The work casts a shadow and dims the light. For Kääriäinen light means everything that makes our environment visible and causes changes within it. a Shade is about the mark left by light – a memory. In Outi Pieski installation Gorži, waterfalls cascade out of the windows of the Helsinki Cathedral’s chapel. The installation is inspired by a spiritual tradition of the Sami according to which nature is equal to man. MARKET SQUARE Pohjoisesplanadi 1-13 Lux Architecture – Waterfront CROSSING BETWEEN KIRKKOKATU AND SNELLMANINKATU Kalle Mustonen: TELLMEHOWDOIFEEL Ronda is an installation by Kaisa Salmi projected onto the wall of one of the bell towers of Helsinki Cathedral. The installation is based on an image that has been painted by hand using special polyaniline (PANI) pigmented paint, which allows the colour of the paint to be reproduced with exceptional clarity and richness on the reflecting surface. Lux Helsinki will light up the impressive buildings next to the Market Square throughout the festival. The façades of City Hall, House of Govinius, the Swedish Embassy, House of Lampa, the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace facing the sea will all be illuminated – the silhouette of the city will glow in the winter darkness. The overall effect can be admired from a photo deck in the Market Square. TELLMEHOWDOIFEEL is a wooden structure that utilises the eye-catching aesthetics of neon advertising signs. Drawing on pop music from the 1980s and ‘90s, the installation combines a carnival-like appearance with melancholic content. MARKET SQUARE Aalto University: Fotoni A new light installation by students from Aalto University will be presented in connection with the observation deck in the Market Square. The installation has been created according to the principles of sustainable development using materials provided by IKEA Finland. STORA ENSO HEAD OFFICE Kanavaranta 1 Shader: Cube Shader’s light installations presents the iconic and once controversial head office of Stora Enso in a new light. The impressive five-part animation Cube creates an illusion in which analogue and digital, nature and technology, and old and new coexist side by side. THE HOUSE OF NOBILITY Ritarikatu 1 Teemu Lehmusruusu: The Land Beneath Our Feet The Land Beneath Our Feet explores man’s relationship to the earth, on top of which our daily reality takes place. If we could rewind back through time and geological periods, we would notice that the tectonic plates and surface formations are in continuous, living motion. HELSINKI CATHEDRAL This installation can be viewed from all four directions around the cathedral Tarja Ervasti: Domus 360°– Four homes For the first time in the history of Lux Helsinki all four sides of Helsinki Cathedral will become part of one light installation: Domus 360° can be experienced from all four directions, both near and far. Each side of the cathedral has its own motif: Man, Nature, Knowledge and Eternity. BANK OF FINLAND Kirkkokatu 17 Maija Louekari: Veljekset (Brothers) SENATE SQUARE Rölli Ridanpää & Tero Laine: Light Pipes Veljekset (Brothers) is an animation based on the pattern designed by Maija Louekari for Finnish design house Marimekko in which powerful and vivid forest inhabitants come to life, creating a surrealistic nature experience in the heart of historic Helsinki. Light Pipes depicts the urban landscape – the light and the interaction between people represent the city’s diverse opportunities. The interactive installation comprises copper pipes and valves that adjust the brightness of the lamps. TOPELIA Entrance: Unioninkatu 38 Flowers of Life SENATE SQUARE Petri Tuhkanen: People Power The Flowers of Life collective has earned a reputation for its impressive light installations that pose fundamental questions to viewers. Lux Helsinki will feature the collective’s biggest installation to date – one that exudes mysticism and the magical glow of light. People Power is an interactive installation that invites people to observe and play with light together. The installation utilises three pressure sensors to measure the weight of the audience and by doing so change the colours and intensity of the installation. THE NATIONAL LIBRARY Entrance: Kirkkokatu 20 Mónica Ruiz Loyola: Absence TORI QUARTER (TORIKORTTELIT) Entrance: Aleksanterinkatu 22 Lucas Maassen: The Singing Building Absence initially appears as an inanimate object in the dark, but as you get closer the installation slowly comes to life to reveal a sewing machine that silently creates patterns from dimly illuminated threads of yarn. The threads reflect the moving words of poet Rocío Cerón. Dutch artist Lucas Maassen likes to give a voice to buildings. The Singing Building can be found in the historical Tori Quarters throughout the festival. The building features a mouth that is projected onto the façade performing a rap. Finnish rap artist Hannibal has leant his voice to the installation. RELATED EVENTS A programme of events related to light will be presented throughout the festival in the city centre. Details are available on the Lux Helsinki website and social media channels. Related events can be found online at luxhelsinki.fi. VIEWING PLATFORM AND CAFÉ Market Square Lux Helsinki lights up the city’s most impressive façades throughout the festival. The overall effect can be admired and photographed from a viewing platform in the Market Square. Inside the glasswalled container is a light installation by students from Aalto University and a café serving hot drinks. EINO RUUTSALO: LIGHT WALL City Hall Pohjoisesplanadi 11–13 The main lobby of City Hall presents a kinetic light installation created by Eina Ruutsalo in 1971. “Light Wall” is made from metal, plexiglass and fluorescent bulbs and is part of Helsinki’s art collection that is maintained by the Helsinki Art Museum HAM. The installation can be admired inside City Hall throughout the festival. HELSINKI CITY MUSEUM OFFERS FUN EXPERIENCES FOR FAMILIES Aleksanterinkatu 16 Helsinki City Museum offers light performances and other fun experiences for families and kids. At the same time you can check out the museum’s other exhibitions. The light installation “Shadow” by Jaakko Niemelä will project the shadows of visitors to the museum onto the wall in the courtyard.
