n last year’s Buyer’s Guide, we noted
the surge in popularity of mirrorless
interchangeable-lens cameras, and
this year, that trend has continued. As
of this writing, in the time since last
year’s guide went to press, 21 new mirrorless models have been introduced
(with more rumored to arrive in the
next few weeks), while only 11 new
DSLRs have debuted. For many enthusiasts, and even pros, the compact
bodies and lenses made possible by
mirrorless technology are compelling
a shift to these smaller systems. And,
as mirrorless tech has improved, the
trade-offs have diminished.
For example, if one wanted the benefits of a full-frame imaging sensor, a
DSLR was the only option until Sony
unveiled the a7 and a7R full-frame
mirrorless cameras. Another trade-off
was speed. Contrast-detection AF used
by mirrorless cameras has historically
been slower than the phase-detection
AF found in DSLRs. That has changed,
too, though. Advances in contrastdetection AF, including hybrid systems
that employ data from the imaging sensor itself to calculate phase difference,
have achieved faster AF and AF tracking. Many mirrorless models now compete in frames-per-second continuous
shooting rates, and some even surpass
the fastest DSLRs—Nikon’s 1 V3, for

Nikon 1 V3
example, can shoot up to 20 fps, and
an incredible 60 fps with focus locked.
Another trend in the last year has
been the inclusion of WiFi in both mirrorless and DSLR models. Once a rare
feature or one that required an optional
accessory, more new cameras are shipping with WiFi built in, which allows
exciting capabilities such as remote
viewing and control of the camera via
smartphone or tablet, and the ability
to wirelessly transfer images to these
devices and share them via online services from just about anywhere.
The popularity of mirrorless cameras is also encouraging the develop-
20 !
fps
ment of new lenses for these systems,
not only from the system manufacturers themselves, but also from popular
lens makers like Sigma and Tamron,
eroding another historical advantage
of established DSLR systems with their
deep lens lineups.
One future-looking technology that’s
starting to make its way into mirrorless
cameras is 4K video. Panasonic was the
first to introduce this high-end video
standard in their LUMIX DMC-GH4
earlier this year, and Sony was close
behind with their a7S model. Though
4K is the future, there still are some
technical hurdles working with it, particularly in output and postprocessing,
so for most photographers who want to
do some video work, full HD (1080)
video is probably the better choice,
though there’s certainly no harm in
choosing a camera that gives you the
option, as both the Panasonic and Sony
cameras do.
Besides all of the exciting creative
possibilities these advances in imaging technology offer us, there’s another
great benefit—lower prices, meaning
wider accessibility for photographers
working with budgets small or large.
This issue is packed not only with
the latest cameras and lenses, but the
whole spectrum of photography gear,
accessories and software to help you
take your best images ever.

Introducing Blackmagic URSA, the world’s first
user upgradeable 4K digital film camera!
Blackmagic URSA is the world’s first high end digital film camera designed to
revolutionize workflow on set. Built to handle the ergonomics of large film crews
as well as single person use, URSA has everything built in, including a massive
10 inch fold out on set monitor, large user upgradeable Super 35 global shutter
4K image sensor, 12G-SDI and internal dual RAW and ProRes recorders.
Super 35 Size Sensor
URSA is a true professional digital film camera with a 4K sensor,
global shutter and an incredible 12 stops of dynamic range.
The wide dynamic range blows away regular video cameras or
even high end broadcast cameras, so you get dramatically better images that
look like true digital film. The extra large Super 35 size allows for creative shallow
depth of field shooting plus RAW and ProRes means you get incredible quality!
Dual Recorders
Blackmagic URSA features dual recorders so you never need
to stop recording to change media. That’s critical if you are
shooting an historical event, important interview or where you
just cannot stop shooting! Simply load an empty CFast card into the second
recorder and when the current card is full, the recording will continue onto the
second card, allowing you to change out the full card and keep shooting!
www.blackmagicdesign.com
User Upgradeable Sensor
Blackmagic URSA features a modular camera turret that can
be removed by unscrewing 4 simple bolts! The camera turret
includes the sensor, lens mount and lens control connections
and can be upgraded in the future when new types of sensors are developed.
This means your next camera will be a fraction of the cost of buying a whole
new camera! Choose professional PL mount, popular EF mount and more!
Built in On Set Monitoring!
Say goodbye to bulky on set monitors because
you get a massive fold out 10 inch screen built
into Blackmagic URSA, making it the world’s
biggest viewfinder! The screen is super bright and features an ultra
wide viewing angle. URSA also includes two extra 5” touch screens on
both sides of the camera showing settings such as format, frame rate,
shutter angle plus scopes for checking levels, audio and focus!

