REFERENCES AND INDEX
A listing of references and other source material, as well as an all-name index, are
provided at the end of this genealogy.
DATES
For the most part, many conflicting dates were easily straightened out by simply
rechecking the source material or official records. In some cases, however, dates used
in this write-up may vary from other published works for a number of reasons.
With respect to marriage dates, some researchers have used the date of a marriage
bond, or the date a marriage license was issued, instead of the actual marriage date.
Even though some of the source material I used did not specify the origin of the
marriage date given, I have tried to identify the marriage date I have cited as accurately
as possible. In a number of cases an approximate date of marriage, using the
abbreviation "ca." for circa (about), is shown based upon information provided in
various census documents.
Death dates may also vary in that the date of burial, or the date a will was written or
submitted for probate, will sometimes be cited by others instead of the actual death
date. In those cases where I was unable to verify which of two dates was correct, I
generally went with the one that referenced the most credible source material, or simply
cited the year of death only.
iii
One of the most common dating conflicts involves the use of the Julian Calendar versus
the Gregorian Calendar. On 14 September 1752, the Gregorian Calendar was adopted
in both Great Britain and its colonies in North America, and the first day of the year then
became January 1. Prior to that date, the Julian Calendar was in effect and the first
day of the year was March 25. As a consequence, many dates found in the 1600's and
first half of the 1700's for the months of January, February, and March reflect, or should
reflect, a double date, such as 15 February 1735/1736. Even though both dates may
be perfectly acceptable based upon the calendar that was in use at the time, to be
consistent with current dating procedures the second date is most accurate.
LOCATIONS
With respect to the location at which an event took place, there were many cases when
it was not possible to find any record giving the exact location that a birth, marriage or
death took place. Because I feel quite strongly that dates should always be
accompanied by places, if for no other reason than to aid future research, I made a
number of assumptions regarding location based upon available information. For
instance, if a family is found in the Fayette County, Indiana census records for 1840
and 1850, and they also show up in the deed and tax records of that county for the
same period, I did not feel that it was unreasonable to assume that any children they
had during this period were probably also born in Fayette County. In some cases,
however, my comfort level with assuming a possible location was limited to a state only.

THE
CHRISTY FAMILY
OF
VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY, AND INDIANA
GENERATION ONE
1. Samuel Christy. *
Samuel Christy is the earliest known, and most likely the immigrant ancestor of our
Christy family. 1 He is thought to have originally settled near the mouth of the York
River in Gloucester County, Virginia prior to moving to King and Queen County,
Virginia. 2 It is believed that he was probably married in Europe prior to coming to
America. While residing in King and Queen County, Samuel and his family were living
within the boundaries of Stratton Major Parish. Although very little is known regarding
Samuel, one early reference which pertains to him was found in the Vestry Book of
Stratton Major Parish. 3 It was dated Friday, 10 April 1741, and reads as follows:
"Ordered that the Church-Wardens do bind William Kettle Blackwell to
Samuel Cristy to learn the Blacksmiths Trade and the Said Samuel Cristy
to give him Education according to Law Untill he attains the Age."
According to a letter written on 25 December 1844 by his grandson, John Christy,
Samuel died in Virginia intestate, and his eldest son, who was also named Samuel,
became heir to his entire estate according to traditional English inheritance law. 2
Samuel may have been residing in Essex County, Virginia at the time of his death.
Unfortunately, the name of Samuel's wife has not been determined.

