Thomas S. Knight, Jr.
Thomas S. Knight, Jr. died peacefully at his Greenwich, CT home Sunday
morning shortly after midnight. Knight was born in Rochester, NY on
May 9, 1930. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1948 and
went on to Princeton University graduating in 1952. Shortly thereafter he
travelled to Europe where he met his future wife of forty-eight years,
Kathleen Craig, while they waited together in line to collect mail at the
American Express office in Paris. He served his country in Korea during the
War as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army with the 555th Field
Artillery Battalion. Upon his return from active duty he began a career in
advertising with Young & Rubicam in New York, where he was as an account executive for over
twenty years ultimately retiring from advertising with the firm E. B. Wilson. In addition he was a
board member of PNC New England Bank. An avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer, Knight pursued
those hobbies throughout his life and was on the Board of Directors of the Round Hill Club and the
Trout and Salmon Foundation. Knight dedicated his time to several charitable organizations
including St. James Church in Manhattan where he served on the vestry and became president of the
Rector's Council, Portsmouth Abbey School where he was a member of the Board of Regents, the
United Way of Greenwich, and the YMCA of Greenwich. His greatest philanthropic passion was Orbis
International which he co-founded with Dr. David Paton. From its humble origins in a few spare

grandchildren. Friends and family may call on Thursday, May 8th, 2014 from 4PM - 7PM at the Leo

Friday, May 9th, 2014 at 11AM at St. Michael's Parish - 469 North Street, Greenwich, CT. The family

Sybil Smart Craig
Brighton and Canadice: Died on November 2, 2010 at her home
following a brief illness. She was 86. Sybil Louise Smart was born in
Grosse Pointe, Michigan on March 8, 1924. She was the daughter of
Lewis L. Smart and Sybil B. (Broad) Smart. She graduated from The
Liggett School (1942), cum laude from Mount Holyoke College
(1946), did graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University as a student
(and friend) of Owen Lattimore, MA in History from University of
Rochester (1961). She lived for over 50 years in Brighton and Canadice, NY.
She taught History (1963 to 1972) at Columbia School, later Allendale Columbia School. She
has served on boards of The United Nations Association USA, Strong National Museum of Play,
Friends of the Brighton Library, Rochester Association for the United Nations (past President),
Hochstein Music School and the Woman’s Career Center. She was a recipient of the International
Relations Award from the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and the Historic Home Award by the
Landmark Society. She was a generous supporter of many institutions in Rochester as well as Mount
Holyoke College.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband Albert Burchfield Craig, Jr. She is survived
by her children Lee C. Lundback (Staffan), Albert B. Craig III (Louise), John G. Craig, Gregory L.
Craig; her grandchildren Hadley L. Matarazzo (Todd), Erik B. Lundback, Albert B. Craig IV; her great
grandson Miles C. Matarazzo and numerous loving nieces and nephews. Her family wishes to thank

Dorothy "Dottie" Elsie Meyer Craig, age 82, passed away on 20
February 2009.
Mrs. Craig was born on 24 January 1927 in New York City to Dr.
Herbert Willy and Emmy Kaesche Meyer. She graduated from The
Brearley School in New York in 1944, and from Vassar College,
Poughkeepsie, NY with a degree in Spanish in 1947. From Vassar, Mrs.
Craig graduated cum laude, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and lettered
in four varsity sports: swimming, tennis, squash, and basketball. She
studied languages throughout her education and in her early years
spoke five foreign languages with some competence. Dorothy married
Earle M Craig, Jr. in June 1948 in New York City and they moved to
Midland, Texas in 1950. Mrs. Craig served the Midland community in
many capacities including: President of the Junior League; President of the Board of Trustees of
Trinity School; Chairman of the White House Endowment Fund to raise $25 million to maintain the
public rooms of the White House at the request of Barbara Bush; member of the Board of Governors
of the Midland Memorial Hospital; and member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She
was selected as one of Midland's Centennial Citizens in 1985 by the Leadership Midland Alumni
Association. She was also very active in the Republican Party -at the local and national level. In New
York City, Mrs. Craig was a member of the Colony Club. Mrs. Craig was preceded in death by her
husband, Earle M Craig, Jr. She is survived by her four children: a daughter, Sandra Craig Bessieres and
her husband Paul of San Francisco, CA, and their children Christianne Bessieres Lane and her husband
John of Mercerville, NJ, Marshall Bessieres of Palo Alto, CA, and Stuart Bessieres and his wife
KyleAnne of Berkeley, CA; a son, Earle M Craig III and his wife Brett of Newport Beach, CA, and their
sons Bradley Craig, and Morgan Earle Craig of Newport Beach, CA; a daughter, Audrey Craig Walker