NIKON D3300
Nikon’s D3300 updates the excellent D3200 with a new EXPEED 4
image processor, greater ISO latitude and faster continuous shooting
at 5 fps. Resolution is unchanged at 24.2 megapixels, but the D3300’s
sensor omits the low-pass filter, increasing sharpness potential.
Like its predecessor, the D3300 employs a 420-pixel RGB metering
system and 11-point AF system that functions in light as dim as EV -1.
Like other entry-level Nikon DSLRs, the D3300 has no AF motor, relying
on lenses that have one—the AF-S and AF-I optics.
An optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter adds WiFi connectivity
for instant uploading of images and videos to a smart device, which can
also be used to operate the D3300 remotely. Estimated Street Price:

Canon’s EOS Rebel T5 is the newest entrylevel model in the EOS DSLR lineup, and improves on its T3 predecessor in a number of
ways, including a 50% increase in pixel count,
a more powerful processor, a bigger LCD and
higher-res video.
The faster T5 can shoot RAW as well as
JPEGs at 3 fps (in bursts of up to 6 RAWs or
69 highest-quality JPEGs). It shares its predecessor’s eye-level pentamirror viewfinder
(which shows 95% of the actual image area),
but the T5 has a larger, higher-resolution LCD
monitor (3 inches vs. 2.7 inches).
Video capabilities include 1080p full HD
capture at 30, 25 or 24 fps (the T3 was limited
to 720p HD at 30 or 25 fps). Estimated Street

Like the D3300, the D5300’s 24.2-megapixel DX senso
filter, and is paired with the EXPEED 4 processor, which not only is faster, but improves battery life. It can shoot JPEG and 12-bit RAW files at 5 fps and 14-bit RAW
at 4 fps. The 39-point phase-detect AF system includes nine cross-type sensors in
the center. The D5300 can do 1080 video at 60p (also 30p and 24p) with full-time
contrast-based AF or manual focusing, and stereo sound via the built-in mic or
an optional external mic. Integrated WiFi lets you control the camera remotely via
smartphone or tablet. Like the D3300, it also lacks an AF motor, so it can autofocus
only with AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses. Estimated Street Price: $799 (body only).

PENTAX K-S1
The K-S1 introduces a new 20.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor
with no low-pass filter (but includes the filter simulator introduced in the
flagship K-3). There’s an 11-point AF system, 77-segment multi-pattern
metering, in-body sensor-shift stabilization and shooting at up to 5.4 fps.
Despite its compact size, the K-S1 features a pentaprism finder
that shows approximately 100% of the actual image area, with a 0.95X
magnification factor. The camera can automatically compensate for
lens distortion, chromatic aberration, peripheral brightness (vignetting) and diffraction.
Insert an optional Flucard and you get WiFi capability for remote camera operation via your smartphone or tablet. Video capabilities include
H.264 1080 full HD at 30/25/24 fps, with a built-in stereo microphone.

works in light as dim as EV -3, and can keep up with the top shooting
speed, while built-in WiFi makes for quick and simple wireless image
transfer, and remote control via smart device. Normal ISO range is 10012,800, expandable to 50-51,200.
The 3.2-inch LCD monitor tilts—a first for a full-frame Nikon DSLR.
Video features are the same as for the new D810, including full HD at
60p, smooth time-lapse shooting and built-in stereo microphone, plus
jacks for an external mic and headphones. Estimated Street Price: TBA.

36.3 MP FullFrame FX Sensor
The D810 shares the same 36.3-megapixel resolution as its
groundbreaking predecessor, but with a new CMOS sensor that
has no low-pass filter, a wider dynamic range, the EXPEED 4
processor and continuous shooting of up to 5 fps.
Video has also been stepped up. The D810 can do full HD
at 60p, 30p and 24p, and offers a Flat Picture Control profile for
maximum versatility in postproduction. In-camera time-lapse
and interval-timer shooting, a built-in stereo microphone, plus
full-time AF and full manual control round out the camera’s motion features.
New AF algorithms provide more precise autofocusing,
even in dim light. The 51-point AF system includes 15 cross-type
sensors and 11 cross-types that function at ƒ/8—ideal when using a teleconverter. Estimated Street Price: $3,299 (body only).
A full-frame DSLR with a retro attitude, the
Df features a design reminiscent of Nikon’s classic
film SLRs. Simple control dials for everything from
shutter speed, EV and ISO to drive and exposure
modes allow you to set these without even switching on the camera. Old school!
But inside the compact magnesium-alloy body
is current high tech: the 16.2-megapixel, full-frame
CMOS sensor from the flagship D4, 2016-pixel 3D
Matrix Metering and scene-recognition system, a
versatile 39-point AF system with 3D Tracking and
Auto Area AF, in-camera HDR, two- and five-frame
auto-bracketing and more.
EXPEED 3 processing optimizes image quality,
provides quick startup and 5.5 fps shooting, and
ISOs up to 204,800. In keeping with the back-tobasics theme, there’s no video. Estimated Street

PENTAX 645Z
By far, the least costly way to get Sony’s first medium-format CMOS
sensor, the Pentax 645Z can shoot 51.4-megapixel still images at an
amazing 3 fps (for a medium-format camera), and it’s the only mediumformat camera thus far to do video (1080/60i and 30p, along with 4K
interval video).
Its SAFOX 11 phase-detection AF system is patterned after the K-3’s,
with 27 sensor points (25 cross-type), and there’s contrast-detect AF
in Live View mode. The 645Z can save files in two 14-bit RAW formats:
Pentax’s PEF and Adobe’s DNG.
The 645Z can use all the lenses for Pentax’s 645 medium-format film
cameras, along with new lenses designed for the digital 645 models, from
a 28-45mm zoom to a 400mm telephoto. Estimated Street Price: $8,499.

Nikon’s professional flagship, the D4S is the
fastest Nikon DSLR (11 fps at full-res with continuous AF) with its 16.2-megapixel FX-format fullframe CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processing.
The sensor/processor combo makes possible
full HD video at 60p (up from 30p in the D4), with
simultaneous writing to memory card and uncompressed output to an external recorder via HDMI,
when desired, with mono sound via a built-in microphone or stereo via an optional external mic.
While the basic AF system is the same as the
D4’s (51 points, works down to EV -2 and with
lens/converter combos as slow as ƒ/8), recalibrated AF algorithms and a new Group Area AF
mode improve performance on moving subjects.
Subtle changes from the D4 include improved ergonomics and shorter viewfinder blackout time
for easier subject tracking. List Price: $6,499.

