Surviving Separation Anxiety
My office happens to back up to a children’s
classroom with poorly soundproofed walls, so I
sometimes hear the cries of children when their
moms or dads leave the classroom. It is difficult to
hear, and I know as a parent it is difficult to watch
children deal with separation anxiety.
by Karen Kellar, Ed.D.
Early Childhood
Family Services
Manager
It is important to remember that separation anxiety
is a normal reaction for children who have formed
strong relationships with parents and other adults.
This means you have done a great job forming
healthy attachments to your children! Crying,
tantrums and clinginess are appropriate reactions
to separation. Every child is different, so his or her
reaction will be different. Some get so upset that
they become physically ill, while others become
clingy. Some children will not accept physical
comfort from anyone but their parents.
Separation anxiety can occur and reoccur at
any age. On average, separation anxiety peaks
around 6 to 9 months, 18 months and 2 years. It
begins when children start developing “object
permanence,” which means they understand that
mom and dad still exist, even though they are not
physically present. Occasionally children will also
have an anxious period around 4 or 5 years of age,
when they start preschool or kindergarten. For
some children, separation anxiety lasts a very short
time (1 to 2 weeks), and for others it lasts a long
time (10 to12 weeks or more).
One of the biggest mistakes parents make about
separation is that they stop trying to separate. It is
a learned process that takes time. Children need
to practice the experience before they can learn
to cope. Your fears or concerns for your children’s
well-being can increase and prolong his or her fear
of being away from you. If you are feeling guilty
about taking time for yourself or going to work, it
will probably be difficult to leave. You may also be
feeling overwhelmed by the amount of attention
your children need during this time. It is important
for you to reconcile these feelings and accept that
it is beneficial for you and your children to be away
from each other. Any inconsistency in your words
and actions can make it a more difficult experience.
Here are our tried-and-true tips to help you and
your children through separation anxiety:
• Ideally, you should try to leave your children when
they are rested and fed. Security items such as
pacifiers, blankets, stuffed animals or favorite toys
should be available to them.
• Get your children involved in an activity before
you leave.
• Always say good-bye to your children. This is
respectful and helps them develop a sense of
trust and security in you and in the situation.
Avoid giving them mixed messages by saying
good-bye and then not leaving. It is best to
leave promptly.
• Realize that it is okay for your children to be
upset! Take fears seriously, they are real. Stay
calm, but reflect your children’s feelings: “You
would like me to stay. You are sad to see me go. I
will tell you before I go, and I will be back.”
• Remember that even a short separation should
be viewed as a success. Each separation is
a valuable learning experience and you are
all gaining skills to cope with this period of
development. Separation is sometimes harder on
the parent than the children!
• If your children are struggling with separation, it
is wise to separate for short periods of time, but
more frequently.
• To get through this stage, you need to behave
as you normally would and not give in. Children
will easily pick up on any weakness and use it to
avoid having to separate. If you begin to leave
and keep coming back, you are only confusing
your children and prolonging the learning
process.
ECFE is a great place to practice separation. We
have experienced staff and an ideal children’s
room environment with a one-way window from the
parent room to observe your children’s progress.
Most parents in ECFE classes will tell you that their
children had separation anxiety, but that it passes.
Our goal is for all family members to have a positive
experience. We will work with you to develop a plan
that supports both you and your children.
• Choosing caregivers who are willing to spend
the time comforting your children and distracting
them with other things is an important component
of a successful separation. It helps if he or she is
a familiar person in your family’s life. To help your
children become familiar with the caregiver and
the setting, it is a good idea to spend time with
them when you are present.
• Tell your children what is going to happen.
Prepare them for the separation by talking about
where you will be, when you will return and who
will be with them. Use the same words each time
so they learn the ritual of leaving.

Your Family Compass
The parenting journey can be filled with some amazing moments, as well as
some bumps in the road. Knowing your destination and having a plan can
help you stay on course. This class, based on the book Your Family Compass
by Jenny Hanlon, will provide you with tools, such as writing a family mission
statement to help you accomplish your parenting goals. Children will explore
our early childhood activities in the classroom designed just for them, while
meeting new friends.
Each of us is born with a distinctive temperament.
If you have a youngster who is strong-willed, easily
stressed by new situations and super-sensitive
about his or her environment, you could have a
child we call “spirited.” These kids are “more”

Family School
Do you want to learn English? Do you have young children at home during the day? Family
School, a literacy program for English language learners, has four important parts: a
preschool program for children ages three to five, time for parents and children to play
and learn together, parent education and adult education. Family School meets
Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 11:45am. Please call 952-431-8316 for
more information. Family School is sponsored by Adult Basic Education and
Early Childhood Family Education in School District 196.
Early Childhood Screening
The screening staff looks forward to welcoming you at the District
Service Center in Rosemount! If your child is three and a half years old
and you currently receive school district mailings, you will automatically be
sent a letter from our program inviting you and your child to an early
childhood screening.
Call Early Childhood Screening if
• you are new to the district,
• your child is almost four years old and has NOT
been screened,
• you have concerns about a preschool child,
• you need more information about the screening process, or
• your child is entering kindergarten in the fall of 2015 and has not been screened.
You can call the Early Childhood Screening office, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm
at 651-423-7899.

Advisory Council and Foundation for ECFS
The Advisory Council supports Early Childhood Family Services by contributing
ideas on programming and policies. Volunteer members are involved in our
communities and relate to how ECFS can be relevant to all district families. In
addition to a monthly group meeting, committee work is continuing in the areas
of fundraising, class planning and content, budget, legislative communication
and Family School. This fall, the Square One Art fundraiser provided families
with keepsakes created from their children’s artwork. On February 14, 2015,
families are invited to the annual Valentine Party featuring a concert by Duke
Otherwise. This popular event is fun for the whole family and helps support
future programs. Input into ECFS programming is appreciated and receives the
full consideration of the Advisory Council.
