Robert’s gift is an ability to be a singing chameleon. He has mastered the art of transformation. Of course Robert can also impersonate himself, and then you see the real talent behind all of the voices he does in an impeccably convincing way. Robert has help to persuade you that you are seeing Elvis on the stage. His wife Brenda has carefully, and by hand, laundered the Elvis costume. Yes, the voice is there, Elvis reappearing from wherever he went years ago, but the costume is the finishing touch on the act. Some of us believe in our hearts, that it is not an act. It is just possible that this is a reincarnation of the singer that took the world by storm. And so we experience a host of emotions that the music and the act arouse in us. That is the power of music, Robert knows. He is an entertainer totally devoted to his audience and what he can make them feel. He is engaged with every single person sitting in front of him, and his intention is that they derive a good deal of joy from his presentation. It never fails, he says, that there is at least one unhappy camper in the audience. This person has been dragged there by his enthusiastic spouse and shows his displeasure by locking his arms in front of his chest, and scowling. Robert’s acute radar spies him and makes up his mind to bring that man around to displaying the same enthusiasm that the spouse has. He says that he always succeeds. Out of this transformation comes much of Robert’s satisfaction in doing what he loves – entertaining. While interviewing Robert at his home, his wife slipped an ironing board into the adjoining kitchen and began to press various items. She added comments here and there and then said that she was working on Robert’s costumes. A great deal of care goes into these costumes, Community Realty Medicine Hat, AB Res: 403-527-1011 FRIENDS all carefully chosen and some original to the singers Robert presents. When I arrived, and Brenda opened the door for me, she said that Robert was just in their studio rehearsing. Ironing, rehearsing, doing an interview, no time is wasted, but neither Robert nor Brenda complain about these chores that are not really a burden. Both were sure to point out that the shirt, western style, that Brenda was just pressing was an original Garth Brooks shirt made by Mo Betta. I found out that Mo Betta is Hawaiian pidgin English for much better – get it? My shirt is mo betta than yours. Like Shakespeare, Robert and Brenda know the importance of clothing: “For the apparel oft proclaims the man”. Humour is essential to Robert’s performances. He learned the power of tickling a person’s funny bone early in life. His family moved around, and Robert was always the new kid. He says he had no posse, which meant he stood alone against the bullies that thrive in playgrounds. He had to use comedy to avoid the inevitable beating. He rebuilt a bully when he showed the kindness that he says is learned at home. Brenda does not only launder and press precious costumes. She is an organizer and a tech and stage manager. She will also be a part of the show and is taking singing lessons. Ralph Brown is a vocal coach who works with both Robert and Brenda. Robert has to stretch Continued on page 4 NOW OPEN! Ph: 403-527-9112 $ 00 50 each Donna Rae Several years ago I was invited to join the group in India working at Mother Theresa’s in Calcutta, India. She had passed, but the nuns were still doing her work by taking the poorest of the poor and helping them die in dignity. I sent word that my conscience would not let me work in a country where they treated women so badly and hoping my small voice would have one little imprint on their situation. However, I learned that leprosy, aka Hansen’s disease was still flourishing there and it peaked my interest to learn why. Leprosy dates back to the bible times and I think we all thought it was cured and finished. Not so, in 2012 there were 168 new cases diagnosed (www.leprosy.org) in the U.S. alone and worldwide over 3,000,000 have leprosy. It is most proliferate in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. Apparently 75 children a day are diagnosed. This kind of makes our problems with colds and flus seem a little small doesn’t it. Can it come here? - of course, it is spread by sneezing and coughing. As often happens (eg Ebola), it focuses on the poorest communities. Leprosy is caused by the bacteria MYCOBACTERIUM LEPRAE (or Mycobacterium lepromatosis) and affects the nerves, respiratory, skin and eyes. Most of us have seen pictures of fingers, toes, noses, ears all being eaten away as the diseases slowly disables and kills the victim. It is curable with the medicine Dapsone and Rifampicin being taken for 6 months. The treatments are said to be free by the World Health Organization. When I inquired why so many poor people had leprosy in India, I was told that the poor were not given the remedy and I guess this part of the caste system in India where the poor are neglected, too much trouble to help them. I wonder why leprosy is still around, and ebola is still around. We should also know that polio is still around, and so is tuberculosis