GENERATION TWO
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this
generation.
2. Samuel Christy.
Samuel Christy was the eldest son of Samuel Christy, Sr. 2 As yet, neither the date, nor
the place, that Samuel Christy was born are known for sure. Even though Samuel is
known to have been married, neither the name of his wife, nor her parentage, have
been determined either. Because Samuel was the eldest son of Samuel Christy, Sr.,
he apparently inherited his father's estate in Virginia according to traditional English
inheritance law. Shortly thereafter, however, Samuel and his wife and children all died
of smallpox. 2

3. Mildred Christy.
Mildred Christy (some records refer to her as Ann) was the daughter of Samuel Christy.
As yet, neither the date, nor the place, that Mildred Christy was born have been
determined. Mildred was apparently married twice during her life. Although she is
known to have married first to a man named Edward Blackburn in Virginia, the actual
date and place of their marriage have not been determined. 2 Edward, who had been
born in Middlesex County, Virginia on 30 November 1729, was later christened in the
Christ Church Parish in Middlesex County on 21 December 1729. 5 He was the son of
William and Elizabeth Blackburn. 5 Edward is believed to have died in about 1770 in
Culpeper County, Virginia.
After Edward passed away, Mildred married in Culpeper County, Virginia for a second
time to a man named Medley, 2 possibly John Medley. Although some of her children
later moved west into the state of Kentucky, Mildred appears to have resided in
Culpeper County for the remainder of her life.

4. Julius Christy. *
Julius Christy, the son of Samuel Christy, is thought to have been born near the mouth
of the York River in Gloucester County, Virginia in about 1730. 2 He was a twin child. 2
Because Julius' father passed away without leaving a will, his older brother, Samuel,
inherited all of their father's lands, as well as his slaves, according to old English law.
Shortly thereafter, however, Samuel's entire family, and all but one of his slaves died
from smallpox. Julius, who had recently been apprenticed to a man named James
Booker to learn the carpenters trade, was away from home at the time and fortunately
did not catch the fever. The one surviving black was subsequently inherited by Julius,
and worked for him as a carpenter's assistant for many years.
Sometime later, Julius moved into that portion of Virginia where Orange and Culpeper
Counties come together, and it was in Culpeper County that he married his wife, Agatha
Barnett. 1,2,13 Agatha, who was also a native of Virginia, was the daughter of John
Barnett and Marran Gibbs. 13
5
Agatha’s ancestry, on her father’s side, traces back to Bedfordshire, England through
Richard Barnett and Anne Corderoy (also written Cordray), who immigrated into Virginia
prior to 1650. They apparently settled in that portion of York County, Virginia that was
later formed into Gloucester County, Virginia in 1651. On her mother’s side, Agatha
traces back to England through the immigrant, John Gibbs, who originally settled at
Jamestown in 1619. A few of the surnames associated with these families in England
are: Goddard, Woolhouse, Muscote, Haselwood, Marmion, Baker, Seymour,
Winchcombe, Kingsmill, and Goring. 14
Later, on 15 August 1754, Julius purchased 100 acres of land from a man named
Charles Walker. This property, which was located along the Rapidan River, was
situated in both Culpeper and Orange Counties. Julius later built a gristmill on this
property, which he operated for nearly twenty years. This mill was subsequently
destroyed by a Spring flood, however, and even though Julius rebuilt his mill, it was not
long afterwards that he and Agatha sold this property and moved with their children to
western Virginia. 2,15
In about 1776/1777, Julius and Agatha moved into that part of Botetourt County,
Virginia that is now within the borders of Greenbrier County, West Virginia. They
apparently stayed there for approximately nine years, during which time Julius served in
the Revolutionary War. According to his tombstone he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the
Virginia Continental Line during the War. 16 In the record of Land Entitlements for
Greenbrier County dated 11 January 1780, Julius received title to 400 acres of land for
having settled it prior to 1 January 1778. 17 Julius Christy was later listed as being one
of the Greenbrier residents who signed a petition on 5 December 1780 to raise "twenty
tunns of hemp off the tithable persons in this county for the purpose of making a market
road from this place to Richmond." 18
Several years later, in about 1785/1786, Julius and his family moved further west into
the state of Kentucky, where they settled in Clark County. Julius died in 1808 in Clark
County, Kentucky. His will, which had been written on 5 December 1805, was later
probated on 25 July 1808 before the Clark County Court. 4 Although Julius Christy’s
actual place of burial is unknown, a U. S. Veterans Tombstone has been erected for his
Revolutionary War service in the Christy Graveyard at Winchester in Clark County,
Kentucky. 16 Although Agatha also passed away in Kentucky, the date of her death has
not been determined.
With the exception of Mildred Christy, all of the below listed children, including the
married names of daughters, were mentioned in Julius Christy’s will.

