FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends of Saint Kevin,
The title of today’s feast emphasizes the kingship of Jesus. As we look
at the prayers for this Mass, we find that Jesus is addressed as “King of the
Universe,” “King of creation,” and “universal King.” His kingdom is “truth and
life,” “holiness and grace,” and “justice, love and peace.” In what appears to be
a contrast to the theme of kingship, the Scripture readings today focus on the
image of Jesus as shepherd and the final judgment.
This feast of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is relatively recent to
the liturgical calendar. It was instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI in response to
the growing trends of secularism and materialism. It is a reminder of the
fundamental belief that Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord, is the essential life giving
force that governs all creation both as king and as shepherd.
The prophet Ezekiel wrote during the Babylonian exile approximately 600 years before the birth of Jesus.
During the time of their oppression, he reminded the Israelites of God’s promise to save them. God will do this,
not as a king or great warrior, but rather as a gentle shepherd, one who will tend his flock, and rescue them from
all the places where they were scattered. The strays, the injured and the sick will be looked after. God will judge
between the rams and the goats, and the sleek and the strong will be destroyed. How can a shepherd do this? It
can only come about when the shepherd is the Lord our God.
Saint Paul begins his address to the Corinthians by reminding them that Christ has been raised from the
dead. Because of this, all who fall asleep in Christ will also be raised from the dead at the end of time. When
will this occur? No one knows the day or the hour. Saint Paul says that the final judgment will come when
Christ has brought all power and sovereignty under his authority and destroyed death.
Paul had good reason to address this message to the people of Corinth. Corinth was a bustling
commercial center where just about anything could be bought and sold. For the Christians in Corinth, the
temptation to fall back into their old ways was always present. Paul reminded them of their dignity as believers
in the Risen Lord, and that they would be held accountable at the last judgment for the way they chose to live
their lives.
We return to the image of Jesus the shepherd in today’s Gospel. This time however, Jesus is seen as the
shepherd who will separate the sheep and the goats at the last judgment. And how will he decide who will be
chosen and who will be rejected? His answer is straightforward. Those who feed, clothe, give drink, welcome
others and visit prisoners will be chosen. Those who fail to treat Jesus this way will cut themselves off from their
relationship with God. Jesus presents this choice to each of us. How will we treat the least in our midst?
On behalf of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the parish staff, and myself, I wish to extend to all a blessed
Thanksgiving. Take this opportunity to thank God for His many blessings in all our lives.
Sincerely in Christ,
Father John C. Moloney

A Message from the Pastoral & Youth Minister
Mr. Jeffery Braconnier
Dear St. Kevin Community,
As the holiday season gets closer and closer, I am sure your
schedules are becoming busier and busier! Please consider though,
during that busy time, what you can do for your parish. With over 30
ministries, there is a place for everyone.
There are six different opportunities to receive the Eucharist
in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on any given weekend at the parish. I
ask that you help us increase that awareness to your family, friends
and neighbors. As I always I say, if you or someone you know would
like to get involved in the Mass, please let me know.
I hope you can join us for our 3rd Annual Christmas Lighting
on Saturday, December 13th after the 5:30pm Mass. I will begin the
decorating process starting on Monday, November 17th. If you or
someone you know is interested in helping, please contact me.
Thank you for all you do for our parish!
Peace and Harmony,
Jeffrey P. Braconnier

SAINT KEVIN PARISH NURSES
Parish Nurses will be taking blood pressures on
Sunday, December 7th and January 11th after
the 9:30 and 11:00 Masses. High blood pressure is a common
medical condition which affects one in three adults. Because there
are often no warning symptoms, it is a good idea to monitor it
periodically. If left untreated it can increase your risk for heart
disease such as a heart attack or stroke. It will only take a few
minutes of your time to stop and have your BP checked.

Study Reveals Better Maternal Health Possible Where
Abortion Prohibited by Law by HLI Staff
A report based on new research from Chile demonstrates that
legal abortions are not any safer than illegal abortions. Researchers at the
MELISA Institute have analyzed data which shows “that not only abortionrelated mortality continued its decreasing trend in Chile after its prohibition
by law in 1989, but also hospital discharges due to abortion have
significantly decreased during the last decade.”
The scientific study, conducted by Doctor Elard Koch,
epidemiologist and Director of Research at the MELISA Institute, states
that the Chilean experience supports what is to many the paradox that
“even under a less permissive abortion legislation, maternal health
indicators can be significantly improved by other factors, including a
noteworthy reduction in mortality and morbidity associated to abortion.”
An ongoing study by the institute also suggests that pregnant
women who feel coerced and fearful (accounting for 70% of over 3,000 in
the study who have an unplanned pregnancy) are at a higher risk of
terminating the pre-born child. To prevent abortion, the data suggests the
development and promotion of maternal support programs to address
vulnerable women’s needs, resulting in 69-94% giving birth to their babies
at full term.
