FM United Way sees growth at new home
Hopes to raise
$190,000 for
next year
JEFF HUNT
[email protected]
The Fort Madison United
Way is in the process of
spreading its wings. According to United Way Director
Sarah Crabtree, now that
the Idol Rashid Memorial
Building is inhabited by the
organization, the
United Way is
able to expand.
Crabtree said
the United Way
went to the city to
take advantage of
Crabtree
the empty building. The United
Way made a proposal in
March to the Fort Madison
City Council that would use
the vacant Idol Rashid Memorial Building, located at 3421
Ave. L in Fort Madison, as a
United Way Resource Center.
The building was to house
the new Community Service
Food Pantry and various
other agency satellite offices.
The proposal was approved
and the lease was signed with
a starting date of June 1. It includes a provision for $1 per
month rent for a 5-year term
to ensure that the projects
have plenty of time to develop
and have measurable returns.
Utilities and insurance will
be split between the organizations using the center.
“The resource center will
soon be a one-stop destination for referrals and services that are covered by the
United Way partner agencies
and also state, county, and
local assistance programs,”
Crabtree said. “In addition to
those resources, the location
will have classes such as a
series of fresh food preparation classes and gardening
classes.”
The United Way will use
the space to implement several community programs.
They include the Food

Systems Initiative, Reading,
Mentoring, Tutoring Initiative, Room in a Box, and the
Backpack Program as well as
the continuation of the Community Services Directory
Project and Family Wise Prescription Cards. Each of the
new initiatives is designed
to increase volunteerism and
awareness of the United Way
projects to the general public
while targeting a specific
need in the community.
FOOD SYSTEMS INITIATIVE
According to Crabtree,
Lee County is ranked 99 of
99 counties for health factors such as food security.
The unemployment rates
coupled with a lack of fresh
foods has led to an environment of food insecurity that
is threatening the health and
wellbeing of county citizens. Crabtree said the Fort
Madison Area United Way is
working with the Lee County
Health Department to aid in
the implementation of a pilot
food systems project that
will be a model for the state
of Iowa. They, along with
many other service groups,
corporations, and agencies,
can improve the quality and
quantity of fresh foods available to citizens and reduce
the food insecurity levels in
the county.
The first step in the process
was to restructure the food
pantry system in Fort Madison. The old location at 510 N.
9th street was very small and
lacked equipment and space
to accommodate the county’s
growing need for food. The
new Idol Rashid Memorial
Building is handicap accessible, has plenty of space,
and is highly visible from the
highway. The Community
Services Food Pantry Board
of Directors will continue to
be the primary governance
for the pantry. They will be
a subleasee in the resource
center.
There were several items
needed as an initial investment in the restructuring
process. Refrigeration was a
major issue with providing
fresh foods. The new facility
has multiple refrigeration
and freezing units to maximize the benefit of fresh food
distribution. The refrigera-
tion units make it easier to
distribute dairy products.
Shelving units were needed to
set up the dry goods portion
of the pantry. A computer
system with an inventory
system was important for
tracking results.
“We’re in Phase I of getting
the resource center going,”
Crabtree said. “The most
important thing was to get
the food pantry going. It’s up
and going and I’ll be picking
up the computer systems next
week. It will all be automated.”
READING, MENTORING,
TUTORING INITIATIVE
Crabtree said the new facility will also house a reading,
mentoring, tutoring program.
“The back section on this
side of the building will be
used for this,” Crabtree said.
“We are going to target third
graders and match them up
with mentors to give them
another person who has a
vested interest in their success.”
Program volunteers will be
matched with a student that
are committed to a specific