Earle M. Craig, Jr., age 84, passed away on 20 November 2008.
Mr. Craig was born on 26 March 1924 in Rochester, PA to Mr. Earle M. and
Margaret Peters Craig. His childhood was spent in Beaver, PA near Pittsburgh.
He graduated from The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, N.J., in 1942 and
from Yale University, New Haven, CT with a B.S. degree in Applied Economics
in January 1949, in the class of 1945W.
Mr. Craig enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Reserve in September 1942, and
graduated from Single-Engine Flying School as Second Lieutenant and rated
Pilot at Eagle Pass Army Air Base, Texas in the Class of 1944B. He trained in P47 Single-Engine Fighters at Bruning, Nebraska, and Abilene and Dalhart, Texas.
Mr. Craig flew escort, dive-bombing, napalm bombing, and strafing missions in P-47's as a First
Lieutenant and Flight Leader in the 507th Fighter Group, 463rd Fighter Squadron from le Shima, near
Okinawa, in July and August 1945. He witnessed the Nagasaki atom-bomb explosion from his
airplane on 9 August 1945. Mr. Craig was commissioned Captain in the Eighth Air Force in January
1946 and released from active duty in October 1946. He returned to Yale University and graduated in
January 1949.
Earle married Dorothy Elsie Meyer in June 1948 in New York City and they moved from Sewickley,
PA to Midland, TX in August 1950. Mr. Craig was self-employed as an independent oil and gas
producer from 1950 until the present doing business as Craig, Ltd. and Earle M. Craig, Jr. Corporation.
Mr. Craig's volunteer service included: Chairman of the Board of Deacons and later elder of First
Presbyterian Church of Midland where he had been a member for over 50 years; Director of Midland
National Bank and its successors; Trustee of The Lawrenceville School, NJ; Trustee of the Nantucket
Conservation Foundation; Trustee of the Siasconset Union Chapel, Nantucket Island, Siasconset, MA;
Trustee of the Nantucket Historical Association; and he was selected as one of Midland's Centennial
Citizens in 1985 by the Leadership Midland Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Order
of Indian Wars. Mr. Craig was also very active in the Republican Party both locally and at the national
level.
Mr. Craig was a member of the Petroleum Club, Midland Country Club, Racquet Club, Nantucket
Yacht Club, Sankaty Golf & Beach Club on Nantucket Island, Yale Club of New York City, and a
former Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Club of Sewickley.
Mr. Craig is survived by his wife, Dorothy Meyer Craig of Midland; a daughter, Sandra Craig Bessières
and her husband Paul of San Francisco, CA, and their children Christianne Bessières Lane and her
husband John of Mercerville, N.J., Marshall Bessières of Palo Alto, CA, and Stuart Bessières and his

RICHARD R. PIVIROTTO
76, long-time resident of Greenwich, CT found eternal rest on January 8, 2007 surrounded by his family at
Greenwich Hospital. Dick Pivirotto will be remembered for his dedicated service to educational and community
organizations, his deep faith and stewardship of the church, and most importantly, his love and support for his
family and friends.
Dick's love of his life and spouse of 53 years is Mary Burchfield Pivirotto. He is Dad to six children and their
spouses: Robert and Mary Pivirotto Murley, Richard and Jennifer McClellan Pivirotto, John and Susie Pivirotto
Kern, Nancy Pivirotto Barbe, David and Brenda Brophy Pivirotto, and Steve and Jennifer Pivirotto Altieri;
brother to Arthur M. Pivirotto, Jr., Ruth V. Pivirotto and Justine Pivirotto Flanagan; and "Boppy" to his 14
grandchildren.
Dick was born in Youngstown, OH to Arthur Michael and Ruth Erhardt Pivirotto. He grew up in Pittsburgh,
PA, attended Shady Side Academy and graduated from Princeton University in 1952. He played for the
undefeated 1950 and 1951 nationally ranked Princeton football teams. Upon graduation, Dick turned down an
offer to play professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers to attend the Harvard Business School. Following
graduation, he served in the United States Army.
Dick's long and distinguished career in the retail industry began at The Joseph Horne Company of Pittsburgh
where he was President from 1961 to 1970. Following the acquisition of Horne's, he held positions as Vice
Chairman, President and Chairman and CEO of Associated Dry Goods from 1970 to 1981.
Dick was a director of New York Life Insurance, CBS Corporation, Infinity Broadcasting Corporation, General
American Investors Co, Inc., The Gillette Company, Immunomedics, Inc., Greenwich Bank and Trust Company,
Chemical Banking Corporation and Chemical Bank, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Jerrico, Inc., Bowery
Savings Bank, and Turner Equity Investors, Inc.
He was a charter trustee of Princeton University, a trustee of the Princeton University Investment Company and
was actively involved with his beloved Class of 1952 and numerous university committees. He was chairman of
the board of St. Edmund's Academy and a trustee of Shady Side Academy and the Brunswick School.
Dick served over 31 years as a Trustee of Greenwich Hospital including two terms as its Chairman. An active
member of Christ Church of Greenwich, Dick served on the vestry and was junior and then senior warden of the
church. He was a Trustee of the General Theological Seminary, the oldest Seminary of the Episcopal Church that
was founded in 1817 and has been a New York City landmark since 1826.
The Pivirotto family will hold a memorial service at Christ Church of Greenwich, 216 East Putnam Avenue, at
1:00PM on Friday January 9, 2007. There will be a gathering prior to the service in the Parish Hall at 11:00AM.

