Dear Parents/Carers,
This half term has been an exciting and eventful start to the school year. We are delighted to be one
of only seven schools in London to run the Drumworks programme. It is incredible to see our young
people performing in the playground, with their peers being able to see their achievements.

We were inspired by our performers at the Kenneth Moore Theatre, who performed their version of
Macbeth, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. We also had four performers selected for the
Present Moment Theatre Club production of The Tempest, who performed at RADA.
Theatre work continued to flourish with 90 Year 8 pupils taking part in a War Theatre Workshop.
Creative writing has been a big feature of this half term with a workshop for 6th Formers lead by a
visiting author, Gareth R Roberts, a successful blogger Aisha Chudasama-Mahamod and a film critic,
our own Mr Farnsworth. As well as this, Year 7 visited the British Library to explore Gothic Writing.
We have also seen sporting success this term in both football, netball and in the UEL rowing
competition.
The Sixth Form are now preparing for University and we have had speakers in from Anglia Ruskin
University; However we are also preparing our Year 11s for their choices in the future with trips to
Warwick University and a talk from East Anglia.

Flag Competition
Barking and Dagenham Council is asking young people to design an anniversary flag which will be
flown on the roof of the Civic Centre in the New Year for the entire period of the anniversary.
What you need to do:
 Design a ‘Barking & Dagenham 50th Anniversary flag’ with a theme which reflects 1965–2015
 The printed flag will be 2m x 1m. Draw the designs preferably on A3 paper
 Include Barking & Dagenham’s Sixties Sports and pop stars or something which represents
important landmark such as FORD cars, music, art or sport in the 60’s in your design
 Keep it simple. A flag has to be seen and recognised from a distance
 To submit your design bring into school and hand into Mr Sands, Art Department
 The winner will work with the graphic designer to refine the idea and transform into the
final design for print.
Pastoral Message
Well done and thank you to all parents/carers for supporting your child at The Warren School for our
first half-term. Most students have settled in very well into the new academic year ensuring the high
standards we expect with uniform and behaviour are met.

Attendance & Punctuality:
The Warren School recognises that unless children and young people attend school regularly and
punctually they will not be able to take full advantage in educational opportunities available to
them. The responsibility for raising and promoting attendance is shared by parents/carers, children
and young people and schools. By cooperating and working together we can improve attendance
and this in turn will raise achievement. Please ensure that you continue to support your child in this
matter and refer to your child’s planner for any information regarding attendance.
Students are expected to be in school promptly, and if late they must sign in at the reception and
provide a reason for their lateness. If a child is late twice or more in a week, they are expected to
attend an hour after-school detention on the following Wednesday from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. In the
event that your child misses the detention, they are expected to attend a Friday detention in the
same week with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Failure to do so will result in a further
sanction.

Rewards:
The Warren School ethos of encouragement is central to the promotion of success. Rewards are one
means of achieving this. They have a motivational role in helping students to realise that their hard
work is valued. Integral to the system of rewards is an emphasis on praise both informal and formal
to individuals and groups.
The school promotes good improved behaviour by students through a system of recognition and
reward which clearly communicated to students, parents and other stakeholders.

Please also remind your child that we do not allow fizzy drinks or any kind of energy drinks in school.
Students are allowed to bring in water or juice and a sensible sized snack to eat at break if desired.
Family sized packets of biscuits, crisps, doughnuts etc. and fizzy or energy drinks will be confiscated
until the end of the school day.
Failure to complete homework and disrupting others in lessons:
Any student who disrupts the learning of others or does not complete homework will be subject to a
one hour homework detention.
Jewellery - Students are allowed to wear to wear a wrist watch.
Banned items:
The following items are not allowed onto School premises:
Chewing gum, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, lighters, matches, correction fluids, aerosols, mobile
phones, electronic books, laser pens and handheld musical devices, for example MP3/4 players. The
Governing Body allows all students in an emergency to contact home free of charge.
Any items which are seen during the course of the school day, will be confiscated. It will be returned
a week later to the student or to a parent / carer at a time of mutual convenience. However, some
items will only be returned to parents/carers.

We have had the pleasure of working with year 7 students and look forward to the next term. The
year 7 students have settled well into the Warren School. In our first assembly students were
already recognised for their hard work and the commitment they have made for their success. We
have had the pleasure of working with year 7 students and look forward to the next term.
The following forms have been identified for the positive points they have already achieved. These
points will be used for students to gain their Bronze, Silver and gold awards. Weekly assemblies
recognise and reward the forms with the best attendance for the week. Emma Bear has been
introduced as the year 7 attendance mascot and she was welcomed by all.