5. Juda “Judith” Christy.
Juda Christy, the daughter of Samuel Christy, is thought to have been born near the
mouth of the York River in Gloucester County, Virginia in about 1730. 2 She was a twin
child. 2 Juda was later married in Virginia to a man named John Gibbs. 2 John, who
had been born on 17 November 1729 in Middlesex County, Virginia, was the son of
Zachariah Gibbs and Mary Massie. 3,37
Sometime after their marriage, John and Juda moved to Orange County, Virginia, but
later settled in that portion of Culpeper County, Virginia that was later formed into
Madison County, Virginia in 1792. John died in Madison County in 1804. 38 His will,
which had been written on 18 October 1803, was subsequently probated before the
Madison County Court on 28 June 1804. 38 Although it is believed that Juda also
passed away in Madison County, the date of her death has not been determined. The
following children were named in John Gibbs’ will.

GENERATION THREE
NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this
generation.
11. Elizabeth “Betsy” Christy.
Elizabeth Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in
Culpeper County, Virginia. 19 She was later married in about 1774 in Virginia to a man
named William Glass. 20 William was the son of Jehu Glass and Elizabeth (Dozier)
Belfield Wilson. 20
Although William and Elizabeth appear to have remained in Culpeper County, Virginia
for many years after their marriage, in about 1796 they apparently moved to Scott
County, Kentucky. Upon arriving there, they settled first on Cane Run, but later settled
on what was then called McConnell's Run, but is now known as Long Lick Pike.
William and Elizabeth owned property in that part of Scott County that was later formed
into Owen County in 1819, as well as in that portion that remained Scott County.
Several of their children later settled on the Owen County property. 20
William and Elizabeth resided in Scott County for the remainder of their lives. Although
William is known to have died in Scott County before Elizabeth, the date of his death is
not known. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is believed to have died in about 1825 in
Scott County. 21

12. Anna Christy. *
Anna Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in Culpeper
County, Virginia. 19 Anna was apparently married twice during her life. She appears to
have married her first husband, John Valentine Lindsey (also written Lindsey), in about
1777 in that portion of Botetourt County, Virginia that was later formed into Greenbrier
County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1778. 22 John, who was born in about 1757 in
Frederick County, Virginia, was the son of David and Catherine Lindsey. 22
In January 1780, John and Anna were granted 800 acres of land by the Greenbrier
County Court "by right of settlement prior to 1 January 1778," the date Greenbrier
County began functioning. 17 These lands were situated on the north side of the
Greenbrier River. In 1785, John and Anna obtained an additional 236 acres of land by
Warrant. By 1790, however, John and Anna had sold these lands and moved further
west into Scott County, Kentucky. John apparently died in Scott County during the
latter part of 1805. His will, which was written on 29 September 1805, was admitted for
probate before the Scott County Court during the January 1806 term. 55
About 10 years after John's death, Anna married for a second time to a man named
Spencer Stone. 22 This marriage most likely took place in Scott County, Kentucky.
Spencer was the father of Elias Barbee Stone who married Catherine Houston Lindsey,
one of John Lindsey and Anna Christy’s daughters. 22
Although Anna and Spencer probably resided for a short time in Scott County, they
eventually moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, where Spencer owned a small farm on
the banks of the Dix River. This farm was located in that portion of Lincoln County,
Kentucky that was later formed into Boyle County in 1842. It was there that Spencer
Stone died on 1 January 1838. 56
Shortly after Spencer passed away, Anna moved to Fayette County, Indiana to be near
some of her children from her first marriage. Anna died in Fayette County, Indiana in
1844. Her will, which had been written on 8 October 1844, was subsequently submitted
for probate before the Fayette County Court on 19 November 1844. 57
The children listed below have all been identified through correspondence with
members of the Lindsey family, as well as other documents and records as being John
and Anna’s.

