Fattore who gave up their own preparation
time to teach us how to present horses for showing. Although I’ve competed for many years, it was the first time
that I actually sewed in plaits and I learned an easier way to attach a false tail with help from Julie Fattore. Thanks!
Eleven members paid to attend the Presentation Rally, and Zoe McManus was the lucky winner of the Show Rug
Set kindly donated by Aussi Wide Horse Supplies.
1st November Ann Evans Memorial Hack Show. (Full results will be up on the MARC website soon.)
This really was an excellent finish to our competition year.
A big Thankyou to the many people who helped to make this day such a success:
 Judges Kristian Dymond and Felicity Reinke.
 Judith from PICNICIN who donated prizes for the Best Presented Junior and Senior Riders.
 Ausma Bird from AB Browbands who donated prizes for the Champions.
 Cheynee Wedrat for donating her hand-made beads and accessories for Reserve Champions.
 Carol Diamond, Peta Coles, Cheynee Wedrat and Sally Whalan for pencilling.
 Aussi Wide Horse Supplies for setting up a trade stand.
 Petrea Bates, Julie Donovan and Zoe McManus for organising the day.
 Everyone who attended. It was so good to see so many – some who had travelled quite a distance.
Although it was hot, it actually wasn’t too unpleasant wearing formal dress, and everyone looked fantastic.
There were some big classes, with some quality horses.
Thanks to John Whalan & Sue Thurlow for the photos - I will let their photos tell the story.
(My apologies if I have made any errors with the names.)

A few thoughts….
- Always keep your words soft and sweet …. just in case you have to eat them.
- Drive carefully... It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker.
- If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
- If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
- It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
- Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.
- When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
- Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
- Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.