FUJIFILM X-A1
Fujifilm’s X-A1 is the entry-level model in the
X-series lineup, sharing the compact dimensions
of the recent X-M1, but with a 16.3-megapixel
APS-C CMOS sensor that uses a conventional
Bayer RGB filter rather than the unique Fujifilm
X-Trans sensor in the other X-series cameras.
While the top-end X-Pro1 and X-E1 have
built-in eye-level viewfinders, the X-A1 doesn’t,
and that’s part of why it’s so compact. A big
3-inch LCD screen tilts for easy composition.
The X-A1 can shoot up to 5.6 fps, and you can
do multiple exposures, using the first image as a
guide for positioning. Video capabilities include
1080p at 30 fps and stereo sound via built-in

a tilting, 3-inch LCD monitor.
The X-T1 can shoot at 8 fps with focus tracking (3 fps with full-time live view). It’s also compatible with SDXC UHS-II memory cards, with

Leica’s first mirrorless camera, the T, in the
words of chairman Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, is
“the most precise thing, and the most beautiful,
we’ve ever made.” That says a lot, considering
Leica’s long history as a maker of precise and
elegantly engineered cameras.
Its Unibody design is machined from a solid
block of aluminum, and there are just two buttons, two dials and a big, 3.7-inch touch-screen
LCD, making the camera elegantly simple to use.
Inside are a 16.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
and a contrast-based AF system. You can shoot
at up to 5 fps, in JPEG or RAW+JPEG. The T can
also do full HD video at 30 fps.
Leica introduced two T-mount lenses with
the camera—the Vario-Elmarit 18-56mm ƒ/3.55.6 and the 23mm ƒ/2 Summicron—with more to
follow. Estimated Street Price: $1,850.
NIKON 1 S2
The S2 is the newest entry-level model in
the Nikon 1 lineup, about the size of the J4,
but with a 14.2-megapixel, CX-format sensor,
no built-in WiFi (an optional accessory can
add it) and a lower-resolution, 3.0-inch LCD
monitor—along with a lower price.
However, it shares a number of features
with the higher-end models, including fullresolution shooting at up to 20 fps with AF
and 60 fps with focus locked on the first
frame, a built-in flash, full HD video at 60p
and 30p, a built-in stereo microphone and
an electronic shutter with speeds from 30 to
1/16,000 sec.
Multiple effect modes are available, plus
2-shot in-camera HDR to enhance creative
options. Estimated Street Price: $449 (with 1
NIKKOR 11-27.5mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 zoom).
FUJIFILM X-E2
The X-E2 features Fujifilm’s 16.3-megapixel
APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor, which adds more
than 100,000 phase-detection pixels for quicker AF in good light (the camera automatically
switches to contrast-based AF in dim light).
The sensor works with the EXR Processor II to improve image quality and shooting
speed, and enables the Lens Modulation Optimizer that employs information on lens focal
length and aperture to compensate for diffraction and aberrations.
The X-E2 retains the high-res OLED EVF of
its predecessor X-E1, but provides a new, larger
and higher-res 3-inch LCD monitor. It can shoot
at 7 fps (3 fps with focus tracking). Also new is
full HD video at 60p and 30p with stereo sound
via built-in or optional external mic. Estimated

For those who would like the V3’s main assets in an even more compact
package, there’s the Nikon 1 J4. In fact, you can think of the Nikon 1 J4 as a
much smaller V3, without the eye-level EVF, grip and tilting monitor.
It features the same 18.4-megapixel CX-format sensor, EXPEED 4A image
processing, video and WiFi capabilities, the same quick hybrid AF system
and still capture at 20 fps with AF or 60 fps with focus locked.
The Auto Image Capture mode snags full-sized still images automatically
during video recording, saving the 20 best stills. Motion Snapshot Mode records a still image and 1.6 seconds of video, which plays back in slow motion
over 4 seconds. There’s also an Easy Panorama Mode and in-camera HDR.
Estimated Street Price: $599 (with 10-30mm PD zoom lens).
Nikon’s newest flagship 1-series mirrorless camera, the V3 features a
new 18.4-megapixel, CX-format (one-inch) CMOS sensor, a new EXPEED 4A

you control the camera remotely via smartphone.
With its new hybrid AF system that features 171 contrast-detect areas and
105 areas supporting phase-detection AF, the V3 can shoot up to 20 fps at
full resolution with AF and up to 60 fps with focus locked at the first frame.
Video capabilities now include full HD at 60p, as well as 30p and several
slow-motion modes. There’s a built-in stereo microphone and the option

Bad things happen to even the
most talented and prepared photographers. If you’re not careful,
you can find yourself in a difficult financial position. Having a key piece
of gear break down at a bad time,
discovering that your images are
being used without your consent or
a classic case of Bridezilla can result in significant financial setbacks.
Professional Photographers of America protects your business when you

(the camera can shoot 8 fps with focus locked
at the first frame). Focus peaking is available for
manual focusing.
The E-PL7’s built-in WiFi allows you to operate