and syphilis, and just about every virus and bacteria that ever was. With many of the virus and bacteria, they have a strong influence on the poor and those nutritionally deficient. Let’s face it, we can’t kill every microbe that is out there, and we are learning that they don’t die, they are just subdued only to arise again at a later date. Good habits of how we live can go far with many predatory microbes. Good food, water, air, and avoid weakening our vitality with chemicals, toxins, fast foods. While it may not be possible to buy the auto lover on your holiday shopping list a new car, there are many gifts that are sure to please those people who can't get enough time behind the wheel or in the garage. • Global positioning system: Often referred to as a GPS, a global positioning system is a satellite-based navigation system providing location information no matter where drivers find themselves on their next road trips. If a GPS is within range of a GPS satellite, drivers will never again find themselves pulling over on the sides of roadways in an effort to find out just where they are. Though many new vehicles come with GPS, vehicle manufacturers tend to offer them as accessories and not standard features. So if your favorite driver is driving an older vehicle or did not splurge on a GPS when purchasing his latest ride, this gift is sure to please. • Car wash kit: Auto lovers not only love to get behind the wheel, but they also love to get behind the wheel of a good-looking automobile. A car wash kit, complete with a wash and wax that repels water and protects a good polish, is an ideal gift for auto enthusiasts who like their vehicles to look as good as they drive. add a personal touch to drivers' rides. Auto enthusiasts who have an equal passion for a certain sport may appreciate floor mats with the logo of their favorite team. • Hands-free headset: Car lovers spend lots of time in their cars. Though such time might once have afforded auto enthusiasts an escape from the daily grind, nowadays the prevalence of smartphones has made it easier than ever for the outside world to find its way into vehicles. As a result, auto enthusiasts may appreciate a hands-free headset that allows them to take calls while driving without compromising their concentration on the road. Some hands-free devices even allow drivers to stream music from their smartphones directly to their car stereos, allowing drivers to hit the open road while enjoying their favorite tunes. • Auto show tickets: Many autolovers keep an open eye for their next vehicle purchase. Auto shows are often the best places to learn about new vehicles and what motorists can expect in the future, so why not give your favorite car guy or gal tickets to an upcoming auto show? Decking the halls, catching up with old friends and holiday shopping make this time of year especially hectic. Though the season is generally jolly, there are those people who take advantage of the hectic nature of the holiday season, preying on busy holiday shoppers who may be understandably distracted as the season progresses. As a result, shoppers and holiday revelers should heed the following precautions to ensure this holiday season is as safe as it is festive. 1. Exercise caution at ATMs. Thousands of dollars change hands at stores and banks this time of year. Potential thieves know that ATMs make good places to target victims withdrawing funds for purchases. Shoppers should choose ATMs that are well lit and withdraw money only when banks are open. If that's not possible, avoid using ATMs in remote locations or dark alcoves. Keep your eyes fixed on your surroundings and be aware of the people FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21 9:00AM-6:00PM SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22 9:00AM-5:00PM HARLEY-DAVIDSON® OF MEDICINE HAT 1923 2ND AVE. DUNMORE, ALBERTA, T1B 0K3 www.hdmedhat.com 403-527-9235 in your vicinity. Promptly pocket your money and do not openly display your cash. 2. Keep purchases out of view. When shopping, keep your purchases hidden from prospective thieves. Make frequent trips to your car when shopping and store merchandise in the trunk of your car or in a cargo area with a cover drawn. Once items have been brought home, keep them well out of sight, stored in closets or away from windows. 3. Only park in well-lit lots. Finding a parking space at a busy mall can be difficult, but be picky when choosing spots. Try to park in a well-lit area in a busy location and be aware of the surrounding vehicles. If you feel uncomfortable going back to your car, ask a security guard to escort you. 4. Shop in groups. Go to the store with a group of friends. There is safety in numbers and having more eyes to look out is to your advantage. Thieves are less likely to approach a group of people than a solitary person. 5. Carry minimal items. Always keep your hands free to ward off any people in the event of an attack. Bags and packages weighing you down make you an easy target. 