A Brief Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
ABOUT THE FACULTY
Client/patient motivation is well documented as a significant
predictor for the success of treatment for persons with
health and mental health issues. Motivational Interviewing
(MI) is an empirically supported approach to counseling clients/patients who are struggling with change. In a large
number of empirical studies, MI has shown to be an effective
intervention to improve rapport and increase retention and
outcomes of persons with various health, mental health
and/or substance abuse issues. This workshop will enable
health care professionals to increase their knowledge and
skills in the use of MI with clients/patients who are considering change.
Paul Toriello, RhD, CRC, CCS, LCAS, is the Chairperson of the
Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies in the
College of Allied Health, East Carolina University. He is also
an Associate Professor and Director of Doctoral and Graduate Programs, as well as Interim Assistant Dean for Grants
Administration. Dr. Toriello is one of a limited number of MI
nationally certified trainers in North Carolina and is known
for his active and engaging presentation style.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should increase their ability to effectively care for clients by being
able to:
 Explore the spirit, principle and concepts of MI
 Identify the basic strategies of MI
 Identify client/patient “Change Talk”
 Discuss client/patient “Change Talk”;
as well as implement these skills in their daily practice.
