Foreword
The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) believes that each and every nurse in
Australia should have the opportunity to grow their career and further our profession.
ACN provides nurses with tools to plan their career pathway, educational supports,
opportunities to network and participate in professional forums and a range of
benefits that stem from being part of a profession that is moving in the right direction.
The College of Nursing, which is a part of ACN, is a Registered Training
Organisation (RTO) approved to deliver nationally accredited training with the Australian Skills Quality
Authority. Here, we provide you with a comprehensive guide to the July – November 2014 continuing
professional development (CPD) courses on offer.
Our postgraduate and CPD courses cater for all nurses, in every stage of their career. ACN clinical courses
are co-developed with industry partners, ensuring participants engage in current evidence-based practices
and are career-focussed, assuring a valuable experience.
In 2010, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (National Board) introduced registration requirements
for nurses and midwives to accrue 20 hours of CPD each year. In this handbook, each CPD course
description outlines the number of CPD hours you will gain.
ACN embraces various forms of education delivery – customised education, distance education (DE),
specialty courses, face-to-face, online and webinars, or a combination of these. Our face-to-face CPD
programs are offered across Australia with scheduled courses in ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC and WA.
Continued growth in knowledge is one of the hallmarks of a profession, and as nurses and midwives, we
are individually responsible for improving and broadening our knowledge, expanding our expertise and

Education at ACN
ACN offers a wide range of educational opportunities for registered and enrolled nurses, in addition to the
CPD program.
ACN is one of the largest providers of quality postgraduate nursing education in Australia, and offers
single DE subjects which can be credited towards a postgraduate degree.
The Assessment of Competence Program is a comprehensive eight-week course for nurses seeking to
re-enter the workforce and for internationally qualified nurses seeking registration with the National Board.
ACN is a registered higher education provider and The College of Nursing, which is a part of ACN, is a
registered training organisation. We offer nationally accredited training for enrolled nurses, including a
medication management course, the Diploma of Nursing and the Advanced Diploma of Nursing.
The range of learning modes allows students the flexibility to study at a time that is convenient. With
many of our courses offered in DE and online modes, distance is no barrier to studying with us. Students
Australia-wide and around the world can be assured that wherever they are, they will be fully supported
by skilled nurse educators and tutors, who will assist them, identify their learning needs, and facilitate
online discussions, where available.
Our Customised Education and Consultative Service (CECS) provides educational programs designed
to meet your organisation’s specific needs. The courses are delivered at your facility by expert clinicians
who understand the health care environment.

Enrolment information
Application criteria
Applicants are required to be a nurse currently registered or enrolled with the National Board or, for
non-Australian residents, the jurisdiction in which they work and reside. Applicants must provide proof
of current registration/enrolment with their application form. ACN reserves the right to offer admission to
other health professionals registered with the relevant health profession board in Australia on receipt of a
written application.
How to apply
Application forms are available directly from ACN’s website. Send your enrolment form with the course
fee, so that it reaches ACN no later than 14 working days before the course commencement date.
Course places are assigned in order of receipt of applications. Successful applicants will be notified on
receipt of their application.
Nurses employed by the NSW Ministry of Health (MOH) are eligible to apply for those places identified as
supported by NSW Health. Places are allocated in order of receipt of application. There are limited places
also available for fee-paying nurses in these courses.
All course dates and locations are subject to change without notice.
Course fees
Please see table of fees on page 8 for specific course information. Fees are correct at time of printing but
are subject to change without notice.
Refund policy
Please choose your course carefully. Refunds for CPD courses will be given only where a minimum of 10
working days’ notice prior to the commencement date is given. There is a non-refundable administration
fee of $75.00 for all CPD refunds. Applications for refund made less than 10 working days prior to the
commencement date will not receive a refund. In these instances the applicant will be issued with a credit
note. Credit notes must be redeemed within 12 months of the date of issue. A $75.00 administration fee
will be charged on re-application.
Online CPD courses
There are no refunds for online CPD courses.

Cancellation policy
Students paying for air travel to attend a course are advised to obtain travel insurance to cover potential
losses in the event of course cancellation. ACN reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course at
any time for any reason as determined by ACN. If ACN cancels a course, the full course fee, including the
administration fee, will be refunded.
Member discounts
ACN members are entitled to the discounted membership rate on all CPD courses.
Goods and services tax
ACN is obliged to charge GST on all continuing education courses.

a quality assurance process, whereby CPD
activities for nurses are assessed and endorsed
against a set of quality criteria developed inline with professional nursing and education
requirements.

training. Nurses attending an ACN endorsed

nurses to meet the 20 CPD hours required as
part of their annual renewal requirements of
authority to practice.
