SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The Division II Miners play Tuesday night
against Defending Division II champion
Central Missouri in Warrensburg, before
facing the ‘Roos Wednesday. The Miners
come in to the games at 1-0 after a 32-point
win over Missouri Baptist Saturday. T
They posted a 12-15 mark last season and
return one starter to the lineup. MST added
four junior college transfers to the roster in
the offseason. They are a high-scoring team,
ranking fifth in the nation in scoring last year.
They are led in scoring by Michael Nesbitt at
16.0 points per game while . Nesbitt leads
the way with eight rebounds a game.
UP NEXT
The ‘Roos will head to the mainland regional
of the EA Sports Maui Invitational on
Saturday and Sunday in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They will face hosts UALR on Saturday at 3:30
p.m., followed by either CSUN or Samford on
Sunday at 1 or 3:30, depending on the result.
The ‘Roos will be facing the Trojans of
Arkansas-Little Rock for the first time since
2000, and the third time all-time. The series is
tied 1-1, with each team winning on its home
floor.
The ‘Roos have never faced CSUN, and
are 2-0 against Samford all-time, winning at
home and on the road in 1989 and 1990.
THE COACHES
Kareem Richardson is in his second season
as the head coach at UMKC, posting an 11-21
record. He was named the sixth coach in the
Division I era on March 19, 2013 after helping
Louisville to a National Championship in
2013 as an assistant under Hall of Fame
coach Rick Pitino.
He brings 14 years of Division I coaching
experience to the fold, as well as four years
playing at the Division I level, graduating
from Evansville in 1997.
Jim Glash is in his sixth season as the
head coach at Missouri S&T after serving as
the assistant coach there for two seasons. He
led MST to its highest finish a year ago in the
GLVC, fourth in the east division.
NATIONALLY RANKED MID-MAJOR
For the first time in school history, UMKC
has been ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25,
coming in at No. 23 on Monday afternoon.
The ‘Roos are one of two teams from the
WAC that are ranked, as NMSU is 19th (full
poll on page 3).
THE SERIES
The ‘Roos will be facing the Miners for the
first time in the Division I era, but played
them during the NAIA days. The last meeting
was all the way back in 1979 when they were
called Missouri-Rolla. The Miners took a 10484 win on December 1 that year in Rolla.
A WIN WOULD MEAN...
- Kansas City would have moved to 2-0 at the
Swinney Recreation Center under Kareem
Richardson.
- UMKC would have won its home opener for
the first time since the 2012 season when it
rolled Lincoln University.
- The ‘Roos would have improved to 11-2
against Division II competition as a Division
I school.
WAC PRESEASON POLL
UMKC was picked fifth by the media and
sixth by the coaches.
The ‘Roos received 69 points from the
media to place fifth, ahead of Bakersfield and
behind Utah Valley. UMKC tallied 25 points
in the coach’s poll, just three points away
from being picked fourth. The ‘Roos trailed
Bakersfield by two points and Utah Valley by
three.
New Mexico State was selected to finish
first in both polls, garnering 17 of the 18
first-place votes in the media poll and all six
possible votes in the coaches vote (Coaches
could not vote for their own team).
Last season, UMKC was picked to finish
ninth, but tied for fifth in the standings, and
was the No. 4 seed in the WAC Tournament.

FREE THROW IMPROVEMENT
The ‘Roos hit 80 percent from the line
against Kansas State, and 79.3 percent
against Missouri, the highest two totals in
the Kareem Richardson era. It is a huge
improvement from last year, hitting just 63.4
percent to rank last in the Western Athletic
Conference. It is a new team though, with
only three returnees from that squad.
HARRISON’S PRESEASON HONORS
Martez Harrison was picked to the Preseason
All-WAC first-team by both the media and
coaches, with the entire first-team being
identical in both polls. Harrison averaged
17.2 points per game last season after being
named the WAC Freshman of the Year.
He shattered five freshman records at
UMKC (scoring, assists, steals, free throws
made, and free throws attempted), and
ranked eighth in the nation among freshmen
scorers a year ago. He also ranked among the
WAC leaders in scoring, assists and steals.

2014-15 UMKC MEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES
LAST YEAR’S WAC ACCOLADES
The only ‘Roo to earn honors last season was
Martez Harrison, getting WAC Freshman of the
Year, while being named to the All-Newcomer
team. He was the first UMKC player to ever earn
Freshman of the Year honors.