said.
“The adult volunteer follows the students’ progress
and continues to mentor
the student for two or three
years, depending on the needs
of the student.”
Crabtree said United Way
is approaching the Fort Madison School District to implement the program and gain
knowledge of students who
might benefit from the additional help. She said not only
will this program help the
child learn, but also provide
a positive role model that is
consistently involved in their
learning process.
Also, Big Brothers Big Sisters is opening a Fort Madison location in the UWRC and
many of the mentors will be
involved in both programs.
“We’re raising money
right now to get the rest of
the things we need to get the
program here,” Crabtree said.
“Big Brothers/Big Sisters is
hoping to be in here sometime this month.
Crabtree said the idea is to
allow the program to have a
presence in Fort Madison.
ROOM IN A BOX PROGRAM
“The United Way and local
service groups gather new
or like new items to replace
items lost in house fires,”
Crabtree said. “The items
were kept in various locations around Fort Madison,
but the new United Way
Resource Center has space
to keep the storage bins and
provide a good location for
donations to the project and
pickup of items.”
Crabtree said another thing
being added to the room in
a box is a community baby
shower for essential new
baby items.
“The items are collected
at the center and ready in a
box for a needy new mother,”
Crabtree said.

It’s truck day at the Food Pantry in Fort Madison. Volunteers work to
unload a delivery. Paul Menke, center, loads cases while Richard Pieper,

shipment.
CENTER: If it receives a federal grant,
FM United Way may take over RSVP service
(Continued from Page 1)
zations United Way volunteers pack
backpacks for needy children to take
home on weekends. Meals and snacks
are in the backpack for kids who
may rely on the free lunch and snack
programs at school for their main
nutritional source.
“Volunteers will organize and fill
the backpacks at the center and deliver them to the classrooms for easy
pickup at the end of the school week
by students,” Crabtree said. “The
backpacks will be returned on Monday mornings for refill by weeks end.”
Crabtree said the community directory will also be in the backpack with
any additional resources for parents
that are available.
Crabtree said the majority of
financial burden for the United Way
Resource Center involves the Food
Pantry and Tutoring area. The other
programs will add benefit to the community with very little up-front cost.
The resource center will be a place
for volunteers to gather and tackle
volunteer projects that are needed in
our community while decreasing risk
factors as mentioned above.
According to Crabtree, although
much of the United Way offices are
complete already, the entire facility
will not be done until November of
2015.
DOLLARS AND CENTS
Crabtree said she is currently in
the process of fundraising.
“I am trying to raise money for next
year’s budget,” Crabtree said. “Our
goal is $190,000.”
Crabtree said last year she was able
to raise $179,000, so she sees $190,000
is realistic. Crabtree said already she
has raised $70,000, and that is without
the response of large businesses.
“I still have several big campaigns
out, so I think we are going to reach
it,” Crabtree said.
Crabtree said she knows many businesses cannot afford large donations
but want to help, so she has come up
with ideas to help.
“I am thinking about asking some
places to sponsor up on a monthly
basis by paying our utility bills,”
Crabtree said. “We would get a sign
and put their name on it thanking
them each month.”
Crabtree said 99 percent of the
money raised stays in Fort Madison.
Crabtree said there is a chance that
the United Way might take over Retired and Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP), and in that case the program
will be moved to the Rashid building.
“We have applied for the federal
grant to finance it,” Crabtree said. “If
we can’t get the grant, we won’t be
able to take over the program.”