Year 8:
Throughout this half term we have promoted a number of key issues to our year 8 cohort which
have been taken on board and dealt with in a positive manner. One area that we have promoted is
that of empathy and understanding of those around us. To understand others needs and support
them so that we can develop our own experience of life.
We have looked in detail at the school moto which is “to be in the right place at the right time doing
the right thing”. We have asked our year 8’s to take on the additional responsibility that this implies
and understand that we are all responsible for our own behaviour, and not to blame others if our
actions are not to the expectations required. To take responsibility is the first step to improving our
behaviour. By doing this we can all progress and achieve, as we can then focus on developing our
own learning.
I would like to thank the parents and carers of our year 8 students who have been supportive with
the new issues we face. You have helped us to install a new responsibility and maturity within our
students that is needed when we take the step from year 7 to year 8. To acknowledge the progress

Year 9:
This is a very important year for our students, as they select their own academic pathway that will
help shape their future lives. It is essential that our students take a focussed and diligent approach
to their studies this year. In some subjects pupils have already started studying GCSE content and in
others they are working on their skills and knowledge to help them prepare for next year when they
embark on Key Stage 4. Ms Haynes and I are excited to be working alongside the students to ensure
that they are suitably prepared for their upcoming GCSE examinations, and I’m sure that the year 9
pupils are looking forward the challenging year ahead.

Behaviour and uniform:
The year 9 pupils’ behaviour around school is improving and I wanted to say thank you to all parents
and carers for their continued support and commitment in this area. At the start of the year I
received numerous compliments about how smart the year 9s were looking and that was down to
both the pupils and parents. We aim to upkeep this high standard throughout the year so please do
ensure you child is coming to school with their blazer on, top button done up, tie showing four
stripes and the correct school shoes on. Girls also need to be aware that they should be wearing no
makeup, nail varnish or jewellery to school.

Year 10:
Firstly, I would like to introduce myself to parents. My name is Mr. Jafar and I am the lucky member
of staff who has been chosen to lead our current year 10’s through their time at Warren School. I say
lucky as I truly believe we have a fantastic group of young people who with time will develop into
outstanding ambassadors for the school, their families and the local community.
Year 10’s have made an excellent start to the year so far and have shown the first signs of adopting a
mature and focused attitude. The message this year is very much about pupils taking responsibility
for their learning and being in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. I am pleased to
say that the pupils have taken this on board but as you will know they need constant reminders and
support to maintain this focus.
In order for us to continue with this positive start it is imperative that the school and parent
relationship is strong and collaborative. This is an important year for our pupils and if we are working
together we will be able to give our young people the best opportunity to achieve. Please keep up
to date with current school policies with regards to attendance, homework and punctuality (see
below) and if you do have a query I am available to contact via the school office on 0208 270 4500.

Attendance
If your child is taken ill then please ensure that you have called the school office. It is no secret that
the higher your attendance the higher grades your child is likely to achieve so please ensure that
your child only misses school for serious medical conditions.

Being on time to school allows pupils to start school in the right frame of mind and obtain all of the
necessary information from form time.




Homework
Homework is vital as it consolidates the learning that has taken place, again it’s no surprise that
pupils who consistently complete homework gain higher grades in their GCSE’s. If a pupil misses a
piece of homework they will be issued a subject detention and given the chance to finish the work
during this time.
Form time
We have a fantastic and experienced set of form tutors within year 10 (see below) who will be using
their knowledge and expertise to help your child through their time here at Warren School. The form
tutors spend time with your child every day and will be the first point of call for important
information.

PSHE
During form time pupils will be undertaking a programme of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health
Education). This programme will allow pupils to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills
they need to manage their lives. Pupils will be taking part in presentations, revision skills and
discussions on social issues. Through this programme we aim to prepare pupils for the opportunities,
responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Youth Travel Ambassadors
Youth Travel Ambassadors (YTA) is a youth-led education project developed by TfL. The programme
is delivered by the London Transport Museum on behalf of TfL in partnership with London boroughs,
local police and other stakeholders.

