T
he year has been another busy one at
SHAID. Since January, the shelter has
taken in 212 stray, abandoned, homeless or unwanted felines. SHAID endeavours
to help by placing as many as possible into
responsible and caring homes.
SHAID also strives to educate the public in
responsible pet ownership and promotes the
spaying and neutering of pets, and therefore
would like to take this opportunity to provide
SHAID’s policy on the intake of felines.
Lately, staff has noticed an increase in felines being brought to SHAID with the expectation that they can be dropped off and that
the shelter will take them in. Staff only wishes it could be this easy. Unfortunately, like
all other rescues and shelters in Nova Scotia
and beyond, there are long waiting lists.
SHAID’s waiting list ranges
from 50 to 150 felines, on average. We would absolutely love
to take every cat and kitten
that comes through the doors,
and we eventually can, but it
takes time, patience and understanding. If you haven’t called and had your
name added to our wait list, then you will be
turned away if there is no space available,
whether you have a stray or unwanted cat or
kitten.
At SHAID, we have an intake process to
follow, which includes the following: we only
take new cats or kittens if space is available
in the quarantine room; and once space becomes available, we call those who are registered on our waiting list.
These kind folks care for the cat or kitten
during the wait and sometimes it can take
a long time. SHAID is so thankful to people
who have cared for a feline that is not theirs
with love and kindness.
So, what is the quarantine room, you
might be asking? It is a room for new arrivals to the shelter and only staff are permitted
to enter. Calls are made from our wait list,
for up to 15 felines, and they all arrive within
a few days. The room is then closed the same
day the last cat or kitten arrives, which
means no new additions for a two-week period. For the safety of these new cats and kittens and our existing residents they are confined to this room for the quarantine period.
During this period, they are examined by our
vet, and tested for feline leukemia, spayed or
neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and treated
for fleas. This also provides an opportunity
for staff to get to know their personalities,
which helps potential adopters find the best
match for their home and family. After the
two weeks have passed, providing all cat
and kittens are healthy and we have enough
empty cages, the cats and kittens are then

moved to the general rooms for adoption.
You might have visited SHAID, noticed
several empty cages, and wondered why staff
told you the shelter was full. This would be
an indication that there have recently been
adoptions. HOORAY! These cages are now
waiting for the cats and kittens that have
been in the quarantine room for two weeks.
The shelter never adds unquarantined cats
or kittens to the general adoption rooms.
This is not done for the simple fact that we
don’t risk placing sick or unhealthy felines
in with healthy felines, as this could cause
every cat to become sick.
Once the quarantine room is empty, staff
begin a four-to-six-day cleaning process to ensure that it is disinfected from top to bottom
and it is ready for the next group of cats and
kittens that have been waiting.
This cycle never stops. So please
understand when staff explains
they are unable to accept any
cats at that time of your visit.
In fact, it breaks their hearts on
a daily basis to say there is no
room. SHAID asks that you be patient, and
understanding as this is a difficult position
staff are placed in and they are unable to
change the process. We are a small Shelter
that does all it can to help as many as it can.
A few more points we felt may be of interest:
SHAID charges a fee for relinquishing any
owned cat, kitten, dog or puppy; SHAID does
NOT take feral cats or kittens as they cannot
be cared for and they are unadoptable; and it
does offer Trap and Neuter (TNR) to anyone
local wanting to care for feral cats or kittens.
SHAID is non-profit and cannot reimburse
people’s vet bills, but we do offer the Myrtle
Quigley program to help with spay or neutering. This is only for owned pets of local
people that cannot afford to pay the full cost.
SHAID calls in cats and kittens on entry
waiting lists in the order of urgency, which
means strays are first and owned cats are
typically last. SHAID understands there are
emergencies, but we ask that good planning
in situations such as moving you should call
well in advance, as this may not be considered an emergency. We certainly understand
that not all apartments and rental properties
accept pets, but they are part of your family.
Staff invites you to drop into SHAID or
call if you have any questions. As always,
we thank everyone for their kindness, their
support, and their understanding and SHAID
will endeavour to continue helping as many
animals in distress as possible.

If you are eligible
to
vote
in
a
Canadian election,
then it’s also your
democratic
right
to be on the ballot
as
a
candidate.
There are only a
few exceptions.
a group of people that share a common vision about how
the country should work, and work to achieve that vision
by offering candidates for public office.
IN canada there are four national parties that are
represented in the house of commons.
You can run under the banner
of a political party, or as an
independent.
To run under a party’s banner
in a riding, you must win
the support of local party
members in a mini-election,
called a nomination meeting
Before this happens you can
try to convince party members
to support you and invite
family and friends who aren’t
yet a part of the party to join
so they can vote for you on
nomination night.
Whether you’re an independent
or aligned with a political party,
you’ll eventually need to file
your nomination papers with
enough signatures of people
who live in your riding and think
you should run, along with a
$1000 deposit.
No big deal,
right?
Independent
candidates
don’t have to go through
the
nomination
process
that party candidates do.
However, while parties can
nominate their candidates,
raise money and begin their
official campaign as soon as
the previous election is over,
independent
candidates
must wait until the election
is called in order to do all
of those things.
Not so fast: Once a party candidate
is nominated by local party members,
the federal party leader needs to
sign their nomination papers.
So even though local supporters
might have your back, if you rub the
leader the wrong way, you won’t be
the party’s candidate for long, and
another candidate will be found, often
appointed directly by the leader.
Running a winning campaign
requIres
a
platform,
supporters
and
more
money.
We’ll
explore
platforms and organizing
supporters next week.

