HINDSGAVL FESTIVAL
10 to 18 July 2017
A musical vacation
In July, Hindsgavl Festival will take place for the
49th time at Hindsgavl Castle, where both
musicians and audience stay at the castle a few
days of their choice and form a little musical
community that truly deserves the most
stunning surroundings in Denmark. There is a
fantastic atmosphere and a perfect serenity.
Take a swim in the ocean, a jog in the forest,
attend musical lectures and open rehearsals,
enjoy the gastronomy and not least the
concerts. After the concerts the bar in the old
main building will open, but there is also the
possibility of sitting on the beach jetty in the
moonlight, listening to the porpoises and
enjoying the midnight magic in the park.
The program this year exceeds our own
expectations (once again) - it has probably
never been better! As for previous seasons, we
have made it a virtue to bringing artists to
Hindsgavl Manor that have only rarely, or
never, performed on Danish stages. Therefore,
in case you do not already know them, seize this
opportunity to get acquainted with some of the
most outstanding personalities on the classic
music scene right now.
Hindsgavl Festival has three concert series:
International stars (typical evening concerts),
young talents (typical afternoon concerts) and
contemporary music (typically late evening
concerts).
All in all, we are very much looking forward to
eight enchanting days on Hindsgavl Castle.
Hoping to see you,
Bernard Villaume, Festival Director
Hindsgavl Festival wishes to express gratitude to these Danish
institutions and foundations:

French opening and funky folk music
Quatuor Ébène is reputed to be one of the most creative classical ensembles, moving effortless across
genres; from classical to jazz, pop, world music and even to rock 'n roll. The quartets trademark is their
energetic style and infectious enthusiasm. Improvisations are often fitted into their concert programs
and the quartets focus on this skill may explain why the audience is often left with the feeling that ‘good
old quartets’ by Haydn and his like are being created in the same now as they are played.
This evening quartets by Mozart and Beethoven are performed, alongside the Ravel quartet, the
recording of which received the “Best Album of the Year”-award at the Classic FM Gramophone
Awards in 2009. Also, do not miss the award-winning documentary about the quartet, "4 ", which we
show in the afternoon. The documentary gives a unique insight into how much it requires both
artistically and personally to work as an ensemble on international top level.
As per tradition, the opening day ends with a musical party in the castles Garden Room, this time with
the Danish/Swedish funky folk music trio, Dreamers Circus.

Wondrous Love Story and a Classy Clarinet
This day is a cornucopia with a variety and quality of classical music, you will not find anywhere else. Let's begin
with the afternoon concert:
"To hear him is something you want to tell on two of your grandchildren” wrote British The Telegraph after
Christian Gerhaher was in London to receive the award for best male singer at the International Opera Awards
2015. “One of the finest lieder singers of this or any generation” – the citation as Christian Gerhaher was awarded
the Wigmore Hall medal in October 2016. These honors are just a tiny fraction of the many that are strewn across
the German baritone. Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber, have known each other since adolescence, and been
musical partners through 28 years. Their recordings have won numerous awards and their interpretations of
especially Schubert and Schumann has set new standards for the genre. This afternoon Brahms is on. Completed
in 1869, his song cycle Die Schöne Magelone derives from a quasi-medieval romance, in prose and verse, by
Ludwig Tieck about a Provençal knight-errant called Peter and his love for the beautiful, if initially unavailable,
Magelone.
After Magelone, an evening concert in clarinet- and piano heaven with Martin Fröst and pianist Roland Pöntinen.
And last – but certainly not least - a transcendent and spiritual experience into the contemporary music world
with Danish composter Simon Loeffler whose compositions captivates and puzzles the audience on the most
prestigious contemporary music scenes worldwide.

Solo percussion and clarinet quintets
The giants meet when Martin Fröst plays Mozart and Brahms with Quatuor Ébène. Sparks were flying
from the stage during their first collaboration at Verbier Festival in Switzerland in 2016, and they are
looking immensely forward to the second round at Hindsgavl in 2017. So are we!
The New York Times very aptly wrote this about Fröst in 2014: “In earlier times, the talent of Martin
Frost would have attracted suspicion. Like that of Paganini, whom contemporaries suspected to be in
cahoots with the Devil: How else to explain his wizardry on the violin, which surpassed everyone else
in technique and brilliance?” No matter who he is in cahoots with, we are looking tremendously
forward to hosting the Swedish clarinet-wizard again, for the third time at Hindsgavl Festival.
In the afternoon, it is time for solo percussion with Danish Mathias Reumert, who in 2015 received the
Danish Music Critics' Artist's Award and who has received ecstatic reviews for his recent DVD release
"SOLO". A breathtaking and virtuoso experience is guaranteed!