Though it replaces its big brothers’ five-axis
sensor-shift image stabilization with a three-axis
unit and lacks their weather sealing, its list price is
about half that of the E-M1. It also has the same
81-point contrast-based AF system as the E-M5, but
focus tracking has been improved.
The E-M10 can shoot up to 20 RAW frames or
an unlimited number of JPEGs at 8 fps in singleshot AF mode and at 3.5 fps with continuous AF

internal systems with the a5000’s tiny body. You
get the a6000’s 24.3-megapixel, APS-C Sony
Exmor CMOS sensor, Bionz X processor, ISOs from
100-25600 and Fast Hybrid AF system with 25 contrast AF points and 179 on-sensor phase-detection
AF points, and gain touch capability (including AF)
with the 3-inch tilting LCD, but lose the a6000’s
eye-level EVF, additional controls and 11 fps shooting (the a5100 can do 6 fps with subject tracking).
The a5100 can shoot full HD video at 60p
and 24p, with continuous autofocusing. You can
even record AVCHD or XAVC S video and MP4
video simultaneously. Touch focus makes it easy
to do smooth focus shift during video shooting.
Estimated Street Price: $699 (with 16-50mm
retractable zoom).
SONY ALPHA a7S
The a7S has a form factor similar to the
other a7 models, but a new 12.2-megapixel,
full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor features a
very wide dynamic range and 4K video.
The a7S uses the same high-precision
Fast Intelligent AF system as the a7R, but the
contrast-based system’s sensitivity has been
improved to EV -4 (the a7 features Sony’s
Fast Hybrid AF, which combines on-sensor
phase- and contrast-detection AF for improved performance on action subjects). The
a7S can do 5 fps in Speed Priority Continuous
Shooting mode.
4K video requires output to an optional
third-party 4K recorder, but you can record
full HD directly to a memory card at 60p, 60i,
30p or 24p. And for the first time in a Sony
camera, the workflow-friendly XAVC S recording format is provided, along with AVCHD
and MP4 codecs. Estimated Street Price:
$2,499 (body only).

Sony’s replacement for the NEX-6, the a6000 h
similar form factor, but improves many areas. A fast
vanced Hybrid AF system can focus in as little as 0.06 of a
second, thanks to a powerful BIONZ X processor and 179
phase-detection AF points on the image sensor, complemented by 25-point contrast AF, and the ability to track a
subject at 11 fps.
The 24.3-megapixel APS-C Exmor CMOS image sensor increases the pixel count 50% over that of the NEX-6.
There’s an eye-level OLED Tru-Finder and a 3-inch tilting
LCD monitor.
Video specs are similar to the NEX-6, with full HD at
60p, 60i and 24p, in MPEG-4 AVCHD or MP4. A built-in
mic provides stereo sound. Estimated Street Price: $749
(with 16-50mm motorized zoom). DP

Advancements in wireless technology and the popularity of the appdriven smartphone have revolutionized
what’s possible over WiFi between devices. Chances are, your current—or at

WiFi that enables it to connect to your

provided by your smartphone via the Sony

SIGMA DP2
QUATTRO
With an all-new Foveon X3 image
sensor and a strikingly different design,
Sigma’s 29-megapixel dp2 Quattro is the
first in what will be a new line of cameras
from Sigma. The ƒ/2.8 lens, designed specifically for use with the new sensor, has a
35mm-equivalent focal length of 45mm,
slightly wider than what’s typically considered “normal” perspective, and can focus
on objects as close as approximately 11
inches. There’s no video capability, but
both RAW and JPEG capture is available
in multiple aspect ratios. The contrastdetection AF has been improved and
offers several modes, including Face
Detection AF, or full manual exposure and
focus are possible. Sigma has also improved the dp2 Quattro’s high ISO performance, processing time, resolution and
battery life compared to its DP Merrill
predecessors. List Price: $999.

FUJIFILM
X100S
The X100S improves on its predecessor with more resolution (16 megapixels
versus 12 megapixels), on-sensor phasedetection AF and a faster processor. The
fixed lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal
length of 35mm, with a fast maximum
aperture of ƒ/2. Continuous shooting at 6
fps for up to 31 frames is possible in JPEG
mode; RAW shooting is also available,
though slower, as is full HD (1920x1080)
video. We consider an eye-level viewfinder practically indispensable, as LCDs are
potentially quite difficult to view in bright
outdoor conditions, and the unique hybrid viewfinder in the X100S offers both
the clarity of an optical viewfinder and
the convenience of data feedback of
an EVF—switch between the two as
needed. List Price: $1,299.

G1 X MARK II
The 12.8-megapixel PowerShot G1 X Mark II is
considerably faster than the G1 X, with continuous
shooting at up to 5.2 fps (vs. 1.9 fps). It features a
faster lens, with a maximum aperture of ƒ/2 (vs.
ƒ/2.8), and covers a wider 35mm-equivalent range
from 24-120mm, up from the 28-112mm of the G1
X. The Mark II adds WiFi, allowing remote control of
the camera with your smartphone. There’s no built-in
viewfinder, but the optional EVF-DC1 can be attached
to the accessory shoe, and the 3-inch touch-screen
LCD can tilt for easier viewing. RAW and JPEG image
formats are available, as is full HD video. Dual Control

