Academic Profile 2014-2015 Some things are certain Founded in 1900 as Georgia Military Academy, Woodward Academy today taps more than a century of educational wisdom as a co-educational college preparatory school enrolling approximately 2,694 students, grades pre-kindergarten through 12, on two metro Atlanta campuses. As the largest independent school in the continental United States, Woodward offers students from 24 counties and 135 zip codes prolific opportunities to try and triumph, and lends wise, individual guidance at every step. Woodward families from many different backgrounds and faiths join this “intentional neighborhood” where students show deep respect for difference, discover their strengths, and explore complexities together. Because of this more complete approach to education, Woodward graduates, in the end, surpass commonly held definitions of success and arrive confidently at their own self-defined markers of achievement and satisfaction. Two metro Atlanta campuses: PK–12 College Park PK–6 Johns Creek Upper School Faculty: • 132 professional staff • 78% have masters in the US Faculty; 6% have doctorate degrees • 1:11 faculty-to-student ratio • Average tenure – 11 years 17 varsity sports are offered at the Academy. 75 yearly arts performances are part of a wide range of visual art and performing art opportunities. 86 different clubs and organizations provide students with myriad opportunities for involvement in school and community life. Some things are certain ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES AND RECOGNITION ACCREDITATION Woodward is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools. In addition, the school is a member of NAIS, GISA, NACAC, SACAC, CEEB, and ACCIS. SCHOOL CALENDAR The school operates on a two-semester system. Upper School students sit for comprehensive exams at the end of each term. The school day is divided into six 50-minute class periods. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM For the Class of 2015, which consists of 260 students, NMSQT recognized 11 students as National Merit Semifinalists, 20 Commended, 4 National Achievement Semifinalists, and 6 National Achievement Outstanding Participants. The Class of 2014, which numbered 251, included 10 National Merit Finalists, 10 National Merit Semifinalists, 1 National Achievement Finalist, 1 National Achievement Semifinalist, 26 Commended, and 1 National Hispanic Scholar. MINIMUM GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS (21.5 Units) English 4 Units Mathematics 4 Units (must include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, College Algebra, or Precalculus) Science 4 Units (must include Biology and Chemistry) Social Studies 3 Units (must include U.S. History, Modern World History, U.S. Government/ Economics) World Languages 2 Units (same, consecutively) Physical Education 1/2 Unit (1 semester) Comparative Religions 1/2 Unit (1 semester) Fine Arts 1/2 Unit (1 semester) Elective Courses 3 Units Upper School students may only enroll in AP classes with the approval of teachers and department chairs. All students taking AP classes sit for the AP exam at the end of second semester. The earliest students may take AP classes is tenth grade and the number of students who do so is extremely small. For juniors and seniors, AP enrollment is capped at no more than four AP courses per year. Students with eight to 10 AP classes at graduation typically make up less than 4% of a graduating class. In 2013-2014 outstanding exam results in the Advanced Placement Program at Woodward earned students recognition by the College Board as follows: 39 AP Scholars, 8 National AP Scholars (Highest Award), 25 AP Scholars with Honors, and 56 AP Scholars with Distinction. CURRICULUM Woodward Academy maintains a curriculum that is college preparatory. The vast majority of Upper School courses utilize college-level textbooks, including all English courses. The curriculum in the Upper School includes Advanced Placement (AP), Honors College Prep (HP), Enriched College Prep (EP), and College Prep (CP). The College Prep track covers all concepts necessary to succeed at the college level. All students must enroll in at least five courses daily, four of which must be from the core disciplines of mathematics, science, English, social studies, world languages, or computer science. Independent Scientific Research (ISR) is an honors science course designed to provide the upper level science student an opportunity to perform authentic, independent scientific research under the guidance of faculty research advisors. Students are expected to enter their research in local, state, and national competitions. GRADE POINT AVERAGE/CLASS RANK Grade point averages are computed using semester grades. Two separate GPAs are computed for grades 9-12: a comprehensive GPA and a core GPA. Grade point averages are computed to two decimal places. The comprehensive GPA is based on semester grades earned in all credited subjects graded A-F. The core GPA is based on semester grades beginning with the fall term of the ninth grade and is cumulative for grades 9-12. Courses from the disciplines of mathematics, science, English, social studies, computer science, foreign language, comparative religions, and Advanced Placement course work are considered in the computation. The core GPA is used for determining honors at graduation and National Honor Society eligibility. Both the comprehensive and core GPAs are provided to colleges, universities, and other institutions. 2014 AP SCORES AP/SCORE 5 4 3 2 Biology 7 14 6 4 Calculus AB 30 5 3 Calculus BC 6 5 Chemistry 12 16 14 3 Computer Science A 1 5 3 2 English Language & Comp 18 23 10 English Literature & Comp 9 8 2 1 20 Environmental Science 4 10 3 2 19 European History 5 8 1 French Language & Culture TOTAL SCORES 31 1 39 11 5 3 Microeconomics 17 9 4 Music Theory 4 3 1 Physics B 1 45 7 18 ADVANCED PLACEMENT Twenty-one Advanced Placement courses are offered in the Upper School, although not every course is available every year.