By giving young people a voice and an active role in creating transport-related education campaigns,
YTA projects seek to deliver new and innovative approaches to key transport issues:

3. Community and personal safety
LIFE Course
Two of our pupils; Tommy Andreas and Amy Gardiner, completed the LIFE Course run by Dagenham
Fire Station.
Pupils who take part in the LIFE programme carry out a number of fire brigade related activities,
including the use of ladders, breathing apparatus, casualty rescue techniques, hose line practice and
problem solving tasks – all of which are designed to improve motivation, confidence and team
building skills.
They both did exceptionally well on all tasks with Amy winning a Jack Petchey Award for her efforts.
ARC Theatre Production
At the end of September the year 10’s were treated to an excellent production run by the Arc
Theatre group. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed this and Mrs Osei-Ntem and the Arc Theatre group
congratulated our students on their conduct and behaviour during the production.

Since the start of the year I have been very impressed with the way the year group have conducted
themselves. After all we do only have 17 weeks of Easter break. I would like to take this opportunity
to ensure you that my aim/goal for this year group has not changed since last year. I want this year
group to get the best results this school have ever had. I do believe that they are capable of doing
so. I will endeavour to make sure that this happens.

We had 32 students in October who were involved in a university talk. The university came in to
speak to a small group of students about what university life was like and what to expect. The
student really seemed to enjoy it and the feedback from the speakers was extremely positive about
the way the group conducted themselves.

Sixth Form:
This has been the first half term with our new leadership team in the sixth form: Mrs Jethwa, Miss
Davies and Mrs Hutchings. We have many new exciting ideas on what we want for the sixth form
and we want it to be an outstanding sixth form. We are all aspiring to one goal, the same goal and
that is to ensure every Sixth Former reaches their full potential to prepare them for the best futures
through be able to successfully compete with every other student across the country for same
university, apprenticeships, or job

We have now established our Sixth Form Committee, who are all students with an excellent record
of behaviour, attendance, punctuality and follow the dress code impeccably. They have been
working with and talking to younger students, visiting assemblies and building good working
relationships with staff. They all have shown a strong desire to make a lasting impression at our
school and be involved in decision making. Therefore they have spent the past few Council meetings
discussing the impact they would like to have across the whole school, as well as ideas for fund
raising, charity events and whole school activities they intend to organise this year.

On Friday 10th October I had the pleasure of joining our students at the UEL Indoor Rowing
Championships. In terms of performance our Sixth Formers had a very successful day but more
importantly they were outstanding ambassadors of our School. They conducted themselves in a very
mature manner and were very helpful and supportive of their younger peers. They also made the
most of this great opportunity of visiting UEL but meeting with representatives from various courses
and having a tour of the sports facilities and campus. Please congratulate and commend the

Enrichment Programme
Our Core Programme was revised this year and now includes lots of opportunities for student to
develop their skills set and prepare for University and their futures. On a Wednesday afternoon we
have set up one-to-one mentoring and tutoring for our Sixth Formers who missed out on getting
their C grades in English and Maths. It is a wonderful atmosphere and a productive learning
environment to witness and be part of.
Year 12 core on Thursday the 11th of September was held by a company called Elevate who will be
helping our students throughout the year with developing their independent study skills.

Anglia Ruskin University
The Sixth form and a selected group of year 11’s were lucky to have the chance to experience what
life would be like at University, our guest from Anglia Ruskin University provided the students with
several presentations from student life to student finance. Students then had the opportunity to
visits the University bus which was converted into examples of student accommodation. Our sixth
formers and year 11’s were a credit to the school and we would like to congratulate them on their
behaviour.
Open Day Trip
To recognise that your child is at an important and pivotal stage in their Education, we are
developing our enrichment programme to help support them with this. With regard to the planning
of their future career paths we are organising a University Open Day trip to the University of Lincoln.
We are offering this exciting opportunity to all members of the Sixth Form but there will only be 45
spaces which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The trip will take place on
Wednesday 3rd December. Students will meet in the Common Room at 8:00 for registration and the
estimated time we expect to arrive back to Warren is around 19:30. We will travel to the University
and back to Warren School via coach. The cost of the transport up to the University and back will be
£15 which will need to be paid to the Front Office by Friday 14th November, along with the
permission slip attached below.
Please note that we will provide a free school meal to those eligible. Any additional food or drink
students are welcome to bring their own or bring money to if they wish to purchase it throughout
the day.
The students will be allowed to attend the trip in non-uniform but clothing will need to be
appropriate as they will still be representing the school. Students are still members of Warren Sixth
Form during this time and any inappropriate conduct will mean that they will not be invited on any
further enrichment programmes.
Final message: We would just like to commend all the Sixth Form students to a successful start to
the Year, but please remember that this is a crucial time in their education and they need to be
carrying out independent study time at home if they are to achieve the highest grades possible.