SONY RX1R
This full-frame compact is identical to its sibling RX1,
but with one key difference: The RX1R omits the optical lowpass filter, which, while increasing the possibility of moiré
and color artifacts, provides significantly sharper images.
(For more on the pros and cons of low-pass filters, see
dpmag.com/low-pass-filter.) Otherwise, it offers the same
24.3-megapixel sensor and fast 35mm ƒ/2 Carl Zeiss lens,
the ability to capture full HD (1920x1080) video, plus RAW
and JPEG stills at up to 5 fps. While there’s no built-in eyelevel viewfinder, both optical and EVF accessory viewfinders are available that mount in the camera’s Multi Interface
Shoe. The RX1R includes features found in other Sony cameras like Multi Frame noise reduction. List Price: $2,799.
BLACKMAGIC POCKET CINEMA
Though this is a video-only device (no
stills), a camera this small and yet capable of capturing 1080 HD CinemaDNG
RAW or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) files merits inclusion in a roundup of pro-quality
compact cameras. With a wider dynamic
range (13 stops) than typical video devices, you’ll capture better shadow and
highlight details. The Blackmagic Pocket
Cinema Camera is compatible with Micro
Four Thirds System lenses or Super 16
lenses with an adapter. It also offers all
the ports you’ll need for video out, audio
in and even remote operation. If you’re
considering a dedicated video camera or
upgrading your still camera for one with
better video, this is one very interesting
option. List Price: $995.

previous models with a built-in, retractable EVF,
and is built around a new 35mm-equivalent
24-70mm ƒ/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens (the RX100 II
featured a 28-100mm-equivalent lens). Continuous shooting is possible at speeds of up to
10 fps for up to 13 shots per burst in RAW mode
or 12 shots in JPEG. Full HD video (1920x1080)
is available in several frame rates, with stereo
sound via a built-in mic that’s adjustable to 16
levels. The 3-inch LCD can be tilted up approximately 180° and down approximately 45° for
easier shooting from odd angles. The RX100 III
also offers many of Sony’s innovative imaging
technologies and can be controlled via a smartphone app over WiFi. List Price: $799.

Sure to be a popular lens with its wide-perspective zoom, constant ƒ/4 max aperture and
Image Stabilizer, the EF 16-35mm ƒ/4L IS USM incorporates some of Canon’s most advanced
optical technology, including three GMo (Glass-Molded) aspheric elements, two UD (UltraLow Dispersion) elements and fluorine lens coatings on front and rear surfaces to repel dust
and ensure color fidelity. The IS system is smart enough to automatically select the correct
stabilization mode, whether handholding or panning the camera. List Price: $1,199.
Canon’s EF-S series lenses are designed to produce a smaller image circle for use with
APS-C-sensor cameras. The EF-S 10-18mm ƒ/4.5-5.6 IS STM is Canon’s widest EF-S lens, to

Tamron is well known for their versatile zoom lenses, like the 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC

as the result of a new optical layout and PZD (Piezo Drive) AF system, which is simpler and
more compact than the previous AF system. The ultrasonic AF system not only is faster and
more precise, you also have access to full manual focusing, if you prefer. List Price: $849.
Tamron’s first lens designed for the Micro Four Thirds system, the 14-150mm F/3.5-5.8

For extreme telephoto reach, the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is hard to

FLASH, MONOLIGHTS & STROBES
TOOLS FOR CREATING PERFECT ILLUMINATION |
or the ultimate in high-speed photography, nothing can beat a strobe,
flash or monolight. Because the units
are designed to flash for only a moment,
the amount of illumination that can be
achieved is very bright and strong, and
yet they’re cooler to use over traditional
always-on light sources like tungsten, halogen or quartz bulbs because continuous
light sources like these stay hot and only
get hotter as the shoot progresses. Unlike
continuous lights, flashes can also be used
to absolutely freeze the action as well as
perform timed exposure effects like multiple exposures.
Though the terms are commonly used
interchangeably, the difference between
a monolight and a strobe or flash is that
a monolight must be powered from an AC
or DC source like portable power packs or
outlets. Strobes and flashes like the speedlights that cameras use, on the other hand,
are largely self-powered through the use of
batteries or through a powered connection
to the camera like a hot-shoe. Though these
numbers are largely open to interpretation,
the power of a monolight is generally given
in watt-seconds (W/s), the total power capable of being generated per second, while
speedlights still use guide numbers (GN), a
measure of the light output by distance and
light sensitivity.
Be aware that guide numbers can be
listed in feet or meters. (Manufacturers
use alternate methods of measuring output, however, so keep in mind that both
ratings are an approximation.) Monolights
strong enough to be used as a primary light
start at 300W/s, while studio pros stick
with systems offering 1200W/s or more. Inexpensive models in the 100W/s to 300W/s
range are best used as secondary lights for
setups with multiple lights, but they can
still be used as a primary light for a subject
if situated closely enough. For hot-shoe
flashes, the larger the guide number, the
more powerful the flash. Canon’s flagship
Speedlite 600EX-RT (Estimated Street
Price: $549), for example, has a GN of

270-EX II (Estimated Street Price: $169)

Light quality is important, as well. There
are a number of large output systems offering similar specifications as top-tier
lighting solutions from companies like
Profoto and Broncolor at a savings in cost.
Top-of-the-line lights offer extremely consistent flash bursts and high-quality light
rendering; however, lower-cost solutions
may have aberrance between each pop,
which can result in alternating exposures,
especially as the bulb ages. Lower power
systems can still be quite effective, on the
other hand. In fact, working with multiple
lower-output models can be far more versatile for lighting, effects and portraiture
setups over purchasing a single high-cost
unit. The more “lights” you have, after all,
the more “light” you’ll have, which translates into extended depth of field and faster
shutter speeds depending on the flash.
With an onboard rechargeable battery
that will last for more than 500 full power
flashes, the Flashpoint RL-600 RoveLight
600ws (List Price: $589) is an easily portable monolight available through Adorama.

