INSTITUTTLEDERENS LEDER
Denne uken har mange vært aktive med søknader. Totalt endte vi med å søke om 174 millioner fra NFR, bare fra dette instituttet. Fire
av søknadene går inn til det nye toppforskprogrammet. Med tanke på at tilslagsprosenten
fra NFR kun kan gå oppover i forhold til sist år,
ser vi lyst på tilgangen av forfriskende midler
for neste år.

Som nevnt tidligere er vi i en kritisk situasjon
når det gjelder gjennomføringen av mastergradseksamener. Det skal avholdes om lag 40
eksamener i løpet av de neste fire ukene, og
vi trenger folk til å stille opp som internsensorer. Oppfordring om å stille i denne rollen går
nå til alle vitenskapelig ansatte, og ikke bare til de som sitter i eksamenskommisjonen. For å gjøre det litt mer
attraktiv å ta på seg denne rollen vil vi ved neste korsvei endre fordelingsnøkkelen for annumstildelingen, slik at
også deltagelse i kommisjonene vil gi bidrag her. Om du ekspansive planer for neste år, ta raskt kontakt med Dieter
slik du kan få booket et godt antall deltagelser, og dermed se frem til et oppgradert annum.

Petroleumsforskningen ved Universitetet i Bergen er på et ledende internasjonalt nivå,
ifølge en evaluering av teknologifagene i Norge. Et av hovedområdene til forskningsgruppen i petroleums- og prosessteknologi er mer bærekraftig energiproduksjon av
fossile brensler, og da spesielt såkalt Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage. I praksis
betyr det å på samme tid lagre og nyttiggjøre seg innfanget CO2 fra industriutslipp, for

FELLESSEMINAR VED IFT - PHYSICS COLLOQUIUM
SEEING WITH HELIUM ATOMS: THE NEEUTRAL HELIUM MICROSCOPE

Recent years have shown significant advances in the development of a novel imaging technique based on the
matter wave properties of a helium beam. This new technology called scanning helium atom microscopy (SHeM)
offers a unique capability of delivering high resolution imaging with no damage in a fast, reproducible manner (the
helium beam provides a very well defined surface probe). The young and still small SHeM community is strongly
connected with one of its leading research groups placed here at UiB. Presently there are only four SHeM instruments existing, with the only two SHeMs which utilize a focused helium beam approach being stationed in Bergen.

OPTICS AND ATOMIC PHYSICS GROUP
I am 35 years old, and was born and raised in the
Mubende District in Uganda.
I am employed at Makerere University Kampala in
Uganda as a Lecturer in the Department of Physics,
College of Natural sciences. I have several sons and
daughters who are in age range 1-10 years.
Right now I’m here in Bergen as a post doctorate
fellow in the Optics and Atomic physics group. We
are working on an interdisciplinary project with title: Hyperspectral imaging in biophysics and energy
physics. This project is a collaboration between Department of Physics and Technology (UiB) and Department of Mathematical Sciences and Technology
at Norwegian University of life sciences (NMBU).

In this study we mainly focus on understanding the
scattering and absorption of light by particles/cells.
The particles can be living cells or non living cells.
When light interacts with both non living and living
particles it’s absorbed and scattered differently by
different cells. The scattering and absorption behaviour of cells will depend on size, shape, external
structure of the cell (rough or smooth surface) and
the internal structure of the particle/cells
(absorbing or non absorbing material). We do study
scattering properties of cells with different shapes,
spherical or non-spherical.

We do also study scattering of light by
rough surfaces since one of the features of
biological cells is the roughness of their cell
membranes and internal structures on the
scale of the scattering wavelength.
Knowledge about scattering and absorption of light is important in food science
since from past scientific research its well
known that light scattering is related to the
texture of fruit and meat. Also skin cancer
can be detected by comparing the scattering properties of abnormal and normal
cells. Faults in solar panels can be detected
by looking at the scattering properties of
silicon wafers. The challenge we are working on in this project is the development of
models/tools for accurate description of
scattering properties of particles.
Apart from lecturing in Uganda, I have
been engaged in solar PV wiring in houses.
In Uganda we have enough sunshine that
can be harnessed and used in our homes
for lighting, cooking etc. So I have made
solar cookers and solar dryers on a small
scale that I have used to cook simple foods
like spaghetti and rice. I do farming at
home.

WORKSHOP: ETHICS APPRAISAL PROCEDURE
Writing the ethics section in a proposal is somewhat of a formidable task. We often leave it to the last minute
and find ourselves looking through EU directives in a language only the EU Commission understands. If you are in
the contract negotiation phase, you have an on-going project or you plan a submission soon, here’ s your chance
to get a grip on the Ethics section of the proposal.
Research Programme Manager Agni Kortsidaki, from the European Commission is coming to UiB on Tuesday June
16th to lead the workshop "Ethics Appraisal Procedure."
Information will be provided on how to fill in the ethics self-assessment of the proposal and how to deal with
the requirements of the ethics screening or assessment.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion for questions, clarifications, concerns. Various examples will be
given for a better understanding of the ethics issues which may be raised by a research.
At the workshop the ethics appraisal procedure will be explained. Some of the issues covered will be:

The relevant Grant Agreement Articles
The ethics appraisal steps
The role and tasks of the applicants, the scientific evaluators and the ethics experts
The requirements and recommendations generated by the appraisal
The role of ethics advisors and ethics mentors
The aim of the workshop is for the participants to familiarize themselves with the EC ethics appraisal procedure, to
better prepare for future proposals and also to get information on how to deal with ethics checks during the lifetime of projects.

MSCA INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP INFORMATION AND PROPOSAL WRITING WORKSHOP
Tirsdag, 9. juni kommer NCP Ian Devine fra UKRO til UiB for å holde en Marie Sklowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowships (IF) information and proposal writing workshop.
Individual Fellowships (IF) er lønnsmidler i tillegg til institusjonelle tilskudd til dyktige, kreative og mobile forskere.
Midlene er tilgjengelige som et postdok-stipend til erfarne forskere med mere enn fire
års forskererfaring eller en ph.d.-grad og gis for opphold i og uten for Europa. Individual
Fellowships (IF) har årlige utlysninger. Budsjett for 2015 er 215 millioner euro.