Humanities News
GCSE RS
After half term all year 9 students will be given the opportunity to study GCSE RS, this is a
compulsory GCSE and conforms to statutory guidance. It will give pupils the chance to achieve an
extra GCSE by the end of year 11; they will follow the course for the rest of year 9, 10 and 11. The
aim of the course is to encourage learners to be inspired, moved and challenged by following a
broad, satisfying and worthwhile course of study, covering a variety of contemporary topics that will
challenge them and equip them to lead constructive lives in the modern world.

Celebrating year 8 Volcano projects - Humanities Faculty
The year 8's had a volcano making project this half term. We have had some very amazing entries
and I have been very impressed with the level of effort that has been put into them. Well done

Geography Awards:
The Year 11 students went to Southend-on –Sea as part of their controlled assessment. All students
displayed excellent behaviour and have worked very hard during the controlled assessment piece.

The Year 7’s had a globe making competition this term and the Year 8’s had a volcano making
competition this term. Ms Islam has been very impressed with the models that I have been brought

We have had a successful first half term in the History Department. The pupils appear to be enjoying
the new curriculum and many are turning out to be very promising historians. We have been very
honoured to give out ‘Historian of the Week’ certificates and we are pleased to share with you some
outstanding work from year 9. These are examples of assessment pieces where pupils were asked to
create a poster or leaflet to promote the maiden voyage of the Titanic.
We would also like to inform parents that the History club will be starting after half term. This is
open to pupils from all year groups. The focus will be the creation of a World War One memorial
garden which will form part of the school landscape when completed. Please encourage your child
to attend and be part of this cultural experience.

For those pupils that still have not paid their Food Science money (£5), they will have to supply their
own ingredients starting after half term. The recipes will be given one week in advance and will be
an additional homework. For those that have paid, the school will purchase their ingredients. The
only requirement is that the pupils bring a container to take their products home in.
The Key Stage 4 pupils taking GCSE Catering as an option have also had a great first half term. The
Year 10s have been cooking a range of dishes to develop their higher skills in preparation for their
practical exam in June. The Year 11s have been completing their controlled assessment as well as
starting to prepare for the written exam in June.
The pupils taking Health and Social Care and Child Development as an option have had a brilliant first
half term. They are in completion of parts of their controlled assessment, which make an excellent
contribution to their overall grade.

News from the Drama Department
Shakespeare Schools Festival:
This year our school has been fortunate to participate in ‘The Shakespeare Schools Festival’. The
festival has over a 1000 schools across the UK participating in performing a 30 minute version of a
Shakespeare play at professional theatre. Throughout the last two months, I have worked with a
very talented cast of 9, from a range of years from 8-13, in rehearsing Macbeth. The extra-curricular
project has been ran as a professional theatre production, with rehearsals, workshops, technical,
and dress rehearsals. The project also gave the cast members a better knowledge and understanding
of the themes, language, and characters of a Shakespeare play. We performed our play on
Wednesday 15th October at the Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford and it was a huge success. The
evening had two other schools from the local area performing and all students’ performances were
excellent. I am extremely proud of our students as they performed to an extremely high standard
throughout their performance. The Shakespeare Schools Festival co-ordinators were extremely
complimentary about our students in their feedback on the night and it really was pleasing to see all
our students respond and act in a professional manner throughout the whole process.
We will definitely be running the project again this year and aim to make it even more bigger and
more successful!

The English department took a group of forty year 7 pupils to the British Library on Monday 20th
October to view an exhibition called “Terror and Wonder: The Gothic Imagination”, to support the
ghost stories unit of work year 7 have been studying in English and to reward hard work and effort in
lessons. The pupils were wonderfully behaved throughout the trip and were fantastic ambassadors
for the school.
The group participated in a workshop which took them around the exhibition and explored a range
of horror-themed literature, art and film from the 18th century to the 21st century. Pupils were asked
to analyse how popular fears have developed and changed over the centuries, and to explore this is
reflected in the art and literature we produce.

Shea Desmond, a year 7 pupil on the trip, had this to say:
“On the 20th of October, a group of 40 children were selected to visit the British Library to learn
about gothic writing. We stayed at the library for an hour and a half. Some of the activities we took
part in were really fun; we got the opportunity to read some books from the 18th century! “It was
really fun and I enjoyed it!” said Zac Davis, another student who was picked for the trip. We spent
time planning for our own gothic tale. Interestingly, we wandered around the exhibition and looked
at a group of novels, ranging from the 18th to the 21st century. Finally, at the end of the day, we went
back to school. Overall, I loved it! (But I wish we had a little more time there!”

