MUSIC BOOSTERS CARNIVAL
By Alyssa Reese
On Feburary 13th, 2010, there is a very big event. The Music Department at
our school is hosting our annual Music Boosters Carnival from 5 to 9 p.m. Every
year, we sell raffle tickets to help raise money for the trips that the high school
band and choir take. We also use the time to share some time with people we
don’t usually talk to or see every day. It is a lot of fun for the students to set up the
booths and decorating them is the best part. I really encourage everyone to come
and support us and have a fun time with family and/or friends. See you there!!!

Minnesota Stereotypes
By Ryan Oye
By Sydney Boelman
Every state is known for something. Florida is the
sunshine state and the people from Wisconsin are all
cheese heads. Some of the stereotypes are understandable
like Florida’s because most of the time it’s nice and sunny
out, but others are just things people assume. Not everyone likes what their state is known for and I just happen to
be one of those people.
“Minnesota must be enjoying this cold weather.”
“It’s even pretty chilly out for the people of Minnesota
today.” Hearing this is very frustrating because it’s making it sound like everyone from Minnesota loves the cold
weather or it’s always cold here. We aren’t the only state to
get snow in the winter so it’s not fair to be pegged with a
reputation like that.
The cold isn’t the only thing people “know” Minnesota for. Minnesota is also known for being full of country
bumpkins. Do they seriously think that we all are a bunch
of hicks who only live on farms and ride horses everywhere? They make it sound like the rest of the world has
an advance in technology and we are stuck in the past.
Also, with these not so glorious things people think
about us, there are some that aren’t so horrible. Minnesota
is known for having people who are courteous, mild mannered and just downright nice people. That’s something
that I don’t mind being known as.
Stereotypes aren’t always bad, but sometimes people
don’t like them. There seems to be nothing we can do
about it, so I guess we’ll just have to live with it.
January 12, 2010, 4:53 p.m. a massive earthquake struck the
Caribbean island of Haiti. The earthquake measured 7.0 in magnitude, the biggest earthquake in 200 years. The earthquake struck
less than 10 miles from Haiti’s capital city of Port-Au-Prince. The
initial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater than
magnitude of 5.0. The presidential palace in Port-Au-Prince collapsed as did many other buildings including offices, hotels, shops
and schools, burying hundreds, possibly thousands of people beneath the rubble.
Millions of people are displaced and thousands are feared
dead as rescue teams from all over the world are descending on
Haiti to help where they are able.
Bodies are being piled along the streets of the capital city.
Many are covered by sheets, which are being lifted by survivors
looking for their loved ones. Haiti is in massive need of food, water
and medicine, as well as bulldozers and heavy lifting equipment. It
is a race against time to find survivors trapped under the rubble of
collapsed buildings.
The international Red Cross initially estimated 45,000 to
50,000 people were killed in the earthquake. They now fear that
there may be more than 200,000 dead from this massive earth-

Today, my dad woke me up for school. How did he do this? He played Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb” from downstairs because he knew I would get up as
fast as I can to turn it off. It worked. Good thinking, dad. MLIA
Today, I had a dream about Taylor Swift singing a song about potatoes. The lyrics rhymed perfectly. I’m not even a big fan of Taylor Swift, but I think
this was the best dream I have ever had. MLIA

Whenever I sleep in class, I sleep sitting up and I always wake up to find people laughing. Today I was sleeping and I had a dream that I was eating a
sandwich. In reality I was biting the air while saying “nom nom nom.” I woke up in mid “nom” to find the entire class (teacher included) laughing very
loudly. I laughed too. MLIA
Today, a guy in my biology class was annoying me. I tied his shoes together in a series of very difficult triple knots. Then the fire alarms went off. MLIA
My friends and I were driving in the middle of the night when we hit a stoplight. We looked to the left, only to find that the driver of the car beside us
was a clown. He looked at us and we all screamed. MLIA.
Today, I sent an email saying “I accept” to [email protected]. I got a reply “Welcome Agent Batman. The Penguin has been seen kidnapping gummy bears from gas stations. We need you to save these little men. Go to your nearest gas station and guard them.” I did, and after a couple
minutes someone else ran in shouting “Step away from the gummy bears!” in full Batman apparel. MLIA
At lunch my friend told a stupid story, I then started to slow-clap at her stupidity, and for some reason everyone in the cafeteria started to clap. Just