They landed at Churchville at the
mouth of the DMR. They hired a carriage to go up to Sweet Home staying
there for some time.
When Caroline tried to hire a
wagon to take them home none was
available. Her children were sick
with the ague and fever. A stranger
was going to the Indian town so Caroline sent a note to the clerk of their
trading house to hire some squaws
to come after them. She bought
crackers for the children and flour
and meat. By this time Caroline was
sick, again.
They started up the DMR. Again
they stayed overnight at homes of
white settlers. They had a tedious
journey. It rained every day and
she and her children were quite
sick. Their food supply was running low. One day on the river the
squaws saw a deer swimming. They
caught the deer by its horns and held
its head under the water. Caroline
remarked, “We all had a feast that
night.”
The Indians sold their lands for
goods and money and stored their
goods in trading houses until they
could divide them. About 400 Indians met at the trading houses and
then sent the young men down river
to the whisky trader. Chief Keokuk
and his son were part of that group.
While they were gone to Washington, the chief’s son died, he said
before he died he was bewitched by
an old squaw, a crooked old squaw,
he said she turned into a little dog
every night and came to him so in
their drunken frolic the old chief
painted himself red as he could be
all over, he came to my window and
said he wanted bullets and caps. He
was so drunk he could not put the
caps on the lock.
Apparently, Keokuk shot the old
squaw. The old squaw’s son tried to
kill Keokuk. He tried to shoot him at
Caroline’s house but she would not
allow him. Keokuk bargained with
the son and gave him a horse one every five years if he would not shoot
him. In part due to the bargain and
in part to land sales and in part for
grieving for his mother a drunken
frolic took place.
Caroline relates that her house
was full of drunken Indians and
half-drunken Indians including the
chief. They were on the roof dancing which caused the chimney to fall
in. She could not get them to leave;
they only laughed at her. She sent
for William who was attending court
in Missouri to come home to clear
out the Indians. Caroline also cared
for the Indian children who came to
her house for food and shelter while
their parents celebrated. The above
events apparently occurred in 1838.
In the spring, William took command of the steamboat, Pavilion.
They went to St. Louis. Caroline
was afraid that her children might
fall off the boat or into the paddlewheel so she disembarked and went
home. Their house was built close
to an Indian burial ground. While
eating dinner one evening with the
doors open their dog came in with an
Indian arm and a hand. The Indians
wrapped it in calico and returned it.
In the fall, William (Captain
Phelps) returned home. The men
went up river to build trading
houses. Also, the Indians moved
since they sold their land. On the
4th of July Caroline had a feast for
the women and children. Cannon
fire signaled to the Indians to the
preparation of the feast. Beef was
boiled in large kettles; they fried onehalf barrel of flour in grease. Also,
prepared for the feast was one-half
pound of crackers, 50 pounds sugar
and 10 pounds coffee.
Tragedy struck in February 1840.
A fire started in the storage houses
at about 3 a.m. The children were
awakened and taken to safety by
Caroline. Then she returned to the
house to help William to salvage
personal papers and items. (She
made this cabin her home). Eighteen kegs of powder had been put in
a middle room by the clerk (temporarily) without William’s consent
and twelve kegs were stored above
the store.
The ensuing explosion killed many
workers and guests; mangled bodies were scattered about. Caroline
was thrown into the fireplace with a
gun, a stand and a trundle bedstead.
Their pickled pork was scattered for
two miles, goods were thrown upon
the river on the ice. Piles of calico
were burning next day and the flour
and meat burned eleven days.