13. Mildred Christy.
Mildred Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in
Culpeper County, Virginia on 21 March 1759. 24,67 She was later married in Virginia to a
man named Belfield Cave. 24,67 Although no record of their marriage has been found to
date, based upon the age of their first child, Elizabeth, it is believed to have taken place
in about 1777. 24,67 Belfield, who had been born in Virginia on 23 October 1756, was
the son of Benjamin Cave and Elizabeth Belfield. 67,68
After their marriage, Belfield and Mildred resided on a farm which was situated on the
south side of the Rapidan River in Orange County, Virginia. During the Revolutionary
War, Belfield served as a Captain of Infantry in the 7th Virginia Regiment of the Orange
County, Virginia Militia, and fought at the Battle of Yorktown. 69
Belfield Cave died in Orange County, Virginia on 4 June 1811. 67 His will, which had
been written on 4 May 1811, was subsequently admitted for probate before the Orange
County Court on 26 August 1811. 13 Mildred, who survived Belfield by approximately
eighteen years, died in Orange County, Virginia on 6 August 1829. 24,67

14. Agatha Christy.
Agatha Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in about
1760 in Culpeper County, Virginia. According to Julius Christy’s will, which was written
on 5 December 1805 and probated on 25 July 1808 in Clark County, Kentucky, Agatha
was married to a man named Kirtley. 4,24
15
NOTE: Although a number of genealogies indicate that Agatha Christy was married to
a man named Francis Kirtley, son of Thomas Kirtley and Judith Calloway, most other
genealogies indicate that this Francis Kirtley was actually married to a woman named
Sarah Frances Buford. To confuse matters more, both camps show the same birth and
death dates for Francis Kirtley, as well as the exact same children. To put it bluntly, this
is not possible. I personally have not found any tangible evidence to date regarding the
given name of Agatha’s husband. In light of this, and the conflicting claims mentioned
above, no additional information will be presented on this family until this issue can be
resolved through verifiable documentation.
15. Frances Christy.
Frances Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was calculated to
have been born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1763. 19 She was later married in
Orange County, Virginia to a man named William Cave on 11 June 1783. 4,26 William,
who was born in 1763 in Orange County, Virginia, was the son of John Cave and
Mildred Bell. 27
Sometime after their marriage, Frances and William, moved to Kentucky, where they
settled in Bourbon County. 72 They eventually moved west into Missouri, however,
where they settled near the town of Columbia in Boone County. William died in Boone
County, Missouri on 6 August 1841, while Frances died there on 18 June 1848. 27 Both
were subsequently buried in the Cave Family Cemetery in Boone County. 27 William's
will named his wife, Frances, and the three daughters listed below. 73

16. James Christy.
James Christy, the son of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was calculated to have
been born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1766. 1,19 This year is based upon a letter he
wrote on 7 December 1844 in which he stated he was 78 years of age. 1 He was later
married in Greenbrier County, Virginia (now within West Virginia) on 10 March 1787 to
a woman named Elizabeth Armstrong. 28 Elizabeth, who was born on 9 April 1769 in
Virginia, was the daughter of Robert Armstrong and Jane Jameson. 82
In about 1798, James and his family, along with his younger brother, Samuel,
apparently moved to Fleming County, Kentucky, where he is found acquiring property
between the years 1798 and 1817. 83 In 1803, both James and his brother, Samuel,
who was also residing in Fleming County at the time, received personal property from
their father, Julius Christy, by a recorded bill-of-sale. 83
The last document to have been found which pertained to James Christy was a letter
that he wrote to a nephew who was residing in Missouri. 1 In that letter, which had been
written on 7 December 1844, James Christy mentioned that his wife, Elizabeth, had
died on 1 August 1843, and that he was residing at Poplar Plains in Fleming County,
Kentucky at the time. 1 James is believed to have died in Fleming County.
The offspring listed below as (male) and (female) were abstracted from available
pre-1850 census records. These are also believed to be James and Elizabeth's
children, but have not been positively identified as yet.

