Scripture Reflections for THIS WEEK
Scripture Reflections for NEXT WEEK
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
A little over a year ago,
many people were
eager to hear about the
birth of the newest
heir to the British
throne, Prince George.
What makes people so interested? Does the whole
idea of royalty capture our imagination and give us a
“fairy tale” moment—a chance to live in a simpler
time (at least to our childhood selves)?
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus
Christ, King of the Universe. This story is emphatically
not a fairy tale, and not like any king we’ve
experienced or read about here on earth.
This King comes as one who was obedient to his
Father, even to death on a cross.
This King comes, raised from the dead, to destroy
death and put all things under his reign. This King also
comes as a shepherd to gather his scattered sheep, bind
their wounds, and give them pasture.
And this King gathers the nations before him to judge
not by how powerful they were, but how they cared
for the least among them.
On the last Sunday of the Church year, before we
turn our faces again toward incarnation and birth, we
remind ourselves that we are still on a journey with
the King of kings and that he will come again. It’s part
of the Eucharistic Prayer in the Acclamation of Faith at
every liturgy: “We proclaim your death, O Lord, and
profess your Resurrection until you come again”
[emphasis added].
Let us strive to be even more eager, more joyful, and
more prepared for this King to come than we were for
Prince George.
Let us begin now to live into the new life he has given
us.
Mary Katharine Deeley

First Reading
Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7(2B)
Isaiah prophesized, “All our good deeds are like
polluted rags; we have all withered like leaves…We
are the clay and you are the potter: we are the work of
your hands.
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 1:3-9
Paul, “God is faithful and by him you were called to
fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. You are
not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the
revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Gospel
Mark 13:33-37
Jesus said, “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know
when the time will come…Watch, therefore” whether
at sunset, midnight, cock crow, or sunrise. “Watch!”
WATCH, STAY AWAKE AND BE ALERT!
No one knows when the Messiah
will come; therefore, Jesus is clear in
his warning to disciples to watch,
stay awake and be alert. Jesus does
not want disciples to miss the
opportunity; he does not want
distractions to get in the way of our
seeing the presence of God in our midst. Seeing God
and knowing that he is present despite perils or
hardships gives us hope that God’s saving power can
be found clearly among his people.

“…as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you

Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us.
We are generous when we have the time or the money.
But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving
of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness, mercy
when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our
schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
Word of Life…
“[T]he courage and grace shown by
those women who choose life—in the
face of fear, uncertainty, parental or partner
intimidation, seemingly insurmountable odds—make
them today's heroes. They are joined by the many who
counsel, support and nurture them both before and
after the birth of their child. Such self-giving love…is
powerfully transformative of mother, of child, of
families, of cultures.”

CHILDREN’S LITURGY DURING THE ADVENT SEASON
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a
special time during the Mass when we
minister to the children in a special way.
Before the first reading all the children
who are attending 5:30 PM Mass will be
called to the middle aisle by the priest
and then sent forth with leaders to a special place to hear
the Word of the Lord, a child’s homily, creed, and prayers of
the faithful. The children will return to the Church at the
offertory of the Mass.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word begins next Saturday,
November 29th and will continue throughout the Advent
Season at the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday evenings. Please
join us for this Special Children’s Liturgy.

KING OF ALL CREATION
Father all-powerful, God of love, you have raised our
Lord Jesus Christ from death to life, resplendent in glory
as King of Creation. Open our hearts, free all the world to
rejoice in His peace, to glory in His justice to live His love.
- Alternative Opening Prayer,
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
The image that this prayer gives – of rejoicing in peace,
glorying in justice, and living in love – describes nothing
less than the reign of God that Christ came to establish.
As such, this prayer points us toward the end of time
when our risen King shall return in the glory of God.
At that time, the ancient promises of God will be fulfilled.
Peace, justice, and love are the hallmarks of the messianic
reign. They are the telltale elements that describe the
kingdom of God.
Today’s solemnity, established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI in
response to the rise of totalitarianism, was originally
celebrated on the last Sunday of October, just before All
Saints Day. It was later moved to this last Sunday of the
Liturgical Year, in place of the Thirty-Fourth Sunday in
Ordinary Time. As the liturgical scholar Adolf Adams
states, this date makes it clear that “the exalted Lord and
King is the goal not only of the liturgical year but of our
entire earthy pilgrimage.
As the Last Sunday of the Liturgical Year 2012, we are
pointed toward the end of time itself and the return of
our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the entire universe. We
are encouraged to look forward to this time with hope,
not with fear and anxiety.

The Priests, Deacons, Brothers, Sisters
and staff of Queen of Peace wish to extend
THANKSGIVING BLESSINGS
to all the members of our parish family.
It’s that time of year again when the
North Arlington Fire Department
will be escorting Santa Claus
through the streets of North
Arlington in a grand parade. Every
year Santa takes the time out of his
busy schedule to stop by North Arlington on the Saturday
after Thanksgiving to greet all of the boys and girls of the
town. This year, Santa once again will be asking a special
favor of all of the children of North Arlington. In order to
help the less fortunate of our community, Santa, the Fire
Department and First Aid Squad will be collecting food for
the Food Pantry here at Queen of Peace. Our Food Pantry
operates throughout the year and is open to any resident
that has a need for food in the community. If you would like
to help Santa in this endeavor, he will be collecting any
canned, boxed, or non-perishable food items that do not
require refrigeration. There will be several trucks in the
parade that will stop to collect any food items that you may
wish to donate. You can also bring them to Fire
Headquarters, 3 Legion Place (behind Boro Hall). Santa and
friends will be here on Saturday morning November 29th.
GIFT TAG PROJECT
The St. Vincent DePaul Society sponsors
this very special event. The Christmas
Gift Tag Project supports several
worthwhile organizations dedicated to
assisting the needs of mothers and infants, as well as nursing
homes and hospitals taking care of the sick and elderly.
The project will begin the weekend of November 22 & 23
and run through the weekend of December 13 & 14.
Please consider helping those less fortunate by taking a
tag from one of the boards either at the back of the
Church or at the Ridge Road entrance. Purchase the gift
listed on the tag, wrap the gift and attach the tag to the
package, then return it to Church by December 14.
What a great way to share your blessings and put a smile
on someone’s face.