Craig Ihrig
IHRIG, Craig - On October 1, 2007, Craig, devoted mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at home
among her family. She was 82 years old. As a young girl, Craig loved music, art and poetry. She attended
Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena, where she had the opportunity to sing under renowned conductor
Howard Swann. After graduating, she became a featured soloist on radio station KWKW Pasadena, singing
popular arias and art songs. Craig was a mother of three girls. Throughout their family life, she and her daughters
enjoyed being involved in a variety of performing groups as well as community musical theater. In daily life, she
couldn't help but convey her love of all things beautiful through her passion for her garden as well as her
interest in antiques and interior design. Her lovely home was always rich in color, warmth, and life, with
interesting things to delight her grandchildren in every nook and cranny. Our mom will be greatly missed by all
who loved her, but she leaves a legacy of beauty and appreciation for the arts for her children and grandchildren
to carry on. She is survived by her daughters Tracy Leighton and husband Lloyd of Yuba City, Allison
Zuehlsdorff and husband Scott of Laguna Niguel, and Dana Falls and husband Mark of Santa Rosa. She dearly
loved her eight grandchildren Peter and Liz, Lacey and Cozi, Travis, Carson, Maya and Brock. Friends are invited
to attend a Memorial Service on Sunday October 7th at 1:30 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma

Pg. 9, 3rd paragraph, 3rd line – William Armitage Staunton was an Episcopal minister,
not a Presbyterian minister.
Pg. 10, 1st paragraph – Mary Evans had definitely been William Staunton’s
housekeeper. Rev. William Armitage Staunton, D.D. states this directly in his
“Genealogical & Historical Notices”. Edwin Staunton’s version of this [pg. 93] differs
from the copy of William’s version that I have in the Staunton Family Archives, in
William’s own handwriting. There are about 26 lines that are “missing” in Edwin’s
version, where her being the housekeeper is stated. Interestingly, you also quote
Edwin on pg. 217, in paragraph 5, with part of the information contained in the
“missing” 26 lines.
Pg. 24, note 21, last paragraph – there is no known connection between Thomas, the
son of William and Mary Staunton, and “Joseph Staunton” in the 1840 census
records. [This also appears on pg. 217, paragraphs 3-5, notes for Thomas]
Pg. 25, note 22 – Have you located the actual records for the voyage of “The
Lancaster” in September 1818, from Liverpool bound for Philadelphia? The surname
may also have been spelled “Stanton” at that time.

Pg. 216 & 221, #1 – William Stanton/Staunton was born on January 11, 1775,
according to Edwin Craig, pg. 15, 44 and 71.
Pg. 216, 3rd paragraph – I am presently researching where William Stanton was born.
It is more probable that the reference to “Nottingham” denotes the origin of this
family line, rather than the actual place where William was born.
Pg. 216, 3rd paragraph – Edwin Staunton [pg. 43] gives 2 possibilities for William
Stanton’s wife’s maiden name: Anne Parry or Anne Shone. Edwin [pg 71] again gives
the 2 possibilities, but lines through “Parry”, as though to indicate that he had settled
on “Shone” as her name. You have spelled the surnames “Perry” and “Strone”.
Pg. 216, 221 & 237 - all the children were named “Stanton” until William, father and
son, changed their surname to “Staunton” after Mary Armitage’s death.
Pg. 216, 221 & 237 – George Stanton’s death date is given in William A. Staunton’s
“Genealogical & Historical Notices” as “14 October 1808” [see pg. 241 of your book].
Pg. 217, 221, 223 & 237 [and pg. 9] – Henry died 9/1823, so he had no wife or child.
Pg. 217, 221, 222 and 237 – only Thomas was born in England. Anne Eliza, Mary
Jane, and Henry were born in Pennsylvania, after William and Mary had emigrated in
1818.

Pg. 226 – John Armitage Staunton died on 7/22/1925. Florence Capen was born
3/1/1844, died 2/9/1891. They married on 5/15/1863. They had 3 children: John
Armitage Staunton, Jr. [b. 4/14/1864, d. 5/24/1944]; Florence Isabel Staunton [b.
9/20/1869, d. 10/16/1943]; Henry Capen Staunton [b.12/10/1877, d. 10/15/1957]
[Henry is my grandfather]
Pg. 226 – Mary Frances Staunton was born on 7/7/1844, died on 11/28/1932.
Thomas B. Peck was b. 12/28/1832, died 5/15/1912. They married on 4/15/1863. They
had 4 children: Staunton B. Peck [b. 10/20/1864, d. 7/15/1950]; Mary Frances Peck
[b. 5/3/1866, d. 8/31/1889]; Thomas B. Peck II [b. 2/22/1876, d. 4/4/1958]; William
Armitage Peck [b. 5/3/1878, d. 5/4/1879].
