• Not going to the Oscars
Presenter:
Some famous actors and actresses didn’t go to this year’s Oscars in America.
That’s because there were no black actors and actresses nominated to win
an award.
Actor Will Smith didn’t go – he said there should be more diversity at the
Oscars. The people in charge say more will be done in the future so that
black actors and actresses are nominated too.
There was good news for Sweden though. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander
won an Oscar.

She told journalists she never thought that she would be able to work as an
actress in English. Listen to what she says.
Alicia Vikander:
I never thought from back home that I would do films in English, I didn’t
know that you could as a foreign actress really so I’m just really honoured
and to experience being just here has been pretty cool.

A video of a teacher dancing hip-hop with his students was watched over 3.5
million times on Facebook.
Ron Clark started his own school in Atlanta. He uses music and dancing in
the classroom to help students to learn. Listen to what he says.
Ron Clark:
When kids know that you are willing to learn about their culture and to
interact with them in a positive way, they are going to respect you more and
they’re going to work harder.

• Schools for Syrian children
Presenter:
Countries need to give more money so that Syrian children, who are
refugees, can go to school.
That’s what Malala Yousafzai told Prime Ministers and Presidents from
around the world this year. Malala, who is 19, won the Nobel Peace Prize in
2014. She believes all children should be able to go to school. Listen to what
she says.
Malala:
Today, my goal was to ask world leaders to pledge 1.4 billion dollars to the
education of Syrian refugee children because how can we think of a brighter
and recovered Syria if these 700,000 children right now are out of school.
Presenter:
World leaders said they would give more money to help Syrian refugees.

• Britain votes Brexit
Presenter:
On June 23, people in Britain voted to leave the EU. 48 percent voted to stay,
52 percent of people voted to leave. The result of the referendum became
known as Brexit.
Brexit isn’t a real word – it’s a combination of Britain and exit – and after the
referendum people around the world were talking about it.
Listen to these young people speaking to the BBC.

I was quite happy to be honest because it means now we can see what
happens in the future and we have our freedom. It also means we don’t have
to put money into the EU and we can spend it on things in our country and
build up our country itself.
It was disappointing because the decision was made for our generation yet
we didn’t get to have a say in it.
I was really shocked, I didn’t expect us to leave – I don’t really have any
words for it.
I was in quite a shock but I think with these new challenges, come new
opportunities.
Presenter:
After the referendum, Theresa May became the new British Prime Minister.
Politicians are still deciding when and how Brexit will happen.
• Driving in New Delhi
Presenter:
New Delhi, in India, is the most polluted city in the world. For two weeks this
year, people were only allowed to drive their cars every other day.
A teenager from India had an idea to help the pollution problem. Akshat
Mittal made a website to help people find others who were driving in the
same direction. Then, they could share a car journey.
Listen to Akshat speaking to the BBC.
Akshat:
Through this website they should help in saving petrol, diesel and lead
towards a better India.

At the beginning, nobody thought that it was actually possible for him to
become President, and now he is.
I hope that what he does in these next four years can help push us further
and make the country united.
I think that everyone needs to just keep an open mind about Donald Trump
and maybe look past some of the things he says because overall I think he
has things that he’s going to be able to do for our country.

• Nobel winner Bob Dylan
Presenter:
Bob Dylan won this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. It’s a bit of a surprise
because rather than writing books, he writes songs.
Dylan is from America and is 75 years old. Some people think it’s great that a
songwriter has won a prize for writing good lyrics – others think only
authors should be able to win.
Dylan didn’t go to the ceremony to get his prize but he might have a concert
in Stockholm next year.