From full to 1/128th power, there are 22
steps of range that can be dialed in through
the rear or through an included wireless

mount (List Price: $600) for adding lightmodification tools like umbrellas. Flash
duration can be as fast as 1/15,000th of
a second, and both versions can be purchased with an extra battery.
The Interfit ACE 100W/s flash kit (Estimated Street Price: $94) with a 33-inch
translucent umbrella and stand is an inexpensive model that would be a great learning solution for beginners, especially as it
only has a range of four stops (full to 1/8th
power) and a fairly long recycle time of
three seconds between light pops. Interfit
also offers a number of other kits with soft-

the included MH2015 Road Flash Heads

With through-the-lens (TTL) metering and control over multiple flashes in
exponential groups, modern on-camera
flashes are so advanced that a number
of photographers have chosen to use them
as their primary light source, especially
when they can be coupled with affordable and alternative third-party flashes
and strobe systems available for the major manufacturers. Companies like Metz,
Neewer, Nissin, Phottix, Quantum, Sigma,
Sunpak, Vivitar and Yongnuo produce
similar lighting solutions with the same
features and automatic metering (or manual metering for a savings in cost), as well
as unique features like shutter rates faster than the 1/250th sec. maximum sync
speed found in most brand speedlights.
These are often available at a discount
over brand solutions, and many flashes
can be mixed and matched with these
other systems, as well.
There are also a variety of continuous on-camera lights available for
working with video. Manfrotto has the
Spectra line of incredibly compact LED
lights, while Litepanels offers several
models like the MicroPro, Croma, Luma
and Sola ENG with its own two-leaf barndoor panels. LED panels will work with
light-modification tools, but the soft light
output isn’t nearly as powerful as the
high-contrast output of a hot-shoe flash.
On the other hand, many LED lights can
dial in the color temperature between
tungsten and daylight while flashes require a gel for the same effect.

HARDWARE
EXTERNAL STORAGE
PROTECT YOUR PHOTO AND VIDEO LIBRARY FROM THE UNEXPECTED
BY WES PITTS
e frequently emphasize the importance of backing up your
photo library on a routine basis.
Longtime readers may recall a very sad
story many years ago wherein I lost over a
gigabyte of photos when the hard drive of
a brand-new computer crashed. (Yes, it’s
still haunting me to this day.) I definitely learned my lesson, and I hope you’ll
avoid such an easily preventable loss.
W
A good backup strategy involves multiple copies of your photos, videos and any
other important files in more than one
physical location. Local backups are the
first step. For a few hundred dollars, you
can back up all of your data to an external
drive like those we highlight here. If you
do nothing else, please do this.
Add cloud-based services to the plan,
and your files are practically guaranteed
to survive just about any disaster, whether natural or technological. If you’re reluctant to add yet another subscription
expense to your budget, I completely understand, but it’s hard to put a price on
the value of your photo library.
In addition to the drives we feature
here, several of those included in last
year’s guide are still current and available: dpmag.com/storage-2014.
DROBO
Install up to four drives in the
Drobo smart enclosure for one of
the easiest redundant storage arrays to use and maintain. Drobo
Dashboard software lets you configure your drives and even specify
the amount of storage space that’s
available to back up apps like Time
Machine, reserving space for other

level of data protection by being both waterproof, able to withstand up to 10 feet of
water for 72 hours, and fireproof at temperatures up to 1550º F for one half hour. In the
event of a catastrophe, it also includes one

LACIE CHRISTOFLE SPHÈRE
LaCie is known for reimagining the aesthetics of hard drive enclosures, and the Christofle
Sphère is certainly the most luxurious storage
solution we’ve seen. Designed by French silversmith Christofle, the Sphère is handmade and
clad in silver—a “genuinely functional work of
art,” as LaCie describes it. Though not a pragmatic storage solution (LaCie does offer many
more reasonably priced options), it’s so over the