He was left off the first or second team by
the league’s coaches despite ranking third in the
WAC in scoring and assists, and fourth in steals.
UMKC was the only school that finished in the
league’s top eight that was not represented on
either All-WAC team.
OH CAPTAINS
The ‘Roos named three team captains this season,
announced at the annual Roos Basketball Tip-Off
Dinner in September. Martez Harrison, Reese
Holliday and Shayok Shayok were given the
opportunity to lead the 2014-15 squad.
IN THE CHARTS
Martez Harrison currently ranks 36th on the alltime scoring chart at UMKC with 562 points. He
also sits sixth with 20 consecutive games with
at least 10 points. He is also one of 17 players to
score 30+ in a game in school history.
3-POINT STREAK
UMKC has made at least one three-point basket
in 431 consecutive regular season or tournament
games dating back to Jan. 22, 2000.
KANSAS CITY CONNECTION
The ‘Roos roster this season is loaded with local
players. In fact, the eight players from the Kansas
City area on the roster are the most ever on a
UMKC roster in the Division I era (1987).
The local players include Martez Harrison,
Reese Holliday, Noah Knight, Isaac Kreuer,
Brandyn Moultrie, Broderick Newbill, Mason
Wedel and Frank Williams.
FAMILY TIES
Broderick Newbill joined the ‘Roos this season
after transferring from Fresno State. His father,
Billy Newbill, played for the ‘Roos first Division I
team in 1987, and played for UMKC from 198789. Broderick is originally from Kansas City and a
product of Hogan Prep.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
UMKC has 11 players eligible this season that
have never played a minute in a Kangaroo
uniform. Ten of those players are sophomores
or freshmen.
STATESIDE TOUR
The ‘Roos will be on the road for at least 19 games
this season, with 17 of those coming in different
states. UMKC plays in more states this season that
any men’s college basketball team in the nation.
TURNOVER PRESS
The ‘Roos play a high pressure defense, and part
of their game is forcing turnovers. Last season,
UMKC forced 418 turnovers (13.9 pg), and turned
those into 448 points (14.9 ppg).
In the first two games this year, the ‘Roos
forced 34 turnovers and turned them into 43
points.

BCS OPPONENT HISTORY
The ‘Roos have a 12-71 all-time record against
power conference teams, defeating eight different
schools (Baylor, Colorado, Kansas State, Mississippi
State, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas A&M and Texas
Tech).
The win over Mizzou marked the first since 2003
against K-State.
VOICES OF THE ‘ROOS
Steven Davis is in his seventh season as the radio
voice of UMKC men’s basketball program.
Neil Harwell is in his 20th season as the TV play-byplay voice of the Kangaroos. Harwell began calling
UMKC games during the 1995-96 season and will
call all the games broadcast on KSMO.
LAST TIME OUT -
(Manhattan, Kan.) - The UMKC men’s basketball squad gave
Kansas State all it could handle at Bramlage Coliseum on
Monday night, but a second half run by the Wildcats proved
to be the difference in an 83-73 contest.
“I thought our guys really came out and competed
tonight,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “We got some
great experience, and hopefully we learned from this game
and get better from it.”
The ‘Roos (1-1) gave the Wildcats (2-0) their best shot in
the opening half, taking the lead early on, and extending it.

Kareem
RICHARDSON
Head Coach - 2nd Season
Evansville, 1997
Kareem Richardson was named the head coach at
UMKC on March 19, 2013, becoming the sixth in
the Division I era at UMKC.
In his first year with the ‘Roos in 2013-14, he led
the team to a fifth place finish in the WAC, and the
fourth seed in the conference tournament - both
of which were the highest since 2006 at UMKC.
The attendance increased 36 percent from the
previous year, while overall winning percentage
was an improvement from the last two years as
well. Martez Harrison, one of his first recruits on
the job, was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
The Kansas City, Mo. product averaged 17.2
points per game, and set numerous freshman
records at UMKC.
time at Drake, serving as recruiting coordinator
and helping head coach Mark Phelps secure the
top-rated recruited class in the Missouri Valley
Conference in two of his three years there. In his
first year as assistant coach at Drake, Richardson
helped lead the Bulldogs to post-season play
during the 2008-09 season, in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Prior to Drake, Richardson was the top assistant
with the UMKC men’s basketball program for the
2007-08 season. Richardson served as an assistant
coach at his alma mater Evansville from 2003-07,
one season (2002-03) at Wright State, as well as
a stint at Indiana State (1999-2002). Richardson’s
coaching career began at the University of Indianapolis from 1997-99.
