“We really want to get better,” Zimpher said.
“This is our vehicle for making smart
decisions, improving ourselves and then
holding ourselves accountable in the full light of day.”
The chancellor said SUNY is the only university system in the
country that is holding itself accountable to this extent.

“We want the public to know where we succeed and where we may
fall short,” she said in a statement. “It’s a level of accountability that

many would consider a gamble, but the risks are outweighed by the
opportunity to present all New Yorkers with SUNY’s advancement
and our impact on the economic revitalization of New York State.”
This is where SUNY stands on some of its goals and initiatives in
some critical areas, including:
» Diversity and creating greater access to higher education: In
2008, campuses received 39,000 applications from historically
under-represented populations out of a system-wide total of
143,000. In the fall 2008, 22,000 students enrolled from underrepresented populations out of 122,000 total.

» Impact on the state economy: SUNY campuses’ research
expenditures totaled just under $850 million, which supported 5,300
jobs statewide.
There are a number of measures that the report card describes as
works in progress, such as the number of graduates employed in
New York, their median income, debt upon graduation, the time it
takes students to find jobs after graduating and diversity content in
the curriculum and courses.
College Board President Gaston Caperton said in a statement said
the report card will give students and families “an unprecedented
window into the quality and character of SUNY schools” and
advances SUNY’s reputation as a national leader on education
policy.
“When it comes to education, accountability has been passed
around like a hot potato for too many years,” he said. “Today,
SUNY, one of the largest university systems in the country, has
taken a major step towards ensuring that our schools are serving
our students.”
The report card will help SUNY and others know how it is doing on
one of its key missions — helping revitalize New York’s economy —
“and thereby help propel SUNY to become New York’s most
important economic development engine,” said Brian McMahon,
executive director of the state Economic Development Council.
