The – previously excellent – universities in the Congo have severely suffered from the difficult circumstances during the past decades. The buildings, the instrumentation, and the libraries are, in part, in a critical situation. We, the Förderverein Uni Kinshasa e.V. (NGO for the Support of the University of Kinshasa, fUNIKIN), want to break this vicious circle by a privately financed excellence scholarship system, BEBUC! Even worse are the over-aging and decreasing scientific quality of parts of the academic staff and the lack of excellent up-and-coming young scientists. Together with the German foundation ElseKröner-Fresenius-Stiftung we presently support ca. 160 young excellent students at 16 Congolese universities, six high schools, and two primary schools: in Kinshasa, Kikwit, Mbanza Ngungu, and Brazzaville (RC) in the West (see photo on top), in Lubumbashi in the South (center right), Mbuji-Mayi in the Center (center), and in Goma (center left), in Bukavu (bottom right), and in Butembo and Kisangani (bottom left) in the East and in the North of the country. This enables them to study rapidly and in depth in the Congo and later abroad. After their PhD they shall return to Africa as young professors and shall further transfer their knowledge to Congolese students. Please help us provide young excellent students in the Congo with a perspective and to transform the Congolese universities back to what they could be: excellent places for research and education, and a motor for the reconstruction of the country.