Living in Iowa in the winter can be downright
tough. But for some the cold nights can seem unbearable. There were some warm hearts willing
to give some much needed relief from the cold this
year.
The winterization coupon program initiated by
Fort Madison Area United Way will be providing
$20 coupons for “do it yourself” materials to weatherproof their windows. Like any good program,
there are several groups and businesses working
together to ensure the program’s success.
The Potowonok Circle of King’s Daughters
donated $500 toward the project. The United Way
also set aside funding to help 50 families this year.
Kempker’s True Value and Building Materials will
help clients with choosing the right materials for
their needs. They will also process the vouchers
with a 20 percent discount on all the merchandise.
These discounts make the donated funds stretch
much farther. Dolly Stancil at Community Action
is a valuable member of the team by distributing
the vouchers and taking referrals for the program.
If you know someone who might need a referral –
call Sarah at the United Way office at 372-3585 or
Dolly at Community Action 372-4471.

Just in Time for.......
What Do Your Gift-Giving Habits Say About You?
Ah, the holidays. That time when we express ourselves not in our words or
our actions but in our shopping chops. We consulted a gift-giving expert to
decipher the hidden meaning behind what we give — or don’t give — to
those we love.
Of course, it could also mean that your BFF is simply a bit selfish — and
was giving you the gift she’d like to receive. “Sometimes people choose gifts
that they quite like themselves, and it gets a bit egocentric. We think that
because we like it, other people will too,” says Pine.
I have no idea what to give my significant other. Does that mean I don’t
know my partner well enough?
Actually, it’s the opposite. You can’t pick a gift because you’re anxious
over finding the right one. “The more the relationship matters, the more we
worry about getting it right,” says Karen Pine, a professor of psychology at
the University of Hertfordshire in Hertfordshire, England, who actually
studies the psychology behind giving gifts. “The more we value the other
person, the more want the gift to be an accurate reflection of the strength of
our feelings towards them. And what we don’t want to do is give them a gift
that’s a poor sympbol of the importance of the relationship.”
Every year, I take a lot of time picking gifts I think my family members
will like. But they always appear disappointed. What does that say about
our relationship?
You mean well, and you probably do know what they like, but you may be
going over the top. “Sometimes we pick something too personal,” says Pine.
“We pick a certain category. For example, Aunt Mary loves big earrings and
she loves cats. So, you get her big earrings with cats on them. But she doesn’t
actually want that. We put the wrong things together.”
My best friend gave me a gift I hate. Do my friends not know me as well
as I think they do?
We think someone is our closest pal, and then they gift us with something
that makes no sense. What went wrong? According to Pine, there may be a
disconnect in how we think they see the relationship. “The way we think
someone sees us is not necessarily how they see us. That becomes manifest in
the gifts that they give us sometimes. That can be a bit of a surprise, and
sometimes not a very good one,” says Pine. And maybe warrants some more
together time to figure things out.
My romantic partner never gives me sentimental gifts, like jewelry. Does
that mean he’s not committed?
Gender differences — big surprise — play a big role in gift giving, which
is something Pine has studied extensively. Women tend to be more
sentimental about giving gifts and attach a lot of meaning to specific presents.
Men, on the other hand, tend to desire and give gifts that are usable,
pragmatic and functional. “Oftentimes, for example, a man finds it easier to
buy an iPad for his wife. If he thought she wanted a piece of jewelry, he
would have no idea how to choose it. He doesn’t necessarily know what type
she likes. It puts him in a retail experience that’s awkward and unfamiliar to

......the Gift Giving Season!
him. But he does know how to buy a gadget,” says Pine. So don’t read too
much into that new microwave that’s under your tree this year.
signs that can tip you off. Pine videotaped several people opening gifts,
and asked them afterward whether or not they liked them. She and her
team then studied what characteristics were common among people who
appreciated their gifts and those who do not. A giveaway for a dud, for
instance, might be lack of eye contact with you as they’re praising the
gift. “Since our faces often betray our true feelings, we don’t want to have
sustained eye contact with the giver because we might disclose how we
really feel,” says Pine. When a gift is unpopular, the recipient also tends
to put it back in the box, or start re-wrapping it. (You can’t start too soon
readying things to return.)
If a person really likes a gift, they make eye contact, and will interact
with the present. “They may smell it, or hold it up against them if it’s
something like a scarf. When they truly love it, they will leave it out on
show,” says Pine.
I only buy gift cards. What’s the big deal?
It depends on who you’re giving them to. Once again, gender
differences tend to come into play when it comes to whether gift cards are
appreciated, as well as who is giving them. A woman is less likely to
appreciate a gift card from a romantic partner because it lacks the
sentimental factor. Pine has seen this play out in her research. “A woman
recently said she desperately wanted her husband to buy her jewelry, so
she hinted she wanted jewelry from him. When the big day came, he gave
her a voucher for a jewelry store. He was being practical, and thinking, ‘I
don’t know what to buy, but you can buy what you want yourself,’” says
Pine. “For her, that completely missed the point. It was the sentimental
value that she wanted.”
How do some people always pick the perfect present? Are they just
better people?
A person who always gets it right is very uncommon, so don’t beat
yourself up about it. “In my research, just about everyone gets a present
that they don’t like. Even people who know them well will sometimes get
it wrong. The person that always gets it right is a rare being,” says Pine.
“They likely spend an awful lot of time doing the research and looking
around. I don’t think they get it right by charm, I think a lot of work goes
into it.” Sometimes, such people are also very intuitive, and have a greater
emotional intelligence, making it easy for them to pick up on when
someone drops a hint.