WOW! BLUE CREATURES! 3-D!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many of you
may have heard of the new movie that just came out called “Avatar”
This sci-fi action movie is similar to Lord of the Rings [said by many
of the fans]. The movie takes place on another planet called Pandora. On this planet live the Na’vi, similar to humans they have their
own language and culture.
Jake Sully decides to pose as one of the Na’vi people after
his brother was killed in battle there. While on the planet, he falls
in love with one of the blue aliens named was Neytiri. We can’t tell
you anymore details, or what happens in the end, but we can tell you
that you should go see it! YEAHHHH!!!!!!! AVATAR!!!!!! 3-D!!!!!!!!!!!

Last month you’ll recall I wrote a review for that no-talent
hack of a comedian Jeff Dunham. This month, however, is going to be
a change of pace. This month’s comedian is one of my favorites and
was named the 6th greatest comedian by British Channel 4. Bill Hicks
is the legend I’m talking about.
Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Bill Hicks was the son of Jim and
Mary Hicks, and had two elder siblings, Steve and Lynn. The family
lived in Florida, Alabama and New Jersey, before settling in Houston,
Texas, when Hicks was seven. He was raised in the Southern Baptist
faith, where he first began performing as a comedian to other children
at Sunday school. This is ironic if you evaluate the content of his more
recent gigs. However, Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the
age of 32. No longer will we hear his abnormal and abnormally enlightening opinion.
Hicks’ acts are plays on the audience’s emotions. He draws
you in and you think you know where he’s going, but just then he’ll
navigate the joke to a new direction. Somewhere more hilarious than
you could’ve imagined. His hilarious musings on society and people in
general keep you listening intently. Hicks’ material was less focused on
the everyday banalities of life and placed greater emphasis on philosophical themes of existence. Often Hick’s would invite the audience
to challenge established authority. To illustrate this point here’s an
excerpt from one of his acts: “Today, a young man realized that all
matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration — that we are
all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such
thing as death; life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves... Here’s Tom with the weather!”
Instead of writing a tacky conclusion filled with punch lines
and lame jokes, I’m going to end it the same way Bill ends his acts.
“The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down
and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud and it’s fun, for a while. Some people have been
on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or
is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come
back to us, they say, “Hey - don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because,
this is just a ride ...” And we ... kill those people. “Shut him up. We
have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of
worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to
be real.” It’s just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try
and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok.
Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King murdered; Malcolm X murdered;
Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan ... wounded. But it
doesn’t matter because: It’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime
we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and
money; a choice, right now, between fear and love.”
Artist You Ought Know: RED
Grammy-nominated Christian Rock band, RED, was established in Tennessee early in 2004. They definitely don’t play typical music Christian music though. Their metal sound gives them an edge that you wouldn’t expect from normal Christian groups.
The band’s debut album, End of Silence, came out in 2006 and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Their album’s first single,
Breathe Into Me, got all the way up to number 15 on the U.S. Mainstream rock chart and in 2007 they won the “Rock Recorded Song of
the Year” at the 38th annual GMA Dove Awards.
RED has toured with other bands including Flyleaf, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Puddle of Mudd, Papa Roach, Chevelle,
Shinedown, Seether, and a few others. The band has won another GMA Dove Award for their song Lost and their song Pieces was featured
in the trailer for The Blind Side.
Innocence and Instinct, the band’s newest album, was released February 10, 2009 and sold more than 39,000 copies the first week.
Also, in its first week out, the album peaked at number 5 on the iTunes overall top albums chart. Making Radio and Records history, RED
became the first band in Christian rock history to have a song at number 1 with their song Fight Inside.
With Innocence and Instinct nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album 2010, RED shows that Christian music isn’t
just the stuff you hear in church.

