students to found and run a school
bank.
All-Ireland Final
Thurles C.B.S. was well represented in
Croke Park this year with no fewer than
eight past pupils involved in the senior
All-Ireland final. There were seven alumni on the Tipperary panel ( James Barry,
Cathal Barrett, Michael Cahill, Lar Corbett, Denis Maher, Padraig Maher and
Ronan Maher) while past pupil, Aidan Fogarty, togged out in the black and amber of Kilkenny. On a national level there are very few schools which could
boast such a high level of involvement in the sport’s most prestigious flagship
event and this involvement is an obvious testament to the strength of hurling in
the school.
 Our under-16 and under-19 basketball teams played their first league
games of the season at home
against Mullingar Community
College. Our under-16 team was
victorious (34-23) but unfortunately our under-19 team was
beaten (31-41) .
 Our junior golfers travelled to
Cahir Park Golf Club to compete in
the East Munster Qualifying Section of the Schools Junior Golf
Competition. The team consisted of
Cian Stakelum, Jack Ryan and
Aaron Quinn and although they
played well they did not progress
to the next phase of the competition.

First Year Hurling Competition
Our first year pupils took part in an annual blitz against teams from The Abbey C.B.S. All of the students
were divided into teams of twelve and in the end the James O Donoghue Perpetual Trophy was presented to
the captain of the winning Thurles team, Patrick Creedon. The school would like to thank Mr Andy Ryan for
his help in organising this event and Mr Pierce Murphy for providing first aid support and presenting the trophy. ‘Well done’ also to the fourth year pupils who managed the teams and refereed and umpired the games.
Almost three hundred fifth and sixth class boys and girls attended
our one day Gaelic Games Promotion Day which was held in Semple Stadium and Dr Morris Park. The day started with a tour of
Semple Stadium before the boys and girls rotated between six different coaching stations, each focusing on some of the key skills of
both football and hurling. Our G.A.A. coaches were ably assisted
on the day by past pupils; Ronan Maher, Pa Bourke, Denis Maher
and Cathal Barrett. The school would like to thank the primary
schools and the pupils’ parents for helping to facilitate this very
successful event.
Blue September
In conjunction with the national ‘Blue September’ campaign our transition year students have been busy raising both awareness and funds to support the fight against men’s cancer. During the month of September fourth
year pupils spoke to each of the class groups about how healthy lifestyles can reduce the risk of cancer in later
life and also informed students about the different types of cancer that affect men. The transition years also
organised a ‘jersey day’ on Friday September 26th, with the proceeds donated to cancer research. To help promote ‘Blue September’ Tipperary captain , Brendan Maher, also visited the school.
Well done to

in class 4T
who with the
help of their
school mates
raised €1095.

in September and the following students were chosen to star on stage: Alex Murphy ( Danny), Dylan Greene ( Kenickie), Fionn McCartan ( Doody ), Daniel
Matthews ( Roger ), Darragh Byrne ( Sonny ), Loughlin Russell ( Eugene ), Jack
Fitzgibbon ( Vince Fontaine ), Gavin Murphy (Johnny Casino ), Diarmuid
Meagher ( Teen Angel ), Anthony Maher ( Mr Lynch) and Darren O Sullivan
( Jock ).

and we know they will produce an amazing show.
Harty Cup
After School Study
Evening study takes place every
Monday to Friday for 2 hours
commencing at 3:55. It is geared
towards providing a formal study
environment and is supervised
by a teacher. Saturday study for
3rd and 6th year students will
also be available later in the
year. This is a 4 hour study period commencing at 9am. For
further information contact Mr.
T. Lloyd.
Our senior hurlers got this year’s Harty campaign off to a
successful start with a convincing victory over St. Flannan’s on a scoreline of 5-26 to 6 points. In our second
group game we drew with West Limerick Colleges on a
scoreline of 1-15 to 3-9. These 3 points and high scoring
difference could prove to be very important in what is an
extremely difficult group with games against Ard Scoil
Ris and Blackwater still to come.
Irish Angus Beef
Congratulations to Kieran Cummins and
Niall Molony 5th Year on receiving their
prizes for the Irish Angus Beef competition. They were presented with their 5
Angus cross calves at this years ploughing championships.
Dean Ryan
Congratulations to our under-16 ½ hurlers on their quarter-final
victory over St. Coleman’s of Fermoy. Played in blustery conditions the game proved to be a very close and exciting affair,
Thurles only progressing after extra-time on a scoreline of 1-20
to 2-15. The C.B.S. will now face Our Lady’s of Templemore
in the semi-final. We wish them the best of luck.
