13th November 2014
Dear Parents and Carers,
Please note that next week is going to be a very busy week – please make sure you note down events that
are relevant to you as detailed in our “events” section below. In particular year 1 being invited in to observe
phonics teaching, 5D class assembly, a whole school celebration of topic today, year 4 Tudor day and cake
sale and shoe boxes for the Samaritans being collected on Friday morning.
Pick Ups: As always, our FS/KS1 children are handed over to parents/person picking up from the
playground. Our KS2 children are permitted to go into the playground to find their parent/person picking up.
We always tell children that if they cannot find the person coming to collect them they must let their teacher or
the office know and wait in the office until that person arrives. It is therefore essential that children know who
is collecting them at the end of the day. Children are not allowed to leave the school grounds unless they
have their parents’ permission to walk home on their own. We will be reminding children of this again in
assembly tomorrow but would be grateful of your support in reinforcing this message to your child. If the
person collecting your child is going to be late please also let the office know. The message may not be able
to be passed to your child before they are released from class into the school playground, however, when
your child presents themselves to the office, then the office will be able to let your child know what is
happening and keep them safe until you/the person collecting them arrives.
KS2 Walking Home on their Own: As the nights are drawing in and evenings become darker earlier, if you
allow your child to walk to/home from school please can we encourage you to ensure they have appropriate
equipment to make them visible (for example, something reflective on their clothing/ bag or something bright)
to ensure that they are safe whilst crossing the road.
Parish Carpark: As you will know from past communication, the carpark off Berkley Road does not belong to
the school. It is the Church’s carpark which we have been permitted to use, in particular, we have been
granted access by the Church to allow coaches to drop our children off safely from trips and swimming. It is
essential that if people are using the carpark that they only park in allocated bays and not in the Doctor’s
spaces (whom rent this space from the Diocese). Yesterday, the coach dropping off our children after
swimming was in an extremely difficult position of being unable to turn and had to reverse out of the carpark
which resulted in the blocking of Berkeley Road and then had to deliver the children onto Kings Drive. It is
essential that our children have safe access back into school and it would be supportive of the school if you
could park elsewhere and walk into school.
EVENTS WEEK COMMENCING:

Parent Helpers Needed for our lovely new Library
We are very busy at the moment cataloguing all the books in the library and are hoping to have the library
fully functioning very soon. The children are all very excited and keen to borrow books to read and share at
home.
We would like to open the library twice a week at lunchtimes for children to borrow and return books. We will
also have an after school session for parents and children. However, to run the lunchtime sessions we will
need some parent volunteers to supervise our Year 6 library monitors. We would like at least 8 parent
volunteers who would be happy to help once a month. If you have an hour to spare once a month, please
contact Mrs Harris or Mrs Molloy as soon as possible. All volunteers will need a current DBS check. If you
do not have one please ask at the office.
YEAR 6 RECONCILLIATION
Year 6 have been invited to attend the service of reconciliation at St Bonaventure’s Church on Thursday
11th December at 6.00pm following on from their retreat at Kintbury. It will be just for year 6 staff and pupils
and is a lovely way for them to come together to share what they have learnt whilst on retreat at Kintbury.
Parents are invited to attend with their child, we expect the service to last about half an hour.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION 2015
ST BONAVENTURE’S CHURCH: If your child is in Year 3 or above and would like to make their First Holy
Communion at St Bonaventure’s Church next year, please write to Fr Michael or email him at [email protected] with the following information: child's name; class/school; date of birth; place of
baptism; your contact e-mail address and whether you are willing to help regularly with your child's group on
a Saturday. Children who are not yet baptised can also be included, as their baptism can take place during
the course. Due to numbers (60 children on average every year) we really need the help of parents and
carers to help run the classes. We provide loads of support and resources and those who get involved,
even if they have never done anything like it before, do seem to enjoy it! Closing date for applications is
30th November 2014.
There will be a meeting for parents and carers on Wednesday 14th January 2015 at 8pm with classes
starting on Saturday mornings at the start of March. The First Holy Communion Masses will be on Saturday
20 June (2.30 p.m) and Sunday 21 June (11.30 a.m) with the rehearsal on Sunday 14 June 2pm.
SACRED HEART CHURCH: Sacred Heart & St Antony's Churches are now taking applications for
preparation for First Holy Communion. If your child is in Year 3 or above and you would like them to take
part please complete and return an application form to the Sacred Heart parish office by 8th December.
Application forms are at the back of both Churches or can be printed from www.sacredheartchurch.co.uk

Come and sing or play your instrument at 9.30 Mass at St Bon's Church! We would love to
have more children and adults helping with the music at 9.30 Mass. Everyone welcome. There will
be a quick practice in the presbytery every week after 9.30 Mass to look at the music for the
following week. We can also copy music for you to take away. No pressure on anyone to play
everything or come every week; just do what you can. If you are interested in joining us or finding
out more, please contact Liz Romero on [email protected] - Thanks for your support.
