Calling all Artists!
Help us keep the memory
of the beech tree alive.
“Artists view the world differently. They can help us see our
surroundings in remarkable ways, create icons that last in the
mind, and encourage new ways of thinking.”
When the majestic beech tree came down in the fall, the
Board of Trustees ensured that a good supply of wood was
harvested for use in making furniture for the library. The wood
is currently being stored in a local shop where it is undergoing
a drying process. This process could take up to a year or more
but we feel it is worth the wait. The plan is to design and
build furniture such as a conference table for Cooper Hall and
perhaps a bench or side table for the main library.
We are seeking images that highlight the many remarkable places in
and around the Village and Town of Southampton that newcomers and
residents visit: shops, restaurants, historic sites, beaches, etc.
The cost has been estimated at between $12,000 and
$15,000. The Library Trustees invite the community to become
a part of this project and have begun a fundraising campaign.

Tuesday Movie Stories We Tell
Sarah Polley, director. 108 minutes, rated PG-13
Tuesday, February 4, 7:00 p.m.
Director Sarah Polley good-naturedly interviews and interrogates a cast
of characters of varying reliability and is given strikingly honest, yet mostly
contradictory, responses to the same questions. As each relates their
version of the family history, recollections morph into nostalgic memories
of their mother, who departed too soon, leaving behind unanswered
questions. Polley reveals the essence of family: complicated, warm, and
loving. “An unconventional but wonderfully assembled exploration of
how – and why – we tell stories, all wrapped in a closely guarded family
secret” (Mike Scott, Times Picayune). RMP900

Letter from the
Friends of the Library
2013 was a very successful year for the Friends. Through our
membership dues, donations and our popular book sale, we
were able to help the library enrich life for people throughout
our community. Here are just some of the library programs we
supported:
• Reading clubs for adults, children and teens
• F ree museum passes for The Museum of Natural History,
Intrepid Air & Space Museum, The Guggenheim, MoMA,
Frick, Museum of the City of New York, New York Historical
Society, CMEE, and the Parrish Art Museum.
• Classical and jazz concerts
• Scholarships for local high school students
Family Department
The Rogers Memorial Library wants to make sure that your child is among twothirds of the Americans who carry the best card in the world – a LIBRARY CARD.
Studies show that children who are read to and use the library perform better in
school and grow to be lifelong readers, learners and library users.Your child’s
card also provides access to library programs. Please visit the Circulation Desk
to obtain cards for your children and/or update your cards.
In an effort to ensure children and families get the most out of library
programs, please be present at the start of each program for which you are
registered. Program participation will be made available to patrons on the
registered waiting list 10 minutes after the start of each program, and then
patrons on the stand-by list 10 minutes after the start of each program.
In our first-ever solicitation to local businesses, we were very
grateful to receive generous contributions from Tate’s Bake Shop,
Golden Pear Cafe South, A Butler’s Manor, the Southampton
Chamber of Commerce, Cook Maran & Associates, Fellingham’s,
Hampton Realty Enterprises, Old Towne Garden Club, Herrick
Hardware and Tim Blenk Tree Care.

special thanks go out to Tony Valle, Jorge Maya and Mike
Dmitrash for help with our book sale. To David Janku for his
help with our membership rolls, to Yvette Postelle and Linda