17. George Christy.
George Christy, the son of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in Culpeper
County, Virginia in about 1767. 19 He was later married in Virginia to a woman named
Mary Cave. 94 Although no record of their marriage has been found, based upon the
year of birth of their oldest child Elizabeth, it is believed to have taken place in about
1787. 93
George and Mary eventually settled in Boone County, Kentucky, where they resided for
the remainder of their lives. In 1801 George served as the second Coroner for Boone
County. 128 George died in Boone County, Kentucky in 1804. 12 His will, which had
been written on 28 December 1803, was subsequently submitted for probate before the
February 1804 session of the Boone County Court. 12 The below listed children were
named in George Christy’s will.

18. Ambrose Christy.
Ambrose Christy, the son of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in Culpeper
County, Virginia on 10 November 1768. 30,31 He was later married in Clark County,
Kentucky to a woman named Mary “Polly” Bush on 18 June 1794. 31,32 Mary, who had
been born on 10 June 1774, was the daughter of Francis Bush and Lucy Davis. 30,31
In the 1790's, Ambrose served in the Indian Wars under General Harmer. He was
subsequently commissioned as a Captain in the 17th Regiment of the Kentucky State
Militia in 1799. Although Ambrose worked as an inspector of tobacco at times, he also
was a tavern keeper. In 1820, Ambrose served as a Magistrate in Clark County, and in
1823 he served as the Sheriff of Clark County. 96
In about 1836, Ambrose and Mary moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, where they
settled in the vicinity of Harrodsburg. Ambrose died on 18 July 1839 in Mercer County,
while Mary died there on 28 October 1849. 30,31 Both Ambrose and Mary were buried
alongside their daughter, Malinda, in the Vivion Family Graveyard at Shakertown in
Mercer County. 30

20. Sarah Christy.
Sarah Christy, the daughter of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in Culpeper
County, Virginia in about 1771. 19 She was later married in Woodford County, Kentucky
to a man named Elijah Davis on 21 September 1790. 4,35 No additional information has
been found concerning this couple.
21. Samuel Christy.
Samuel Christy, the son of Julius Christy and Agatha Barnett, was born in Greenbrier
County, Virginia (now within West Virginia) on 21 February 1782. 36 In about
1785/1786, Samuel moved with his parents to Kentucky, where they settled in Clark
County. Samuel appears to have later moved with his older brother, James, however,
to Fleming County, Kentucky in about 1798.
23
In 1803, Samuel and James both received personal property from their father, Julius
Christy, by a recorded bill-of-sale. 83 Samuel was later married in Fleming County,
Kentucky to a woman named Mary “Polly” Day on 11 April 1805. 35 Polly, who was also
a native of Virginia, had been born there on 3 July 1789. 36,115 NOTE: Although many
individuals claim Mary was the daughter of Truman Day and Mary Saunders, Truman’s
bible record indicates that he did not have any children born before 1790, and his
daughter, Mary, was born in 1798. As such, our Mary “Polly” Day must be the daughter
of someone else. 116
After their marriage, Samuel and Mary remained in Kentucky until the late 1820's, at
which time they moved to Decatur County, Indiana, where they purchased land at
Greensburg in Marion Township. According to the 1850 federal census of Decatur
County, Indiana, Samuel was a boot and shoemaker by trade. 115 Samuel Christy died
at Greensburg in Decatur County, Indiana on 13 September 1855, while Mary died
there on 3 April 1866. 36 Both were subsequently buried in the South Park Cemetery at
Greensburg. 36
The offspring listed below as (female) was abstracted from the 1810 census of Fleming
County, Kentucky. 85 This is also believed to be one of Samuel and Polly's daughter’s,
but has not been positively identified yet.