The Present Moment Theatre Lab production of The Tempest
The English and Drama departments were delighted to have the opportunity to work with the
acclaimed Present Moment Theatre Lab. After weeks of borough wide auditions, four pupils from

All pupils worked hard rehearsing during the summer holiday and in the second week of September
toured the finished production across the borough visiting schools, culminating in a performance at
RADA in central London.
The cast were professional and impressive. It was difficult to believe that for all pupils this was their
first time performing Shakespeare to a live audience. Lines were delivered with eloquence and
precision whilst physical performances were so believable it was at times difficult to remember that
the cast were all under 18 years of age.
Year 9 and Year 10 pupils were able to watch the production in support of studying a Shakespeare
play in English lessons this term.
All pupils involved, either as cast or audience members, were engaged, enthusiastic and excellently
behaved. An absolute triumph!

Reading and Accelerated Reader
Reading well is undoubtedly the single most important factor in pupils improving their chances of
doing well across the curriculum. It enhances writing and oral skills, improves vocabulary and
spelling, develops a child’s ability to concentrate and boosts self- confidence.
At Warren, all pupils in Years 7 and 8 are enrolled in the Accelerated Reader programme,
internationally recognised as an extremely effective means of helping pupils progress.
After initial ‘STAR’ testing, pupils are given a reading level which relates to colour coded books in the
school library. Pupils can then take online quizzes on the books they have read and the school can

chart their progress. Pupils will have an online ‘virtual bookshelf’ displaying all the books they have
taken quizzes on and will be rewarded for reaching key milestones in their reading.
After half-term, pupils will take quizzes every fortnight during form time, so we expect pupils to
complete at least one book every two weeks. Quizzes may also be taken at any other convenient
time using the library computers.
We trust we have your support in ensuring that your child is reading regularly at home. Half term is,
of course, an ideal opportunity for pupils to catch up with their reading. Pupils may have read
several books in recent weeks and refreshing their memory of these during half term would put
them in a good position to attempt several quizzes when they return and move more quickly
towards getting their awards.
We would also like to remind parents of pupils in all years that a reading book is part of every pupil’s
essential daily equipment

News from the Music Department:
Drum Works
As a school we are incredibly lucky to have been chosen to be one of just seven schools in London
that is able to run the drum works programme with the support of the Barbican Arts and Youth
Music. After taking delivery of 28 samba drums we were able to launch the programme on 17th
September with a full day workshop and a lunch time playground performance which attracted quite
a crowd. We have secured funding to run the scheme for four years and our students are already
benefitting from a lunchtime drumming club and an after school performance group. In addition to
this every year 7 student has had a chance to experience drum works 1st hand and has been given a
session. We are extremely excited about the future of this project and look forward to working with
students of all ages and abilities across the school in the years to come. The drum works instructors
have been extremely complimentary about our students and the feedback from the pupils has been
excellent.

English Heritage Schools Festival
As a school we have spent the past 6 months working hard towards gaining English Heritage Schools
status. As part of this students have been focussing on local historical projects in a range of
curriculum areas. The school took part in a showcase and exhibition at Eastbury Manor house in July
where a range of the students art, textiles and drama work was displayed. This term we have been
focussing in on the upcoming centenary of the first world war and ways in which we can
commemorate this. The art department have benefited from the English Heritage Funding through
investment of specialist equipment and resources which allows our learners to explore new media.
With this funding we have been able to design and create a series of stained glass pieces, memorial
blankets and recruitment posters detailing WW1 events and linking to the history within our local
community.
The humanities club have plans to design and plant a garden of remembrance in front of the science
department. The English department have plans to study war poetry and creative writing focussed
around the 1st World War.
Barking’s War Theatre Workshop
90 students from year 8 were lucky enough to be selected to take part in a theatre workshop based
upon stories from “Barking’s War”. The workshop was run by Anna Karen who wrote and directed
the play and has been a professional actress in both the TV & theatre for close to 60 years (best
known for her roles as Olive from ‘On the Buses’, Aunt Sal in Eastenders and playing alongside
Barbara Windsor in the Carry On Films). Students responded to real life stories of local soldiers and
their families during the 1st World War and created improvised plays based on these. The workshop
leaders were extremely impressed by the quality of the work produced by many of the students and
their emotive responses to the sources they were given.
In addition to this a group of 8 students who have been identified as Gifted & Talented in drama
received an hour and a half workshop to prepare them to represent the school in the English
Heritage Borough Showcase at the Broadway Theatre on 6th November. We look forward to telling
you more about how this event has gone in the next parents’ newsletter.

of extra-curricular activities. At the end of this Newsletter is a timetable of what is currently
available to students in the school. In addition to these we are looking to start running some short
certificated courses as well for students which include things such as first aid and film making.

