The Quest for Increased Student Achievement and Well-Being Inspiring Learning: Mobilizing Sustainable Improvement
On behalf of the staff of the York Region District School Board, I am very pleased to welcome you all to The Quest for
Increased Student Achievement and Well-Being: Inspiring Learning: Mobilizing Sustainable Improvement.

Each year, the Quest conference brings together members of the educational community to share ideas, engage in rich
dialogue, and be challenged and inspired. In the tradition of Quest, we will continue to build on our previous learning, going
deeper into promising practices and innovative solutions that support student achievement and well-being.
We are pleased to welcome educational experts from Ontario, across Canada and around the world who will share their
successes, challenges and learning with us. I look forward to the conversations that will begin in the next few days and
carry forward in the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
I wish you all the best for the conference as we continue to inspire learning.
J. Philip Parappally
Chair,

Anna DeBartolo
The Quest conference brings together educators, students, community members and experts from around the world who
share a common purpose – increased student achievement and well-being. On behalf of the York Region District School
Board trustees, I am pleased to welcome you to Quest and would like to thank you for being part of this important
conversation.
Everyone in the education community has a role to play in supporting student success and we welcome participants in a
diversity of roles to the conference. You all have valuable contributions to offer to the rich conversations that will take place
throughout the conference and beyond.
I hope that you will share and draw deeply from the experience, knowledge and ideas that will be exchanged over the next
three days, and that you will leave here inspired and prepared to improve the schools and systems that depend on your
leadership and engagement.
Thank you for joining us and helping to make the Quest conference a success.
Anna DeBartolo
Welcome
Chief Student Achievement Officer,
Ontario Ministry of Education
I am so pleased to join you at Quest 2014. I appreciate your professionalism and desire to learn and I am proud to be part
of the Quest experience.
As a province, we have come a long way. High quality teaching and learning are the norm across our province. As we move
forward with our new vision, we are committed to continuing to develop and support a high-quality teaching profession and
strong, inspired leadership at all levels of the public system. We are dedicated to nurturing graduates who are personally
successful, economically productive and actively engaged global citizens. We want our students to become critical, innovative
thinkers and risk takers; to have the courage to be adventurous, to speak their mind and to take risks. For we know that
they will enter a world that is more diverse, more technologically advanced and more competitive and collaborative than
ever before.
We know that there is still a lot to be done to realize a truly excellent and equitable education system in Ontario. We know
that we need to provide additional support for children and youth in care, for students with special needs and for Aboriginal
students, among others. And we need to focus on improved results and transitions for students in Applied classes. As well,
the Ontario spotlight continues to be on the teaching and learning of mathematics, an important part of our children's
future.
I look forward to the next few days of learning together at Quest as we mobilize further to sustain and extend
improvements in our work.