Gymnastics

Ok, so the boy’s basketball team has lost all but one of their
games so far. But the Cardinals are showing some promise after
a big conference win against Windom and some close games that
could have went their way.
We finally won a game against Windom on Friday, January
15. After building a 17 point lead in the second half, the Cardinals
saw their lead slip away slowly as Windom crept back into the
game. However, with the clock winding down, senior Jon Fodness
nailed a three pointer from the top of the key with 2.1 seconds left
to give the Cardinals a 3 point lead. After a failed inbound play
from Windom the Cardinals had finally claimed their first victory
of the year with a score of 52-49. Ok, so we almost gave it away,
but at least we won.
There are 8 regular season games until basketball sections
and 4 sections games until state, so let’s get out there and show our
team some school spirit and see some wins.
The Cardinal gymnasts have been having a pretty good season so far. They had an away meet in Pipestone on December 15,
and lost but it was motivation for them to get to work. Their next
meet was on December 22, in St. James and they came home with a
win. They had quite a few breaks because of the blizzards and cold
weather but made up for the loss to Pipestone last Friday when the
Varsity girls beat them! The girls will host the section meet on February 20, 2010 and would love a strong showing from the fans.
In case you’re new to this sport I looked for some frequently
asked questions about it. One of them was, when did gymnastics
originate? Gymnastics has been around for 2,000 years but 100
years as a competitive sport. Ancient Greek cities had courtyard for
physical activities called a gymnasia. These physical activities included running and wrestling. These were the first forms of gymnastics.
Another question was, how wide in the balance beam. It is usually
10 centimeters or 5 inches wide. The last question is what are the
uneven bars made out of? They are made out of wood with fiberglass on the inside which helps the bars to bounce. Now that you
know a little about gymnastics, go out and watch a meet and cheer
on the Cardinal gymnasts.
2010 Girl’s Basketball
By Meghann Stanley
This year, the girls’ varsity basketball team has not started
off too strong. With a record of 4-9, as of January 18, they are
slowly coming back and gaining more wins. The team consists of
14 players, six seniors, four juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen. The varsity team has two senior captains, Alyssa Segenga
and Liberty Robinson, who are both guards for the Cardinals. The
Cardinals being halfway done with the season still have 13 games
left in the regular season. So, instead of sitting at home, come to a
game and show some cardinal spirit.
Time to Wrestle!
By Ashley Siebenahler
The wrestlers have been quite busy over the past month
with two away meets in Redwood and Martin County West. They
also had a home meet on December 17 that was a triangular with
Worthington and Windom. They lost to both Windom and
Worthington but had some individuals do well. At Redwood they
did well against Redwood and didn’t pull out a win against Jackson.
This last weekend the boys had a tournament in George-Little
Rock Iowa and did their best as a team. Senior Eric Kor won
three out of his four matches.
There are only a few more chances to watch the wrestlers compete so make sure you get out and cheer them on..
Can’t Check This

The Varsity Girl’s Hockey team is off to a great start this
season! As the only winter sports team with a winning record, they
have some big goals for the season. They would like to be section
champs this year and also have a good chance of making it to state.
The seniors this year are Mikki Fitzer, Paige Olson, Kat Dahl, and
Stephanie Schultz. Paige Olson says, “I just love everyone on the
team and there’s never any drama!”
Paige has also been known to get pretty fierce on the ice.
When she puts her game face on, the other team best watch out.
With their current record at 9-4-1, the captains, Mikki, Kat, and
Paige, have been doing a very nice job of leading their team to
victory. Let’s get some Cardinal Spirit out to the ice rink for our
Luverne Girl’s Hockey team!

Burning its Way to the Top: Burn Notice
By Alyssa Reese and Jonathan Kruger
Burn Notice is not just another spy show. This
show is about a spy that gets fired. When a spy gets
fired, they get burned. Their bank accounts are frozen
and their assets are fried. All they have left is the clothes
on their backs and skills and knowledge.
They are also blacklisted (which means they are
put on every federal agency’s watch list). They are also
only allowed to stay in one place. The people that
burned the spy place them in a town that they must stay
in. This particular spy was burned and dumped in Miami. This spy’s name is Michael Westen (Jeffery Donovan).
Michael is dumped in Miami where he was born.
His trigger-happy ex-girlfriend, Fiona ‘Fi’ Glenanne (Gabrielle Anwar) and his friend Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell)
are there to help him not get caught by people that he
helped take down. With the help of Fiona, Sam, his over
obsessive mother, Madeline, and his younger brother,
Nate, Michael must find out who burned him and put an
end to the threats on his life.
Burn Notice is on USA Network on Thursdays at 9
p.m. It’s an awesome show! We totally recommend it!

