In this season we have two important events taking place: Thanksgiving baskets and the Thanksgiving offering. This year we are increasing our goal of 500 baskets to 600 baskets. The need is great, and it is such a blessing to help those who are in need with a Thanksgiving meal. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find the details of what is needed. Remember, it’s the food that goes with the turkey that is needed; the turkey is provided by the Deacons Dr. Rob Zinn, Pastor through the benevolence fund. The Thanksgiving offering was started years ago and is used as a way to say thank you to the Lord for His grace and blessings to our church and to meet the needs that have come up that we do not have funds for in the budget. As you look through the needs, you will see that many are for missions, some are for worship and music ministry, and others are for general needs. As you pray, remember what the Lord has done for you, and with a grateful heart, give a gift back to Him. It is the season of giving, and I want to thank you in advance for the part you will play. Thanks for the blessing of being your REDUCING THE STRESS OF THE SEASON MARK RUSH, executive pastor I listed this post last year at the beginning of the holiday season and with October almost over and Thanksgiving and Christmas bearing down on us, I thought it would be a good reminder. Ron Edmonson is a guy whose blog I follow pretty regularly. As we head into the holiday season I felt it might be good to do an article on reducing the stress of the season. Here are Ron’s seven suggestions on way he reduces stress. Prayer – God really does answer this request. When I’m really stressed out, I get alone with God. Time Management – Most times a well planned schedule will greatly diminish stress. I try to plan my activities at the beginning of the week in a way that allows for unexpected interruptions, yet still also allows me to complete the tasks required of me. Exercise – This may be my best secret for battling stress. The more stressed I am the more I need to run. I’ve been known to disappear on a busy day to get some exercise. Disciplined Life – There are activities and habits that add to stress. If you stay up way too late and never get enough rest, your stress-factor will increase. When I’m especially stressed, I try to build in down time and time just for me. Balance - I have learned to say “No” to some things and balance my time between all the things that pull for my attention. Not allowing problems to build long without addressing them – If (Continued on Page 2) REDUCING STRESS... (Continued from Page 1) FALL IS HERE! MARK RUSH, executive pastor RICK YORK, minister of children and young families a relationship is causing stress, the sooner I deal with it the less likely I am to stress about it. If I need to make the hard decisions…make the now…the sooner…the less long-term stress it brings. Asking for help - When I am really at my limit with stress, I am not too proud to tell someone. I have learned to delegate well. As we enter into this time of Thanksgiving, let me share a very humbling passage of scripture. I Thess. 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” I very often hear of people desiring to know God’s will. Well, here it is! What would your life look like if you rejoiced ALWAYS? If you prayed WITHOUT CEASING? If you gave thanks IN EVERYTHING? Not for everything but in everything! Oh, did you mean that you want to know whom you will marry, where you will live, or what you will do for a living? There is so much more to God’s will than these three questions! His will is that we rejoice, pray and give thanks! And so I rejoice in the wife of my youth! This month, Chris and I celebrate our 40th anniversary! I pray for at least 20 more. And I thank God for a loving, Godly, faithful wife and best friend. And I thank God for a marriage that overcame a very difficult beginning, many ups and downs and continues to grow stronger every day. Our marriage, while not perfect, grows stronger every day because we continue to work on it. Our goal is not – to not get divorced, but to have a great marriage! And that takes work. We have read many books on Biblical marriage and we have lead many studies because great marriages don’t just happen. If you are married, would you consider joining our Wednesday evening study on Biblical marriage? We are currently in Love and Respect, with another book to follow. Our church has many marriages that are in trouble, many mediocre marriages and many solid ones. But no perfect ones! I look forward to seeing more marriages grow in Christ. To Him be the glory of our marriages. My additional thoughts are this. It is good to make sure that your Bible intake remains constant at all times but especially during the hectic times that the holiday brings with it. This allows your mind to be renewed (Romans 12:2) and refreshed. It is also a great reminder to be anxious for nothing and to be steadfast in prayer and thanksgiving (Phil. 4:6-7). I pray that this helps as we all head into another busy holiday season! GOD’S NOT DEAD AL LE BRUN, minister of senior adults A recent movie with this title depicts an