6. Leave extra credit cards at home. Carry only what you need on a shopping excursion. Do not carry your entire wallet or extra credit cards. This only puts you at greater risk of identity theft or fraud should you lose your wallet. (MS) Getting a head start on holiday shopping has its advantages. Holiday shoppers who begin their quests for the perfect gifts at the onset of the season or before the shopping season even begins often find the financial sting of holiday shopping is easier to manage when spread out over time, and starting early can save shoppers the hassle of navigating their ways through crowded stores and packed parking lots. But even holiday shoppers who hit the stores extra early should do so with a plan in hand, which can help shoppers save money while still finding the right gifts. • Establish and stick to a budget. Just because you may be starting your holiday shopping early does not mean you should throw financial caution to the wind. Establish a budget so holiday shopping won't find you facing significant debt, which is just as difficult to deal with in late fall as it is once the holidays have come and gone. If necessary, speak to family members before establishing your budget so you can all agree on holiday spending limits. Once you have established your holiday shopping budget, stick to it and avoid the temptation of overspending just because you're starting early. • Take your time. Arguably the greatest luxury of getting a head start on holiday shopping is the ability to take your time so you don't end up making expensive impulse purchases. Such purchases may be your only option if you wait until the last minute to start shopping, but starting early enables you to take your time and comparison shop so you can find the best deal. If you find a great gift in a store but want to find it for less money, shopping early allows you to shop around at another store or online to see if it's more affordable elsewhere. Make the most of this extra time, and you're liable to save a substantial amount of money over the course of the season. • Take advantage of early bird offers. Many online retailers want consumers to begin their holiday shopping early, so they offer incentives to shoppers who beat the holiday rush. Such retailers may waive shipping and handling charges or wrap gifts free of charge for shoppers who begin their holiday shopping early in the season. These offers typically disappear once the season hits full swing, so early bird shoppers should take advantage of such offers whenever possible. • Get creative. Starting early may allow some holiday shoppers to skip the process of shopping altogether. Creative men and women with unique skills such as woodworking or making pottery may be able to create their own holiday gifts. Homemade gifts will likely take more time to create, but starting early allows you to go at your own pace while still ensuring your special gift will be ready to go come the holidays. Holiday living made easy A few simple strategies can help you save time and reduce stress this holiday season. (MS) With so much on our plates between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortunately, there are many ways to save time and make the holiday season more manageable. • If you don’t have plastic clips to hang lights around windows and to the eaves of your home, inexpensive clothespins will work just as well. If you’re concerned about the color of the wooden clips, paint them holiday hues before stringing the lights. • Put a bath mat, rugside down and rubber-side up, beneath your Christmas tree stand. This allows you to spin the tree as you hang lights and ornaments without damaging the floor underneath. It also makes it simple to undress the tree once the season is over. Use a tree skirt to hide the mat. • Squeeze artificial tree portions into concrete form tubes. First wrap the tree portions in twine and then slip them into the concrete sleeves. Each tube can be stowed in attic or garage rafters, freeing up precious space. • Use empty squirt bottles to make baking and cooking easier. Pancake and cookie batters can be squirted from the containers for less mess. • Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shopping bag to keep the strands from getting tangled. Hang the bags from a hook in a garage or stack them in a storage bin. • Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights to bannisters. They’re easy to assemble and will not damage the bannisters. • A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in a craft room to neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply pull the length you need from the spool and cut for easy decorating. • Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screws or glue. This prevents spills from reaching the floor while stabilizing the tree. • Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nice change of pace from commercially produced paper or newsprint. • Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand. Pat over fallen pine needles that accumulate around the tree. In hard-to-reach areas, wrap the tape around a broom or a floor sweeper. • When traveling for the holidays, use a brightly colored suitcase or flashy tape to make your suitcase stand out from