was free to take what I wanted.
“Oh no. I couldn’t possibly
take them without giving
something,” I suggested, trying to hide my excitement.
“Well,” he pointed,
“If you don’t hurry
up, they’re going to
drive away in that
truck.”
So I ran out and
threw the tables and
a planter in my van,
officially making me a
dumpster diver.
$
I have big plans
for the table legs, but
in the meantime, the
planter was first to
get my attention, mostly because I knew it would be easily
transformed, and because I was
sure if I didn’t do something
quickly, my husband would put it out on
our clean up day.
I sanded it, primed and painted the
metal, and stained the wood (Keith at
Gow’s Home Hardware is so helpful), and
just like that, I had a really cool planter,

While
with it, I’m pretty pleased with my little
find.
’ve always enjoyed taking something
old and, with a little TLC, finding
a new use for it. With fall clean up
underway, I thought I’d share my latest
project, which took less than a couple of
hours and cost $10.
First, it requires a little
background.
I was recently in Canning
watching my son’s hockey
team, and as is always the
case, I had an hour to kill
while he got ready. It was a
blistering cold day, and so
instead of walking, I opted to
drive around town. I picked
up some gorgeous pork chops • Auto
from the local butcher, and
• A/C
then I headed to The Noodle
Guy for the most outrageous
homemade takeout noodles
I’ve ever had, along with
some tiramisu, making for
a spectacular dinner that
evening.
While driving around, I happened to
notice a display of tables, frames and
s odds and ends, so I made my way
aother
over to have a look. I was intrigued by
the tables, more so for the legs than the
tables themselves, as they were solid
wood. I then set out to find the owners
to make an offer. The shop owner across
the street said that they weren’t for sale,
that people leave what they no longer

though, is it?
In choice theory, Dr. Glasser
uses the image of a scale (a teetertotter) to help explain how we
behave. One side holds our internal sense of what we want (he
calls that our quality world.) The
other side holds our perception of
what’s happening.
When we perceive that what we
have pretty much matches what we
want, the teeter-totter is balanced.
We feel satisfied.
However, when we perceive an
event as “not what we want,” our
teeter-totter gets out of balance
and we feel a quick jolt of pain.
Reality
Then what?
Sisters Polly and Paula are
headed to the family picnic, each
with their delicious seafood chowder. They fill
their pots to the brim and place them in their
vehicles.
On the way, in a remarkable coincidence
(found only in columns) both Paula and Polly
needed to stop suddenly. The pots tipped, the
chowder spilled.
Instantly, both Paula and Polly feel that jolt
of pain. What now?
Polly carefully turns around and heads
back home. She cleans out the vehicle and sees
that the spill isn’t as bad as it had first appeared. She salvages the chowder that didn’t
spill, fastens the pot more securely, and heads
back. She’s a little late, there’s less chowder
than planned, but she has a good laugh telling
the story and a good time with her family.
When Paula’s chowder spills, she’s furious.
“Why does this always happen to me?,” she
thinks, stomping on the gas. The pot then tips
backward and sends the rest of the chowder
flying. All the way home, she fumes about this
and seemingly every other unpleasant event
she’s ever experienced. She throws the pot in
the trash, tosses her best towels over the mess,
stops at the store and overpays for
a platter of stale party snacks. Now
she’s mad, broke, and that chowder
smell in the car isn’t getting more
appetizing.
When Paula gets to the party, all
she talks about is how bad things
always happen to her. Her friends
commiserate, but the conversation
isn’t fun for anyone.
Given that Paula and Polly have
similar lives and both had the same
negative event, what’s the difference?
Polly chooses to view unpleasant
incidents as isolated events in a funCheck
damentally satisfying life. She concentrates on the positives in her life
and works on what she can control.
She sees herself as resilient and life events as
manageable.
Paula, on the other hand, chooses to view
any unpleasant incident as evidence of neverending negatives — one bad thing after another. In response to even the tiniest event,
she dives back into a familiar rut — rehashing
past negative events and continuously adding
new ones to the collection.
Does it help Paula to connect all those bad
events that have happened over the years,
with different people and under different circumstances? Or does it harm her? What do
you think? Let me know at [email protected] or by mail c/o Lighthouse Log.
To your choices!