atheist philosophy professor planning to forgo “dusty theological arguments,” insisting that the new students declare that God is dead. Unable to do this Josh (Shane Harper) is challenged to defend his faith and prove to the class that God’s not dead. According to Psalms 104 the Lord God, Creator of all things, is not only real and alive but is personally involved with all of His creation 24/7 – all the time. From the heavens to every plant and tree on earth God is at work to supply their needs. He feeds and gives drink to every beast of the field (verse 11) and the sea with its swarms without number, animals both small and great (verse 25). “They all wait for you to give them their food in due season” (verse 27). Yes, the table of the Lord is set continually! “Let us give thanks to our God, calling upon His name and make known His deeds among the peoples.” (Psalm 105:1) On behalf of Immanuel’s Young at Heart Senior Adult ministry have a Happy Thanksgiving season. GIVING THANKS JASON BARKER, minister of education As we close in on Thanksgiving, our thoughts turn toward the things for which we are grateful: family, friends, salvation, God’s provision and blessings, and many more. Instead of providing some personal thoughts on the matter, I thought it would be best to give some biblical reminders of the importance for giving thanks. • Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) • Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6) • Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men. (1 Timothy 2:1) • Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! (2 Corinthians 9:15) • Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:17) • Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. (Psalm 118:1) • Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endures forever. (Psalm 107:1) As you are able, give some time to meditating on these wonderful truths during this Thanksgiving season. It is something we have done for years and it is an opportunity to do more than our budget will allow. Below is a list of needs that have come to our attention. I’m asking you to pray, believe, and give. Thank you for helping to meet these needs. May the Lord bless you for your generous heart. In His grace, Coffee Ministry - $5,000 Vancouver Church Planting - $15,000 These funds will continue to aid in planting churches in a VERY un-churched area of the world. This city is home to 200 different languages and is less than 5% Christian. In 2012 through the Thanksgiving Offering we raised $40,000 to help fund new ministry centers in the city. This will help to continue the work that is well under way. Thailand Key Partnership (Marriage Retreat - $12,000 The marriage retreat is for IMB personnel in the region of SE Asia. This is a spiritually dark area for our IMB personnel and this marriage retreat will provide strength to our families who are serving there. A team of 10-12 people from Immanuel will be going to lead and support his important project. Zero Turn Mower - $9,600 Our existing zero turn commercial mower is used to cut the ball fields and all other large areas of turf on campus and is used several times throughout the week. The mower is over 11 years old, has been maintained properly, and various components have been replaced to keep it operating. It would not be cost effective to replace the remaining original parts that could stop functioning at any time. It will be used until it ceases operating and then the new mower will be purchased. Cambodia Partnership - $5,000 These funds will aid Tim and Laura Bingaman, our missionaries to Cambodia, in reaching the people of Cambodia with the Gospel. Wales Project - $8,00 Fourth of July Fireworks - $15,000 Wireless In-Ear System - $7,500 The current monitor system for the singers is failing and we are bound by the outdated and limited feature set. A major problem we face is the singers sound great around a piano during rehearsal but when they get on the stage they often sing out of tune because they cannot hear themselves or the other singers. A new system would solve this and it would give us the flexibility, quality and reliability that our volunteer musicians need to perform at a higher level. Graphics Computer - $3,500 This is the computer that produces all of the graphics seen on the screens (lyrics, sermon notes, etc.). This computer needs to be replaced every three years to keep up with the software requirements. It has been three years since our current computer has been replaced. The old one would be repurposed in the media department. Assisted Listening Devices (10) - $1,700 We need to add more devices to our current system to accommodate the demand. During the 9:00 service there are not enough devices for those who need them. Computer Upgrades - $7,700 These funds will be put into a reserve account to ensure that adequate funds are available for computer upgrades (servers, software, workstations, etc.) that are not covered through the Immanuel budget. TOTAL - $90,000 This will help fund two interns to assist John Robinson, who leads this key strategic partnership, in church planting in Wales. Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.