String quartet and Anderszewski solo
Piotr Anderszewski has won a reputation as one of the greatest and most interesting musical
personalities. His playing is renowned for sound richness, depth and virtuosity and his recordings have
won a host of awards. The Polish pianist is known as an uncompromising and extremely perfectionist
artist - traits which made him leave the stage as 21-year-old in the middle of his semi-final program in
the famous Leeds piano competition because he felt he had not played at his best - and most recently
in London to repeat an entire Bach partita at a concert when he was not satisfied with his first version.
As for all his solo recitals, the program is carefully selected using the principle that a mutual sympathy
between himself as performer and the composer is essential – just as it is in interpersonal relations.
In this case, we feel confident that Mozart, Janácek and Chopin would be pleased to have this fine
pianist at the keyboard. Remember the documentary "The Unquiet traveler" about Piotr at 10:30.
The young Nordic Alba String Quartet saw their breakthrough in the Carl Nielsen Chamber Music
Competition in Copenhagen in 2015. The Hindsgavl Festival management has since then on various
occasions enjoyed the quartet playing with an incredible maturity, both new and older compositions.

Two very different cello-experiences
Soloist, chamber musician, teacher, author and radio host. Steven Isserlis can write many titles on his
resumé. His great musicianship, his intense presence on stage and his technical mastery have secured
him a position as one of the greatest cellists with solo engagements in front of top orchestras
worldwide. In classical cello concertos he is not only playing the solo part but also very often enjoys
leading the orchestra, and along with his passion for the education of young musicians, this makes him
to the perfect match for Hindsgavl Festival's own young Nordic in-house ensemble.
It is truly a day in the sign of the violoncello. In the afternoon we shall listen to another cellist,
Belgian/French Camille Thomas who despite her young age, has a spectacular international career
already. With romantic/modern music for duo with piano, this will be a completely different celloexperience, compared to the evening concert. Camille visited Hindsgavl for the first time in 2014.

Liszt .. con Brio
Trio con Brio Copenhagen has been an institution in the Danish music scene for now 18 years, and has
a thriving international career – the past six months alone has led them on tours to South America, USA,
Germany, France and England. However, oddly enough the trio remains undiscovered by many of the
most prestigious non-Danish concert venues. On a bad day, they outperform the best, and you never
know what to expect: Their telepathic interplay, their energy on stage and their enormous care for all
musical details is a continued source of divine surprise.
This Sunday’s afternoon concert features grandiose piano music by Liszt, Mahler and Bach. In charge is
the young Swiss giga talent Béatrice Berrut whom some may remember for a memorable concert with
Bach-Busoni works on Hindsgavl Festival 2014.
We finish the day in the intimate Garden Room of the castle with music for the Onde Martenot; the
earliest electronic instrument in music history. Many 20th century composers have written wonderful
music for this instrument, among others and most notably Olivier Messiaen, who was a big fan.

New piano trio and heavenly baroque
Ensemble Arcangelo was formed in 2010 and has already found a place among the world's leading
ensembles for early music. It was founded by artistic director and conductor Jonathan Cohen, and like
him, all members of the ensemble are driven by a common passion for chamber music. They have
recorded and toured with several prominent soloists (including Hindsgavl Festival ‘veterans’ Isabelle
Faust, Christiane Karg and Alina Ibragimova) and are in season 16/17 Wigmore Hall's first Baroque
ensemble "in residence" ever with a four-concert showcase of “the period instrument ensemble’s
gripping artistry” (Wigmore Hall).
But first – in the afternoon – enjoy once more Trio con Brio Copenhagen. This time in a purely Danish
program which offers something as exciting as a first performance of the young composer Rune
Glerup's piano trio, as well as music of renown composer Niels W. Gade, celebrating his 200-year’s
anniversary in 2017.

Russian finale
In a pure Russian program, we meet star cellist Steven Isserlis for the second time on this year’s festival,
this time in collaboration with an old friend of Hindsgavl Festival, pianist Alexander Melnikov. The
evening concert will certainly not lack neither temperament nor soul. It will be particularly interesting
to hear the world-famous pianist/conductor Pletnev in the role of composer. His sonata from 2006 is
written to Steven Isserlis, who also played this piece several times with Pletnev himself at the piano.
Today’s afternoon concert is also to be looked forward to. Three of Sweden's leading young soloists
(well, local hero Andreas Brantelid is of course MOSTLY Danish) join forces in one of the chamber music
literature's heavyweights, namely Mozart's Divertimento K. 563 which is so much more than ‘just’
serving to ‘divert’.
Don’t forget that it is possible to get one more string trio for the road (Beethoven) at a short lunch
concert the following day, Wednesday 19 July, before saying goodbye to this year's Hindsgavl Festival
and wishing for a happy reunion in 2018.
