Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44 (ESV) Trinity Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church In America Order of Worship — Sunday, November 16, 2014 Listening devices are available for the hearing impaired. Please speak with a greeter or visit the sound booth upstairs for a listening device. Songs of Gathering and Preparation The people of God always sang as they ascended the hill in Jerusalem up to the temple to worship (see Psalms 120-134). We, as well, prepare our hearts, minds, and bodies for worship by singing about the God we serve. All Things New Words by Andrew Peterson, Music by Andrew Peterson, Andy Gullahorn, and Ben Shive ©2008 Jakedog Music (adm. By Centricity Music Publishing)/Junkbox Music/St. Jerome Music/ASCAP Used by permission, CCLI# 1693489 Come broken and weary, come battered and bruised My Jesus makes all things new, all things new Come lost and abandoned, come blown by the wind He’ll bring you back home again, home again Rise up, O you sleeper, awake, the light of the dawn is upon you Rise up, O you sleeper, awake, He makes all things new, all things new Come frozen with shame, come burning with guilt My Jesus, He loves you still, He loves you still The world was good, the world is fallen, the world will be redeemed The world was good, the world is fallen, the world will be redeemed So hold on to the promise The stories are true that Jesus makes all things new Call to Worship We read God’s Word, the Bible, together. It reveals to us who God is and what He expects of us. 1 Peter 2:9 (ESV) you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 9 But Prayer of Adoration and Confession — John Tucker We pray together praising God for who He really is (Adoration) and admitting our inability to live up to what He expects of us (Confession). Song of Repentance We sing a song that reflects our need for the mercy and grace brought to us at the coming of Jesus Christ. There is a Fountain Text: William Cowper, music: traditional American melody, PD There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins; And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains. Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains; And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day; And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away. Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away; And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away. Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power Till all the ransomed Church of God be saved, to sin no more: Be saved, to sin no more, be saved, to sin no more; Till all the ransomed Church of God be saved, to sin no more. E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die: And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die; Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die. When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave, Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save: I’ll sing Thy power to save, I’ll sing Thy power to save; Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save. Assurance of Pardon We again read God’s Word together and are reminded that mercy and grace are freely given to all who have faith in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 4:12-16 (ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 12 Praise and Celebration Our response to God’s free grace is celebratory worship. We express our praise to God for who he is and what he has done for us. In Christ Alone By Stuart Townsend and Keith Getty ©2001 Kingsway’s Thankyou Music, Admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing used by permission, CCLI# 1693489 In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine- bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand! Wonderful, Merciful Savior By Dawn Rodgers and Eric Wyse ©1989, Word Music, Inc./Dayspring Music, Inc admin. by Word Music Group, Inc. used by permission CCLI# 1693489 Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend; Who would’ve thought that a lamb could rescue the souls of men? Oh, You rescue the souls of men. Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace; You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost the way; Oh, we’ve hopelessly lost the way. You are the one that we praise; You are the one we adore; You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for, Oh, our hearts always hunger for. Almighty, Infinite, Father, faithfully loving Your own; Here in our weakness You find us falling before Your throne; Oh, we’re falling before Your throne. Jesus, full of grace and truth; Jesus, we will worship You; Jesus, one and only Son; We have seen Your glory. (echo) We have seen Your glory. (echo) You are the Lamb who gives us life; We have seen Your glory. Born of God, we testify; We have seen Your glory. Son of God and Son of man; We have seen Your glory. All creation in Your hand; We have seen Your glory. Confession of Faith As an expression of our faith in Jesus Christ in solidarity with his people, we declare the substance of what we believe. From Exodus 20:1-2, 7-11: Leader: And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. Congregation: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession — John Tucker We again express in prayer our gratitude to God for what he has done and ask him to continue to act for our good and the good of others in our community & world. (Children, Infants –-Kindergarten, are dismissed for Kid’s Worship.) Proclamation of God’s Word — Tim Rice, Lead Pastor & Director of Church Planting A small portion of God’s Word is explained to us and applied to our lives and circumstances. Worship Through Giving We respond to the good news of God’s mercy and grace for us in Jesus by giving generously to the work of this church and the kingdom of God. Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness Words by Nikolaus von Zinzendorf, 1759 Music by Gene Palm ©2005, used by permission Jesus, thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress ’Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed With joy shall I lift up my head Bold shall I stand in thy great day Who against me a charge shall lay? Fully absolved through these I am From sin and fear, from guilt and shame Jesus, the endless praise to thee Whose boundless mercy hath for me For me a full atonement made An everlasting ransom paid O let the dead now hear thy voice Now bid thy banished ones rejoice Their beauty this, their glorious dress Jesus, thy blood and righteousness Song of Response We respond to the good news of God’s mercy and grace by singing again of his goodness and greatness. Used by permission, CCLI# 1693489 The radiance of the Father before the dawn of time You spoke and all creation came to be The molecules and planets reveal your great design And every one was made so we could see, so we could see You are the glorious Christ, the greatest of all delights Your power is unequaled, Your love beyond all heights No greater sacrifice than when you laid down your life We join the song of angels who praise you day and night Glorious Christ You left the air of heaven to breathe the dust of earth And dwell among the outcast and the poor You came to be forsaken and died to take our curse So you could be our joy forevermore, forevermore You’re seated now in heaven, enthroned at God’s right hand You’ve shattered death and freed us from our fears And though we cannot see you you’re coming back again And all will be made right when you appear And all will be made right when you appear Benediction Because the hand of God’s wrath was raised against Jesus we now receive the hand of God’s blessing as we are sent out to live our lives to the glory of God. May the LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn His face toward you and give you His peace, both now and forevermore. Amen. Seasons of the Cross Green: The colors of the various seasons of the Christian year express the mood or feeling of that season. Green expresses the ongoing work of God and our participation in him and in his work. Though God’s work of creating is finished, his work to sustain and grow his Kingdom is not. Particularly, in this season after Pentecost, we strive to live in and through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit - praying and living so as to display and declare the glory of Jesus in all we do. Scripture Passage and Sermon Outline Proclamation of God’s Word Text: Zechariah 3:1-9 (ESV) Title: Accused, Redeemed Ambassadors Teacher: Tim Rice 1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” 3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by. 6 And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured Joshua, 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here. 8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring my servant the Branch. 9 For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. Intro: Zechariah means “YHWH has remembered…” ACCUSED BEFORE GOD What is it like to be accused (and what do you do when your conscience agrees with your accusers)? ATONEMENT: DEFENDED & CLEANSED So what would it mean to be defended by the LORD? A SIGN OF HIS GRACE A sign always points beyond itself to something else… YOU CAN PRAY WITH US… 1. Worship the LORD our Defender. Praise Him, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that He rebukes Satan as He accuses those who truly belong to Christ. 2. How have you been convinced of your guilt before God but you’ve doubted Jesus’ ability to cleanse you? Confess your unbelief to Jesus, asking Him to forgive you and to assure you by helping your unbelief. 3. Give thanks to Jesus for being stripped in our place on the Cross so that we could be clothed. Thank Him for bearing the accusations we deserve so that we could have His place of acceptance with the Father! 4. Who do you know that represents Jesus well? Pray for them, asking the Lord 1) to help them to remain faithful (and actually grow in faithfulness) and 2) to help you learn from them. 5. Read 1 Peter 2:9. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you “proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” Pray for words with people who don’t know Jesus, and especially a gracious attitude toward them.
