festival to spice up

Area students make Waiting for the toss
university honor roll
LAWRENCE – Six Thomas
County students were among those
who earned honor roll distinction
for the spring 2009 semester.
The students are from the Lawrence campus and the KU Medical
Center in Kansas City.
The honor roll includes undergraduates who met requirements
in the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences and in the schools of
Allied Health, Architecture and
Urban Planning, Business, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts,
Journalism, Nursing and Social
Welfare.

The Daughters of Isabella will
have a pie and ice cream booth
and the Youth Pride will have a
concession stand.
There will be free pony rides
from 6-8 p.m. on the west side of
Main Street, and Ladder Golf returns this year with cash prizes for
teams of two (all ages) from 6:30
to 8 p.m. at the ball park.
There will be turtle races — no
snapping turtles — sponsored by
Huelsman Storage. For details,
call (785) 824-3406. Also on the
docket is a cavalry re-enactment
from 7:15 to 8 p.m.
Youngsters can participate in the
greased-pig contest sponsored by
Grinnell Locker and L&D farms.
Contestants must sign up by 7:30
p.m., with start time set at 8 p.m.
Cash prizes will be awarded.
The evening will end with a
fireworks display sponsored by
the City of Grinnell and the festival committee.

The 35th annual Grinnell AfterHarvest Festival will run Friday to
Sunday, July 17 to 19, featuring
basketball, golf and T-Ball, drawings, a dance, barbecue, ice cream
and cake, turtle races, pony rides,
a cavalry re-enactment, a greasedpig contest and, to cap it all off,
fireworks.
If enough people enter by Friday, there will be a three-on-three
basketball tournament and a co-ed
softball tournament beginning at 4
p.m. in the city park. To sign up,

The main festival gets going
Saturday afternoon. The Heritage
Center will be open from 2-4 p.m.
Supporters will be selling tickets
for a drawing for a handmade quilt
and one for 200 bushels of wheat.
There will be an outdoor dance
at 9 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, with Marty Melia as
deejay.
A Knights of Columbus twoman scramble golf tournament
tees off at 9 a.m. Sunday.
There will be a T-ball game from
4-5 p.m. that day. The Smokin’
BBQ contest, with cash prizes in
categories for chicken, ribs, brisket and pork butt, will be judged

will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at
the Dream Theatre in Russell in a
concert sponsored by the Deines
Cultural Center.
The group comprises four musicians, three of whom are owners
of the Diamond W Chuckwagon
dinner show at the Old Cowtown
Museum in Wichita.
Stu Stuart, a native Kansan,
is the lead singer, lead guitarist
and fiddler. His grandfather, Hal
O’Halloran was chief announcer
on WLS Radio in Chicago, hosting the WLS Barn Dance show.
Stuart played in a series of bluegrass and country bands, ending
up in Nashville, where he formed
a country band called Hank Flamingo.
He met Jim Farrell in Nashville.
They formed a group called J38