Prior to his arrival, Richardson served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under
legendary coach Rick Pitino. He helped the Cardinals to the Big East tournament crown and the
NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed, on the way
to the 2012-13 National Championship.
Richardson helped Indiana State enjoy success.
In 2000, he guided the Sycamores to the NCAA
Tournament for the first time since the Larry Bird
era in the late 1970s. A year later in 2001, Indiana
State topped No. 4 seed Oklahoma to advance to
the second round of the NCAAs.
Richardson also spent a season at UMKC in 200708 as an assistant. He has played and coached in
the region, and has helped bring in well-ranked
recruiting classes at every school during his
coaching career.
Prior to his year at Louisville, Richardson made the
most of one season at Xavier, helping the Musketeers reach the NCAA Sweet 16 and the finals
of the Atlantic 10 Tournament that season while
posting a 23-12 record. He helped the Musketeers
land a Top 20 recruiting class in 2011.
As a player, Richardson played in an NCAA Tournament as a freshman at East Carolina University.
He then transferred to Evansville in 1995 and
quickly established himself as the Purple Aces’ top
point guard. Richardson, who was a team captain
two years, was selected to the Missouri Valley
Conference all-academic team in both 1996 and
1997. In 1996, he received notoriety on the MVC
all-underrated team. He was a first team all-state
selection at Rantoul (Ill.) Township High School in
1992 and was twice named conference player of
the year.
Richardson, 40, had joined Xavier from Drake
University, where he had been the head assistant
coach for three seasons. He has also served on
the basketball staffs at Evansville, Indiana State,
Wright State and Indianapolis.
Richardson, who was born in Tacoma, Wash.,
graduated from Evansville with a bachelor’s
degree in telecommunication and interpersonal
communication in 1997 and received his MBA
from the University of Indianapolis in 1999.
Richardson has been ranked as one of the top
assistants in college basketball according to the
basketball website Collegeinsider.com. He earned
a reputation as a top-level recruiter during his

UMKC 69, Missouri 61
Nov. 14, 2014
Columbia, Mo.
Mizzou Arena
(Columbia, Mo.) - UMKC men’s basketball got its first win over a BCS
conference team since 2003, in Kareem Richardson’s second season,
taking out the Missouri Tigers 69-61 behind 26 points from Martez
Harrison.
“I’m not going to sit here and fool anybody,” Head Coach Kareem
Richardson said. “It’s big for our program. But it can’t be the biggest
one for us this year. We have to build on it and look forward to the next
challenge.”
The ‘Roos (1-0) took a 7-5 lead on a Darius Austin jumper with 14:13
on the clock, marking the last lead change of the night. UMKC would lead
the rest of the game, and used that bucket to spark a 14-4 run to go up by
a 19-9 margin.
The ‘Roos tallied five threes in the opening half, including a pair from
freshman Collin Jennings to extend its advantage into the break. The
Tigers were bothered by the UMKC zone defense, and were unable to put
together long enough runs to get a lead. Its closest margin the rest of the
opening half was four with 5:34 left. The ‘Roos answered that with another
run though, and went into the break with a 33-24 lead.
UMKC’s defense proved to be the difference, holding MU to 33
percent in the opening half, while also holding a 23-17 rebound edge
agains the bigger Tigers. Harrison led the ‘Roos with seven at the half,
while offensively the team shot 41 percent.
The second stanza was just a matter of answering every MU run for
the ‘Roos. Harrison was the answer for much of it, scoring 19 of his 26
in the period. Each time the Tigers cut the lead to a single possession,
UMKC reacted well. Perhaps more impressively, the ‘Roos did it without
the services of starters Reese Holliday in the second half due to injury, and
Noah Knight, who didn’t play at all for the same reason.
With just more than 10 minutes left, MU cut the margin to three, but
junior Shayok Shayok hit a jumper in the paint to get it back to five. UMKC
would get that advantage back up to nine with 6:18 left on a three by
freshman Deshon Taylor. The Tigers could only get the margin to within
four the rest of the way, and UMKC hit its free throws down the stretch to
seal it.