Enrichment Coordinator & Teacher of Music
News from the Maths Department:
All pupils must revise work completed in class so far using “mymaths” and notes in their exercise
books. Pupils can use the “I Can Statements” (learning checklist in their exercise books) to identify
topics for improvement. In addition, pupils will be receiving extra HW (worksheets or on “mymaths”)
during half term. Year 11 pupils have been informed of their topic areas that they need to improve
on by their teachers.

Five Year 10 and six Year 11 pupils attend Enrichment Sessions at King’s College London Maths
School where they are studying interesting topics and clever ideas to enhance their learning.
They are working with pupils from across London and are very enthusiastic and keen. The pupils are
impeccably well behaved and confident at working in collaboration. They will be attending these
sessions every fortnight between 5pm – 7pm.

UEL London Indoor Rowing Championships – Fri 10th Oct
Michael Turner YR11 came 8th out of 96 competitors and has been talent selected by London Youth
Rowing.
Aysha Bentick YR11 came 12th out of 80 girls competing and Brooke Golden YR11 came 25th.

The YR12 Girls: Cemone Collins, Gbemi Oloko, Katie Lucas & Deja Mckoy came 12th, 13th, 14th & 15th
respectively out of 50 competitors.
Sam Jackson YR13 came 11th out of 60 competitors and Joshua Morrison and Cedric Bokete came
18th and 20th respectively.
All of our students were a credit to the school and competed with courage as they had to race in
front of about 1500 people.
YR 11 Football Team V Trinity – London Cup – 14th October 2014
On Tuesday night Warren beat Trinity of Croydon 6-2 in the London Cup. Goals from Tarun Nahir,
Scott Mitchell, Solomon Ogunwomoju, Alfie Harris and Daniel Parish put us 5-0 up at half time. We
took our foot off the pedal in the second half and eventually came out 6-2 winners with a 6th goal
from Dylan Newell. The support from staff and students was fantastic.
YR11 Football Team V Royal Liberty – Essex Cup - 16th October 2014
On Thursday the 16th October our Year 11 team beat Royal Liberty School 9-8 on Penalties after the
game finished 3-3 after full time. Daniel Parish scored a fantastic half volley to equalise after Liberty
took the lead against the run of play. Two goals from captain Scott Mitchell, the second an
absolutely screamer from 30 yards put us 3-2 in front until the last minute when a goal mouth
scramble led to a Liberty equaliser. The game went to penalties after a goal-less extra time. We
scored 9 out of 10 penalties with only one player not having to take a nerve racking penalty. The
hero, as is usual in penalty shoot-outs, was our goal keeper Kane Forbes-O’Gorman. Kane took and
converted our 5th and crucial penalty but as the shoot-out became more nervous Kane saved a
penalty after we missed which kept us alive. He then made the crucial save that led to victory saving
Liberty’s 10 penalty kick. The team played really well and deserved to have won comfortably in
normal time.

PE Clubs & Activities
Junior Golf Coaching
As part of our partnership with Sport England our junior golf coaching programme will begin again
Wednesday 5th November. We have 12 spaces available for students in year 7/8 & 9. Students will
have to apply for this amazing opportunity which provides them with free golf coaching for the
entire year.
Lessons will be on a Wednesday from 3pm until 4 pm. A member of the PE department will escort
the students to the Golf Range.
Indoor Rowing Club
Our Indoor Rowing club runs every lunchtime and is available for all students. The club has been a
great success so far with hundreds of students having a go.
Students should feel free to come along and try indoor rowing if they have not done so before.

In science club this term we have been doing many exciting experiments to develop the interest and
enthusiasm of Year 7s. Students got a chance to make lava lamps, fire writing and even dissect an
eyeball.
Here’s a typical day at science club:

The Sodium Thiosulphate challenge
Aim:
Complete the chemical reaction in 23 seconds.
Background: When Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid react together a pale yellow
precipitate is formed. We timed how long it took for the cross to disappear. The
challenge was to make the chemical reaction happen in 23 seconds by changing the
volume of acid.
*** Winners ***
Winning group completed the reaction in 23.06 seconds!

will learn how to do a new extraordinary experiment.