others at the airport. • Place hardened brown sugar in a baking dish, cover it with a moist paper towel and either microwave it on high for 20-second intervals or place it in a 300 F oven for five minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easier to use the sugar to prepare your favorite holiday cookie recipes. • Save plastic bread ties, which can be used to make tags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can be used to organize decorating components and to keep your place on a roll of tape. • Measure the inside of your picture window and construct a wooden frame to its dimensions. Staple holiday lights to the frame and then easily slip the frame in and out of place each year. • Hang a live wreath or some boughs of evergreen in your home to give it that fresh pine scent if you have an artificial tree. • Color-code storage containers so you can easily find holiday decorations in the attic or basement. • Pack for a holiday excursion using a collapsible clothing storage hanger for closets. Fold clothes on each fabric shelf and then collapse it into your suitcase. When you get to your destination, unfold and hang it in a closet so all of your clothes will be at the ready. Are you better than the people you share the road with? Chances are, you think so. Most Canadians possess unwavering confidence in their abilities behind the wheel. Similarly, they have a general distrust of others. A recent study delved more deeply into drivers' perceptions of one another and themselves. It focused on habits, adherence to the rules of the road, and the commonality of accidents. The findings may surprise you: Not everyone pays attention: Four in 10 drivers admit to occasionally being prone to distraction, though the majority of all those surveyed said they believe others are more distracted than they are. Drivers have heavy right feet: Almost 60 per cent of Canadians admit to not obeying the speed limit. Experiencing an accident is more than likely: Tellingly, the vast majority of respondents feel they drive very well, yet 76 per cent have been in at least one accident since first getting their license. Winter preparedness is a not a big priority: While this country has a famously harsh winter, one in four drivers lack winter tires and one third do not have an emergency safety kit. Naturally, nearly half do not have faith in the winter driving abilities of others. What does all of this mean? On the one hand, it illustrates our misplaced confidence in our own abilities and shows a disturbing lack of trust. However, it also highlights the importance of taking precautions. While we can't entirely predict what will happen on the road, there are ways to safeguard ourselves. Drivers can do simple things better, such as obeying speed limits, using winter tires and packing emergency roadside kits, and of course making sure that our automobile insurance is as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible. Some people view the holiday season as their chance to go all out with regard to decorating their homes with an abundance of lights, inflatable lawn ornaments and maybe even some mechanical figures. While these decorations certainly may be symbols of the season, it’s easy to forget just how much energy and resources they consume. A typical strand of lights uses around 300 watts of electricity. Multiply those figures by the dozens of strings of lights people use and it’s easy to see how quickly energy usage can add up. In addition to lights, lit candles, animated dolls, wreaths, trees, and scores of imported ornaments contribute to the energy consumption per household. Even so, environmentally conscious individuals need not skip the holiday décor and entertaining. Fortunately, there are various ways to be energy efficient with holiday décor this season. • Switch to LED lights. LED lights consume a fraction of the energy traditional incandescent bulbs do.While a standard string of 50 lights consumes 300 watts, LED sets only consume four watts. This not only saves energy, but also considerable amounts of money over the course of the holiday season. • Use fiber-optic decorations. Fiber optic items are lit by one light. The illumination carries through the fiber optic cables to the entire decoration. • Use a power strip and timer. Plug decorations into a power strip (be sure to follow the recommended power load for safety) and hook everything up to a timer so lights are not on when no one can see them. • Check light strands. Always inspect lights for frayed wires and any damage. Frayed lights are less efficient and pose a considerable safety risk. • Enhance decorations. Use mirrors and reflective ornaments to give the appearance of more lights without actually adding more. • Turn off ambient lighting. Christmas tree lights or the lights framing a picture window should be sufficient to light up a room. Keep lamps and overhead lighting off while the tree is lit to save money and energy. • Lower the thermostat. When entertaining, turn the thermostat down a few degrees. Having extra people in your home will raise the temperature. Similarly, heat generated by the oven and other cooking appliances can warm up a home. Don’t waste energy by keeping the heat turned on high. • Invest in rechargeable batteries. 