What does re-gifting say about me?
Basically, it says exactly what you think it does — that you don’t care.
If you don’t get away with it, you’re putting a relationship at risk. “Being
a recipient of a gift that someone is just passing on to you violates all the
laws of gift giving, especially that you should make an effort and choose a
gift for someone,” says Pine. “If you’re discovered, the person receiving
the gift usually feels quite hurt and insulted.”
I can never tell when people don’t like my gifts. Am I out of touch?
No – it’s really hard to tell when someone truly doesn’t like a gift,
especially if they pretend that they do. But there are some body language

Dog owners live longer!
We’ve all known, or at least
suspected, this for a long time.
But now it’s official. According
to LabDoor.com, an independent research and information
company dedicated to educating
people about their health, dog
owners reap amazing cardiovascular benefits, including lower
cholesterol, reduced blood pressure; and have a lower likelihood
of visiting the doctor. Dogs are
a great stress reliever. Children
who have dogs are more active,
and become more nurturing
adults. Dogs enhance physical
and mental health, and can help
speed up recovery from illness.
For the full report, go to www.
labdoor.com/article/the-healthbenefits-of-mans-best-friend.
Well, now that it’s official, I
don’t have to be embarrassed
about picking Buddy up and hugging him just for the pleasure of
a hug, kissing him on the nose,
or letting him sleep with me.
Buddy is a bona fide healthcare
giver. Oh, and one more thing,
it’s okay to tell your pets that you
love them.
I’m thankful for the day I was
wandering around and “accidentally bumped into Buddy” at
Wayland’s animal shelter. We
have been thick as thieves ever
since. He watches from the
window when I leave, is waiting for me at the door, turning
circles, when I come home, and
pesters me endlessly when it’s
time for his walk. In fact, that’s
the reason I haven’t fenced the
back yard, it gives me an excuse
for walking Buddy—twice a day.
That’s one of the big reasons for
the health benefits of a dog—it
gets humans walking.
One day I
EMPTY NEST thought I’d lost
ole Buddy Boy.
We were on our
usual morning
walk using the
12-foot retractable leash. I
laid the leash
down to feed
the squirrels
and fill the bird
bath. Buddy
Curt Swarm
usually sits tight
when I do this. I turned to pick
up his leash, and he was gone!
I searched, and hollered, and
flagged down motorists to ask if
they’d seen a little black dog with
a white chest. None had. Even
though it was chilly, I broke out
in a cold sweat, a deep-gut panic
setting in. Had he been hit by a
car? Had someone picked him
up? He’ll jump into anyone’s car.
I cursed myself for my negligence, a vision setting in of life
without Buddy. I prayed and hollered. I turned around, and there
he was! He was sitting a few feet
behind me, his chest stuck out.
A fragment of the leash hung
from his neck. It must have gotten caught, and he had chewed
through it! I picked him up and
we went home, ole Buddy Boy
washing my ears the whole way.
He often sleeps on his back during the day, feet up in the air, his
brown eyes following me around
the room. “I’m the cute dog, you
can rub my belly.” A ritual: I
usually do 30 minutes of aerobic
exercise in the morning, either
on the treadmill or elliptical machine. To keep Mr. Buddy Boy
from chewing up things, like my
shoes, while I’m in the basement
exercising, I give him a chew
treat. And he anticipates it. I
have taken to hiding the chew
treat in my pocket while I’m
putting on my shoes. He sniffs it
out, and tries to pull it out of my
pocket. Cute!
If you want to please someone,
be nice to their dog. And, a study
has shown, if you want to appear
more friendly in a photo, include
your dog.
I was about to say that Buddy
Boy is loyal to the end. However,
the other day when I was sick
in bed from a reaction to the
pneumonia shot, I was a little
disappointed that ole Buddy
Boy wouldn’t curl up at me feet
and “take care of massa.” He
spent most of the time in a chair
looking out the window. When
the UPS driver came to the door,
Buddy did circles and a belly-up
for him. Most dogs hate the UPS
driver! When the driver left,
Buddy tried to get in the truck
with him. Traitor dog!
But Buddy is everybody’s
buddy. I’ll keep him. And, just
maybe, be healthier for it. Hug a
dog a day.