3D TV
By Ryan Oye and Savanna Bremer
In 2010, Philips introduced its 3D intelligent display solution
in the professional market. Featuring high quality 3D, the display
delivers full brightness and full contrast with true color representation. With its multi-view technology and advanced 3D display signal
processing, the display provides a great viewing experience with no
3D glasses.
The display uses lenticular imaging to display two sets of the
same image. The lenses direct the light from the images to your
eyes. Each eye sees only one image. Your brain puts the images together and you interpret it as a three-dimensional image.
The new 42” and 56” hit the market early this year and are
currently going anywhere from $9,000 to $25,000 at most retailers. TV networks (ESPN and Discovery) are also incorporating
their own 3D television into the world of technology. ESPN and
Discovery are making 3D networks which will be broadcasted on
our current displays, requiring no special television to view. ESPN’s
first broadcast will air on June 11th for the world cup match between
South America and Africa. The network committed to a minimum
of 85 events, such as 25 World Cup matches, Summer X Games
and college sports including next year’s BCS Championship game.
Discovery Networks are teaming up to provide a more universal
approach to 3D programming with a basic cable and satellite network rather than a premium channel. They’ve not yet given a name
or launch date for the network, but it likely won’t be too far behind
ESPN’s.

Windows
By Nick Den Herder

With so many complaints about Vista, Windows had to
come out with something different and better. This resulted in the
creation of Windows 7. Windows 7 is not completely flawless; experts say that some features feel unfinished, and others need a third
party to work correctly. However experts still agree Windows 7
runs much better than Vista.
When Windows Vista came out, they offered a flashy new
interface but it had poor performance. A lack of compelling features made people regret upgrading from Windows XP. Even
though Windows 7 is not flawless, the final shipping version seems
to be the great successor to Windows XP that Vista never was.
The biggest changes in Windows 7 were in the start menu and taskbar. In Windows 7, the taskbar replaces all the old icons and text
labels with larger unlabeled icons. These new icons allow you to
scroll over them to see a thumbnail of what you have open. If you
do not like this feature you can reduce the size and get the labels
back.
There is also something called Aero Peek. If you click on
the Aero Peek it makes all your open windows transparent, so you
can see the desktop below them.

The Blind Side
Beth (Leigh’s friend):You’r changing that boy’s life.
Leigh Touhy: No, he’s changing mine.
Leigh Ann Tuohy(Sandra Bullock), seems to have the life most women would envy, a wonderful supporting husband, Sean (Tim Mcgraw),
and two great kids Collins and S.J.(Lily Collins and Jae Head). But one day while driving home, she sees, a larger than life teenager which everybody calls Big Mike(Quinton Aaron), when she tries to talk to him, he comes across as a little withdrawn, and is homeless so, she decides
to take him in, with her supporting family behind her. Leigh finds out his name is Michael Oher, and tries to dig up things about his past,
but has problems finding anything. She decides to have Michael play football. Michael faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American
offensive left tackle.
The movie is called Blind Side because Micheal Oher played offensive left tackle and his job was to protect the quarterback’s blind side!
The Blind Side is a must see movie full of heartwarming and fun moments. I saw it and I loved it. I recommend it to everyone.
Michael Oher: [after pushing an opponent all the way off the field] Sorry coach, I stopped when I heard the whistle.
Coach: Where were you taking him?
Michael Oher: The bus, it was time for him to go home.

1-10…You’re a mean person and have no heart. You must not like Valentine’s Day at all. You should be looking for someone you like because obviously
you are with someone you have no desire to be with. In other words get a new girlfriend/boyfriend or learn to be nice.
10-17…You don’t know how you feel right now. At times you only like to think about yourself. There also are times when you think about others, but
most the time you think about yourself. You’re the kind of person who doesn’t know how to react in situations. Learn to love Valentine’s Day because
you have the potential to be a great person. Maybe.
17-24…For the most part you have a good heart. You think about others a lot of the time. You are definitely one of those people who love Valentine’s
Day. If you do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend you should go find one right after you finish this quiz.