If you have multiple computers to back
up at home, consider a network-attached
storage (NAS) solution like Seagate Central.
Connect it to your WiFi router via Ethernet,
and all of your computers can wirelessly
back up to the device using Time Machine
for Mac OS X or Seagate Backup Plus for
Windows. You can also access your data
remotely from a computer or mobile device.
WESTERN DIGITAL MY CLOUD MIRROR
Another NAS storage option, My Cloud Mirror is preconfigured as a RAID 1, and there are two expansion ports
that let you add even more storage by attaching compatible USB 3.0 drives. It can even integrate with your
Dropbox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive accounts,
and transfer files between it and your online storage. DP
Capacities Available: 4 TB, 6 TB, 8 TB
Interface: Ethernet/WiFi
Dimensions (HxWxD): 6.8x3.9x6.1 inches
List Price: From $349 (4 TB) to $549 (8 TB)
CLOUD STORAGE
DROPBOX
Dropbox is one of the most popular cloud
storage solutions, and for good reason. It’s
thoughtfully designed and easy to use, and
offers companion apps for mobile devices and
a dedicated desktop client in addition to web
browser access. A dedicated Dropbox folder on
your desktop automatically syncs its contents to
the cloud. Both free and paid Pro plans are available, the latter of which Dropbox recently made
much more attractive by dramatically increasing
the amount of storage provided at no extra cost.
Also included is Version History, which gives
you access to any file ever stored in Dropbox,
whether changed or deleted, for up to 30 days.
Free Storage: 2 GB
(up to 18 GB through referrals)
Pro Plan: $99/year (1 TB)
GOOGLE DRIVE
Google Drive lets you max out with some pretty
sizable storage capacity at 30 TB, and the good
news is, the price has come way down since last
year, when 16 TB would have cost you $799 per
month. Today, you can get almost double that for
just $299. The plan that probably will appeal to
most users is 1 TB for $9.99 per month. If you
have a Gmail account, you already have a Google
Drive with 15 GB of free storage. Another perk
for photographers: photos 2048x2048 pixels or
smaller don’t count against your storage limit.
Free Storage: 15 GB
Paid Plans: From $1.99/month (100 GB)
to $299.99/month (30 TB)
iCLOUD DRIVE
This fall, with the release of OS X Yosemite
and iOS 8, Apple will debut iCloud Drive, which
will allow you to store any type of file in the cloud
by simply dropping it in the iCloud Drive folder.
Compatible with both Mac and Windows systems,
storage tiers up to 1 TB will be available, although
pricing for that level hasn’t yet been announced
at the time of this writing. However, the pricing
that has been revealed puts it on par with the
more affordable cloud offerings.
Free Storage: 5 GB
Paid Plans: $0.99/month (20 GB);
$3.99/month (200 GB)
MICROSOFT ONEDRIVE
Formerly known as SkyDrive, Microsoft’s cloud
service is another relatively inexpensive option and
is even less costly than it was when known as
SkyDrive. It’s not just for Windows, either—there’s
support for Mac OS X and iOS, Android and, of
course, Windows tablets and phones. If you activate camera roll backup, you’ll get an additional 3
GB of space for free. And, if you’re an Office 365
subscriber, you’ll get even more free space—1 TB
per person and up to 5 TB per household.
Free Storage: 15 GB
Paid Plans: $1.99/month (100 GB)

COMPLETE SUITES PLUS SPECIALIZED APPS FOR YOUR DIGITAL
DARKROOM | BY ASHLEY MYERS-TURNER WITH WES PITTS
Adobe Creative Cloud
Photography Plan
he photo software space has seen
some big changes in recent years.
Google acquired Nik, Adobe went
to the cloud and, in June of this year,
Apple announced that Aperture will no
longer be developed, with users being
directed to a new—and at press time,
still mysterious—Photos app that will
launch sometime after the next update
to the Mac operating system, Yosemite,
which is due for release in the fall.
After a somewhat controversial transition from perpetual licenses to the subscription-based Creative Cloud (with the
exception of Lightroom and Photoshop
Elements, which are still available as a
perpetual license), Adobe introduced a
new Creative Cloud Photography Plan
with a lower price for photographers
who don’t need or want the entire
Creative Cloud suite. Welcome news!
While the big players tinker with
their business models, the plug-in and
specialized effects segment continues to
grow as some photographers are moving away from the single-app solution,
instead choosing a specific app to do
a specific job. Everything from noise
reduction to portrait enhancement to
black-and-white conversion can be done

just as well, and sometimes better, by an
app targeted to the purpose.
Whether you prefer to do most of
your processing in a single application
or use a variety of apps for different
tasks, here’s an overview of what’s new.
—Wes Pitts
ADOBE
Last year, Adobe shifted its Creative
Suite, including Photoshop, to the
Creative Cloud platform and recently announced a Creative Cloud Photography
Plan that includes access to Photoshop
CC and Lightroom (as well as some useful new mobile apps) at a lower monthly
price. Along with the release of this plan,
Adobe also announced new features for
Photoshop CC, including Perspective
Warp, Blur Gallery motion effects, Focus
Masking and improved Content-Aware
functionality. List Price: $9.99 monthly
($119.88 annually).
Lightroom has become the standard
for many photography pros and enthusiasts, with its focus on a streamlined
workflow to handle everything from
organizing and processing to exporting, printing and sharing your images.
Available as part of the Creative Cloud,
Lightroom is also still available with a
perpetual license. Lightroom 5 includes
tools to make common tasks faster
and easier, like the Advanced Healing
Brush, which lets you remove everything
from dust spots to larger distractions
with minimal effort by simply “painting” over the area you wish to remove.

HARDWARE • PRINTERS
THE BIG PRINT
PROFESSIONAL PHOTO PRINTERS FOR THE FINE ART OF PRINTMAKING
BY WES PITTS
he iconic Ansel Adams once said, “The negative is the
equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the
performance.” Though the technology of photographic
capture and printmaking has radically changed in the time
since, the sentiment is as applicable today—maybe even more
so—than in Adams’ day. More people are taking more photographs and sharing them more widely than ever before.
We’re inundated with images on social media, but the nature
of such sharing is transient. Nothing elevates a photograph out
T
of the torrent of easily forgotten images like a fine-art print.
Printmaking is an art form unto itself, and just as with the
taking of photographs, the equipment you choose will make a
big difference in the final result. While most modern printers
can produce reasonably good photographic prints, for the finest quality—prints that will last a lifetime—a dedicated photo
printer is well worth the investment. All of the printers featured here will let you make impressive 13x19-inch prints (or
even larger), ideal for framing.