The victory was the first over a BCS school since 2003 against Kansas
State, and marked the eight time that UMKC has defeated a BCS team. The
win was also the first ever over Missouri in four tries.
Harrison hit 15-of-16 from the line, while as a team the ‘Roos were
23-of-29 for 79.3 percent. It was the highest free throw percentage in
a game for UMKC in the Richardson era. Harrison’s 15 makes were the
highest for a ‘Roo from the line since 1994 when Tony Dumas hit 18.
The ‘Roos finished the night shooting 37 percent, but held the hosts
to only 38 percent shooting, while taking a 43-38 rebound edge and shot
13 more free throws. Broderick Newbill led the ‘Roos on the glass with
eight on the night, while Frank Williams matched a career-high with seven
boards to go with seven points. Shayok finished with 10 points and seven
rebounds as well.
The ‘Roos, who won their season opener for the first time since 2010,
handed the Tigers their first season debut loss since 2005.

Nov. 19, 2014
Kansas City, Mo.
Swinney Recreation Center
(Manhattan, Kan.) - The UMKC men’s basketball squad gave Kansas State
all it could handle at Bramlage Coliseum on Monday night, but a second
half run by the Wildcats proved to be the difference in an 83-73 contest.
“I thought our guys really came out and competed tonight,” Head
Coach Kareem Richardson said. “We got some great experience, and
hopefully we learned from this game and get better from it.”
The ‘Roos (1-1) gave the Wildcats (2-0) their best shot in the opening
half, taking the lead early on, and extending it. A Darius Austin put-back
layup at the 14:58 mark gave UMKC a 12-6 lead, and on the defensive end
the ‘Roos forced the Wildcats to take jump shots during the early phases.
Missouri-Kansas City built that advantage thanks to stellar offensive
execution, getting up by a 26-15 margin with 9:49 on the clock thanks
to a three from Broderick Newbill. The Wildcats rallied though, and cut
the margin to only two on a pair of Marcus Foster free throws with 4:17
remaining in the period.
The ‘Cats tied it a few minutes later at 32 all, but UMKC wouldn’t
surrender the lead. The ‘Roos got an old fashioned three-point play from
Thaddeus Smith to answer, and a three from Martez Harrison with 32
seconds left sent the ‘Roos into the half up 40-36.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent in the half, while Foster had a
game-high 10 points at the break. Newbill led the ‘Roos with eight in the
half. Shayok Shayok was a load for the Wildcats to handle, but foul trouble
forced him to the bench early with six points.
The second stanza saw the Wildcats make some changes with getting
Thomas Gipson the ball in isolation more, and ramp up the defensive effort.
“I thought Coach Weber made some adjustments there. He went small
putting four shooters surrounding Gipson, who we all know is a load inside.
They emphasized getting the ball inside early and that got us into more foul
trouble,” Richardson said. “Gipson did a good job on our opposing guys
deep and getting Shayok in foul trouble. All of our big guys were in foul
trouble so I thought they made a good adjustment by going small.”
The foul trouble was especially hurtful to the ‘Roos, as senior captain
and starting forward Reese Holliday sat out due to injury in the game.
Shayok and Smith picked up fouls early, and both had to sit down for
extended periods with four each.
That just opened the door for KSU to put the ball inside more, and
as a result, it went on a run. The ‘Roos moved it to six early in the second
stanza off a Harrison three, but the Wildcats finally got a lead when Foster
hit a three with 16:04 on the clock, 48-46. UMKC kept it to single digits for a
while, but KSU was in the double-bonus at the line by the 10 minute mark.
The free throws moved that lead to 11 at the 9:42 mark, but UMKC had
plenty of fight, cutting it back down to six on a Harrison layup with 6:34
left. It went back to 10, but UMKC again sliced the lead back to six with 2:16
remaining on a dunk from Shayok. The ‘Roos missed their next three shots
though, and a Justin Edwards dunk with 47 seconds left sealed it.
Harrison finished with a team-high 21 points, giving him back-to-back
20-plus point games to start the year. It was the second time he had scored
20 or more in consecutive games. Newbill set a career-high with 11 points,
while Shayok tallied 10 for the second time in as many games. Eleven
different players scored for UMKC in the game as well.
The ‘Roos shot 39 percent in the second half, while KSU hit 68 percent.
The Wildcats also took a 29-22 edge on the glass, and went 8-of-13 from
three. Gipson led KSU with 21 points.
