President’s Letter
By Mike, K6MKF
Dear Fellow NCDXC Members,
TROMELIN!!! For months, the upcoming
Tromelin 2014 Dxpedition has been looming
just over our horizon, just a few months away
on the DX calendar. Antennas were checked,
improved, checked again, new antennas
were made or purchased, ground rods wirebrushed and in some cases towers and masts
were put up in anticipation of the Tromelin
Dxpedition. I suspect that some new amps
were purchased for Tromelin too. Tromelin
was #8 Most Wanted on Club Log’s list, and
as the start date grew closer, I noticed that
‘Tromelin’ began to work its way into NCDXC
Members’ conversations. “Are you ready for
Tromelin?” “I hope I get Tromelin.” “I really
need Tromelin.”
Then Tromelin was only a few weeks away –
and then, before we knew where the days had gone, it was upon us! As soon as FT4TA went
QRV, the fun, excitement, challenge, craziness and frustrations attendant to a Dxpedition to a
much-needed and sought-after entity broke out on the bands, DX clusters and email reflectors
throughout the DX universe. It was as if FT4TA suddenly appeared as this great gravitational
object that pulled directional antennas, HF signals and DXers’ attention away from everything
else and toward itself. I became fixated on an azimuth of 8 degrees and the beam didn’t move
much from that heading while FT4TA was on the air.
Everybody showed up. Wherever FT4TA was spotted the hoards would descend and the pileups were immense, sometimes 15 to 20, even 30 KHz wide. On a couple of bands the pile-ups
would extend up beyond US band limits and if you tried to get above the pile-up, you ran the
risk of going out of band. Inevitably, a couple of Paddy wagons of DX cops would soon show
up, and like the Keystone Cops of old, they would end up yelling at each other to shut up so
they could shout UP! UP! UP! some more. The Whistlers and the Tuner-Uppers were also well
represented. And if only 1% of a 1000 station pile-up forgot to go Split, then there would be
10 stations calling on FT4TA’s transmit frequency. Members of the Lousy Audio Association
and the Raspy CW Signal Society were also there in force.
And, of course, Editorial Spotting became all the rage. FT4TA spots came through the cluster
with charming epithets attached and among those that can be repeated here are: TODAY NO
SIGNALS WHY??; WHY ONLY NA WHY NOT EU? POOR OPN; CRAZY SPLIT ALL BAND IDIOT!!;
PSE CHANGE OP TO SLOW !!! NO EXPER.; EU DOES DESERVE ONLINE LOG EVERY DAY; - and my
personal favorite: FINITA RADIO PEDISHN !! PIANO PIANO.
Through it all, the FT4TA team just kept cranking out the QSOs and giving lots of ATNOs to the
Deserving.
It was wonderful!
NCDXC Members were very much among the Deserving. 80 of 181 active NCDXC Members
are in the log at FT4TA – that’s 44% of our Members. NCDXC Members made 367 QSOs with
FT4TA, and logged 347 band/mode slots. The average number of bands worked for FT4TA by
NCDXC Members was 3. The average number of band/mode slots worked by NCDXC Members
was 4. 7 Members logged 10 – 17 band/mode slots; 53 Members logged 2 – 9 band/mode
slots; and 20 Members logged a single band/mode slot.
Our Members’ success with FT4TA is due in no small measure to the gentle guidance of their
West Coast Pilot, our own John Miller, K6MM. John’s suggestions helped the FT4TA Team take
advantage of openings to the West Coast and gave a lot of W6 and W7 stations their shot at a
contact. Thank you, John, for all your efforts in support of our Members’ DXing operations.
I have my own Tromelin ‘adventure’ which is recounted in the Secretary’s Corner. It serves to
demonstrate why the NCDXC is such a great Club: its Members!
I look forward to seeing our Members at the November Regular Meeting, which will be held
at Holder’s Country Inn, 998 S De Anza Blvd, San Jose, CA 95129 on Thursday, November 20,
2014 beginning at 5PM. Our program will be “Ground Is A Myth” by Kristen McIntyre, K6WX.
The NCDXC Holiday Luncheon will be at Michael’s at Shoreline, December 13, 2014, 11:00 AM

DXer Profile: Rob LaNoce, AG6RK
How many of us can brag that we worked DXCC with QRP? Just 10 Watts! You really have to be
a true DXer at heart to even attempt the feat. But our V.P. and Chat Postmaster did just that
and did it with an off-set low level dipole. His rig is (was) an Elecraft KX3.
But watch out now, he has put up a SteppIR DB-18 at 50 feet. If that’s not enough,he also has
borrowed a Flex 6300 and soon to own a Flex 6500. His current count is over 100 confirmed
but with the new station additions you can bet he will be racking new DX soon.
It is nice to see new(er) club members contribute to the club by taking an office. More details
on QRZ.

PRESS RELEASE
From: The KP1-5 Project
Re: Navassa (KP1) DXpedition
Dated: 22 October 2014
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has notified the KP1-5 Project that they will be the team to activate Navassa
Island (KP1) in January 2015.
The DXpedition will be a maximum of fourteen days. The exact dates in January will be determined by USFWS
mission requirements and weather windows.
Our experienced team of fifteen is complete and is ready for the challenge. The weeks ahead will be extremely
busy as the team has less than 90 days before the DXpedition comes on the air.
January is the month of minimum bird nesting activity and this is the primary reason USFWS is asking that the
operation be completed during that month. However, the weather is unpredictable in January and because Navassa is surrounded by cliffs, this may preclude a safe landing by boat. For safety reasons and in order to maximize our time on the Island and on the air, a helicopter operation is planned. Navassa is over 100 miles (160
Page 10
km) from the nearest helicopter staging point and as many as ten round trips will be required at the beginning
and end of the operation. Obviously, this means that there will be a significant cost for activating this #1 ranked
DXCC entity.
In the next few weeks, we be working with USFWS and as details firm up, we will issue periodic press releases.
Check our webpage, http://www.kp1-5.com for more details of the operation and how you may financially support this DXpedition.
The KP1-5 Project team has committed to fund 50% of the total costs. We are hopeful the DX community at
large will fund the remainder.
for The KP1-5 Project,
Bob Allphin, K4UEE, President
Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, Vice-president
Mike Thomas, NA5U, Secretary

How To Update Your DX Ladder Numbers
• For all DXCC and band counts, only include QSOs for which you already have LOTW-QSLs
or QSL cards.
• Entries in the ClubLog NCDXC DXCC League are imported into DX Ladder if the member is
registered at http://www.clublog.org and member log is uploaded at least once per year.
• Members who prefer not to use ClubLog: please use the web form at:
www.ncdxc.org/pages/dxladder.html . Band information is helpful but not required.
• “DXCC” column includes current and deleted entities, the “Curr” column has current only.
• The Chal (Challenge) count is the sum of the current entity band counts (no deleted entities) and is automatically calculated in the DX Ladder spreadsheet.
• The new “Chg” columns indicate increases in the previous columns compared to last
month. Thank you to Jonathan W6GX for this idea!
• Participation in DX Ladder is available to NCDXC members only.

home projects. Most of all, Bruno was very proud of his family. During his retirement, he
loved spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren. Bruno is survived by his
son and daughter and their families. He was pre-deceased by his wife.
Bruno was a ham operator since 1937 and had 18 callsigns from 24 different countries.
He first joined NCDXC in 1979, which brought him a lot of joy and long lasting friendships.