KEY
CONSIDERATIONS
Pigment Vs. Dyes. Inkjet
printers use one of these two
types of ink. In the past, dyebased inks were able to produce a wider color range than
pigment inks, while pigment
provided much greater longevity. In recent years, however,
both ink types have improved,
with dye inks becoming more
fade resistant, and pigment
inks achieving greater color
depth and range. Most professional photo printers use
pigment inks.
Number Of Inks. A typical
multifunction printer will have
four inks: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Professional
photo printers include additional shades of these to
achieve greater color range
and subtlety. For example, the
Epson 3880’s UltraChrome
K3 ink set includes a Vivid
Magenta for more “intense”
blues and violets.
Multiple Monochrome Inks.
For black-and-white prints,
printers with multiple monochrome inks produce smoother
tonal gradations and a more
neutral palette than printers
that rely on mixing color inks
to achieve gray tones.
Droplet Size. The physical
size of each drop of ink the
printer lays down, or droplet
size, also affects the smoothness of a print’s tonality and
gradations. It’s an oversimplification—the pattern in which
droplets are laid down is also
an important factor—but generally, the smaller the droplet
size, the finer the result.
Roll Vs. Cut Sheet. Most of
the prints you’ll likely make
will be standard sizes on
cut-sheet paper, but if you’re
interested in panoramic photography, a printer that supports roll paper lets you make
seamless panoramic prints.

*Print speeds are average and may vary depending on a variety of factors, including system configuration and image content.

LIGHT MODIFIERS
ENHANCE YOUR SPEEDLIGHT FOR PRO LIGHTING EFFECTS |
hether using expensive studio solutions or affixed on-camera speedlight solutions, the number-one
quality to set professionals apart from amateurs is how they learn to control the light.
From background to foreground subject,
shaping the light in the image will give you
extended control over contrast, color and
mood. Professionals use higher-quality
lights for the best light rendition, but even
working with a speedlight system and the
right light modifiers can change a flat, uninteresting scene into something remarkable,
especially as multiple units and groups of
flashes can be used together wirelessly
to light a scene in a variety of different
ways. Popular manufacturers of lightmodification tools for speedlight flashes
and full studio monolights or strobes
include ExpoImaging, F.J. Westcott,

Most light modifiers fall into gene
categories based on how they shape
alter light. Diffusion gear, for example, w
channel light through semi-opaque mate
als to soften and reduce light spread. T
light produced is soft and flattering, l
the light you see on a person’s face throu
a window, or the overall even diffusion
light you find on a cloudy day. The nature
of the material can influence the light as it
passes through, as well. Softboxes and
larger octaboxes are the most common type of diffusion used in portraiture, but small domes, silks
and fabrics are also available to
diffuse on-camera flashes.
Bouncing light is another
way to control light spread.
Flashes with swiveling
heads can already do this
simply by throwing light
toward a ceiling or wall,
which reflects the light
back toward the subject in
a diffuse spread of reflected
light. This light is much more flat-

tering than
a directional
flash; there’s
less
shadow
and, hence, less
contrast. Several
tools can be used
to control the light spread of your
speedlight further, including reflectors, bounce cards, umbrellas and
beauty dishes. Adding reflective
materials like gold can warm the
reflected light while other materials like white and silver add a
bright specular pop, most useful for
upbeat commercial imagery and portraiture.
Reflectors and umbrellas are similar to softboxes, in effect, only without the frame of the
softbox, there’s more light spill to the sides
and consequently less strength and less
contrast. On the other hand, they’re much
faster to set up and tear down over a softbox.
Light can also be channeled and controlled through a number of light-shaping
tools like snoots, grids, barndoors, gobos,
flags and chiaroscuro equipment that can
also add patterns or shadows. These accessories are useful for adding to the power of
the light by channeling output forward while
reducing light spill to the sides. Conversely,
barndoors, flags, scrims and cutters will
block light or absorb it through black nonreflective materials, useful when you want
to light a smaller portion of a scene or if
there’s too much light from other sources.
Finally, color correction isn’t just a matter of white balance. Working with gels and
colored diffusion panels will give you a way
not only to correct for different sources of
light, like tungsten bulbs with a very warm
average color temperature of 3200K or
daylight temperature light sources at a more
bluish 5500K, but also a way to add colorful effects by covering the light with a gel.
ExpoImaging, Honl, LumiQuest and Rosco
are all great sources for gel kits. A basic gel
purchase should include orange CTO gels
for warming flash output to match warm
tungsten lights or incandescent bulbs. Similarly, blue CTB gels correct light output to
daylight while minus green filters will allow
you to work with fluorescence.

JOSEPH FORD
Clothed In The Landscape
“I’ve always been interested by the way that aerial photography gives us a different viewpoint, one which allows cars
to become toys, walls to become lines,” explains UK-based
editorial and advertising photographer JOSEPH FORD.
“It seemed logical to extend that to concepts like a railway
line becoming a zipper, and so I worked with stylists to
find clothes that matched the textures and shapes of my
aerial landscapes.
“The most difficult part of the process is choosing
which clothes to match to which landscapes, and finding
the linking points,” Ford confides. “I spend days looking

at the landscapes, looking for elements which remind me
of particular parts of clothes or accessories—motifs, stitching, shapes, textures. Once I have an idea of a combination, I spend hours or days making tiny adjustments to the
clothes in order to get the perspective just right.”
Ford began working on this series after visits to Mauritius and Sicily, where he had the opportunity to photograph from a helicopter. The work has been recognized
with numerous awards, and Ford has also created iterations of this concept for Lacoste, Missoni and Pepe Jeans.