40 percent of all batteries are purchased during the holiday season. To power those many gifts and devices, use rechargeable batteries which can be used again and again. • Change your cooking practices. Smaller appliances use less energy. Put those toaster ovens, slow cookers and electric fryers to good use. Only use the oven if you are cooking a large meal. • Wait until the dishwasher is full. Pack in the dishes from holiday meals, and only run the dishwasher when it is full. • Reuse items whenever possible. Many items around the house can be put to good use as decorations, holiday servers or gifts. Take inventory of what you have before you go out and purchase new decorations. 108 - 1424 Southview Dr. SE, Medicine Hat 403-526-0216 ONS RATI Watch Out for Our Black DECO ORE Friday specials coming up &M on Friday, Nov 28th Available ONLY @ 2495 $ +GST Washable & Reusable A quiet comfortable night’s sleep BASIC & ADVANCED FOOT CARE • • • • • • • • In the privacy of your own home Foot & Leg Massage Diabetic Foot Care Clip & File Toenails Fungal Nails Ingrown Toenails Calluses, Corns Padding as required For Appointment, Contact: Pam • Licensed LPN 403-928-3666 Reduces: o✔ Snoring o✔ Dry Mouth o✔ Sleep Apnea o✔ Airway Obstruction o✔ Nasal Congestion Without SNOREBEN® blocked nasal passages restrict air which is a major cause of snoring. Some possible reasons why people become Osteoporotic: is a lack of vitamin D and calcium intake and heavy smoking or alcohol intake. Loss of estrogen may cause menopausal women to be at a higher risk but men are not immune to this disease. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, can also decrease the mineralization of your bones. For more specific information, check out www.osteoporosis.ca Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) Bone Mineral Densitometry measures how much calcium and other types of minerals are in an area of your bone. It is pain free and uses low-dose radiation. (Far less than a chest x-ray) Having a BMD annually helps • Diagnose bone loss and osteoporosis • Measures how well osteoporosis medication is working • Predicts your risk of future bone fractures Osteopenia is the condition leading into osteoporosis and the point at which you want to start reversing the demineralization of your bones. Most common areas at risk for fracture are wrist, forearm, hips and lower back, but it can affect other areas as well. Breaking a bone with unknown cause is a reason to have your bone If you have questions or concerns that you may have this life style altering condition, talk to your health care provider and have a BMD scan at your local Diagnostic Imaging Centre. We use the latest Bone Mineral Densitometry technology and our Medical Radiation Technologists are certified by the Inter-National Association ISCD and licensed to practice by ACMDTT. 1854 Southview Drive SE Medicine Hat, AB Normal bone Ostoporosis 403.527.7334 For more information regarding our clinic and exam preparations, visit www.bsaradiology.ca Osteoporosis Osteoporosis treatment may involve medication along with lifestyle change. If you're undergoing osteoporosis treatment, you're taking a step in the right direction for your bone health. But perhaps you have questions about your therapy. Is the medication you're taking the best one for you? How long will you have to take it? Why does your doctor recommend a weekly pill when your friend takes a pill only once a month? Osteoporosis medications lower the chance of fracture, but they don't eliminate all risk of breaking a bone. If you have a fracture while on treatment, your doctor will reassess you to check for other problems that may have contributed to the broken bone. Don't rely entirely on medication as the only treatment for your osteoporosis. These practices also are important: • Exercise. Weight-bearing physical activity and exercises that improve balance and posture can strengthen bones and reduce the chance of a fracture. The more active and fit you are as you age, the less likely you are to fall and break a bone. • Good nutrition. Eat a healthy diet and make certain that you're getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Being underweight or losing a lot of weight unintentionally is associated with poorer bone health and a higher risk of fracture — even if you're taking a bisphosphonate. • Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes speeds up bone loss. • Limit alcohol. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger. www.mayoclinic.org “Do you think Osteoporosis is an OLD person’s disease?” . . . .Think again • The disease can strike at any age • 1 in 4 women over 50 • At least 1 in 8 men over 50 Reverse Your Symptoms Osteoporosis / Osteopenia / Osteo-Arthritis / Fibromyalgia / Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle / Aging of Your Structure / Loss of Strength / Loss of Balance / Loss of Mobility In the same way that muscles get larger with strain, bones adapt under compressing forces.
